Dell :: Received M1730 Peculiar Video Stutter When Not Using SLI. Forceware Driver Reccomendation?
Oct 27, 2009
I notice that when I have SLI turned off, there is a stutter effect when maximizing and minimizing windows - this was occurring both in the Vista pre-installed as well as the Windows 7 x64 currently installed. When running SLI, no such issues occur.
As I want to disable SLI to avoid the excessive fan noise and save on battery life (I don't ever play videogames, and this was sent as a replacement), I want to figure out why this is happening.
1. What could be the cause of this? I can't imagine that a single 8700m GT isn't capable of smoothly rendering window max and minimization.
2. Would a forceware driver be better than the stock Dell drivers? If so, can someone recommend the latest, well-liked and stable forceware driver for Windows 7 x64? I know that some are better than others but navigating laptopvideo2go.com is a bit confusing for me.

I just got a M1730 with blu-ray and i saw somewhere that the matshita uj-110 bd rom drive my computer came with was an older model and there was a newer one uj-120. So i bought a uj-120 off of ebay, recieved it and installed it onto my laptop. When I tried to play blu-ray it would jitter or stutter.
I tried looking for firmware updates, talked with 3 different dell techs and anything else I could find on the internet to try (which there wasn't that many and no ways to fix.)
Come to find out my ide/atapi controller channel driver for the bd rom was in pio mode 4 and i checked the enable dma under the advanced tab numerous times and restarts to no avail. So i figure this is where the problem must be, the drive is in pio mode and i want dma (faster data transfer)

i ran across these drivers on laptopvideo2go.com and i really just have to let all m1730 users know about this. Stock dell drivers and drivers underneath 177.41 have had lots of issues running SLI well, expecially in Non-SLI friendly games like crysis. 179.13 is a laptop version of 178.13 by alienware. This is great stuff. This really has brought the raw power of my SLI out and i can feel it in all my games. Not only that it has lowered my temps by a few degrees over 177.41+ drivers. I strongly recommend these to any 8800m GTX SLI users.

Both m8800gtx have an error code 43 in hardware device manager (vista32).
Well, here is what is going on. I have an m1730 that has been working A1 since I got until yesterday when I installed CoD:WaW.
It might be just a coincidence though because the game was playing good for a while until I got kicked out of the game and when I tried to launch the game again it said I had a DirectX corruption. So I took a look at directx diag and saw no problem, except for video card info showed nothing!
This is where I decided to look in hardware manager and saw the dreaded exclamation point (error 43) for both my cards.
I did a full video driver uninstall, then did a driversweeper and took out all nvidia stuff and tried to install my drivers again and still get the same error!
Are my video cards messed up? I will be attempting a clean install on another spare drive today to see if it really a driver/software conflict.

If I bought m1730 with geforce 8800m can I upgrade it later to get the geforce 9800m? If yes, do I buy the video card and install it myself or I buy the card and dell technician will come to my house and install it for me?

I have noticed that some code that uses directx (opengl doesn't seem to have the issue, but I have not tested it extensively so it might just be a coincident) it seems to freeze on startup and hangs the machine to the point where the cursor won't move and that lasts for a good amount of time, maybe 20 seconds.
The odd thing though, is that when the game is running, it runs fine... even in Windowed mode. Except if I click another window outside the game, like I select the task manager window and then my machine hangs again for a while then I basically have to close the game, which takes a long time to close while my machine is hung and if I let it sit, it will eventually close and come back.
I have tried it in SLI mode (my pc specs are at the bottom), in Single mode, I searched online and some suggest it might be a video card issue, has anyone here with M1730 or similar machines experienced the same thing?

I just got this gamer today. Its a great game so far.I had the game on the auto settings for the graphics.Which I think was MAINSTREAM for all the options.Well,I was playing the game quite comfortablely.I was getting about 30fps.I am only guessing. But it was very playable. After about 2 1/2 hrs,the game was extremely choppy.Started to crawl like 5 fps!Did the system get too hot?Is it becuase I only have a single Nvidia 8700GT 256mb video card?

My work associates like both the 1730 and the new Sager 9261 for gaming and video editing etc. This has caused a real discussion that gets heated. I would like to get some Dell users input. It is true that the Sager has quad core but is 1 pound heavier than the 1730 and the Sager gets only 1 hour or so battery life. What would you say to them?

