even though this computer is hot to the touch and she is having a few issues with it i figure id put it threw its paces for you guys. id just like to mention before hand that we have the WLED screen (1366x768)
out of the box running with dell's 9.4 drivers it ran a 5060 in 3dmark 06
i ended up having to down grade the drivers to dell's 9.2 because i was unable to over clock with the 9.4's. however even with the 9.2 the only program that would work is AMD GPU clock tool. i was able to test it up to 749 mhz core / 945 mhz mem. it works like a charm, no artifacting or anything. with just one run threw 3dmark 06 it brought the temp up to 76C. after an 45min of looping the test the temps peaked and leveled out at 83C.
it idles around 60-63C at these clocks (stock idle is about 8C cooler)
i have yet to test if its stable at higher clock then these. i feel as though it still has a small amount of room left, maybe another 20 mhz on ether . i haven't had time to test this out yet though. im probably going to try undervolting the CPU and see if that brings down the temps any. ill report back with the results from both the CPU and GPU when i get a chance to do it all.
this is a spiffy little computer, im sure that once we resolve the screen and power supply issues with dell that my wife will be happy with the unit.
just wondering how you guys get on with modern games with the ati gpu as i may have to get one of these machines and any performance indicators would be nice to see
I decided to make this thread because there are so many of us out there who have all had the same problems and have gone through he** and back with Dell customer/tech support and are wanting to get a replacement and/or already have. Our posts are scattered everywhere so I just thought we should all unify them and post here to help others who are in our situation.
State what you currently have or previously owned, ( ie the bad laptop), specs etc. and what the problems are/were. Then if you have already gotten a replacement, only the relevant specs (the ones that changed or upgrades you got) and any additional notes you want to add about the process, how long it took etc.
If anyone is on the fence about what to do with their situation please feel free to ask. This should be an informative and helpful thread for those looking into getting there laptop replaced or fixed by Dell, or just want some advice on what to do with their problematic 1640/45/47. This is by no means a thread to gloat or brag about your replacement upgrade, but rather a place for everyone to share their experiences and help others. Thanks!
Problem Laptop: Studio XPS 1640 - throttling, heat, speaker rattle/distortion, dust behind screen
So, this thread is for all the SXPS 1640 owner's to post when they ordered, status updates only, and when received etc.....Basically this is a thread is for Order Status (and all included w/in the thread title)
Please use this format, it's nice and easy for all to read: Ordered On: 2/4/09
Order Status: In Production 'Building Stage' 2/5-2/709 (12pm EST) Order Status: In Production 'Boxing Stage' 2/7/09 (12pm EST)-2/10/09 (11am EST) Order Status: Shipped 2/10/09 (8 am EST) .....
I thought it was time to get an *Order Status* thread started on the Studio XPS 1340, since so many are ordering it!

Because the Studio XPS 1645 Intel Core i7 Owner's thread was getting pretty *thick* with *Order Status* Inquiries, etc... I thought it was time to get an *Order Status* thread started, since so many are ordering it! And, to lessen the *heavyness* felt with the Owner's thread.
Also, we really should keep Status Updates, Order Delays, Progress as such, separated in this section of the forum! It will make the other thread "easier on the eye" per se!

Do not post in this thread until you ACTUALLY take deliver of XPS 1645 I7. Since the other thread has been destroyed by the production fiasco, we will reserve this thread for reviews, questions, etc about the ACTUAL machine...

