I have done the on-board diagnostics and the preboot assessment says that no diagnostic utility partition identified. I am hoping that I just need to replace the hard drive, but I did not make a restore disc before it crashed. Which of the drivers I need to restore the computer to it's factory settings.

The Dell logo appeared and then: PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. Reboot and select proper Boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.
I ran BIOS and passed all tests except that the hard drive was not detected.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 and everything works fine EXCEPT I can't access C:. What did I do wrong?
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust brought home a Dell Inspiron 15 from Best Buy tonight. While going through Windows Explorer and trying to figure out the goofy "Libraries" thing for Windows 7, I noticed that my hard drive is partitioned like so:
OS (C): 38.4GB free of 58.5GB
Local Disk (D): 186Gb free of 229GB
Now I am always used to everything being on 'C'. When I tried to copy all my stuff over from my previous Dell 1420, it wouldn't all copy over to any of the libraries or my "user" folder (Erin) since I didn't have enough space. So despite Windows 7 setting up all these nifty folders in my "Erin" folder (C:/Users), I can't fit all my stuff there.
Is Dell partitioning their hard-drives differently? Am I nuts for thinking mine is set up weird?
I bought a Dell Inspiron R17 n7010. I had some issue with the laptop overheating at times but overall it was working fine and I was happy with it. Three days ago however it seemed my hard drive got corrupted, as I got the error message "Cannot find operating system". I checked cable connection and to restore to factory settings through F8 but nothing worked and it seems the hard drive is broken.
Now I want to get a new hard drive through Dell, but my question is does the hard drive come with Windows, and with which version? When I bought the laptop through Dell two years ago it came with Windows 7 pre-installed, but no DVD/CD (I have the reg key on the back of the laptop). I have the Driver/Utilities DVD though.
My hard drive failed on my Inspiron 14z laptop. I ordered an exact replacement and installed it. The computer was purchased 2 1/2 years ago, and I downloaded the operating system on 4 DVDs per Dell instructions. After installing the new hard drive, I am downloading the 1st DVD. I come to a page that asks me to either click on "Restore my computer" or "Factory Recovery - Deletes data & resets all partitions". I click on Factory Recovery, hit next, and a new page comes up saying this application will recover your drive to the factory condition. "Do you confirm?" I click "yes", hit next, and I get yellow triangle with an explanation mark inside and it says "Your hard drive size is not supported for this process. Please use a hard drive at least GB in size.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 64 bit SP1. Recently I cloned my old original SATA hard drive for a larger Seagate (600Gb). All is fin apart from no windows update and an annoying request to activate. When i try to update I get a message that my service isn't running and I need to re-boot. It is running and a re-boot makes no difference. In System properties the laptop says it is activated but Windows thinks otherwise.

The windows 7 goes through the whole install procedure, but the last step "completing installation", it does not complete, but locks up. I have tried several times, and even removed the cd before the final restart, to have it search the HD for start-up soft ware, as I have read, but nothing works.

So my trusty Dell M6400 somehow crashed, hard, last night. I wasn't even there when it happened, but when I came back to my desk the system had rebooted, and was sitting at a BIOS prompt saying that no bootable device could be found, with the RAID controller indicating the status of my RAID1 array as "Rebuild". However,
when I went into the RAID controller setup, did nothing, and exited the setup, the system rebooted just fine (so maybe that "boot device not found" message was simply a way for the controller to prevent the system from simply rebooting, so someone is forced to actually look at what happened).
However, after rebooting the system indeed spent some thirty minutes rebuilding my RAID1 array. What makes this so particularly mysterious is that this system has never misbehaved in any way, plus there are no messages in any of the event logs indicating what might have happened. The Windows logs contain absolutely nothing, except for two errors caused by the sudden reboot itself

