I have an Inspiron 1750 that will not recognize the hard drive. I have done the on-board diagnostics and the preboot assessment says that no diagnostic utility partition identified. I am hoping that I just need to replace the hard drive, but I did not make a restore disc before it crashed. Which of the drivers I need to restore the computer to it's factory settings.
View 1 Repliesmy laptop has failed the hard drive diagnostic with an error code of 2000-0142, and looking here in the forum I see it means that I should replace the hard drive. That being said, I am not actually having any problems with my computer. I ran the f12 diagnostic after a routine scan notified me of a smart short test fail and it came up on the diagnostic as well. Does that mean that at any moment I would actually see something happen?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought an SSD for my Insiron 3737 along with a caddy so I can replace the CD-RW with a 2nd hard drive. The laptop came by default with a WD 1TB hard drive which I removed and replaced with the new Intel SSD, the WD drive took the place of the CD-RW.
At first I had trouble booting when the WD drive was connected since that one had Windows installed on it as well. After formatting the WD drive I can now boot but a new problem occurs. Windows sees the WD drive a healthy, ready to use drive for a few seconds or minutes after booting and then the hard drive simply vanishes from Disk Management.
I checked the caddy even took it back to where I bought it from so they can check if it's faulty but it seems that's not the problem.
why the WD drive isn't recognized?
I have replaced the hard drives with new blank ones, but I cannot now reinstall Vista from the Reinstallation DVD because no drives are seen.
I have updated the BIOS to the latest available version, but still no joy.
I have taken out the drives and, using an external HDD port, can access them from another PC, so I'm certain there's no issues with the drives themselves.
I've tried Paragon 2010 Suite, but even that cannot "see" the drives, so I'm deducing that it's an issue peculiar to this Dell model.
I had a problem with overheating with my 1730 so emailed dell and they told me to hold Fn while booting and run a diagnostic test,
and after the memory test I "should" have had an option to "TEST SYSTEM" but instead I got a message saying "No diagnostic utility partion identified/found"
Just brought home a Dell Inspiron 15 from Best Buy tonight. While going through Windows Explorer and trying to figure out the goofy "Libraries" thing for Windows 7, I noticed that my hard drive is partitioned like so:
OS (C): 38.4GB free of 58.5GB
Local Disk (D): 186Gb free of 229GB
Now I am always used to everything being on 'C'. When I tried to copy all my stuff over from my previous Dell 1420, it wouldn't all copy over to any of the libraries or my "user" folder (Erin) since I didn't have enough space. So despite Windows 7 setting up all these nifty folders in my "Erin" folder (C:/Users), I can't fit all my stuff there.
Is Dell partitioning their hard-drives differently? Am I nuts for thinking mine is set up weird?
The only reason I purchased my xps m1710 is that I thought it was the top of the range model at the time, now all I want to do is replace the hd but at the same time retain all the functionality of the hidden restore partition and the media centre partition. You would expect Dell would make this easy for me as the owner and as Dell market themselves as providing user friendly IT solutions.
I have tried using trueimage to clone the drive but when trying the new drive on boot up it gets to the Dell 'blue bar' then freezes. I have tried copying partition by partition but this is even less successful.
I have tried restoring the restore 'ghost' image to the new hard drive but symantec ghost reports incompatibilities with the image file.
I am upgrading my original Samsung hd (SATA) to a new hd and would like to keep the hidden partition and mediacentre partition as my original hd. I have a new SATA hd which is currently connected in a USB enclosure. I am not a hd or filesystem expert and don't want to spend a year studying the goodells website.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 and everything works fine EXCEPT I can't access C:. What did I do wrong?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI8200 with orginal 40GB hitachi HD DK23EB-40. So I left the notebook run overnight (nothing new) has cooling pad and another fan sitting on the side running air over it. When I came to in in the morning it was locked so I rebooted. I got an error message and it doesn't want to boot. It does boot with another HD I have so the HD is the problem. I previously had a problem with another used HD that had a problem like this on another laptop and had someone i know work on it. To me it looked like he made a partition and placed the whole corupted OS with files inside of a fresh os install. I don't want to try and do a repair with the reinstall CD. Tried that once and didn't work so I don't want to to take a chance. Anyone know what he might have done? I have partition magic 8 if this is what's needed, but how to do this?
View 12 Replies View RelatedSo, I recently have been having multiple issues with my laptop, so I reformatted the hard-drive and re-installed windows. In the process, I noticed a 39-gig OEM partition on my hard-drive. After research, it seems like this is supposed to be a recovery partition with factory settings but I have been unable to access it, even after installing the Dell Datasafe (and consequently Alien Respawn.)
How I can restore the system to the recovery partition, as for whatever reason the drivers aren't working properly and I am having no backlights behind the keys or even the power button. I've followed the 'correct' driver install order and it still isn't working.
I have an acer aspire 7520 with a 80GB hard disc.the problem is it is split in two partitions of 40GB and I wonder if I can have it as just one drive of 80GB.I have tried programmes such as partition magic and windows disc manager but I can't seem to change anything,
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just started a DELL Precision M6700 for the first time. I also got some yellow paper with it with some "important information - 512e Hard Drive". I thoroughly read all info stated there and followed all the web-links. Finally I came to conclusion that I do have 512e Hard Drive. It is partitioned in 3 partitions and one (first) partition is "Misaligned". Hereby I also post a screenshot of the output of the Dell Advanced Format HDD Detection Tool and some basic info about my system.
Do I need to align this partition before proceeding further with using this laptop? What would be the consequence of leaving the hard drive in this state? How can I align this partition?
Inserted blank DVD to back up files.
Drive makes a noise then posts no CD or DVD inserted, although there is one there.
It will read both types of disc with data on them, but is totally unaware of blank media.
If I check the properties of the drive it shows the disc is full, even if it has already informed me of no disc inserted although there is one there..
Have tried the diagnostic software from Dell but does not flag any faults.
Going the clean install route and looking at the partitions, found this small Dell one. It's only about 40MB and uses only 400KB.
Looking with Gparted it's called Dell Utility and with Vista Disk Management, nothing but does say EISA configuration under status.
I have a Pavilion DV6-2140EI notebook with a failed hard drive. I purchased a new hard drive but to my surprise, all recovery disks or system image files are useless without the recovery partition on the drive. It appears that HP and Microsoft teamed up to not support hard drive failure. As you no longer get the original operating system on disk anymore, it looks like one is forced to purchase Windows again after hard drive failure.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a HP 2000 2b09wm. It just broke, giving me the error message saying in so many words that I needed a new hard drive. Guess the old one went kaput (even though I just bought this pc on eBay not a month or two ago). I have a new HD and a Windows 8 reinstall software from a dealer on eBay. I tried multiple routes in attempting to reinstall the OS resulting in as many dead ends*.The last thing offered up was to delete partitions in the new HD. I looked at an eHow page, How to Delete Partitions on a Hard Drive. It says to get a CD that includes fdisk.com. I burned super fdisk (2 MB) from SFbootablecd.iso and fdisk (40 MB) from fd11src.iso. I went to the BIOS to configure the boot order. I put Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive first, saved it and tried both CDs. It always just boots to a screen with this:

