Dec 10, 2008
I just purchased a refurbished Dell Studio 1535 for my GF. I am getting no sound out of the speakers. I tried plugging in external speakers and Im getting the same result. I see the volume icon bouncing up and down when I play things, but there is just no sounds.

Got a new Studio 1537 and read a lot about the sound being improved by removing the IDT drivers.
The sound on mine isn't great but I've never had a laptop before so have nothing to judge it by.
Are the new 1537's still improved by removingthe IDT drivers or have Dell already improved it. I don't want to uninstall drivers if its not going to make any difference.

Below is my configure for Studio 1737 (no bluetooth/finger print reader) Outlet price $600.
I had it for 10 days and didn't install or touch any settings when I received it. Only had windows updated a few days ago. To test video/audio, I ran dvd and some sample wmv for a few days, video great, audio fine.
Everything was great until today, no sound suddenly...Tried to remove all sound devices in Device Manager and system restore to 1st day and still no sound. I had the notebook ON for an hour or so, then suddenly have sound again .....

Recently I've had this issue where the sound driver dies, usually freezing any sound-using programs with it. For example, if I view a Flash video on Firefox or IE8, the flash plugin causes kills the sound driver and the browser locks up. Skype will kill the sound driver too.
So will plugging in my USB microphone or sometimes my HDMI cable to my TV (I watch instant Netflix on it).
Once the sound driver crashes, I can't get any sound from programs like Winamp and even the Windows logoff has to be bypassed because it can't play the logoff sound. The internet is all but unusable unless I disable flash (because any flash page will crash it)

I've had my Studio 1537 for over a week now, and I have two questions.
1. Do you experience sound crackling? If so, what Wifi card do you have? I have the Intel Wifi 5100 card, which does occassionally cause some crackling.
2. The headphone jack has some line noise which is present all the time. Do you have this as well?

Long story short:
My sound does not play through my on-board speakers, but does play through external speakers or headphones. It is not a hardware issue, as I can replicate a way to make sound play through the on-board speakers temporarily, but I cannot figure out a permanent solution without doing a fresh install, and I'd rather not resort to that.
Long story:
About a month ago, my original hard drive failed. I was able to request a replacement hard drive under my warranty, which came with a self-installing image of Vista (and other Dell software). I was using Windows 7 beta on my old hard drive and decided to go with the release candidate for my new one. I bring this up because it seems I made a mistake in upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, instead of just using a clean install. On my old hard drive, I did a clean install of the beta and had to do some tinkering to make it all work, so I was hoping I wouldn't have any issues with drivers by just upgrading then removing the excess bloatware.
Well, everything seemed to go according to plan. I installed a bunch of programs, copied a lot of stuff from an old PC, and didn't suspect anything until, one day, I didn't have my external speaker jack plugged in. I wasn't hearing any sound, but knew that my on-board speakers should at least be working. I first thought I may have disconnected something when installing the hard drive somehow, but the hardware checked out just fine. I uninstalled, reinstalled, upgraded and did a number on my drivers, but nothing seemed to work.
I know that it is not a hardware issue, because I can replicate a way to make sound play through the on-board speakers temporarily. If I open up the sound options from the control panel and "test" both of the enabled devices while listening to music, my on-board speakers will temporarily play whatever music I'm listening to, and my external speakers will play the test sounds. It seems to be a weird issue where all sound is being directed externally, unless a test in progress, then the sounds that are already playing will be projected by the on-board speakers. To make it simple: the on-board speakers work if I run a test while listening to music, but only for the duration of the test (3 seconds), then the problem returns.
As of now, everything is exactly how I want it to be on my machine, and I don't want to have to do a fresh install just to fix this minor-yet-annoying issue.
Relevant information:
OS: Windows 7 Release Candidate 1
Drivers on Device Manager:
ATI High Definition Audio Device
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
(tried all of the latest IDT drivers, also tried Windows automatic drivers)
Sound Devices from Control Panel:
"Speakers / Headphones" enabled as Default Device
"Independent Headphones" enabled as Default Communication Device
(I have tried switching their roles, enabling, disabling and testing them all)

I don't remember when it started but my sound cracks and pops when I play games (NBA 2K10, WoW...) and sometimes when I'm watching youtube videos. However, it's fine when I just play a song on iTunes. Well actually, it pops a bit when I first start the song, but then the popping disappears, which leads me to think that the problem is somehow related to CPU/GPU usage.
So I've been on the web for quite a while now trying to find solutions...and here's what I've tried:
1) Using headphones (sound pops in headphones as well)
2) Turning off the wireless adapter (sound still pops with wireless off)
3) Disabling all enhancements under "playback devices" (still pops)
4) Checking IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers for Ultra DMA mode (got 4 ATA Channels, ATA Channel 0 is in Ultra DMA Mode 6, ATA Channel 1 is in Ultra DMA Mode 5, ATA Channels 4 and 5 are not in any mode)
5) Updating IDT High Definition Audio driver (updated, still pops; read somewhere that rolling back the driver would solve the problem, but at that point I've already reinstalled a newer IDT HD audio driver, which means I can't roll back to the desired date...)
6) Tried using a different HD audio driver (tried downloading a realtek HD audio driver, but I guess realtek = IDT?? same problem occurred)
6a) Eventually found some HD audio driver for some HP laptop (driver is now called High Definition Audio Device (under device manager => sound, video and game controllers))(sound still pops)
Specs:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40Ghz (2 CPUs), ~2.4Ghz
Memory: 4096RAM
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
Bought: Around July/August 2009

