Dell :: Studio 1737Want To Add Bluetooth

Sep 6, 2009

So I got my new Dell 1737 laptop and realized that I did not order it with bluetooth (oops).

The reason I should have gotten bluetooth is that I use a wireless mouse and I seem to keep banging the usb adapter that sticks out the side.

I would like to have a wireless mouse but without the thing sticking out so far. I chatted with Dell and all they would tell me about is the USB bluetooth adapter, he said I shouldn't go inside a new laptop cause I might mess it up (paraphrasing).

On the Dell site, I found a 370 internal card. Would this fit my laptop and how easy is it to install? My husband is familiar with tinkering with the older laptops but I really don't find the prospect of him digging around in my brand new laptop desirable, but I will leave the house for a few hours if that is my only option .

Searching through old posts I saw a 370 card referred to and referenced with a PCI Express slot. Is it possible to get a bluetooth adapter card that fits in that long slot on the left side of the laptop? or is the only option opening the whole thing up?

Dell :: Studio Internal 14z Bluetooth

Jan 8, 2010

Is it possible to add internal bluetooth to the 14z after the fact? If so, what is the part needed to do this? While we're at it, what about wireless N?

Backstory - Ordered my laptop early December, took delivery mid December. I'm thrilled with the product except for the fact that it doesn't have bluetooth. I thought I had chosen that option, but upon looking at my invoice it appears I didn't. I went back through the customize engine on Dell's website and interestingly enough, I don't see anywhere you can choose bluetooth. Searched their parts website with no luck. Searched Google with no luck. So I tried to email Dell customer service. 3 weeks later, they finally told me to email/call tech support. So I called tech support yesterday. They told me that the wireless and bluetooth internal options are integrated onto the motherboard and have to be specified at the time of order. The only solution she could give me was to return the laptop and re-order it. The problem I voiced with that was that there isn't any way to specify bluetooth (or wireless N for that matter) on the customize page on Dell's website. Of course, she said she couldn't help with that and I needed to go back to customer service. Obviously, I was pretty irate (no cussing though! I kept my cool, but made it obvious I was upset) and she gave me a line that CS's lines were down and I needed to call them back in an hour.

So before I call CS, I'd like to try to get some more information. If you guys can help, I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise, I'm about ready to tell them to send a call tag send this thing back simply based on how terrible their after the sale service has been.

Dell :: Installing The Bluetooth 365 In A Studio 14z

Jan 6, 2010

I just ordered a Studio 14z from dell.

- C2D 6600
- 3gb ddr3 Ram
- 320gb 7.2k
- 900p lcd
- backlit keyboard

The only option I missed out on was the internal bluetooth.

So I read the Service Manual for the 14z and it doesn't seem like it would be to much trouble to manually install the 365 module. Also I found the 365 internal module on ebay WITH the mounting screws. It seems like a perfect fit.

Dell :: WWAN And Bluetooth On Studio 1558

May 19, 2010

Just got a 1558 in replacement for a 1525. I popped the back cover to install my upgraded Wifi, and add the WWAN and Bluetooth... No extra mini PCI slots for the BT or WWAN - There is a sticker that says WWAN but no connector or wires.... Since my 1525 has these options ( I did not buy the BT or WWAN card from Dell ) do i ask for another system that has these on-board? Is Dell obligated to provide one that is capable even though in their records i did not have BT or WWAN.

Dell :: Studio XPS Buyers, Do NOT Choose Bluetooth

I was like a lot of people on here, who were considering their options and wanted to buy a Studio XPS 16" laptop. I read about all the horror stories and delays people have been having on here, and just gave in anyways and thought "I hope it won't happen to be".... well it did.

Timeline of events:

Dell :: Studio 14z 1440 Disassembly And Bluetooth

Jan 9, 2010

I thought I'd post this in a new thread instead of replying to my other one since the disassembly pictures could be helpful to people.

Right off, in my other thread I mentioned that Dell told me there were 2 rev's of motherboards (one if you order through the Home portal and a different one if you order through the Small Biz portal), and that the Home rev doesn't support Bluetooth (or WWAN, which is why these things didn't show up for me as options when ordering the laptop). So this morning I took the thing apart to see for myself.