Dear Friends can u give me your valuable suggestions , is this good system or worth for money? I'd like to do some gaming, definitely video editing/production and watch movies.
Also... typical office apps, and photo manipulation, program compilation, dot net program development . I like to keep my hardware for five years, buying the best available architecture, but not necessarily the top of the line in performance.
I have a 8600gt with the 176.44 driver and I got 4802 marks in 3dmark06. I was wondering if that was better than the other drivers such as 175.97. (I was using the Zalman NC-1000 laptop cooler while running 3dmark06)
If you own an Intel X-25M SSD, please post your benchmark score(s). I am having an issue with my 4K read/write. It seems as tho they are 50% less than what they should be. Nevertheless, post your benchmarks. I want to know if any other DELL owners experiencing the same problem as i do..
I would have posted this in the Hardware SSD Thread, but that thread is just out of control. I am mostly interested in the Random 4K reads/writes and this is probably the most important attribute in everyday computing for regular users like us.
X-25M G2
X-25M G2
on a side note, can someone tell me why my 4K reads/writes are so much slower than what they are supposed to be?
i have a m1730 with 2.4 t7700, 8700m GT 256mb sli, 4gb rams, 200gb 7200 rpm raid 0. i used riva tuner and overclocked video card and memory to 750, 1500, 975 and got a score on 3dmarks06 of 93xx-94xx.
is there any way i can reach 10000? or is this pretty much maxed out?
I have been trying to research what kind of "upgrade" the GPU actually received by getting a Geforce 330M 512MB card (in the 17 inch), compared to the 9600M GT.
Anyone got a good site that allows direct comparison of stats? Everyone that I have looked at has the 330M pegged as a 1GB VRAM card... which is not the case this time around.
I'd also like to see how the 330M would compare to my current 8800M GTX card in my sager (although I know its not even close).
yesterday i got my precision m6300 notebook from dell. so far i benchmarked it with 3dmark06 and took a short look at it. i payed 1483 euro and the laptop came with the following options: ...
how to interpret these benchmarks. what they mean...why do the first and second benchmark graphs differ so much? hp pavilion g60-120us amd dual core 2ghz, 3gb ram, 250gb hd, geforce 8200m vista home premium. running firefox with multiple tabs open, majic jack-internet phone, virus and spyware.
What's a good program for OSX to benchmark a SSD? Also, does anyone know if there's a similar program like Intel Matrix Storage Manager that will let me view all of a SSD drive properties (make/model/firmware/etc.) in OSX?
Unable to run bootcamp, or any xp/vista/7 on my friend's computer.
what tools can we use for benchmarking Apple/mac systems?
So far OpenMark is pretty much dead. I use XBench at the moment, but the result presentation is very much in text mode. Would be nice if we have something like Passmark Performance test tool of Windows.
benchmarking, I know about the vista experience scoring stuff so I was pleased to see that its a type of benchmark. 5.5 out of 5.9 ain't bad, huh (i wasn't expecting a number like that)?
THE PERFORMANCES OF ASPIRE 6935G Model : 1366x768, CPU Centrino2 P8600 2.4GHz, nVidia 9600MGT 512Mo, DDR3 RAM 2GB, HDD 320GB, Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bits:
PERFORMANCES OF 9600M GT
GPU-Z:
3D MARK 06 Score at native resolution 1366x768 is 5690
3D MARK 06 Score at resolution 1024x768 is 6390
Cinebench 10 score is 5472.
I'm not so much into gaming, but I like games like Left 4 Dead and I was able to play it with this 9600M GT with nice graphics and anti-aliasing (2x).
NEW 12-01-2009 COD 5 Bench I've made a bench of COD5 and that was quite good. I've let all the default settings but use native resolution (1366x768) Vertical Sync and AA2x. I've used FRAPS to get the frame rate and the average was around 30-35fps, the lower rates was about 18fps during multiple explosions close to 4 tanks. We still can get more fps by lowering the resolution to 1280x720, but I wanted to test with the native resolution................
One of the things that truly bugged me about this laptop was that it only shipped with 533MHz RAM (PC2-4200) when the hardware supported 667MHz (PC2-5300). When I started looking to upgrade I was bugged again that the 667MHz memory I was finding had a CAS Latency of 5 where the 533MHz ran at CL4. Then I finally located some 667MHz CL4 memory and decided to pull the trigger.
I am happy with the purchase and would recommend the upgrade to anyone with this laptop. I can't say if I used the best memory benchmarking program, but at the very least I can publish my results using SiSoftware Sandra Lite: 1) Memory Bandwidth test (HIGHER is better) 2) Memory Latency test (LOWER is better for both) 3) Cache & Memory test (HIGHER is better for Combined, LOWER is better for Speed factor)

I'm not looking to debate the geforce vs quadro performance nor do I want people to tell me to wait for the 9m series cards, just a couple quick questions.
Does the m1730 have a docking port? From what I can find, I'm thinking it does not. For that matter, does the m6300 have one? I think it does...
Can an 8800gtx from an m1730 be put into an m6300? If not, I'll be fine with the 3600m, but I prefer geforce cards.
If yes, where can you get an 8800gtx and how much do they cost? I've seen people saying anything from over $2000 to $700.... which is quite a difference.
I guess while I'm at it, are there any other huge issues that I've maybe overlooked? I'm thinking about things like the huge LCD problems that everyone experienced with light leakage and whatnot on the m170/9300 series and even overflowing into the next gen stuff iirc.
