Dell :: Studio 17" Good LG WUXGA Monitor?
Feb 10, 2009
I recently got a Studio 17" WUXGA screen and as i was testing out my computer and following Les's removal bloatware guide [big thanks] and reading many of the posts in the Studio owners thread I tried to identify my screen.

The CCFL WUXGA screen belongs to a precision M90 and is almost 3 years old. Keep that in mind for this review.
The RGBLED is way brighter than the CCFL; at nightime, I would only use the minimum brightness setting.........................

whether the optional WUXGA (1920x1200) display is an LCD or LED? I know the base/standard WXGA (1280x800) is an LCD and the WXGA+ (1440x900) is an LED, which explains why it's a $125 upgrade.

I have two friends that have them and I like them. I really like the fact they have true HD screens. Although When I build it on Dell's site I dont get an option for HDMI. My one friend has an HDMI port on theirs.
Anyways are they any good?
I would get the 2.20 Core i3 version i think.
4gig ram.
and I think the stock intel HD graphics.

I am looking for a new laptop for school, and I have been looking closely at the Dell Studio 15.
I have a couple of member discounts on Dell.com (I have built this same one on the dell website), but they don't seem to do enough to match the low cost of this one from BestBuy:

Can someone tell me if I am missing something huge about this particular computer?

I am interested in the Dell Studio 15, but I'm in no rush to purchase. Is this a good time to spend the money? Is there a hardware upgrade or a new release looming?
What should I do?

I've been doing a lot of research lately and I have come to the conclusion that as far as the specifications go, the Dell Studio XPS 13 is what I want.
However, I am concerned about the overheating in the laptop, as reported by some reviewers on the net. I don't mind if I can't keep it on my lap (my dv6137tx couldn't be kept on the lap for too long either!), but I am concerned about failure rate increasing due to heating.
Also, I am wondering if its a good value for money given that it is costlier than the Studio XPS 16, 17, etc and still comes with only a 13.3" screen. I would be happy to hear from other Dell users, Studio XPS 13 owners in particular.
The rough configuration I was looking for before coming across the Studio XPS 13 was:
1. CPU = Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (or better), [1066 Mhz FSB with 6 MB L2
Cache preferable]
2. Memory = 3GB DDR3 at 1066 MHz
3. Graphics card = nVidia GeForce 9500 or higher
4. Hard disk = 250 GB, 7200 RPM
5. Screen size = 15.4" or higher
6. 8x DVD ± RW Drive
7. Internal Modem
8. Integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet card
9. Integrated Wireless adapter
Oh and I am interested in running Linux.
The Latitude E6500 cannot be shipped with the GeForce 9500 card and I am getting it only with an nVidia Quadro NVS160, which I understand is as fast as the GeForce 9200 .....

It comes with an Intel Core i5-430M Processor (2.26Ghz, 4 Threads, Turbo Boost up to 2.53 GHz, 3M cache) while Studio 15 has an i3 processor(2.13 Ghz). It has the same Graphics card as Studio 15 and the rest of the features are also almost the same.

I'm looking to purchase a powerful notebook for my development needs. I use MS Visual Studio 2008 (in a VMware virtual machine), currently running on my DELL Precision T7400 desktop workstation (Dual Intel Xeon X5482, 3.20GHz / 32GB RAM / 4 x 300GB SAS HD with 15,000rpm). This thing is a pleasure to work with, everything just flies, even when multiple virtual machines are running at same time.
In next months I need to spend some time developing and testing at my customer's site. Now I need something comparable to my T7400 in means of performance, but portable. My first idea was, of course, a M6500. It seems to be a very powerful beast. However, until now I have no experience with such "mobile workstations". Can this thing really deliver what it promises?
Here is my configuration: .....

I've been reading this forum for a while just havent had a reason to post until now. I got my Studio 1735 in September with an ATI 3650 video card.
Recently i've started using an external monitor also from dell. Rather annoyingly every so often the screens start flickering and it says that the video driver has failed.
After that I get the BSOD. I've tried updating to the newest video drivers on dell site and it didnt change anything.

