there are many out there that likes to dab in linux, unix, opensource, and usually those folks demand nvidia video, and will not even think twice about a rig unless the nvidia option is available..
ati video cards are very hard, if not impossible to configure with linux..i know, i have tried.....i just wonder who makes these decisions for dell, and if they even smart enough to realize this...
i went to dell laptop sales chat ,and asked them about the nvida choice -
1. don,t have info 2. might be a product shortage 3. design team made the ati decision 4. will pass along the info
I have dell studio 1737 with a core 2 duo T9400, 4GB Ram and ATI Mobility Radwon HD 3650 and i was wonderfing if i could change out the video card for a 512?
I'm looking at the Studio XPS 16 right now, because the Studio 17 doesn't have the option of coming with a 512 meg video card ( very disappointing )
If you look at the base system for the Studio 17, it's an amazing machine with the 2.4 ghz chip, for around $1,000. Crazy stuff. This is a beautiful laptop, but with only 256 megs of fram on the video card it just isn't good enough.
With that said, what other options are there for laptops with a 2.4 ghz chip, and a 512 meg card out there right now ?
A month ago I bought Studio 1737 with ATI Radeon HD 3650 video card. From the very first day there was a problem with video driver or hardware.
Each day (sometimes 2-3 times a day) I get the following message:
"Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver igfx has stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
The display starts blinking for 3-5 seconds and after that it works fine again or crashes to blue screen with IRQL_NOT_LEFF_R_EQUAL. If it crashes to blue screen it will work find after rebooting.
Most of the time I use the laptop with the external monitor connected (I use it as extended desktop). And I think the problem might be related to the use of the external monitor. I tested 3 different monitors (Acer, Dell and ViewSonic) and it happened with each of those. So I know for sure that the problem is not with the monitor itself. In the same time it crashed only once when I used it without external monitor connected.
After trying everything by myself (re-installing video drivers, updating bios and even reinstalling viste) I called Dell. They asked me to do some things but couldn't figure out the problem. Then they asked to run a diagnostic test and it found Error Code 5300:1028. When I reported that code to Dell tech specialist he said I need to send the notebook for repair/exchange since that code means there is a hardware issue with video card. They agreed to send me another laptop. So I've been using the first one I got for about 2 week and each day it crashed.
A week ago I received the new laptop. It's almost the same configuration. Before setting the new laptop up I decided to run the same Diagnostic test and it showed the same error!!! I called Dell right away and they said it might not be a problem and asked me to use new laptop and see how it works. First day I didn't have an external monitor and everything worked fine. The next day I connected the second monitor and the system crashed just in couple hours. The same happens almost each day. But this one usually just shows the the "Display driver stopped responding..." message and doesn't crashes to blue screen. Anyway the problem exists.
Last week I've been contacting Dell each day. They didn't find any problem but keep saying it's a problem with drivers. They offered to send laptop to them for testing but I can't do so because I need the laptop for each day working.
I've ordered a Dell Studio 15 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with 256MB. Now I am getting info that the 256MB version uses DDR2 and the 512MB version uses
DDR3/GDDR3! IS THIS TRUE?! If it is, I only have a few hours before I can change my order!
I called up several dell techs/sales reps and NO ONE HAS A Cute my little pony CLUE .....
I would like to say you all have been great in helping me out and making sure that this is the right notebook for me. One of you PM’ed me saying that the HP 15 Envy might be better for me due to the fact that it is a better gaming card.
I totally agree with you and I appreciate you letting me know more about it, I took a good close look. However, the Envy just wasn’t for me. Theres no backlit keyboard, optical blu-ray drive, or RGB screen.
However they are similar in size, the Envy even being thinner. So I would say it is logical to have an ATI mobility 4830 or 4860 placed into the studio 16 notebook. Their both smaller at 40nm so they run a lot cooler and use less power. Of course I would prefer the 4860HD .....
FYI Dell released a new video driver for the studio laptops today. It said it increases compatibility with external monitors. I wouldn't know since I've never hookem mine up to an external. But I will dl just to stay up to date. You can find it here:
here's the skinny. After what seems like an eternity I've finally got this bad girl in my hands. The screen will blow you away, well for me at least. The edge to edge display looks just beautiful and at full brightness it has enough light energy to power 25 homes for 2 years. The hinge design is awesome. Other than the paint job and the edge to edge display I'd assume it's pretty much like a regular studio.
Speaking of which....it's a fingerprint magnet, but that's to be expected. I'm afraid somebody will end up lifting one of my prints with a piece of tape and logging into my computer. I like how the black and red meshes together, not too bland but not too extreme either. Besides the keyboard and the red bezel around the screen the entire surface of the notebook is glossy, I'd describe it as piano black.
I'm surprised at the level of crap. It's actually minimal. Right now I'm contemplating doing a clean install, but I want to go x64 because I don't like having 1gb being wasted. But the average user won't need to do a clean install.
There are a couple of quirks though. The touchpad takes a bit of getting used to, it felt kinda rough and hard to use at first. I'm noticing a bit of keyboard flex across the board.
