Dell :: M1530 6th Or 7th Death
Nov 21, 2008
I've had the motherboard in my M1530 replaced 5 or 6 times now, and I just got it back from service where they told me it would get an "updated" or "new version" of motherboard that would not have these issues. My laptop has died on me without me changing out the heat paste, and its died when I did change out the heat paste. It's died overclocked, underclocked and at stock speed. It's been a video card issue every time. Frankly I am completely fed up and very frustrated with dell support and the level of quality of this product.
I really don't want to deal with this anymore, my laptop has been out of commission for a total of maybe a month's worth of days. I didn't pay 2000 dollars for something that breaks every other week. I'm glad they've been good about fixing it, but this is just too far. Does anyone have any idea on what I might say to dell if i wanted my money back or if I wanted to gat a different model of laptop from them as a replacement, because honestly this has cost me far too much time and effort to be worth it in any way.

So I got my Dell XPS M1210 way back at the start of 2007. It served me faithfully up until last week when it died. Basically when I turn it on I can hear the hard drive spinning up and the power light comes on but nothing else, not even the hard drive access light. I'm pretty certain either the motherboard or CPU(or both) are fried. I can see that the CPU fan is not spinning when I turn the laptop on. I disassembled the laptop and gave it a good cleaning, something I probably should of done long ago. The exhaust hole for the CPU fan was nearly totally clogged with dust which is the reason why I think something is fried (Also the temps had been a lot higher than normal the last few weeks). Anyway some questions you guys might be able to help with:
- Should I bother replacing the motherboard or would it just make more sense financially to get a new netbook of some sort?
- Any other suggestions on what I can try to fix the problem?
- Is there anything of practical use I can salvage from my m1210 besides the hard drive?

took my 1730 apart to blow out the dust and quiet a noisy vid card fan. Upon re-assembly, I used a long screw instead of a short when securing the monitor back to the body of the laptop.
That screw pierced a resistor and killed my video card... POOR design Dell + idiot move me= dead 1730. The short of it is, I need someone who has had their 1730 apart to tell me the value of the resistor R12, which is under the rubber flap below the left lid support screw.
(UPDATE) I purchased a new card..I know, I know, but I had to as I had projects that I needed access too. I would still like to fix this card though.
The R12 resistor is a micro resistor with "2A2" printed on top of it.. Anyone have any idea where I can get one of these? I thought at first it was 202 but under the magnifying glass I am pretty sure its "2A2".

I'm running a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS in my E1705 and I've been having some problems with the nasty BSOD.
This is the error message I get:
*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted
It only seems to happen when I'm playing WoW... and its getting really annoying. I had thought it was an overheating problem before, but I've been able to keep my GPU temp under control pretty well lately.

Yesterday while I was on my XPS 1530 laptop, the colors on the screen turned all screwy and then it crashed to blue screen. Odd...
It happened about 5 more times until when I tried to turn on my computer, the backlight on the screen would go on, but the screen itself would remain black.
I can actually hear it booting up normally, it even makes the window log-in noise, but there is simply no image on the screen at all. I even hooked up my external monitor to my laptop, but absolutely nothing comes up on it.

I've been getting the occasional BSOD on my 1705 with the 7900 GS. Is there any fix for this? I saw the one for the 7950 GTX but I don't know if that works the same as the 7900 GS.

This problem suddenly appeared after a crash on my Laptop (after playing Bf2142)
I restarted laptop (M1710) and when Windows XP is loading there are green vertical lines on the screen. Even more worringly the screen after the windows logo (login screen) is completely white but with some black sortof distortion.
This looks to me like my graphics card is going **** up? (7900GTX Go)
I get the same problem if i switch to integrated graphics (from setup).....

I've had my 7900 overclocked since the gtx/gsx bios thing came out a year or so ago. The other day the laptop's screen was frozen and it was locked up. Rebooted and had vertical green lines on the screen during bootup and black screen at startup.. had to reboot into safemode where things worked.. uninstalled the driver and it rebooted back into vista just fine. Installed a new driver and things seemed fine.. green lines were gone and windows worked.. the next day I rebooted and green lines are back... and things not working again.
I would like to reset the bios back to the original 7900gs at the stock speeds and voltage.. but I can't find the original bios.. and when I try to load any other 7900gs bios's I get a "bios mismatch" error.. with nvflash.

Several times I have had my M2010 screen freeze and then not come up at all on a reboot. The machine is under warranty and typically they send a tech out with a motherboard which does not fix the problem. Then the tech who pretty much knows its the video card has them send a new video card which does fix the problem and the machine works beautifully again.
However, several months later the card blows again and I have to do the whole process again which knocks out my computer usually when I need it most. Now I keep all my data externally with exceptions of it breaking down (not how I expected it to work).

