Dell :: Restoring Value-add Software After OS Reinstall
Jan 30, 2009
I did a clean install of Vista on my Studio XPS 16. This, of course, blew away the applications that came on the machine, such as PowerDVD. Is there a way to get them back somehow or am I stuck without them?

My Dell Vostro 3450 (windows 7) had been running slowly for a while and after a virus scan didn't work, I decided to reinstall my operating system. I used the OS reinstall disk that came with the computer and that seemed to work pretty well. However, when it came time to install the drivers, I hit a roadblock. I put in the drivers disk and tried to go through the list of what drivers to install first (DSS, then chipset, etc...) but each time I installed something, it didn't seem to do anything-- I would go through the whole process for each one, but the little check mark wouldn't appear next to it in the "My System" list.... See below:
My computer can't connect to the internet either by ethernet or wifi, and can only input info through the cd drive.

I don't use it very much; it's more a backup machine and the occasional Skype to grandkids. Been having a problem with being unable to use windows update; keeps getting an 8007005 error.
Googling reveals a lot of folks with the same problem, some different fixes, and mixed success stories. I've tried several of the fixes with no luck and probably made things worse than they were before (now Defender won't update).....

I made a DVD as a backup of the recovery partition on an Inspiron 9300. When I run recover.exe, I can see the *.gho file and I can select it. But for some reason, it says it's 76GB in size.
I can't select individual partitions so I can't copy it to the second partition. I know it's not absolutely necessary to have it but the old hard drive was crashing.

Does restoring a Windows 7 laptop to factory settings (i.e., not a clean install) require anything extra besides re-installing programs, such as updating drivers, Windows updates, etc?

I have an inspirion 15R I wish to reset to factory settings, but I can't figure out how.
I've tried going into the control panel and doing it from there, but when I try to reset the system, I'm prompted to insert an installation disc for windows 8. The computer never came with a windows 8 disc.

I want to sell my laptop but i think it would probably be best to restore it to an as new condition first!
My first problem is when i got the laptop as new, it displayed 2 hard drives (or partitions i think) at around 100GB+ each. Now i still have the main drive (ACER C: showing 111GB) but i've lost the other. This started when my friend decided to install Linux on the laptop using GRUB, i got rid of it but it hasn't come back!
The other problem i have is, i tried to use the Acer eRecovery Management utility to "Restore system to factory default" but when i enter the password and click Ok, it simply restarts the laptop and that's it!
I'm not sure if the laptop came with any CD's as i've opened the original box and it doesn't contain any!

to put laptop back to factory settings, so I done the Alt/F10 on the Acer logo page to take me to the page to start this. On the Acer eRecovery Management Page I use the restore system to factory default, when I do this I get a message saying D2D32 - Type mismatch and then hangs there forever until you turn it off. I was reading on here about that error code and done what it said to do to make sure that it was enabled and it is.
I have rang Acer and they said theres nothing they can do as it out of warranty, by 24 days
He didnt make any recovery discs and hes pissed at me because this has happened! am not happy myself, as I rebooted 3 other acers with no problems.
Would he need to purchase disks or can they be got free?

I decided to restore my aspire 5930g laptop to factory defaults, and started out with creating the restoration discs. At this point, i wasn't really aware that one could restore from the harddrive.
So i booted up the discs and started the restoration process. But now, the dialog tells me to insert the third disc, while i only have two. What should i do? I could try to kill the restoration process and start over from the harddrive, but im afraid to harm the system.

I have MacBook Pro (MBP) Unibody (late 2008) with 320GB 5400 RPM HDD. I am planning to upgrade the HDD to 320 GB 7200 RPM (Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s).
I plan to use TimeMachine to do the restore of OSX and WinClone to do the restore of WinXP in BootCamp. The steps will be:
1) Backup OSX and BootCamp
2) Put new HDD in
3) Boot-up from the Leopard CD and select TimeMachine to restore. At this point, OSX should be exactly the same as in the old HDD
4) In OSX, run WinClone and restore the BootCamp partition (see question below
The current HDD is partitioned as follow:
- OSX: 48.23GB used / 173.65GB free = 221.9 GB total
- Bootcamp: 46.6GB used / 29.3 GB free = 75.9GB total
My understanding are:
1) During the restore with TimeMachine, OSX will be smart enough to create 221.9GB of Mac OSX Extended partition.
[Q]: Is this true? Or the restore will just destroy the BootCamp partition, or even worse OSX cannot recognize the Bootcamp partition anymore because Windows is no longer there?
2) The remaining 75.9GB will be left alone by TimeMachine
3) Once OSX is restored to the 221.9 GB partition, I can run WinClone to restore the BootCamp partition using the 75.9GB
Is this correct? Or do I have to create a BootCamp partition AGAIN using OSX BootCamp Assistant, but instead of installing Windows, do a restore?

