Dell :: Windows Experience Index Poor SSD Performance
Feb 23, 2010
I have been getting really poor hard drive performance since I've got my computer. It's getting a 5.9 on the windows experience index which I think is quite low for an 128GB SSD? Also, when copying and pasting large files it seems to stall for a few seconds during the process.
Has anyone else been having this problem or know a solution? What kind WEI ratings are people getting?
My machine is a SXPS 1645, Core i7 720Q, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD.
Can I get folks who have the Studio 15 w/ATI post their WEI numbers? I'm concerned the Studio 15z from Best Buy is actually beating the 1558 and that disappoints me.
Processor - 6.7 RAM - 5.9 Graphics - 4.9 Gaming - 6.2 Hard disk - 5.9
I have a 490CTO with win7 home premium. I can't remember but I think that I had exactly the same score with vista, only nothing went over 5.9. The HDD score was the same. Did anybody else get a different base score after upgrading to 7?
if anyone is willing to share their WEI result in Win7 with Vaio Z in Speed mode. Would be curious, if it'll show some differences with different CPUs, HDDs, ... You can show the additional specifics by clicking on "View and print detailed performance and system information". (Thanks NHT about the info, didn't know about that ) As the chart doesn't show, what kind of HDD you got,
I am running a RAID0 array on fast hard disks (ok, so they ain't SSDs, but still!)..
it came out at 6.3 which was the lowest score - lower than the FX2700m for gaming - which suprised me given that in Vista the hard disk got max marks and the FX2700m didn't..
I just need to verify my sanity by asking you how your Studio XPS 1640 with a t9800@2.93GHz and the 4670 ATI graphics card performs in general. I was playing Left4Dead and now I have the Left4Dead2 demo installed, and it just seems a little glitchy with both of them. I am running it at 1080p and graphics mostly on high, aside from shading and AA is off I believe, but it is still glitchy. The way the game recommends it to be run with my computer's specs is maxed out, however, its far too jerky and slow. Is there something stupid I may be doing wrong? Also, a friend with the studio 15 and a smaller cpu and the lower gpu seems to run it better, albeit on lower settings, but it just seems smoother.
I have the m1530 and recently got team fortress 2. Have updated BIOS A012, somewhat updated graphics driver 185.85, can't seem to download the 186.06, links are down for Windows XP Pro 32 Bit version. I am running the game at 800*600 and it still lags.
My screen becomes extremely choppy when more than 3 players are on screen at the same time. From what I've gather on other threads,
Anyway, he has yet to install anything beyond what came with the laptop and he commented that a antivirus scan took 8+ hours to run.
That seemed incredible to me so I went over and we ran a few benchmarks and the results were frighteningly bad.
Using HDTune, the normal curve one sees of a declining arch is rife with drastic spikes all the way through with minimum of 2.2 MB/sec (seems VERY low), and a maximum of 65 MB/sec (normalish).
Additionally, the CPU usage was 11.9 percent, which seems unusually high.
I've just taken my new precision m4400 out of the box and I've already found 2 majour things wrong with it. I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
FIRST: I'm getting very poor graphics performance. Both observed bad windows refresh times and low OpenGL benchmarks using cinebench 10. I've already run windows update and installed the latest nvidia driver.
Initially I was getting an opengl score of ~1500 on cinebench, now i'm getting ~3500 but it is still too low. It should be over 6000 ....
Well, my Nvidia 8400 died for second time and I called Dell to replace it. After asking for a sustainable solution and to ensure me that I won't have the same issue once more, they said that they will install me a new motherboard revision which reduces the possibilities of having my GPU dead.
Thus, they replaced the motherboard. I didn't format my system but kept my Windows Vista Ultimate x64 installation.
After using the system for a couple of hours I realized that the system was under-performing. Then I checked with CPU z utility and found out that the CPU clock was stuck @1,6GHz (although my power scheme was high performance). My processor is the T7500. The system was overheated and the clock speed was reduced (I guess). The thing was that I could almost do nothing, not even surf on the internet. This makes my laptop unable to deal with applications that need lots of CPU power.
Does anybody else face the same problem? Is there something I could do to return to the old situation? Should I contact Dell and complain? It is a huge problem cause half of my applications cannot be used any more!! After a few minutes of use the laptop stops performing normally!
Could it be that if I format my HD and make a fresh install the problem will be resolved? (I repeat that I didn't format my system after the MB replacement).
I'm a little sick of sub-par Flash performance on mac. I'm aware of the Adobe-Apple catfight.
Using a mid-2009 15" with a C2D at 2.53 GHz alongside Nvidia's 9400 M, Firefox 3.6.3 on OS X 10.6.3. Flash version is 10.0.45.2 -- the most recent release version. Have tried the 10.1 beta (and newer RC) with little change.
Streaming YouTube vids staggers every minute or two for a few seconds. This is not an issue I've had much, if any, of on a Windows box.
I've tried the about:config suggestion where you extend the time in which Firefox saves its state in case of a crash; still seeing the stuttering. Is this just a Firefox issue? Firefox + Mac issue?
I'd migrate to Chrome / Safari, but both browsers seem to render fonts smaller than Firefox does; Safari has a minimum font limit, but it seems like that's not always respected (or 9-point fonts are much smaller than I'd imagine).
Over the last few months the graphics seem to have deteriorated dramatically, particularly when using the 'speed' mode. The laptop will not play any high definition videos (even with a resolution of just 720p as well!) remotely smoothly, videos which play without a hitch on my 7 year old Pentium 4 with 1gb of ram and 256mb graphics! In fact, graphics and the whole PC itself seem to run much more smoothly when using the 'stamina' setting. This really makes no sense in my mind. It's quite irritating and disappointing since I wanted to be able to attach this laptop to the 42inch plasmascreen with the HDMI cable and watch films!