So yea, overall I like how it looks and feels. It runs like a bat out of hell with minimum tweaks to the factory install. I'd recommend it over a regular studio 15 any day.

You need isopropyl alcohol(99% or high purity)/arctic clean solution would work too with Q-Tips to clean up the previous compound. So please have that handy guys.
Also watch this video on why I will not spread the compound but put a pea size dab of the compound and let the pressure spread it. But this to "video controller" and "video controller (VGA compatible)" still can't find the way to fix them, I went to dell's drivers download page and the drivers don't fix the problem!!!
I've been told that I need my video controller working so I can put my computer into standby or hibernate, since that option is not working on my computer.
My computer works fine but I really would like to fix this two issues!!!
Ethernet Controller is another device that is not working, but I'm not too worried about it since I can connect to the internet using my wireless card
What I found quite interesting in the cnet review is that their performance testing of the Dell 1569 was second place just behind the Toshiba E205-S1904 (the other Best Buy Blue Label). I do not understand why, the specs are basically the exact same specs, EXCEPT our Dell has a 500gb 7,200rpm hard drive while the Toshiba has a 500gb 5,400 rpm hard drive. I would think, if anything our performance would be slightly better than the Toshiba because of our 7,200rpm hard drive. All the other specs are the same.
So, with that being said, why did the Toshiba have slightly better performance numbers than ours, since as I keep stating all the specs are the same except we have a faster hard drive?
Does anyone have any idea why? Is this something affecting Dell globally or is it just UK/Europe in a mess?
I guess I could survive with just wireless G, but it seems ridiculous to be limited to that these days;
I guess I could also just order it and pick up an intel/dell Wireless N card for ~£25 and install it myself,
but again the question arises, why is it necessary? I assume some of you do have an 802.11n card of some description in your 1645/1747's have you seen any problems with it? .....
I'm trying to watch a video that's 1080p and it skips frames. My framerate will stay around 30ish but then every couple of minutes or so will dip down to 7. I would think my specs would be fine... any suggestions? For what it's worth, it's a matroska (.mkv) file and I am trying to run it in VLC media player.
I bought this (used) about a year ago and everything worked fine up until about two weeks ago. At that time I was reading some pages on the Internet and the screen began to flicker then turned black with some vertical green lines. I shut down the computer and then restarted it. Everything worked fine for about an hour and then the process repeated itself. For the last two weeks I have had on and off problems with the laptop working correctly for a while and then crashing.
I tried reinstalling the video driver for the nVidia Quadro NVS 135M from the Dell website and it seemed to work for about 4 to 6 hours and then the D630 crashed again. Next, I tried reinstalling Windows XP Pro and once I had gotten all the updates, I installed the video driver from the Dell website. Everything seemed to be fine so I started reinstalling all the various software programs that were previously installed. With only one or two more programs to install the screen began flickering once again and so I shut the laptop down.
Last night I reinstalled Windows XP Pro again but without reinstalling the video driver, any Windows updates, or anything else and left everything running. This morning the screen appears normal.
My technical skills are very minimal and I have run out of things to try. Now I am wondering if it is possible (or even a good idea) to run the computer without reinstalling the driver for the video card. Is this going to lead to other problems or is it going to frustrate me because the computer will simply run very slowly without a driver for the video card installed?
I have a Dell XPS-M1710 and I've tried a few different third party video drivers, but when I try ot play a Blu-Ray movie it says that the drivers aren't Blu-Ray compatible. I'm back using the Dell ones, but they really suck, especially for gaming, and even more so with newer games. Does anyone know of any good video drivers that can play Blu-Ray movies?
My 1530 has some video/audio issues going on. Seems to be hanging up whatever application I try to use to play any video even my browser when I try to play a youtube video.
Even when I try to slide the volume control it goes to "not responding". Sometimes if I wait long enough it will play but then the audio gets a lot of static .....
I;ve reinstalled my OS system due to too many BS on my laptop and started from square one. All is good but my videos are now lagging. MPEGS, flash Videos from the WEB (Firefox) and others. Surprisingly youtube-like sites work no problem. and to think i was running Gears of war pretty good before the whole MESS-uP.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 purchased in 2005, running Windows XP SP3. Just recently my video screen started turning off after a few minutes from logging in. I have tried using the function key along with thr F8 button, but it does not seem to work.
Recently i ordered a Dell Studio XPS and like many of you with dell's,my main use was to be for audio production,dj'ing or any sort of thing pertaining to music.After ordering and then reading up online,ALOT of people are having problems getting the latency and/or pops skips & jumps out of their sound source.
Some say the problems lie within the Lan card,some say video card.And most importantly,Dell does not have an answer to the problem because they are not trained to understand audio type situations(Unfortunately).So...Here is where we are going to solve this thing(or try really hard because besides that...these are prett good laptops otherwise) Once i get mine in the next 3 days,im going to tell you what i did because i WILL fix it or at least try hard and fail.