My new Latitude E6500 has been suffering from a "stuttering" problem. The symptoms:
1. When watching videos on the web (CNN.com, for example), the video and audio would stutter and pause, with "breaks" occuring multiple times a second.
2. When moving windows around the desktop, they would jerk along rather than gliding smoothly.
3. Most windows and programs would open slowly (for example, opening the control panel would take several seconds).
4. Task manager would never settle down to 0% or even 1%, but rather bounce along at 2-7%.
I tried re-loading the OS (Windows XP SP3) from scratch. Drivers, etc. Three times. Same problem.
Things seemed to run fine without Control Point software, which I was prepared to dump--but I do like some of its features.
But I discovered that choosing a Control Point power managment scheme was the problem! The solution was to select a regular old Control Panel power managment preset (one without DELL in the name). Problem solved! Task manager now settles down to 0%, videos run smoothly, etc.
My E6500 specs:
P9500
4GB RAM
Nvidai 160M
260 GB HD

I just reformatted my computer because after a year of internet browsing and downloading a bunch of games my computer wasn't preforming like it used to...
with that being said, I've been having some problems with reinstalling my drivers.
My Nvidia GeForce 9800m GT video card is being picked up by the computer but is encountering (error 43).
The other day, one of the video cards was working and the other had this error (error 43), now, since I've tried to reinstall the drivers both are not working. When the one was working I had downloaded the driver directly from the Dell.com website. I downloaded the drivers (that are currently not working) here [url] under The "Best" Drivers For Your Laptop. The two files under Windows Vista-32bit (my os) won't extract saying that no hardware was found that was compatible for that driver.
My Computer Specs:
Manufacturer: Dell
Model: XPS M1730
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz 2.50GHz
RAM:2GB
System Type: 32-bit Operating System
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 9800m GT

Ok About a month ago I installed Windows 7 installed Everest and after I did the mouse would freeze intermittently, etc. Well Everest was updated a lot and after I did a fresh install yesterday I installed the newest version of Everest.. Still the mouse freezing is STILL present, both with the touch pad and mouse.
Is anyone else having this issue with their SXPS 16? I've tried 2 different versions one older one new of Everest and 2 separate installs of Windows 7.

I decided to upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate after having run XP Pro on my M1530 for the past 6 months. XP ran flawlessly on the machine, but I wanted to bring the software up to speed with what's currently on the market.
So far everything is fine except for on minor issue. I am having a random spikes of DPC latency that are causing a brief 'stutter' or 'crackle' when playing audio or video files.
The problem was initially quite bad, but after installing the drivers found at Crackle Sound FIX for the WLAN 1505 card the problem has gotten significantly better. But as you can see, it is still an issue:

I think it would be nice for us M1730 owners to share information as to wich dirvers you've tried, with what games and what your experiences have been with them?
I'm having a pretty bad headache getting a driver that runs all my games just as well. I'm playing DiRT, Gird, Race07, UT3, BioShock, CS: Source, Quake4, Quake Wars and so far I've tried 173.13's and 167.51's from DELL, 174.82, 174.90 and 177.35 from www.laptopvideo2go.com and I've had mixed results. Sometimes I'm getting games reset SLI mid-game and then reverting to low-power clocks without it returning back unless I either restart the machine or enable/disable SLI or one of the cards in device manager.
But when it's running a game smoothly its FRIGGIN AWESOME! I just want it to be stable.
For the recrod I always uinsintall drivers, install Standard VGA Adapter drivers, boot into safe mode and use driver sweaper to remove all traces of the previous driver before trying the next one.
So whats it gonna be? Anyone else sharing my driver pain?

Specs: Core i5 540, 4gb ram, freshly formatted and windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
Running apps: Firefox, msn, skype, foobar, microsoft security essentials.
This is seriously becoming a real nuisance! Website pages are suffering real laggy scrolling and loading things up. Even pages without images are just as bad and much worse performance scrolling than my desktop e4300. Scrolling this page alone is treated like i have completly maxed out my ram (4gb) when i'm only on 1.7gb by having firefox and 4 forum tabs opened. My old core2duo could handle way more than this and run smooth on 2gb of ram. My friend said it could be the nvidia drivers, but i downloaded all the latest drivers from sony site.
I can't believe that an i5 could perform so badly for simple web browsing with no apps installed and the latest driver. I even switched the AC powered Z to speed mode with no help whatsoever.
I'm just wondering if anyone is getting any stutter, jitter, laggy issues browsing with their i5? It just doesn't make sense after a clean format to get such shoddy performance.