I have a brand new Dell XPS with Model : L501X purchased in Malaysia hand carried to Philippines about 2 weeks ago.
Upon receiving I have noticed that a Blue Screen appears with nvlddmkm.sys error every time I play a video initially stored in the laptop hard drive or via youtube.
I have also noticed there were two video drivers installed which where Intel HD graphics and Geforce GT 420M drivers. I installed an updated GT 420M driver through driver downloads in dell support. Unfortunately it did not resolve the issue.
To relieve my doubts of driver conflicts, I have freshly installed a Windows 7 home premium but BSOD still keeps on occurring.
I am currently running this computer using only one video driver (Intel HD Graphics), I want to run this computer using Nvidia Geforce GT 420M.
How am I gonna do that without having BSOD recurring?
Is it also normal to hear some frequently very mild ticking sound coming from the right side of the keyboard and mildly grounding sting on the plastic aluminum colored frame around the keyboard?
BTW, here are some hardware info :
Model : L501X
Processor : Core i5
Ram : 4 Gb
Hdd : 500 Gb
VCard : Nvidia Geforce GT 420M - 1 Gb

I've got a problem. I downloaded and installed the new demo for Time Shift. After it was complete it said it detected I did not have the latest drivers for my video card and I needed to download the latest ones for stable running of the game. So I clicked ok and it took me to a download of a Forceware driver (I've forgotten the numbers and have deleted it). After downloading it and running it, a box popped up and said I don't have the the compatible hardware/software to install those drivers (not exact words). So I thought ok, it will just exit and keep what I've got (dells stock 7900GTX driver). but after exiting the setup about 5 seconds later I got a blue screen stating a hardware error.
So I restarted my M1710 to notice blue dashed vertical lines on my screen and after the Windows XP loading page it would blue screen again so fast I cant read any of it. Now I can run in safe mode without the graphical screw ups on my screen. But the boot diagnostic detected no error. It displayed all those colored bars but there were weird glitches in them. I downloaded and re-installed Dells stock drivers to no avail. I searched my hardrive and registry for anything that said Forceware or the driver number and deleted all results. I system restored to no avail. So now I can only run in safe mode on a really ugly resolution.
What can I do before I resort to the 5+ day pain of return to depot service?....
Device manager shows no problems but says it can state the status of the card in safe mode. And I'm not technical enough to know how to use the event viewer to work out what went wrong.

So lately my SXPS 1640 has been crashing every so often, with a blue screen coming up saying:
POWER_DRIVER_STATE_FAILURE
(or something along those lines)
saying that the computer is restarting to protect the device. I haven't been able to read all of what it says because it restarts to quickly but it's getting really annoying as it is happening more frequently.
It also generally only seems to happen when I've been using it with the battery only and not when it's plugged into the socket.

I have been getting the dreaded blue screen every couple of days for the last few months but since last week I keep getting it every 15 minutes ! My lapotp is 4 years old so I guess I cannot drag it anymore and have to think about a replacement hard drive or a new laptop.
So which one is the best option. I dont want to shell out the extra dough on the new one so was wondering if its worth buying a new HD and upgrading the RAM and keep working on the old one. I just use it for internet, word processing and Photoshop.
My specs are
Pentium M 2.13 GHz
80 GB Ultra ATA HD
256 MB RAM

I've had my Inspiron 1420 for about a year and a half now, with virtually no problems except when dealing with Windows Vista. But, about a month ago, I was playing a very graphics intensive game and all of a sudden my screen froze, colors inverted, and it started to flash and pixelate at me. I turned my computer off, then back on, and this started happening:
I turned my computer off again and blew out all the dust I could, then let it cool down. When I started back up everything was fine again. But about a week later, it did the same thing, but for longer.
About an hour later it was fine again. A couple weeks went by and nothing like that happened again, up until about three days ago. I was playing my game again and then it started to pixelate, but I could still play. The screen would scramble, but it was almost like it would refresh every 10 seconds or so and the screen would be fine. That night, I was (again) playing my game and my screen scrambled, froze, and went to your basic blue screen.
I rebooted and everything was fine, but the next day I turned on my computer and it did the segemented screen again and when I tried to fix it, another blue screen came up saying "Hardware Malfunction, call you hardware vendor for support .....

my laptop has just died. I purchased the product just under 1 year ago and it came with a 1 year warranty.
I have an ACER 4920g 2Ghz (T7300), 2Gb RAM, 256Mb Graphics, Vista Home Premium.
Fortunately I store very little on the laptop so this is not a data retrieval exercise!
I was sat surfing the net tonight, and pop!, the whole unit went dead. I was running it from the mains at the time and there were no performance symptoms that suggested it might be on its way out.
The battery pack has a green light on it which flashes when it is connected to the laptop now, but is solid when I unplug it from the laptop. the light used to be solid all the time. Is this flashing an error code?
When the power pack is plugged into the laptop, the blue power light on the laptop does not light up. pressing the power button does nothing, the fans do not kick into action, absolutely nothing.
The laptop has no signs of life whatsoever - at the time it went pop, it just powered down within 1 second, like a power failure. it did have a charge in it.
The fact that it had charge in it and it was connected to the mains is making me think there has been some kind of internal failure - a processor failing? or motherbaord failing? or the connection between the motherboard and the power button?