I even tried putting USB CD/DVD ROM Drive first…same results.
So, my questions to you, I guess, is firstly, why are the fdisk CDs not booting? Did I burn the wrong fdisk? Secondly, do you know why my OS couldn’t be installed using the reinstall software? I’m assuming the software is legit and the computer did in fact originate with Windows 8.

Another route for Windows Setup, I get to this: Select the driver to install: Browse for Folder - Browse to the driver, and then click OK.It gives you the list under "Computer" which includes "CD Drive (E HRM_CCSA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5" (the reinstall software) and underneath that, the folders - boot - efi - sources - support.Picking just the E drive itself, message appears: Load driver: No signed device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK.
Using my inspiron 2330 (only 18mths old ) as normal next thing it tells me it encountered fault and has to reboot anyway it keeps saying scanning and repairing drive (c) then does not allow me to log in so i manage to get into bios to do a scan and it guves me a error code of 2000-0142 validation code of 112406 and and then says harddrive 0-s/n wd-wmc152946178
When i finally manage to log in my desk top screen is flashing and keeps telling my hard drive fault ....
I was wondering how much you are into the diagnostic beeps our Dells now and then are providing.
A friend of mine used an external multi battery (suitable for other devices and laptops) devicee to charge her laptop (I believe it had something to do with solar energy..?) That didn't work out so well and afterwards the laptop smelled after burning rubber.
She handed it over to me but so far I didn't find out what the sound means. I read through the official service manual. The only suggestion I am getting is that I should contact a service provider. However, that does not seem to be most cheap solution.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought this laptop about 2-3 years ago, so nothing is under warranty. A few months ago the end of my A/C adapter cord broke off. I put it back together, and it would work when plugged in, but I noticed my battery would not charge. If I would unplug the laptop it would immediately shut off. Not sure if my battery coincidentally died at the same time I broke the cord, or if that had anything to do with it. I was told to buy a new battery. Still didn't work. I just bought a new A/C adapter. Still doesn't work. I'm positive both the battery and A/C adapter are compatible with my 1501.
Here's the message I get.
"Warning: The Battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery."
I then press any key to continue, but like it says, it does not charge.
I have been reading forums on this issue for quite some time now, and have seen people mentioning updating the BIOS. I ended up trying that, but still nothing. Well, atleast I think I did. I just downloaded this and installed/restarted:

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. At first the laptop displayed a message when first turned on "Warning: the battery cannot be identified This system will be unable to charge this battery.
Press any key to continue." I googled this warning and some recommended that the BIOS be upgraded. After the BIOS was upgraded the warning message did indeed go away.
But Windows XP still does not recognize this battery, and shows the laptop to be running on AC power even when the power adapter is not plugged in. Also, the charge light on the laptop does not light when the power adapter is plugged .....
On Start, I receive a message: Warning: The battery cannot be identified. The system will be unable to charge this battery. Press any key to continue.
When I continue, everything seems to be ok; the battery charges normally. The warning appears on every Start. This started recently possibly after I installed Norton 360 Premier security package.
Can I continue ignoring it or does it really have a message for me. The laptop is an Inspiron 1501 and is slightly under 2 years old.