I've been trying to restore my system back to factory defaults for a while now. I've tried pressing ALT + F10 at startup, but it just beeps loudly and brings me to a command screen, saying:
[ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN]
I've tried several 'fixes' but have had no luck, I would really appreciate somebody helping me, as it would save me in technician costs.

Problem: I cannot restore my hard drive to its previous condition using HP Backup and Recovery Manager. I would appreciate any help in this matter
Computer: HP 2710p Tablet/convertible.
Two weeks ago, I backed up my entire hard drive using the HP Backup and Recovery Manager choosing the "Back up entire hard drive" option. I backed this up to a subdirectory on an external hard drive. I figured that I could easily restore it back should it crash and have everything (operation system, applications, and documents) right where it was and as it was configured. I was running Vista Professional.
Yesterday I had some sort of problem that would not allow the computer to boot. Hardware diagnostics indictated that the hard drive was fine. I grabbed the recovery DVDs (these are Windows XP) that came with the computer and successfully was able to get the computer working again. So, now I have a working computer - though it is in XP not Vista. My intent was to restore the hard disk back to where it was two weeks ago.
I have unsuccessfully attempted to restore using the HP Backup and Recovery Manager. When I get use the "Start PC Recovery" option, it tells me, "The system does not have a recovery partition. The recovery process requires the recovery disc set or Rescue Disk." "Please insert disk 1 of the recovery disk set or the Rescue Disc." Here's the problem - I don't have these in Vista - only in the XP disks that I used yesterday to recessitate the computer. This is not what I want..........

I have been given the task of restoring my brother's laptop after his hard disk gave the click of death, only 6 months outside the warranty. I have replaced the hard disk. Fortunately all his documents and photos have been copied to an external drive, but unfortunately he has no system image or restore disk or Windows 8 intallation disk.
Is there anywhere on the net where I can get an ISO image to burn a Windows 8 insallation disk or can HP supply a restore disk preferably to restore the laptop back to factory settings.

My HP G60 came with Vista. It has been upgraded to Windows 8.1 but the audio function has become non-functional. Is there a need for a new driver to solve this issue? If not, I am thinking of restoring Vista from restore disks. Can the restore disks still work now that it has Windows 8.1 in it?

So I purchased my lenovo y510 (base model) in November of last year, and hasn't acted up at all until now. Before you ask I have tried to restore my computer to a previous point before it had this problem but it didn't work.
What happened was I restarted my computer, and then it went off, turned back on, went to the lenovo screen without a spinning loading circle, and then turned off and right back on again, determined to do the same perpetual cycle over and over again.
I have tried restoring and taking out battery with no luck.

I am trying to restore a corrupted M5 to factory defaults. Since the HDD was corrupted, the Acer eRecovery would not work. I purchased the Recovery Media CD set, changed BIOS to boot from CD, disabled secure Boot.
The System Disc comes up, i selected Restore Operating System to factory default. I get prompts to insert Recovery Disc 1, and after a few seconds get a message that the is no sufficient disk space to copy temporary files.
The HDD is 500GB, C: drive is 450GB and 415GB free.

A service case resulted in the motherboard being replaced in my T530 running Windows7 Pro. I specified that the disk not be reimaged. Upon return, when I attempted to boot the system, I ended in Startup Repair, which tried to automatically fix the problem and failed to do so. The result report indicated that all hardware tests passed without error and that the one cause was likely "Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem.".
One tech at Lenovo Support said that a new motherboard requires a reimaging of hd0 and offered ways to reimage back to factory defaults. Another tech suggested I should be able to restore the disk by reimaging with an image I made prior to sending the T530 to the service depot.
My disk image, made with Terabyte's Image for Windows, was of the entire hard drive. I reimaged the drive using a bootable Terabyte 'Image for DOS' with no errors. I have successfully used this procedure in the past to reimage a WinXP system. When I attempt to boot the reimaged T530, I get the same failure as described in the first paragraph above.
I suspect that the failure of the reimaged system might be a Microsoft Windows mechanism to prevent pirating of Windows, but I would have expected the system to boot and then tell me that my copy of Windows was not genuine.
Surely there must be a way to replace a motherboard without reimaging back to a factory image.

I have an acer M3 581T which I bought about a year ago. Now, windows crashed and said there was a file missing. I am no longer able to boot up the system, I've tried the erecovery (alt f10) but it just proceeds and says it's not able to boot. I have no recovery cd/usb at hand. It is of my understanding that this ultrabook has two harddrives. One SSD on which the operating system is installed and one HDD with the other files on.What do I do to make it work again? I do not care if all my files are lost.
