Dell Studio 1558 :: Windows 7 - System Crash / Launch Start Up Repair
Feb 17, 2013
My laptop is Dell Studio 1558 with Windows 7 as the OS. The issue is that now when i try to turn on the Laptop, its go'n to "Windows Error Recovery" with following options to enter:
"Launch start up repair"Â
andÂ
"Start windows Normally"
I tried both the option at two different times but its not fixing the error or starting windows normally and its stuck at "Starting Windows" screen. Then I tried to use F12 - Boot option- Diagnostics for which I am getting the following errors:
"Error code 0142Msg: Error Code:200-0142Msg: Hard Drive 0 - self test unsuccessfulStatus:79"
Now when i try the same option [F12 - Boot option- Diagnostics]"Error code 0146Msg: Error Code:200-0146Msg: Hard Drive 0 - self test log contains previous error(s)What should I do to resolve this issue?
I'm using Dell Studio 1555. I've use it around 3 years. Last week my laptop start making up problem.
Firstly it will suddenly restart while i'm using it. Sometimes it will come up blank screen and need me to restart back.
After that during start up my dell logo will take times to pop up. And will ask me to repair my window.
I've read some post here said that it maybe because of the CMOS battery and I've already change it and dell logo is pop up a little bist faster than before.
But right now my laptop could not be start up. When I power up, the LED button at the On/off button is ok.
The fan also running. When I plug in my Iphone it will be charge but there is nothing on the screen.
I've also put on external monitor but also didn't show anything.
And also there is no sound @ beep during my start up.
I have recently purchased Dell Studio 1558 second hand. On pressing the power button the laptop is beeping continuously for 6 times stops and starts beeping continuously again for 6 times and stops beeping...screen blank....From the dell studio 1558 manual available online I think it is a Video Card Failure. Is this a video card failure?
I got my laptop three or four years ago and today the screen just stopped working. First it faded white, then it came back on but faded black/white and now is not working at all. It stays black through startup and when it reaches the login page it is just a bunch of vertical lines.
Everytime windows updates my Acer AO722, windows will not start. This started after I did a factory restore. When shutting down windows updates my system and then windows 7 will not start up after a restart.
If you're just gonna tl;dr, read the first two and the very last paragraph, and look at the specs in sig.
I searched pretty thoroughly through the forums when I started my completecare process, but found no info, so I think this might be helpful for other people wondering what the Complete Care System Exchange / Replacement Warranty process is like.
So I've had a number of parts placed on the e1505 I purchased in summer 2006, every single component and plastic at least once except for the screen itself, a wsxga+ 1680x1050 - they literally don't sell these in laptops anymore.
It took a catastrophic spill outside my house on April 21st (i think), I tried to save it, but couldn't - screen had shattered, back left corner had bent up about an inch (heatsink assembly included), right hinge torn apart, but it still booted! I could plug in an external monitor and get somewhat though the boot phase (never bothered to fully boot back into windows after that)
Called in on the 22nd, they next-dayed a box, and i shipped it out on the 23rd.
Depot got in on the 28th according to FedEx, but I hadn't heard from them so I called in on the 29th to find out that the depot had in fact found there was fatal damage, and they were waiting on approval for a System Exchange .....
I'm having this extremely annoying problem with my HP Pavilion dv6-model1334us. Everytime I try to start up my laptop it always shows the menu screen saying Launch Start Up Repair or Start Windows Normally. I've tried to do a system restore multiple times, but the screen just stops on a blue screen. No it isn't the Blue Screen of Death, but it does attempt to start but fails and stands on the screen until it automatically or manually shuts down.Â
On a clean install of Windows 7 x64 RTM the latest driver available from Dell support (v6.10.0.6162, A14) seems to crash at random intervals. Only a reboot fixes the problem. It makes running the IDT drivers almost impossible but there are some features such as analogue 5.1 which I can't do without.
My Studio 1558 passes' the post test with the Dell logo and black bar underneath. Windows 7 does not load but the cursor appears in the upper left hand corner of the monitor. I can't log into safe mode or do anything with the computer.
