i've had my beautiful studio 15 for about 2 weeks now.
It runs awesome except the fan runs a lot sometimes.
AND
For some reason, the hotkeys: Fn+F3 (for battery) and Fn+F1 (for sleep mode) don't do anything at all.........the Fn+F10 for the eject disc seems to work fine....
also....I am wondering, what is the latest bios update for my system?
I am having a problem with my keyboard on my dell studio 1737. When you press certain keys on the keyboard the adjacent keys are activated as well as the key itself. I've tried various techniques I've read about to correct the problem such as removing power from the laptop for an extended period of time and installing new bios drivers but nothing seems to work. From the information I can gather this is a common problem with this model of Dell laptop. What is the best way to correct this problem. Will replacing the keyboard correct this problem or is there some other problem causing the malfunction?

currently the dominant functions of f1-5, and 7-12 are:
screenswitch, wireless, battery, brightness down, brighness up, mute, volume up, volume down, rewind, play/pause, and fast forward.
This means any time I want to use one of these F-keys i have to press function...it also means that when I'm playing wow if my hand slips while hitting the 2 key I end up disconnecting my self from the game (internet off!) UNACCEPTABLE!
Has anyone figured out how to get the damn media keys to work with Winamp??
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have had my studio 1735 since they launched last summer and its in perfect condition except for little black scratches above the speaker bar.
there is 2 similarly sized and spaced small scratches that are grey (they stand out).
I was wondering if anyone experienced this problem and no of a way to paint over them or order a new metal casing
I just got my Studio 17, and there's little things that really bother me:
1) My F keys act as a function+F in games and not the actual F key, so I can't cast spells that are bound to my F keys. Anyone know how to disable it so that if I want to see my battery status or Wifi status, it requires the function key to be held down?
2) Some of the games I play such as warcraft 3 have 2 black lines on the right/left of my screen. They won't let me go full screen no matter what I try
It's a dell studio 1535 laptop.
Issue is, when i turn it on, the lights on the media keys all flash, individually from left to right very quickly, then nothing.
I have reseated the ram, tried it without the battery in and no joy, the fans don't spin.
Anyone know of a way to make the QuickSet media keys work with iTunes when using another application? Big annoyance to have to navigate back to iTunes when I want to change the song or stop it, though the Win7 Jump List controls help a bit.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently had to reinstall windows on my XPS 15 (l521x) and i now have the F-keys working with their assaigned function (Brightness, play/pause, volume, etc) however, the graphic overlays no longer appear.
For example - Fn + Brightness^ - will increase brightness but with no graphic showing what the current brightness level is.
Any way to get this useful feature back?
Have 19 month Dell XPS 13 but all of a sudden certain keys stopped working.

It's more old school (bb guy said it would collect dust under keys more), but it's easier to use. Does anyone know if the insp15z has a keyboard with raised keys?
Anyone else find the big flat keys harder to use? Is there some advantage to these, thus Dell made the change? I wasn't wild about the Sony chicklet style either. Lenova seemed easiest to me of the ones I tested in BB.
Anyone have pics of an SXPS 13/16 keyboard with some/all keys removed? I'm curious as to what it looks like and am too scared to remove my own.

View 6 Replies View Relatedif i turn the pc off, when i turn back on, no boot up, no chance to press f2 f12 f8 nothing. the only thing that happens is the disk read light stays on, and the caps lock and looks like system lock lights keep flashing. the system will then eventually power off. i removed the battery (the laptop was always plugged into power) and it started. i then placed the battery back and it started normally.

On my old laptop they lit up left to right then stayed on, that computer had bios A08, this one has A10 and im running windows 7, even on a bios boot they do not start ever
Is it possible to leave the light on, for those glowing quickkeys at the top of the keyboard?
I find it hard to locate them quickly (e.g. mute, or eject), even in a brightly lit room.
The dark grey icons are hard to see depending on lighting/angle/glare, etc. When I press them, they light up very nicely and I can see them very well.
I struggled with this on 2 occasions. I had found the answer once and couldn't remember the second time around. In searching I found many do not know how to use keys that do not appear on your laptop physical key board. The following info at least works on a Dell XPS 14Z. Let me know if this works for you.
Computer Info (Typing ASCII on XPS 14z)
To pull up On Screen Keyboard to type ASCII on XPS 14z Laptop, use the following process. To add text info into Photoshop using ASCII is may be easier to type it in word, then copy and paste.
Click Windows Icon (Open Windows Start Menu)
In the “Search Programs and Files” field, type OSK
Depress <enter>
An on screen keyboard should pop up.
For example to create a Copyright symbol © using ASCII
Hold down the Alt Key on your physical keyboard
While Holding the Alt Key use your cursor or touchpad and on the On Screen Keyboard
Move to 0 and left click
Move to 1 and left click
Move to 6 and left click
Move to 9 and left click
On your physical keyboard Depress<enter>
The © should appear

Where exactly are Dell service tags and OEM OS serial keys stored on Dell laptops? When you reinstall Windows, you don't need to enter the serial key because the laptop has the key linked to it. Where though? I read it's in the BIOS but isn't the BIOS part of the motherboard?
I'm about to change my M1330 motherboard and am just wondering if my service tag and/or my original Vista key will no longer be linked to/remembered by the laptop once I put the new motherboard in.
I've owned and used dozens of laptops in my day, but never have I come across a keyboard that refuses to let me have the key. Usually I can wedge my fingernail in under both sides of the key and just "pop" it off .....

The drivers were good and I can attach keyboard via USB for full functionality. Could it be a problem with the palm rest where the keyboard attaches to or something else?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently bought the Inspiron 1545 and to be honest was actually quite struck by how simple everything was in the design. However there is only one problem that I found when I use the laptop. In order for the function keys to be used, I would need to press Fn+(Function Key) Eg. Fn+F1. Now obviously function keys are supposed to act like a shortcut key for certain activities. This actually defeats there purpose. Instead by pressing those keys without the Fn key, I would be able to use the multimedia keys and anything else on the keys with a white symbol on.
I was wondering whether there was any way in which I could swap round the functuion of the keys so that I can use the function keys without having to press Fn?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. I find it jumps back in my typing either several words or lines and types from there.
I seem to hit two keys simultaneously and it makes the email send. Usually these are the keys g & h and have also seen it happen when connecting with the letter B.

I recently bought an Inspiron 14z and I rebooted it for the first time the other day after properly plugging it in and starting to set it up. It froze on the Dell logo and for some reason I can't use f2, f1, f8, or f12 at all to get to the boot menu to fix it!