I upgraded to a new driver to see if it would help (using one of the driver packs made by nautis/dox in the 'discoveries on Vaio Z hybrid graphics' thread) but it has not helped at all, just made the 'stamina' setting even slower!
Will I get around a complete re-instal to factory settings?
I just was wondering what some of you are getting in Windows 7 Index Rating.
I was having issues getting VS 2008 to work without going crazy with SearchIndexer.exe and re-installed 7 just now. Somehow my score is now a 4.1, using the same drivers ....
I just noticed that my window drag with content ability has disappeared. I go to personilize -> window color and app -> classic appearence -> effects and click show window content while draging... all is good until the restart.
Does vista think that my comp doesn't have enough power to run aero at fullest? I have 4 gigs of ram, and 130M video card, what else does it want?
just got windows 7 BETA 32x today and i have to say:
IT IS SIMPLY AWSOME!!!!
the new looks, the really snappy and smooth interface, the new features, and the fast as hell startup time... WOW!
i was going to add some pictures but my connection is acting up again and i cant seem to upload anything so il just write some outstanding features:
1- the speed, its just so much faster than vista.... as simple as that, and it uses 630 megs of ram when i actually have 4gigs on this comp, while vista used 1.2 gigs, and as i said, the startup time is amazing .....
With my 1730 I can get a 5.1 score. The 5.1 is because of my ram which gets a 5.1, I am upgrading and adding another 2gb so this will not be a bottleneck anymore. My next highest score is a 5.2 for my hd. Is there anyway to get a higher score for my hd? I have a 7200rpm, would adding another hd, and putting them in raid somehow make a difference? I would at least like to figure out how i could make the hd faster, after that my next lowest score is not until 5.4, and if i had a score of 5.4
I decided to upgrade my Vista/Fusion installation to Windows 7/Fusion today on my Alu unibody Mac.
The experience took a couple of hours, and I have to say it was a nervous operation. A few heads up for those making the trek....
The setup program would not run until I uninstalled McAfee completely. Just disabling does not do the trick.
The mouse button stopped working several times at key junctures, when it is asking for input. Pressing the escape key after bringing up the VMware menu bar seems to alleviate the problem.
I could not re-install McAfee after the installation from the VMware menu bar. I'll have to see if I can do it later from the Fusion install disk.
After installation, Windows 7 seems to to function OK, but I did not do any in-depth testing as I'll want to have a working antivirus before I proceed further. If I can't get McAfee back on, maybe I'll install AVG's free AV.
Thought I'd put my experience with the Window 7 Beta on my Acer Aspire 6920G, for those considering it but not sure whether it works etc.
Installation: Installation went smooth, picked up alot of things out of the box, but for the things it doesn't, you can use the backup feature on the vista partition to create a disc with all the drivers etc. on
Drivers: Well there are some you'll have to get yourself, e.g. Graphics Card drivers, I've got the HD3650 flavour of machine and my drivers are found here: [url]
Another driver that didn't work, and the one from the drivers disc doesn't either is the SD Card reader, however you can get the drivers direct from JMicron here: http://www.jmicron.com/Driver.htm go into the ftp ( there's a link towards the end of the text) and get the driver for the JMB38X not 36X, this driver works a charm.
I can't speak for ExpressCard devices as I don't use them myself.
Sound works out of the box.
Even after installing the drivers for it the webcam refuses to work.
With the drivers from the driver disc created in Vista, bluetooth works............
Well my PC came OEM installed with Vista 32 Bit edition and I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition (as i get a student discount).
Looking around the forums and internet in general, I have noticed that on the acer 6920g there seems to always be a problem with drivers such as the CineDash, Realtek, TV tuner, Modem, Card reader, Fingerprint, Webcam, Bluetooth etc.. I have also read that you can fix the launchmanager by running in Vista compatiability mode.
If i do an in-place upgrade (going from vista 32-bit to windows 7 ultimate) will it be fine? Also is there anything I should be cautionous of such as the drivers etc..
I would actually really like to do a clean installation but I'm worried that the keyboard "quick" buttons (such as the internet, bluetooth, mail on the side of keyboard will not work)- can someone please confirm if I did a clean installation, would theese buttons still work?
Also I have two games:GTA IV, Call of Duty 5 , will theese both work on windows 7 (or on compatability).
I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my e6400 with p9500, 256mb graphics, 4gb ram and 256gb SSD. First, 7 BLOWS Vista to shreds regarding speed. It is unreal how clean and efficient it is. My first question is in the power settings, high performance is gone. Anyone know why? Also, the Windows Performance Rating shows the following:
The scoring goes up to 7.9. Do you guys think those are low? I'm surprised gaming graphics are higher than Aero graphics and that the hard disk is only a 6.9 and the processor is only 6.1.
A friend just showed me his new Dell Vostro lappy. He has 4 GB of DDR2 800mhz memory on it when compared to my 4 GB of DDR2 667mhz memory on my XPS 1530
However, under his windows experience score - he gets 5.9 score for memory operations while I just get a 5.1. I can't believe that a couple of hundred mhz can result in such a drastic difference.
Is there something optimized for his system but not for mine?
How long does it normally take Spotlight to index your HDD? I clean installed SL about a week ago, copied over all my apps and files with Migration Assistant, and then used Boot Camp to install 7. Yesterday, Spotlight randomly started indexing, and I left it on over night but it is still indexing. It seems like it's taking an unusually long amount of time.
I executed the performance index and everything was over 7.0 but the Hard Drive was 3.0, I have installed the Intel Chipset and SATA drivers, what else I should do ?, in Vista x64 I got around 6.0 for the disk,