Can I get folks who have the Studio 15 w/ATI post their WEI numbers? I'm concerned the Studio 15z from Best Buy is actually beating the 1558 and that disappoints me.

I recently updated my OS to Windows 8 but the Eject key on the keyboard doesn't work. I thought the problem would be solved by installing QuickSet but still the same. All other media keys (change display, wifi, battery, brightness, mute, volume etc) are working perfectly except the eject button.
I'm trying to do a factory system restore on my laptop and I am struggling to do it. I have been able to do it in the past...but I don't remember how.
What I am struggling with is I can't find the "Dell factory Image Restore" option. I do F8 > Repair my computer > Choose your keyboard layout > .....
But that is it. I never log in as an "administrator". I never get the chance to even log in. I'm guessing this is why the option "Dell factory Image Restore" never appears.
I have upgraded to Windows 8 on my Dell Studio 1558 recently. After the upgrade, none of my USB drives are working. I have tried to search on the net as well, but no success.
my Windows is not able to boot and I have to repair it with a Windows Vista DVD taken from another Dell (Desktop) PC. The installation is not able to detect a drive and so I am not able to select a Windows installation to repair. I need the drivers for the Harddisk (or controller) to add it to the repair process. The problem is that on the Driver support page only firmware for the hard drive is available but no .inf file that I need for the repait.
where I can find the .inf file or if it is possible to extract the file from the destroyed windows installation (via live-linux).
My current OS is Windows 8 Pro, Display driver: AMD 13-4_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe1  If set Backlit brightness to level 2 for example, and after some time display turns off (turn off display after X minute) by itself, or restart the laptop; the Backlit brightness level remains same (level 2) but the actual Luminosity (Intensity of backlit) changes to something else.2  If I decrease the Backlit brightness (Fn + F4) to level 0 (the minimum level), and if I further press the key combination (Fn + F4) to decrease Backlit brightness, it will change the Backlit brightness, but the Backlit brightness should not be changing because it already reaches to the minimum level. This issue doesn't happen in Windows 7 with the same driver. this apart from reverting back to ATI v12.1 ?
I have a Studio 1558 laptop, originally with Windows 7 which I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro. Â I have just installed a larger HD (1TB) to replace the 500GB which I thought might have been on its way out as it occasionally started clicking. Â I have also taken the opportunity for a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro. Â But the Device Manager does not show any Bluetooth devices even though the Bluetooth mouse works! Â However I cannot find any links in Devices & Printers to allow me to change the mouse wheel action or the Synaptics touch pad action. Â
Going back to the 500GB HD gives me all this functionality so the hardware is all ok. Â The BIOS settings still have Bluetooth enabled. Â I have updated Windows updates, and used Slimdrivers to update all the drivers.
I would like to know if a USB drive can be made bootable using Windows 7 Re-installation DISC given along with my Dell 1558 Laptop and can be used for clean installation of Windows 7.
I have a Dell Inspiron 3537 few weeks old. Originaly was Win8, but I update it to Win8.1.
After I registered laptop, next step was to partition my C: partition on two parts, partition C (OS), and D (Data). After that I successfully installed all programs I need. And after few days problems started with few BSoD. There are few problems and I will explain all of them.
My Dell checkup "Blue screen troubleshooter" reporting every few days one or more BSoD with explanation: "The unknown driver (C:Windows/system32/drivers/atikmdag.sys) appears to have caused a system crash. Complete the tasks below to prevent unexpected shutdowns in the future."
On same My Dell checkup I try to run "PC Checkup", and everything appear OK, no problems reported. Custom scan on only ATI video card (ATI Radeon HD8850), and result is "Passed".I also run build in DELL diagnostics (Boot menu) and there was no errors, and also Dell online diagnostics and everything was fine.
