Dell :: M6400 Performance Index Under Windows 7
Nov 27, 2009
I am running a RAID0 array on fast hard disks (ok, so they ain't SSDs, but still!)..
it came out at 6.3 which was the lowest score - lower than the FX2700m for gaming - which suprised me given that in Vista the hard disk got max marks and the FX2700m didn't..

I have been getting really poor hard drive performance since I've got my computer. It's getting a 5.9 on the windows experience index which I think is quite low for an 128GB SSD? Also, when copying and pasting large files it seems to stall for a few seconds during the process.
Has anyone else been having this problem or know a solution? What kind WEI ratings are people getting?
My machine is a SXPS 1645, Core i7 720Q, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD.

The M4400 supports dual-channel DDR2-800 memory.
The M6400 supports dual-channel DDR3-1066 memory.
Both systems have a FSB that operates at 1066 MHz.
I'm trying to understand if the different memory technologies ultimately make a difference for computational (i.e. math on large data sets) performance in these particular machines.
Consider an M4400 and M6400 with identical CPUs and amounts of DDR-2 and DDR-3 memory, respectively. And suppose that all relevant memory latencies are identical. For the sake of this question, I don't care about power consumption and heat (which is obviously a benefit of DDR3).
Question:
Since both machines support dual-channel memory operation, the maximum effective bandwidth of the memory bus is doubled. So the dual-channel DDR2-800 can achieve 12.8 GB/sec transfer rate, while the dual-channel DDR3-1066 can achieve 17 GB/sec transfer rate. In either case, these rates are higher than the 8.5 GB/sec rate that the FSB can achieve, so it seems that performance in both machines is limited by the speed of the FSB (1066 MHz). Is that correct?
For more info on matched FSB and memory ratings under Core 2, see:

Can I get folks who have the Studio 15 w/ATI post their WEI numbers? I'm concerned the Studio 15z from Best Buy is actually beating the 1558 and that disappoints me.
Processor - 6.7
RAM - 5.9
Graphics - 4.9
Gaming - 6.2
Hard disk - 5.9

I just was wondering what some of you are getting in Windows 7 Index Rating.
I was having issues getting VS 2008 to work without going crazy with SearchIndexer.exe and re-installed 7 just now. Somehow my score is now a 4.1, using the same drivers ....

I was curious as to what sort of scores Windows 7 is giving to different specs of FWs.
Heres mine:
Processor: P8700 ------>6.1
Memory: 4 GB --------->6.1
Graphics:ATI HD4650--->5.9
Gaming Graphics-------->6.6
Primary Hard Disk(7200rpm 320 gb)--->5.8 (base)
I have a 490CTO with win7 home premium. I can't remember but I think that I had exactly the same score with vista, only nothing went over 5.9. The HDD score was the same. Did anybody else get a different base score after upgrading to 7?

if anyone is willing to share their WEI result in Win7 with Vaio Z in Speed mode. Would be curious, if it'll show some differences with different CPUs, HDDs, ... You can show the additional specifics by clicking on "View and print detailed performance and system information". (Thanks NHT about the info, didn't know about that ) As the chart doesn't show, what kind of HDD you got,

I just noticed that my window drag with content ability has disappeared. I go to personilize -> window color and app -> classic appearence -> effects and click show window content while draging... all is good until the restart.
Does vista think that my comp doesn't have enough power to run aero at fullest? I have 4 gigs of ram, and 130M video card, what else does it want?

I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my e6400 with p9500, 256mb graphics, 4gb ram and 256gb SSD. First, 7 BLOWS Vista to shreds regarding speed. It is unreal how clean and efficient it is. My first question is in the power settings, high performance is gone. Anyone know why? Also, the Windows Performance Rating shows the following:
Processor: 6.1
RAM: 6.1
Graphics: 3.4
Gaming Graphics: 5.3
Primary HD: 6.9
The scoring goes up to 7.9. Do you guys think those are low? I'm surprised gaming graphics are higher than Aero graphics and that the hard disk is only a 6.9 and the processor is only 6.1.

How long does it normally take Spotlight to index your HDD? I clean installed SL about a week ago, copied over all my apps and files with Migration Assistant, and then used Boot Camp to install 7. Yesterday, Spotlight randomly started indexing, and I left it on over night but it is still indexing. It seems like it's taking an unusually long amount of time.

I have a Dell M6400 running Windows 7 64-bit.
I also have an external My Book 500 GB with triple connectivity (Firewire, USB and eSATA).
When I connect this external HD with the eSATA cable on my M6400 while running XP 32-bit it works perfectly.
Attempting to do the same thing while running windows 7 64-bit will typically result in file transfer hanging somewhere in the middle (this also hang windows explorer). I then have to disconnect the eSATA cable to resume windows operation.
The USB mode works fine, but the Firewire seem to have to same issue than the eSATA.
I am wondering if anybody else is having similar issue and / or anybody has any idea(s) as to how to fix this.
I can use the USB, but I frequently have to transfer virtual machine back and forth so I could definitively benefit from the eSATA improve transfer rate.
I run the HD Controller in AHCI mode

Ran win7 on my M6300 for quite a while with no problems... M6400 just showed up and I can't seem to work it out. seemingly random BSODs that hit at any time. Analysis shows that the first one was caused by csrss.exe, most after that were caused by ntkrnlmp.exe,
Has anybody else had this happen and figured out which driver is causing the problem? Maybe I should ask "has anybody else installed win7 build 7100 64-bit on a M6400 and *not* had problems like this? If so, what drivers did you install beyond what windows update does for you?"
System config is:
Q9300 quad-core proc
4gb RAM on 2 DIMMs
3700M video
RGB-LED screen (if that matters)
64GB samsung SSD, 500gb WD 5400RPM HD (aftermarket) as secondary drive
verizon rev-a evdo mini-pci card
intel 5300 a/b/g card
fingerprint scanner
i think that's all the important parts...
the first bsod happened before i had installed just about anything at all, other than windows updates. i've been throwing just about every other driver i can find at it to see if i can narrow it down (with the intent of reinstalling from scratch once i figure it out). every time I think I have it figured out, I'll look over at it and notice that it is BSOD'ed or post-bsod rebooting.