I purchased my Acer Aspire 7726-9829 in August 2013 and haven't had any problems at all until a week and a half ago. When running games, it appears my computer is heating up and experiencing a hard crash. (This only happens when running games. Browsing the web or watching movies doesn't cause the problem.)
At first I thought it might be the power settings, so I picked up a new power supply and set my computer to 'high performance'. (Which fixed minor clipping issues. The graphics now run perfectly for about five to ten minutes before the computer crashes.)
I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop and it's 2 yrs old now.
For about 6 months, it was saying that my battery was reaching the end of its usable life and I needed to replace it. However, it still worked fine, I just had to keep it plugged in.
One night though, I realised when I turned it on that the message changed from that, and instead it just said "You need to replace your battery". It didn't shut down in my face or anything the same time though, I coninued to use it and when I was done I just shut it down as usual.
The next day when I tried to turn on my laptop, it wouldn't come on. I assumed that this was because the battery died, but my dad told me that if I removed the battery and plugged in the adapter it should still be able to work fine. I did try this, but it still didn't come on.
What I would like to know is if the problem is just the dead battery, or if something else is wrong... someone told me that it could be a problem with the motherboard...
I know for sure that all laptops don't work without the battery, are dell laptops like that too?
I have an old Inspiron 1750. I bought a new Dell battery and I am getting the message plugged in, not charging. I have the original DELL charger. This was not a problem with the old (not DELL) battery, which still charged but only held the charge for 10 minutes.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have never had an issue with using the SD slot on the front on the laptop, until now. I extracted the SD spacer to insert an adapter with micro sd and the adapter will not fully mount into the slot. I have tried just a regular SD card with the same results. The adapter has no problem being inserted or popped out. I don't see anything 'jamming' it or a foreign object in the slot, as much as I can see in the little spot.

If you plug in speakers or a headset you have to wiggle the cord to hear anything but it keeps going out. So I'd need to send it in and have it fixed. I no longer have a warranty.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy 5050 crashes XP every few minutes, maybe half hour sometimes with an 0x07 blue screen.
I have temporarily taken to booting ubuntu (llinux OS) off a USB pen drive and it works fine, however, i might well see the HDD and DVD drive in Ubuntu but its not long before they dissapear from the visibilty of the OS. Of course this would be a crash in XP but not under these circumstances.
I can hear that the hdd is running and the cd drive will open so its not a power issue or temps.
I think the mobo ide controller is falling over or connections associated with it.
I cannot identify the ide controller (if it is a seperate component to the mobo itself) or investigate problem further without some knowledge & ideas from experianced members here.
Even trying to take this notebook apart seemed difficult & I gave up after a few screws were out. Anyone got a strip down guide/service manual and more importantly some ideas on my fault.
At first I was thinking of maybe a dry joint on the HDD connection but that was before I ran Linux OS and discovered I was actually losing visibility of both IDE hardwares. Not just the HDD, and not losing power either.
I've been looking everywhere for an answer to this question and can't find it. I have an Inspiron 9300 (old.. I know), and it still works great for everything I need it to do, except one thing. I have no storage space at all.
I've been looking at throwing in a new HD, preferably as large as possible.
The only problem is all the conflicting things I hear about these systems.
First off, I know that mine is an ATA model, not SATA. I'm definitely looking for storage space above all else. So whats the biggest drive this laptop will support? I've been looking at this one (Western Digital 250 GB 5400 RPM), but I've heard things about the bios only allowing hard drives up to a certain size.
I have a HP computer and I was wondering if it is possible to replace the Dell hard drive with the HP and save myself some money.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop, last week when switching on the laptop I was presented with an error saying "Disk Read Error", the laptop would not boot up at all not even in safe mode.
I ran Dell diagnostics and it gave me a error code of 0146 which is harddrive related. I then attempted to repair the windows installation using chkdsk /p and /r but this seems to have made things worse! When booting up, all i can see is a blank screen

I have a Repair Win 7 - 64-bit CD, made from the old hard drive -- do I use that to boot up the computer? Or do I use the old hard drive image that I have stored on an external hard drive?