I try to install new driver from DELL website (AMD Radeon HD 8850M driver 13.151.0.0), but during installation, screen blinked few times and then went off. I thought that this is OK since video driver was installing. I left Laptop for one hour to "finish installation" but noting happened. I turned off laptop by pressing ON/OFF button for 5 sec, but after that laptop don't want to restart. Here I noticed other problem I will share with you in the moment. Fortunately, I installed Acronis True Image 2014 so I was able to restore a system. BTW, same driver version was already installed acording to "MSINFO32).
Now, my system is running, I can still see BSoD warning  in My Dell Checkup, but actually I don't actually see this BSoD. Strange. If I right click on desktop and then click on "Graphics Property" or "Configure switchable graphics" I get this warning:
Second problem. During my laptop beforehand explained "BLACKOUT", I tried to use Windows Recovery. I tried "Refresh" and "Reinstall" and both times I got message:
"Could not find the recovery environment. Insert your Windows installation or recovery media, and restart your PC with the media".
If I try to use "Dell Backup and Recovery", I got message:
"Dell Backup and Recovery has not been able to detect the recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted. To recover your computer to the original factory state and restore the Recovery partition, please use your System Recovery Disc." etc...etc...
I don't have any of this discs coz OS was preinstaled. So, basically I can't use any facilities to recover my laptop because I don't have factory recovery media or recovery disc. Fortunately I'm using Acronis, but that's not a point. I want something to recover my system to original, factory state.
Actually, Windows Restore facilities are OK and I can restore to some point I created.
BTW, my hard drive is partitioned on 7 partitions. Originally there were 6 partitions with huge C: partition. I split this one on two.Â
And also, since this BSoD is likely caused by video driver, how can I safely update this driver. As explained before, after first try I had disaster. Can I try to install new driver for AMD Radeon HD 8850M from ATI site?
I've got a problem with the laptop Lenovo T410s. I've put the new HDD on it (tried even the same with a different HDD too), and started to instal WIN 7 64-bit from the recovery disks. I used to do it many times so far with different Lenovo laptops without any problems. But this time, a while before the end of the instalation (when processing the sdrivebackup.wim) it stops and comes with a statement: " the recovery process has been finished, please ...." (but I see that the progres bar is far awayfrom 100%) , and finishes the instalation, reboot the computer and it comes the screen with the statement from the Windows Boot Manager:
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem (...)  File: Windowssystem32winload.exe Status: 0xc000000f Info: The selected entrycould not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt"  I read a lot about the ways to solve similar problems, but they don't work on my case. The strange thing is, that I can instal WIN 8 or WIN7 from regular Windows instalation disks (not from Lenovo recovery, but from normal universal Windows instalation disks).
As I told before, I tried it in 2 different HDD disks with the same effect. It looks that the recovery instalation stops before the end without instaling some files which are missing later during starting the system.
Acer travel mate 4060 * upgraded to 2 GB ram and windows 7 Home premiun 32 bit has just been recovered from a crash.
I am sending this message from the same computer. My built in speakers are not functioning . However when I connect an external speaker with a USB connection, its working perfectly well. I can watch videos and play music. I checked and it appears that there is no sound device installed.
My computer was being used by my girlfriend to watch some show. During her use, my computer "freaked up" and she had to manually shut it down. Now whenever I turn on my computer, it goes to my normal log-in page but instead of my password boz coming up, a gray window comes up. It reads:
"Start Up Repair. Windows cannot repair this computer automatically. If you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message, contact you system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance, Click Finish to exit and shut down your computer.
View diagnostic and repair detailsView advanced options for system recovery and support."I've done all that I know how to do, and I still cannot get this to go away.
I have Dell XPS m1330, and I'm having problem to perform factory restore. At the moment I have windows server 2008 installed for testing purpose. When I tried to perform factory restore by running D:ToolsPCRestore.exe on the recovery partition, it fails when reformatting the harddrive (see screenshot below)
I then tried the other method by rebooting, and pressing F8 when dell logo appears. However I couldn't find a "System repair" menu in there.
Is there any other method I can try to perform factory restore?
I've owned my studio xps 1640 for about a month now. Had zero issue with it. Yesterday, while doing some browsing, listening to a net cast etc.