Conclusion - From what I can tell, it appears that any 14z has a full size mini-PCI slot (for WWAN), a half-height mini-PCI slot (for wireless networking), and the mini plug necessary to install the Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth mini-card. Dell support is a bunch of morons.

Steps to disassemble:

1) Remove battery. Here is what the computer looks like with the batter removed.

2) Remove keyboard trim ring. This is totally held in by plastic snaps (yuk...I seem to have an easy time breaking these if not careful). If you flip the laptop upside down and look under where the battery goes, you can see a could of little tabs that show through. You can use a small flathead screwdriver to pop these loose from the backside.

Then flip the laptop keyboard up and carefully work your way around the rest of the trim ring until you have it totally loose.

Dell :: Webcam, Bluetooth, And Overheating Issues With Studio XPS 1645

Jan 17, 2010

So my studioxps 1640 was replaced with a 1645. I was glad I got an i7 and a 1GB video card upgrade due to many other issues with the 1640, but I'm having a terrible time with the 1645.

First off, when I first used the 1645 for 15 minutes, the fan turned on full blast. I was just using firefox, so I ignored it and thought the laptop was just getting broken-in. But the heat issue appeared regularly. If I don't turn off the laptop, the whole laptop shuts down to either a bluescreen or it just powers off. Sometimes a weird clicking/crackling noise will come from the fan area near the heatsink even when the fan isn't on! It's like a bunch of metal balls are falling down a pipe.

I've left the bottom cover open to check if the heat sink was dissipating heat, but for some reason the metal area on top of the i7 was burning hot but the copper "pipes" were actually cool/cold. I'm getting a heat sink and fan replacement and I'll let you know how that works.

Next issue: webcam. On the 1640, running the webcam at 640x480 produced no lag and smooth pictures, but the 1645 constantly jitters at 640x480. Is this is a common issue?

Lastly, the bluetooth card is giving me a terrible time. I have used windows 7 x64 on the 1640 and bluetooth gave me no problems, but on the 1645 it is horrendous. I've switched bluetooth cards between the laptops so it's not a hardware issue. However, I'm trying to connect a bluetooth mouse and the card will detect a mouse, but it will never connect to it. I've tried numerous other techniques I saw on other threads. I ran the driver utility in compatibility mode, I've installed windows mobile device center, I've even formatted the hard drive. any help?

Dell Studio 1558 :: How To Check / Fault Find Built-in Bluetooth

Aug 27, 2010

Not sure how to check / fault find the built-in Bluetooth on my Studio 1558. I installed a Logitech Bluetooth mouse on it about two months ago, and mostly it works well. But this afternoon there is suddenly no response to the mouse. (It worked this morning.) It seems that the laptop's Bluetooth has disconnected for some reason - doing a Bluetooth search with my cellphone picks up the mouse but not the laptop. I've put new batteries in the mouse, made sure it's switched on, clicked it's Connect switch. I also rebooted the computer. I've tried the F2 comms on/off function key. None of this worked. The built-in broadband comms is working fine.

Dell Studio 1558 :: Install Of Windows 8.1 Does Not Show Bluetooth But It Works

Jan 13, 2015

I have a Studio 1558 laptop, originally with Windows 7 which I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro.  I have just installed a larger HD (1TB) to replace the 500GB which I thought might have been on its way out as it occasionally started clicking.  I have also taken the opportunity for a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro.  But the Device Manager does not show any Bluetooth devices even though the Bluetooth mouse works!  However I cannot find any links in Devices & Printers to allow me to change the mouse wheel action or the Synaptics touch pad action.

Going back to the 500GB HD gives me all this functionality so the hardware is all ok.  The BIOS settings still have Bluetooth enabled.  I have updated Windows updates, and used Slimdrivers to update all the drivers.

Acer :: 1810T: How Do I Disable Power Management On Bluetooth; Keep Bluetooth Fully Powered

Feb 8, 2010

My Bluetooth keyboard goes to sleep after a period of idle and it takes 15 seconds for the Acer Aspire 1810T to wake up and notice the Bluetooth keypresses.

However, I found out my Bluetooth keyboard works reliably when I have a second Bluetooth device connected and active at the time (such as either a headset or bluetooth tethering to a cellphone as modem), the computer doesn't have a 15 second lag in noticing the Bluetooth keyboard again - the keyboard works almost right away even after being unused for sometime.