Why not share how 7 run on our precisions m6400 ?
I'm using win 7 build 7048 x64 working really well (way better and faster than XP sp3, however I never thought to use Vista..).
there was some issues with build 7000 and Adobe CS4 production apps (like premiere, encore, AE) now solved with 7048
The only nvidia driver I found working well are 179.44 for Win vista x64, installed without modding nv_disp.inf
the one provided from windows update for 7 (179.43 win7 i think) was not working (the screen turn white).....

Yup me again, in my hunt to determine if M6400 is right for me as it costs just about as much as a used car, I want to make sure its a good investment before I buy it.
What is the main difference with the M6400 and the M6400 Covet?
I configured both with the same specs and the Covet is about $900 more in price?
Does orange paint really cost that much?

I bought yesterday the 640GB WD HDD and I tried to install it but Windows will not load. It will get stuk in the "loading screen" and will not advance to ask my password.
To complicate things, Windows actually loaded once, the driver setup programm was launched, the HDD was not visible and when I tried to restart it got stuck again.
Once I removed the drive everything loaded as usually.

I recently upgraded my wife's laptop from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate and almost everything works fine on it. The one sticking point through has been the battery behaving oddly in Win7. The first thing is that the battery icon has a red X on it and when you hover over it it states that I should consider replacing my battery. When the laptop runs unplugged, it literally lasts 20 minutes before it powers itself off. This is a huge difference when it would last over 2 hours in Vista just before the upgrade.
I'm wondering if there are specific drivers I should install or downgrade even though everything in Device Manager no longer has any yellow exclamation marks (I had to install some drivers after installing Win7). FYI, this laptop is about 1.5 years old.
If I can't find a solution to the low battery performance, I may have to revert her laptop back to Vista which would totally negate the reason for buying Win7 in the first place for her machine.

M6400, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit RTM, FX3700M, E2E RGB LED
Everything appears to be working fine in my win 7 installation with the exception of the video. If I install any video driver then the LCD display dim's down to <50% of its normal brightness compared to just vanilla VGA drivers. External monitor works fine.
I initially went with the official NVIDIA 186.03 driver, and this exhibited the dimming effect. I have since tried all manner of other video driver versions including laptop2go, etc and none of them work. Even had my first win7 BSOD when I installed Dell's latest Vista x64 driver .....

I met a friend and he's from Taiwan. I asked him what does he thinks about Dell notebook. He said that overall, Taiwanese prefer to use HP-compaq notebooks instead of dell because the latter frequently "crashes".
I told him about the advantages of DELL to no avail... He was quite hard headed. I have experiences of crashes somewhere in between of usage of my DELL notebook.

I'm looking to purchase an Studio XPS 16 soon. I have never considered buying this laptop given the high pricetag, even though I really like it. But that changed yesterday as I received a 70% OFF coupon.
So here am I, wondering which config I should select. For instance, 500GB @ 7200rpm or 320GB @ 7200rpm or 128GB SSD? Intel 5300 Wireless-N or 5100?
Performance is important but I also want to select components or a configuration that has fewest known problems (bug, incompability or being unreliable).

I got my new XPS 13 a few days ago - P8800, 4GB, G210M, 500GB 7200rpm, Dell 1520 Wifi, LG LED display - and love the build quality and performance. I also removed the stock thermal paste and applied Arctic Cooling MX-3 using this guide.
Did a fresh install of Windows 7 with Flash 10.1 Beta2 and nVidia 195.81 (beta). Both of these allow for hardware accelaration in Flash.
CPU usage during playback of a Youtube 1080p video was amazingly low -
With the 9400M G active (Balanced Power Plan), playing this video took around 20% CPU
With the G210M active (High Performance Power Plan), CPU usage was 0-5%!!
Installed Media Player HPC 1.3.1249 and chose EVR Custom Pres for video rendering (View..Options...Playback.Output).
Here's how much load the GPU takes off the CPU during the playback of a 720p video
Video Rendering___________CPU Utilization
System Default__________________50%
EVR Custom Pres with 9400M_______28%
EVR Custom Pres with G210M______ 21%
I also installed Badaboom and tried encoding 1080i video from an HD camcorder into an iphone version and amazingly the CPU was hardly being taxed -
3DMark 2006 result was also very impressive -
Also ran DPC latency checker to find potential issues and everything looked good -

I have an E6400 that I bought at the end of 2008 (IIRC in October, I think they were maybe on the market for a couple of weeks tops when I got it), and have recently been having performance issues.
Even old games & games that should work really well on it (warcraft 3, call of cthulhu, tf2 at lowest settings + 640x480) sometimes start out ok but quickly grind to a halt (slide show kind of speed).
I tried reinstalling windows (both xp and vista) & also tried running warcraft 3 via wine on linux - nothing helps much, sooner or later there is significant slow down.
I would have thought it might be the intel graphics, but then again that card is not *that* weak (warcraft 3 came out at 2003 and I have managed to run it with a 450Mhz pentium 2 + voodoo 2!), and it does start out plenty fast (sometimes).
