Can I get folks who have the Studio 15 w/ATI post their WEI numbers? I'm concerned the Studio 15z from Best Buy is actually beating the 1558 and that disappoints me.

I have been getting really poor hard drive performance since I've got my computer. It's getting a 5.9 on the windows experience index which I think is quite low for an 128GB SSD? Also, when copying and pasting large files it seems to stall for a few seconds during the process.
Has anyone else been having this problem or know a solution? What kind WEI ratings are people getting?
My machine is a SXPS 1645, Core i7 720Q, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD.

I have a 490CTO with win7 home premium. I can't remember but I think that I had exactly the same score with vista, only nothing went over 5.9. The HDD score was the same. Did anybody else get a different base score after upgrading to 7?
if anyone is willing to share their WEI result in Win7 with Vaio Z in Speed mode. Would be curious, if it'll show some differences with different CPUs, HDDs, ... I searched pretty thoroughly through the forums when I started my completecare process, but found no info, so I think this might be helpful for other people wondering what the Complete Care System Exchange / Replacement Warranty process is like.
So I've had a number of parts placed on the e1505 I purchased in summer 2006, every single component and plastic at least once except for the screen itself, a wsxga+ 1680x1050 - they literally don't sell these in laptops anymore.
It took a catastrophic spill outside my house on April 21st (i think), I tried to save it, but couldn't - screen had shattered, back left corner had bent up about an inch (heatsink assembly included), right hinge torn apart, but it still booted! I could plug in an external monitor and get somewhat though the boot phase (never bothered to fully boot back into windows after that)
Called in on the 22nd, they next-dayed a box, and i shipped it out on the 23rd.
Depot got in on the 28th according to FedEx, but I hadn't heard from them so I called in on the 29th to find out that the depot had in fact found there was fatal damage, and they were waiting on approval for a System Exchange .....
I have an Acer 6935G. I have updated my bios, and my graphicdrivers. My score at the moment is following:
I have 5.9 in all areas except:

How can I improve this?

My Studio 1558 passes' the post test with the Dell logo and black bar underneath. Windows 7 does not load but the cursor appears in the upper left hand corner of the monitor. I can't log into safe mode or do anything with the computer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently updated my OS to Windows 8 but the Eject key on the keyboard doesn't work. I thought the problem would be solved by installing QuickSet but still the same. All other media keys (change display, wifi, battery, brightness, mute, volume etc) are working perfectly except the eject button.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a factory system restore on my laptop and I am struggling to do it. I have been able to do it in the past...but I don't remember how.
What I am struggling with is I can't find the "Dell factory Image Restore" option. I do F8 > Repair my computer > Choose your keyboard layout > .....
But that is it. I never log in as an "administrator". I never get the chance to even log in. I'm guessing this is why the option "Dell factory Image Restore" never appears.
I have upgraded to Windows 8 on my Dell Studio 1558 recently. After the upgrade, none of my USB drives are working. I have tried to search on the net as well, but no success.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy current OS is Windows 8 Pro, Display driver: AMD 13-4_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe1  If set Backlit brightness to level 2 for example, and after some time display turns off (turn off display after X minute) by itself, or restart the laptop; the Backlit brightness level remains same (level 2) but the actual Luminosity (Intensity of backlit) changes to something else.2  If I decrease the Backlit brightness (Fn + F4) to level 0 (the minimum level), and if I further press the key combination (Fn + F4) to decrease Backlit brightness, it will change the Backlit brightness, but the Backlit brightness should not be changing because it already reaches to the minimum level.This issue doesn't happen in Windows 7 with the same driver. this apart from reverting back to ATI v12.1 ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Studio 1558 laptop, originally with Windows 7 which I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro. Â I have just installed a larger HD (1TB) to replace the 500GB which I thought might have been on its way out as it occasionally started clicking. Â I have also taken the opportunity for a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro. Â But the Device Manager does not show any Bluetooth devices even though the Bluetooth mouse works! Â However I cannot find any links in Devices & Printers to allow me to change the mouse wheel action or the Synaptics touch pad action. Â
Going back to the 500GB HD gives me all this functionality so the hardware is all ok. Â The BIOS settings still have Bluetooth enabled. Â I have updated Windows updates, and used Slimdrivers to update all the drivers.
My laptop is Dell Studio 1558 with Windows 7 as the OS. The issue is that now when i try to turn on the Laptop, its go'n to "Windows Error Recovery" with following options to enter:
"Launch start up repair"Â
andÂ
"Start windows Normally"
I tried both the option at two different times but its not fixing the error or starting windows normally and its stuck at "Starting Windows" screen. Then I tried to use F12 - Boot option- Diagnostics for which I am getting the following errors:
"Error code 0142Msg: Error Code:200-0142Msg: Hard Drive 0 - self test unsuccessfulStatus:79"
Now when i try the same option [F12 - Boot option- Diagnostics]"Error code 0146Msg: Error Code:200-0146Msg: Hard Drive 0 - self test log contains previous error(s)What should I do to resolve this issue?
I would like to know if a USB drive can be made bootable using Windows 7 Re-installation DISC given along with my Dell 1558 Laptop and can be used for clean installation of Windows 7.

it came out at 6.3 which was the lowest score - lower than the FX2700m for gaming - which suprised me given that in Vista the hard disk got max marks and the FX2700m didn't..