I was notified by Vista that my card had failed and was reconnecting? This did not work and brought up a blue screen telling me that if this was the first time this had happened to reboot (which it then did anyhow) so I did not have time to catch the rest.
I went to Dell's site and Dl'd every bios, chip set and urgent driver update they had. I tried the Ati update but like others have mentioned it did not seem to take. I read that someone had this card fail on their first Studio. Is this behavior a forerunner of a critical malfunction?
I believe there are 8 of us with inexplicable random crashes. For me sometimes its been freezes that can't be ctrl-alt-deleted out of (need to pull plug and yank battery).
Sometimes its been BSOD. I average about once every 2 days between crashes. The only thing that I've seen that we all have in common is 6GB of RAM (I have a 4+2 hynix/samsung mix)
My PC worked fine for the first few days and then all of a sudden about 1/2 the time I would try booting up I would get past the BIOS post screen and then would only see a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left and it wouldn't load Windows at all.
I've reinstalled Vista SP2 clean, tried a clean install of Win7 RTM (fully legal) and then Vista SP2 clean - all with the same result of 50% or thereabouts the PC not getting past the blinking cursor undersco
My Dell Studio 1555 won't start anymore. When I want to turn it on, I get a beeping signal (2 beeps) and nothing happens. I tried all possible troubleshooting tips from the dell website (disconnecting all power and hold power button, reconnect to power, checked battery with the button on the battery, all fine, can't get into bios because computer doesn't start at all) but nothing works. Recently I also checked if the motherboard is connected properly and there is no issue either.
I also purchased a new dell adapter because my old one was a little bit damaged. The adapter is like the old one, and it's originally dell and the correct one for the studio 1555 so it can't be the adapter. Laptop also doesn't start when the battery is not in and it's only connected to the power.
While I would love to be able to go with the Studio XPS 16 (16470) it is just out of my price range. Here is what I'm trying to decide to pull the trigger on:
Dell Studio 15 (1558) INTEL® CORE™ i5-520M (2,4 GHZ, 4 THREAD, TURBO BOOST FINO A 2,93 GHZ, CACHE 3 MB) Memoria SDRAM DDR3 a doppio canale da 4.096 MB [2x2.048 MB], 1333 MHz ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570 Graphics Card Disco rigido SATA da 500 GB (5.400 rpm) Schermo widescreen Full HD da 15,6" (1.920 x 1.080) WLED con TrueLife DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD) with DVD Burn software Intel® Wireless LAN 6200 2x2 802.11a/b/g/n card (EUR) Garanzia limitata di 1 anno: Ritiro e restituzione 1 anno di supporto garanzia a domicilio, inclusi sabato e orari serali Batteria principale agli ioni di litio a 6 celle da 56 Wh Webcam integrata da 2,0 megapixel Colore Blu notte con finitura satinata Nessun supporto per danni accidentali Backup online DataSafe 2 GB, 1 anno McAfee® SecurityCentre, abbonamento per 15 mesi, Italiano Alimentatore CA da 90 W Total Cost with IVA (value tax) and Delivery is €829,36
I will have to try to call them and order rather than order via the website directly as I want the Windows 7 Home Premium install and all the accompanying software to be in English (I live in Italy and that's the reason for the italian info in the configurations).
Opinions are greatly appreciated. I have read about the throttling issues associated with the i5s and i7s and I should not fall into those areas as I am not a gamer. What are everyone's thoughts? Go ahead and pull the trigger?
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their Studio 1558 orders? I ordered on 23/02 and the EDD was 09/03, but it's now been put back to the 01/04!
The only custom components I requested were the FullHD WLED screen and the backlit keyboard. I have to say I'm not very impressed!
The hard drive crashed on my Inspiron 1750. We purchased this laptop in 2009 with Windows 7 OS. I am trying to find a link/section on Dell site to purchase replacement Microsoft Windows 7 OS CD/DVD for my system, but so far not successful. I did not create backup OS CD/DVD when I purchased, I thought I did.