I have tried to install XP Home on my Acer 6920g but with no success.
I made an XP disk with the sata drivers via Nlite which was recognised, installed the OS but on first boot the laptop gives me the BSOD but as it is so quick I am unable to get any error code. The laptop will not boot on safe mode either which makes me think there is a physical (hardware) issue that doesn't like XP.

My new HP DV3 1075 is only 2 weeks old:
Windows Vista Home Premium w/SP1(64bit)
13.3" WXGA LED Brightview Widescreen Display(1280x800)
AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core ZM-84(2.3Ghz)
4GB DDR2(2 dimm)
500GB 5400RPM Sata hard Drive
ATI Radeon 3200 Graphics w/64MB Display Cache Memory
It's been working fine and updating automatically periodically - until last night's Java 6 #13 followed by the windows update (on 5/13). Got the blue screen and oxo code (a general stop error ending in A which gave no clues) and subsequent hp repair files option. This worked the first time, then java updated again and I restarted it. But after the windows update it happened another half dozen times and the hp notebook could never repair itself.

I have a relatively new Aspire E1-522. Was in the middle of watching Netflix when it conked out. Now, when I turn the power on very little happens...the blue light comes on, the fan comes on and the screen backlight comes on...and then goes out...and then comes on again...etc.
Basically, turning it on doesn't even get to the Acer logo. Cannot get into the BIOS by any means. In my research this sounds exactly like the Aspire One black screen of death, although I haven't found references to it with respect to the E1.
I think the BIOS is fried. How to re-flash it on the E1-522? I cannot boot windows, so I can't use the self-extracting EXE. I need to be able to flash it from the bare bones hardware like the fix for the AA1 ....

i have had a dell inspiron laptop m5030 for over a couple years now with no problems. I have never had any major problems with this computer ever. always loved my dell. now i go to turn it on. and suddenly instead of the cute dell screen i got a black screen of death and the 7 beeps of death that woke my service dog up. now this would not be such a issue if this computer was not my actual disabled livelihood. it is no longer under warranty and of course after searching the internet it appears that dell knows of this issue with it. but it still does not see fit to recall them or replace them. of course they will charge you to turn it in and fix it temporary.

my Aspire 6920G.
So far got many issues with it like: a year-old battery death, CPU overheat during games, and driver issues with windows seven.
I am considering of buying a new laptop, the 5940G, which has these specs -
Display 15.6" (1366 x 768) / Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6 GHz) / RAM 4 GB / HDD 500 GB / ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 / Blu-ray / Wi-Fi / Buletooth / web-camera / Windows 7 Home Premium / 3 kg. $1939,00 (normal price as for Ukraine)
You can read a detailed review with pics over here [url]
What makes me think about this lap, is the Acer brand. So far i can say, that the batteries acer makes are crap, because the 6920G isn't the first laptop i experience problems with (especially the battery problem)

Well, since yesterday, my 2 month old unibody mackbook has been crashing at random. I'll be doing anything from web surfing, to just doing a time-machine back up and "whosh", the screen goes black with a 1/2" wide multicolored pixelated horizontal stripe about 1" from the top remaining.
This has happened about a dozen times, with the only option being to hold down the power button to reboot.
I went into the the nearest Apple Store to a Genius Bar appointment to see if there was anything to be done. Mind you, i also ran every known diagnostic I could get my hands upon, before I went, and everything checks out a-ok.
The Genius bar guy says it's a "known issue" with the new unibody Macs with the 9400M graphics processor. A "known issue"??? How come I have never heard about this on NBR?
I am supposed to wait until Apple issues it's firmware "fix" according the the GB guy.

I have an HP probook 4720s (Product #: WT238EA#ACQ). I have upgraded my RAM to 6GB.My problem. The other day I was busy playing a game when the computer froze and then turned off while it was turning off a small blue screen briefly appeared. I restarted the laptop and everything seemed fine, I left the computer for a few minutes and when I came back the screen was completely off but the computer was operating as normal. No key press or anything would put the screen back on.Everytime after this event that I tried to put the laptop on it would start(HHD spin, CPU fan work, HDD light would blink for a bit then stop but the screen would stay completely black with no blue backlight).
I tried hard reset and a number of other things like checking if the RAM was connected properly and still the screen remained off.I decided to connect the laptop to an external monitor and I finally could display on the monitor but it still would not display on the laptop screen. After the windows emblem loaded the dreaded blue screen of death would appear with a STOP error 0x00000116 which after some looking up appears to be the graphics driver.
After safe starting the system and rolling back the graphics driver to standard VGA adapter the windows 7 system was then able to start in normal mode. I've tried reinstalling the HD 5470 graphics driver but the blue screen of death continues to appear. I have completely reloaded the OS to no avail.I disconnected the laptops screen from the motherboard without the graphics driver loaded, which didn't cause a beep but displayed on the external monitor when I connected it. I tried the same with the graphic driver loaded, still no beeps were heard and when I connected the external monitor the blue screen appeared. From the tests I had tried, I believe that there must be an issue with the graphics card itself as the Blue screen of death only displays when the graphics card driver is loaded.