I was having issues getting VS 2008 to work without going crazy with SearchIndexer.exe and re-installed 7 just now. Somehow my score is now a 4.1, using the same drivers ....
I just noticed that my window drag with content ability has disappeared. I go to personilize -> window color and app -> classic appearence -> effects and click show window content while draging... all is good until the restart.
Does vista think that my comp doesn't have enough power to run aero at fullest? I have 4 gigs of ram, and 130M video card, what else does it want?
I’ve had my Dell studio 1555 for about 3 days now and I thought I might tell my experience I’ve had with the laptop and Dell as a company.
I was in the market for a new laptop for about 2 weeks nothing suitable had come up, looked at a few Sony’s and HP’s and nothing was in my price range, the ones I wanted were Ł1000+.
I never considered dell after hearing all the horror stories that people have had, however I decided to look at them with an open mind, you know the phrase never judge a book by its cover. Anyway I was considering getting a relatively small laptop that I could carry around university, but at the same time I needed something with a little power to handle all those graphic intensive applications and decided to go for the Studio 1555 (price at Ł800 was great value) , I chose the high end model and because it had a built in blu-ray drive I thought I might as well upgrade the screen to 1080p, I ordered and that was that.
Being the impatient person I am, after the 3rd or 4th business day it was shipped I was wondering why no one had called to arrange a delivery, so I called them and they said “we can deliver it tomorrow morning.” Was really happy, and felt like an excited kid again.
Next day delivery man came and I signed for it with a big smile on my face. I opened up the box to find a shiny laptop inside, anyway I power it on to find some bloat ware that I didn’t want or need, so I thought I would start uninstalling the programs, MacAfee trial uninstalled no problem, same goes for the office trial, however when I tried to uninstall the Data online backup software it kept on giving errors, so I said full install of vista it is then… After the vista reinstall I loaded up all the correct drivers and everything was good to go.
Playing with for a first few hours I thought it’s a fast and snappy laptop and was really happy with the product. One thing I did notice every time I powered on the laptop on the vista welcome screen had horizontal lines running through it; I thought ill address that problem a bit later.
I put a Blu-ray disc of Spiderman 3 to test out the gorgeous screen and that it where all the problems began, first of all it didn’t recognize the disc, I thought it might be a faulty disc so I pressed eject and low and behold nothing came out, I tried pressing eject on my computer and trying it from the bios all to no avail, I know there some people out there that are going to say it’s a easy fix, but I am not going to take apart the laptop after a few hours of use.
That was the final straw basically have just got off the phone with them after being passed around their telephone lines like a piece of meat and being put on hold for the best part of half an hour, lol they first said they will call me back for a cancellation , i was having none of that and i said i needed sorting out today, to give dell credit they put me straight through. The delivery man will pick up the laptop on Monday and I am going to get a full refund within the next week or so….. Sorry I know this is a bit long but I had to get this of my chest, it’s such a shame because I really did like the laptop. It’s just a case of starting the whole process of buying a new laptop. Im thinking the studio xps but dell has really put me off...
this my first and probably last post. I just want to make you aware of my 3-4 months drama with this system and Dell "Phillipindia".
Here it goes... around 4 months ago I decided to replace my 3 year old Inspiron. I look at what dell has to offer and was immediately attracted by the look and specifications of their studio XPS 16.
So I choose one, max it up almost to the top, slide $2k and waited In about 20 days the system arrived... new, nice and shiny... first impressions where more than good... amazing screen colors, crazy performance, backlight keys, stylish design, burns bluray, amazing speakers... only downside at time what that the laptops was like a magnet for fingerprints... I remember that this little thing upset me in way at that time .....
I've had my Studio 1537 for over a week now, and I have two questions.
1. Do you experience sound crackling? If so, what Wifi card do you have? I have the Intel Wifi 5100 card, which does occassionally cause some crackling.
2. The headphone jack has some line noise which is present all the time. Do you have this as well?

the new looks, the really snappy and smooth interface, the new features, and the fast as hell startup time... WOW!
i was going to add some pictures but my connection is acting up again and i cant seem to upload anything so il just write some outstanding features:
1- the speed, its just so much faster than vista.... as simple as that, and it uses 630 megs of ram when i actually have 4gigs on this comp, while vista used 1.2 gigs, and as i said, the startup time is amazing .....

I will have to try to call them and order rather than order via the website directly as I want the Windows 7 Home Premium install and all the accompanying software to be in English (I live in Italy and that's the reason for the italian info in the configurations).
Opinions are greatly appreciated. I have read about the throttling issues associated with the i5s and i7s and I should not fall into those areas as I am not a gamer. What are everyone's thoughts? Go ahead and pull the trigger?
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their Studio 1558 orders? I ordered on 23/02 and the EDD was 09/03, but it's now been put back to the 01/04!
The only custom components I requested were the FullHD WLED screen and the backlit keyboard. I have to say I'm not very impressed!
With my 1730 I can get a 5.1 score. The 5.1 is because of my ram which gets a 5.1, I am upgrading and adding another 2gb so this will not be a bottleneck anymore. My next highest score is a 5.2 for my hd. Is there anyway to get a higher score for my hd? I have a 7200rpm, would adding another hd, and putting them in raid somehow make a difference? I would at least like to figure out how i could make the hd faster, after that my next lowest score is not until 5.4, and if i had a score of 5.4

I'm using win 7 build 7048 x64 working really well (way better and faster than XP sp3, however I never thought to use Vista..).
there was some issues with build 7000 and Adobe CS4 production apps (like premiere, encore, AE) now solved with 7048
The only nvidia driver I found working well are 179.44 for Win vista x64, installed without modding nv_disp.inf
the one provided from windows update for 7 (179.43 win7 i think) was not working (the screen turn white).....
Dell released a new BIOS for the Studio 1558 bringing it to A03.

The fixes say enhance system stability and video quality, whatever that's supposed to mean.
Just received my Studio 15 today and it's a nice looking machine but the fan seems to run more often than I'd like. I've updated the BIOS to A03, the most current, but it doesn't seem to resolve the issue.