So that means the culprit is in the power management on the Acer Bluetooth module. Is there a way to force the Bluetooth module to never go to sleep? Any checkbox somewhere, a register setting? Even going as far to purchase a different Bluetooth driver? Or any other option? Sometimes the sleep is useful, but it definitely isn't useful with the Bluetooth keyboard. This problem does not happen if I use an external Bluetooth dongle.

(With BatteryBar Pro, I notice that power consumption falls suddenly whenever the Bluetooth module goes to sleep when the keyboard goes idle for more than 30 seconds, and at this point, it has difficulty 'waking up' when I start typing on the Bluetooth keyboard. But the problem also still happens when the laptop is plugged in!)

Acer :: How To Enable Bluetooth On D150 Without External Bluetooth Button Under LED

Aug 12, 2009

I have finally tested the Acer Empowering Technology software on my Acer D150.

Great news, the software works to enable/disable the Bluetooth module on the netbook without physically pressing the button. This is great for people like me that do not have the button on top to push the button inside. There are two software needed for people to get this running on the D150. First is the required “Acer Empowering Framework” software and the second is the “Acer ePower Management.” Once both software are installed on the system, the setting to enable/disable the Bluetooth module is in the ePower Management.

Power profiles within windows will probably be reset to default, so those would have to be readjusted if a user changed them. I am actually running Windows Vista on my Acer D150 with the Acer Empowering Technology software for Vista. I am not 100% sure if the software will also work on XP, but from the notebookreview forums, I believe it should work just as fine (but more options on other Empowering Technology software).

(in XP, the driver also works, but need XP edition, not vista editon).

Dell :: Bluetooth 365/370 Modules Failing-multiple Platform,multiple Bluetooth Versions

Apr 17, 2010

I have need to use Bluetooth stereo audio functionality (A2DP profile) almost exclusively when I use my laptop.

I had owned a M1330 with the Dell 355 Bluetooth Module for several years without issue. Last November, I decided to upgrade and purchased an M15x (laptop #1) with the Dell 370 Bluetooth module included, running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Not more than one day out of the box,the 370 module failed while watching a movie. It literally disappeared from device manager and no uninstalling/reinstallation of drivers alleviated the situation. The only way to get the radio to be recognized by the operating system was, and is, to shutdown, reboot into bios, disable the card in bios, reboot into windows, restart, boot into bios, enable the card and then reboot into Windows. The card would then work for awhile but eventually fail again. The module works for short periods of time but if put under an extended load, fails. That and other issues with the M15x caused me to return it.

Contacted Dell and returned the M15x and bought and built a Studio XPS 1645 (laptop #2) to replace it. Received the unit and literally within the 1st few hours, the 370 module failed exactly like the M15x.I thought o.k. a bad card and had tech support send out a new module for the XPS 1645. Received and installed it and the exact same problem happened. Failed when under an extended load. Again called tech support and was then dispatched an onsite tech to replace the entire motherboard and card. No resolution-card failed again. Spoke with a resolution specialist and returned it and again purchased a M15x (laptop #3-really liked the M15x over the XPS 1645)

Received the M15x-Bluetooth failure again. At this point, was considering dropping Dell altogether but thought I'd try the Studio 1558 (laptop #4) with the Bluetooth 365 module, in order to rule out the 370 card, first. Ordered and was delivered on the 5th of April, same exact issue-failure of card under a load. I am returning this defective Studio 1558 and again getting a M15x (laptop #5). I realize that the M15x Bluetooth card will fail again-in fact,am 100% sure it will fail, but have bought a Sony Bluetooth transmitter as a workaround.

What appears to be happening is that the card will shutdown when it gets warm. This is either a Broadcom manufacturing defect or a Dell engineering issue. I know now through personal experience that there is a serious issue with Dell Bluetooth cards.

If this was happening with only one laptop, I'd be ok with it but, this is occuring across multiple laptop platforms, with both Broadcom Bluetooth cards that Dell brands and sells.

This is either an oversight by engineering-maybe they didn't test the card under a heavy load, or Dell is knowingly selling defective equipment.