I have an M1530 that has the 8600M video adapter in it.
Currently I am using the Dell 176.44 driver and I am wondering if that is best. I notice from time to time that my desktop display gets very slow where the window tracking is not smooth like normal.
I don't play games on this laptop, as it is purely for business use, but I do use programs like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, GIMP.. and other design applications.

I've been out of the loop for few years, as in, not paying much attention to my i9100 (w/ATI 9800...unmodded).
Now I've totally dumped and reloaded it with XP pro and I am using whatever MS uses for a v-driver when there is nothing else.
Everything else has been updated with the latest from the Dell site, and XP Pro too.
I use this rig for light to medium duty gaming, and soon, I hope, watching net TV on it....and then all the other standard computery things that don't really need anything fancy for a video driver ....

My Vostro 1510 laptop came with the latest 8400GS video card driver from Dell. Is it unwise to try the latest driver from nVidias site?
I've been reading that some drivers can run a little cooler. HWMonitor says my GPU normally runs at 60c, a little warm from what I'm reading.

A month ago I bought Studio 1737 with ATI Radeon HD 3650 video card. From the very first day there was a problem with video driver or hardware.
Each day (sometimes 2-3 times a day) I get the following message:
"Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver igfx has stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
The display starts blinking for 3-5 seconds and after that it works fine again or crashes to blue screen with IRQL_NOT_LEFF_R_EQUAL. If it crashes to blue screen it will work find after rebooting.
Most of the time I use the laptop with the external monitor connected (I use it as extended desktop). And I think the problem might be related to the use of the external monitor. I tested 3 different monitors (Acer, Dell and ViewSonic) and it happened with each of those. So I know for sure that the problem is not with the monitor itself. In the same time it crashed only once when I used it without external monitor connected.
After trying everything by myself (re-installing video drivers, updating bios and even reinstalling viste) I called Dell. They asked me to do some things but couldn't figure out the problem. Then they asked to run a diagnostic test and it found Error Code 5300:1028. When I reported that code to Dell tech specialist he said I need to send the notebook for repair/exchange since that code means there is a hardware issue with video card. They agreed to send me another laptop. So I've been using the first one I got for about 2 week and each day it crashed.
A week ago I received the new laptop. It's almost the same configuration. Before setting the new laptop up I decided to run the same Diagnostic test and it showed the same error!!! I called Dell right away and they said it might not be a problem and asked me to use new laptop and see how it works. First day I didn't have an external monitor and everything worked fine. The next day I connected the second monitor and the system crashed just in couple hours. The same happens almost each day. But this one usually just shows the the "Display driver stopped responding..." message and doesn't crashes to blue screen. Anyway the problem exists.
Last week I've been contacting Dell each day. They didn't find any problem but keep saying it's a problem with drivers. They offered to send laptop to them for testing but I can't do so because I need the laptop for each day working.

Some specs:
7900gs, flashed to GTX. Idle at 55-60 C .
Dual monitor (one dell 19" LCD + laptop)
This setup worked OK for many months.
Today, this happened:
Wake from hibernation.
Browse homepage (internet)
Monitor blanks, mouse freezes
Laptop display blanks.
I turn off computer.
Here is status NOW:
I can boot in safe mode. I have cleaned old video driver.
Boot in regular mode. OK. (with video driver uninstalled)
Install ANY video driver (win XP, media center)- the display freezes, and blanks after the windows loading screen. I do not get to the log in page.
There are also strange lines all over the screen (during boot)
I need this computer for work, so I must fix asap. I would like to know if I should purchase a new video card.

Everything appears to be working fine in my win 7 installation with the exception of the video. If I install any video driver then the LCD display dim's down to <50% of its normal brightness compared to just vanilla VGA drivers. External monitor works fine.
I initially went with the official NVIDIA 186.03 driver, and this exhibited the dimming effect. I have since tried all manner of other video driver versions including laptop2go, etc and none of them work. Even had my first win7 BSOD when I installed Dell's latest Vista x64 driver .....