I'm a fairly advanced computer user (CS degree, etc), but I've had a horrible time trying to find a reasonably priced laptop that will run a 30" external monitor at 2560x1600.
I finally decided if a an output other than DVI-D would work. I found the XPS 16 which looked like a really sexy laptop, and I checked to see that the the 4670 supports 2560x1600 in theory, and that the DisplayPort to DVI-D would work in theory. I found two other posters on a non-computer forum who said they ran 2560x1600 off an XPS 16.
I tried to verify with Dell that DisplayPort would support 2560x1600 with a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter. I finally found a sales person that sounded reasonably intelligent, and had him contact tech support to verify that it would do so.
So, I started my XPS 16 a little over 24 hours ago, and the the reported resolution from the monitor is 1280x800, and I haven't found a way to override that in Catalyst. (and no, I wouldn't be happy with using a 1080p 12xx by xxxx resolution)
I've spent over an hour on the phone with tech support and can't get anyone that even seems to comprehend the issue (Are you sure your monitor supports that resolution? Is it turned on? Has it worked before at that resolution? etc.)
I THINK an issue is that the monitor is seeing the connection as single link DVI and so only reporting 1280x800, but I don't know....

I just bought a Dell Studio XPS 16 second hand, advertised with an RGBLED screen.
The laptop works great but I am very sceptical about this display, all the reviews harp on about how amazing it looks but I can't really see much of a difference between this screen and my WLED monitor.

Dell only offer the 1080p (WUXGA+) screen(s) in the country I am in. I am planning to get the 15.6'' one. the high
I think I will have to find a place where I can have a look on a notebook with that screen, and see if I can handle it. Right now I am very sceptical. I just can't believe that Dell do not offer the 720p screen when I am finally ready to take the plunge.
Is there anyone here that can actually use WUXGA+ on 15.6-16'' without having to resort to changing DPI, font size or zooming?

I met a guy who had a e1705 with the 1440 by 900 LCD with Xbrite, and I must say that I felt it was a great looking LCD. As a gamer I can't help but feel that my games would perform better along with my 7950 GTX with a smaller native resolution. And it wouldn't bother me because it still has the Gloss and Xbrite like features.
I was wondering if someone out there knew what type of gains and losses I'm looking at overall. I'm seriously considering changing out my LCD on my M1710.
But.... My blu Ray's wont' work will they? Well they won't play at 1080 anymore right?

It's actually weird that of the two possibilities for the the panels on each type
WXGA+ WLED ...samsung has the better one
WUXGA 2CCFL....LG has the better one?
is this right? If not i'm going to try to have it replaced with the RGB LED when it's available

I'm thinking about buying a M4400 with WUXGA 2CCFL screen.
I'm a web developer, so I need "space" on the screen for running programs as Eclipse, etc... However I'm a bit worried for if the fonts (reading text, typing code...) are very small.
I read that the Vista DPI scaling engine is really good and can solve this issue.
Could anyone attach some screen captures with 96 dpi (default) and 120 dpi, using Vista DPI scaling?

discussion on the RGB WUXGA screen but nothing definitive. This display is the main reason I am interested in the M4400 over the W500. Can anyone comment on the quality of this display? Is it bright, good contrast, ect? Also, the Dell online site says it is a "TRUELIFE" which I believe means it is a glossy screen. Do they offer a non glossy screen over the phone?
My other questions are a bit more minor:
Does this laptop use the Centrino 2 G45 chipset? I ask because the Dell's don't have DDR3 memory which I thought was a requirement for Centrino 2 chipsets?
What is the size of the HDD slot? The Dell configurator allows for 2 HDD's. Does this mean there are 2 HDD slots or is it using the DVD slot for the 2nd HDD?
Does this laptop do well with SDD's? Specifically Intel's speedy SSD's? I know the Lenovo's cannot use the full speed of the SSD because Lenovo slowed down the SATA port for battery life.
Is the keyboard and trackpoint good quality? I know Dell consumer laptops have horrible keyboards. Does this compare well to Lenovo keyboards?
How is the overall build quality? I know it is a magnesium structure. I am mostly concerned with how stiff the screen is? I hate screens that wobble around.
Is there anything else I should know about this laptop?
This is what I am looking at:
Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4Ghz / 1066Mhz FSB / 3MB L2)
Windows Vista Basic
1GB DDR2-800 (2x1GB)
Internal Backlit Keyboard
Nvidia QuadroFX 770M 512MB
80GB 5400RPM HDD
15.4" UltraSharp WUXGA (1920x1200) RGB-LED TRUELIFE Display
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module
Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11a/g/n Draft Mini Card
6 Cell Battery
3 Year Basic Limited Warranty and 3 Year NBD On-Site Service
$1811
I will add my own memory and hard drive and upgrade the OS to Vista Ultimate using my schools free upgrade.