As you prob realized already, the SOUND Quality sux on the 1535's..I was googlin' around and came across this fix on how to improve the sound.
[url]
I followed this dude's instructions, and just like that the SOUND drastically IMPROVED!! Sound is much more crisp, LOUDER, and improved bass.
All you have to do is use the Default Microsoft Vista drivers instead of the crap Dell Drivers..Just uninstall the Dell Sound drivers, and restart the machine..Vista should automatically put the default one's in..

My studio 1557 recently had a motherboard failure of some type. Â When I would plug in the power cord, the blue light on the cord would go off. Â I noticed this after I was reading online and the laptop suddenly, without warning shut down and would not turn back on.
A Google search suggest that this came from a motherboard failure. Â I replaced the motherboard.
Now, when I plug in the power cord, the blue light stays on and it is charging the battery. Â The small white light above the power cord plug-in stays white while the battery is charging. Â But, when pressing the power button, nothing happens. Â The white charging indicator and the blue light on the power cord stay illuminated, but the laptop will do nothing else. Â No beeps, no lights, no sounds.
I assume the power button has failed. Â Am I assuming correctly, or is there anything else I need to check?

A new bios update was released today for the XPS 1645 which apparently enhance sound quality. Thats the only thing listed in the release notes anyways.
I installed it on mine, but haven't noticed a difference as of yet.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with 8600GT. I wanted to buy a 5.1 speaker set but it would be of no use as 1520 does not have 3 audio jacks while the 1525 and XPS 1530 has 5.1 output.
I was just wondering, if it was possible to somehow get an extra audio jack outside the laptop by checking if a header pin for a third audio jack exists on the motherboard since the audio chip is HD audio and motherboard design would be similar to 1525 and XPS 1530
I lot of people have openend up their systems and taken a look at the audio circuitry to fix the static noise coming from the headphone jacks. Did anyone notice if a third audio jack could be soldered to the motherboard to get 5.1 audio.

Okay, well the day before yesterday I was trying to watch Youtube but when I clicked on a video it had no sound. I thought it was Youtube, so I exited the site and thought I'd wait a little bit. So then I went to Spotify to listen to some music. I kept clicking and clicking and nothing was happening. Then I noticed a blue notice at the top that said something about my soundcard not working properly.
I then checked everything on my computer to see if it had sound. Windows Media Player...no, videos on Facebook...nope, nothing was working. At first I thought it was my daughter. I let her watch Youtube when she lays down for a nap. I came in the other day and she was hitting all kinds of buttons on my computer. I stopped her though and everything seemed fine. I also remember my computer updating that day. Could it be that something went wrong with the update? I don't know if that's possible or not.
Â
And also, what is a soundcard. Do I have to buy it or do I download it???
Â
I went to Yahoo answers and someone said to uninstall the drivers. I did that and then reinstalled them and it worked. The rest of that day I had sound on everything except for Facebook. Yesterday night it happened again and the sound has not returned since but my computer sounds are still working. When I logged on the computer made the log in sound it usually makes. I also tried to listen to a video with headphones and it still did not work. Â Again, I uninstalled the drivers and then re installed them and got nothing.Â

What I found quite interesting in the cnet review is that their performance testing of the Dell 1569 was second place just behind the Toshiba E205-S1904 (the other Best Buy Blue Label). I do not understand why, the specs are basically the exact same specs, EXCEPT our Dell has a 500gb 7,200rpm hard drive while the Toshiba has a 500gb 5,400 rpm hard drive. I would think, if anything our performance would be slightly better than the Toshiba because of our 7,200rpm hard drive. All the other specs are the same.
So, with that being said, why did the Toshiba have slightly better performance numbers than ours, since as I keep stating all the specs are the same except we have a faster hard drive?

Does anyone have any idea why? Is this something affecting Dell globally or is it just UK/Europe in a mess?
I guess I could survive with just wireless G, but it seems ridiculous to be limited to that these days;
I guess I could also just order it and pick up an intel/dell Wireless N card for ~£25 and install it myself,
but again the question arises, why is it necessary? I assume some of you do have an 802.11n card of some description in your 1645/1747's have you seen any problems with it? .....

Recently i ordered a Dell Studio XPS and like many of you with dell's,my main use was to be for audio production,dj'ing or any sort of thing pertaining to music. After ordering and then reading up online,ALOT of people are having problems getting the latency and/or pops skips & jumps out of their sound source.
Some say the problems lie within the Lan card, some say video card. And most importantly,Dell does not have an answer to the problem because they are not trained to understand audio type situations(Unfortunately).So...Here is where we are going to solve this thing(or try really hard because besides that...these are prett good laptops otherwise) Once i get mine in the next 3 days,im going to tell you what i did because i WILL fix it or at least try hard and fail.
