Dell :: Studio XPS 16 Owners: Is Your Notebook Really Portable?
May 18, 2009
I currently have a Sony Vaio Z540 -- 13.3" non-glossy display at 1366x768 and a weight of around 3.4 lbs.
Easily carried, that thing.
I, however, wouldn't mind a 15.4" / 16" notebook. For those of you with XPS 16 machines: is your laptop really that portable? The thing weighs 6.4 lbs with the standard battery, from what I understand. Think universities and the usual study places as well as at home.

How are these working with your Studio XPS 13/16 notebooks?
My wife has a 13 and I have a 16, and we're needing to pick up a couple coolers for game sessions.
To be blunt, I find myself doubting that they could provide a truly outstanding performance on the XPS due to the vent placement on the cooler in relation to the intakes on the XPS.
In fact, when I look at a top-down view of the coolers and the bottom of our laptops, the vents really only get about 10% coverage.
Does anyone have any other coolers they are running that better then the zalmans? If they're the best then I'll grab a 1000 for the wifey and a 2000 for myself.

I'm about to pull the trigger on either the 13 or the 16. It's really come down to how well the above to games run for you (those are the two that have me hooked at the moment, so i'll be familiar with how I'm used to it performing compared to your settings).
I'm currently on an Asus G2S-A1 thats overheating like crazy. Time to upgrade. It's specs: 2.2Ghz core 2, 4gb ram, 5400rpm hdd, 8600m-gt 256.
Will the XPS13 with a 2.66ghz, 4gb ram, 7200rpm hdd, and the N10-M 512mb gpu perform equal or better then what I'm currently on? I ask because I'm having trouble finding a comparable benchmark.
This wont be my primary gaming rig, it will be portable entertainment. BUT it does need to be able to run on par with what i have or better to entertain me Should I be happy with the 13 or do you think the 16 would be better. The only reason I'd go with teh 16 is for the Radeon 4670 1gb if the 13 has problems with wow and L4D.
If you play WoW or L4D on the 13 (or even the 16) I would GREATLY appreciate the peace of mind i would get from hearing back what your FPS are and what detail/quality settings you're getting them at.

did you have any problems with the laptop when you first got it?
i figured it would be a good idea to do a survey and see what would be the ratio between defective laptops vs non defective ones.

It was expected to ship on thr 10th and I actually received it today. Dell is the best. But anyways, here are just a few questions to you current owners:
1.) How can I adjust my RGB settings to perfection and what settings would you recommend (Please don't post a thread of a 10 pages that I will have to read through).
2.) I purchased the 9 cell. Do I want to fully charge it, then let it die all the way down so the sensor is correct or what would you recommend?...........................

I have a Studio XPS 13 (aka. 1340) but Im sure this would probably be relevant for Studio XPS 16 owners as well. On the front of the system, you will notice an IR receiver which is meant to go with the Dell IR remote (which I didnt order). In the device manager, it appears as a generic Infrared HID device.
I am just wondering if anyone has been able to successfully get their Studio XPS working with an IR remote? Maybe with a Windows Media Center remote control, or perhaps get it to recognize/learn from a typical remote control you might have laying around?

I just got my system the other day and I didn't get it with the blu-ray drive. It seems it wasn't even on the configuration menu when I ordered my system.
Can anyone check our their device manager and tell me the blu-ray drive you currently have? I'd like to buy one and install it myself (Don't worry I'm pretty tech savvy).

My girlfriend owns a new XPS 16 and she's worried about getting scratches on it + dirt in the grills.
Has anyone come up with a good protective solution that isn't complicated to apply?

Im in the process of updating all the drivers on my system, and of course the first place im checking is the Dell Support website.
Now, according to the support website, the only optical driver is for the Hitachi GA10N, however my system is equipped with a TSSTcorp TS-T633A.

Dell offered to replace my XPS m1330 that I got from the outlet because I've already had 2 screens replaced(got laptop 3 monts ago). Should I keep it or exchange it for the SXPS 13?
I'm concerned about the overly blown up heat issues. Is the heat that bad with just the 9400m or is it only for the 9500m.
What other issues should I be concerned about the SXPS 13?
What is the average battery life(balanced, 50% brightness, browsing, youTube videos .....

Whenever i connect my samsung 1TB portable Hard drive on a Dell xps 15inch laptop running windows 8 pro, it completely freezes the whole system. i can move the mouse but i cant click anything or go to task manager using ctrl alt del.
These are the things i have tried:
tried different cables
tried different usb ports
Removed usb drivers
Checked event logs (the laptop crashes when i launch the event logs)
Ran CCleaner cleaning registry
All the above did not work. I even tried to roll back to a previous restore point and that did not work either.I tested the hard drive on my brother in law's laptop and it worked fine. it is a acer laptop running fresh copy of windows 7.Is this a windows 7 error? do i have a virus maybe?(i am going to do a full system scan soon)What other things can i try?

I will be traveling abroad for a couple of months and I will be listening to music obviously. I would like to find a good set of speakers that I could attach to my MPB.
Initially I was looking for an iPod dock/alarm clock, that would also have an audio in that I could attach my MPB to and have that work but I don't think they make those. So I would like to find some good speakers instead.

I have a 250GB WD portable hard drive. I would like to encrypt all the data on it or password protect the hard drive. It is suppose to come with the software for this but I can't find anything on it that works with my mac. All the utilities and tools that came on it appear to be for windows. Does anyone know if I can get OSX compatible software for this or if there is an easy download that will do this for me?

I've a Vaio TT that I'm (or was) fairly happy with, and before that I had the TX and the TZ.
I would however like to replace the TT since the Blu-ray has stopped working for the second time and I just refuse to pay an insane amount of $ to have it fixed. The question is, - Replace it with what?
I want an ultra-portable, i.e. 12" or smaller screen, weight less than 3 lbs, and it must have Blu-ray and SSD. Where can I find one

Also, I'd like to know if there is one that also have blue ray.

Anything better than this, or should I just take the plunge?

I just need it for SD cards and Sony Memory Sticks and whatever else. More slots would be nice but I'd like it to be pretty portable.

I know a few of you have 8800GTX SLI setups right now. What kind of temps do those cards hit under a heavy load such as Crysis? Are any of you overclocking them yet? How many fans does the M1730 have, and how loud are they on high speed?

The LCD is bright and clear when viewed head-on, but the slightest change in vertical angle causes the brightness and colors to vary like mad, making the system unbearable to use on my lap.
I tried to figure out who made this particular LCD, but the intel graphics driver makes it hard to get the EDID info.
The only thing that sort of worked was MonInfo:
http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm
And that only worked by getting the raw data string from the EDID structure, which indicates the LCD is part number "NU412.
