Dell :: Studio XPS 16 Resolution
Mar 30, 2009
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question. Traditionally,(well at least for me anyway) laptop/montior screen resolutions are represented by two numbers. E.g. 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050 etc. But on the XPS 16, it's available in 720p and 1080p? What exactly are their resolutions? 1280x720 and 1920x1080(assuming they come in 16:9 aspect ratio?)
If so,
Q1) On a 16inch display, wouldn't one want more 'space' than 1280x720 gives? For me personally, the resolution should at least be 1440x900 but better be at 1680x1050.
Q2) On a 16inch display, can one REALLY tell the difference between 720p and 1080p?

I'm planning on buying a Dell Studio 15 and upgrade the standard 1280x800 screen to a 1920x1200 one(for games, videos etc).
My concern is, with this display setting, should I find the icons/texts etc be too small for everyday general use, what other resolutions setting are there to choose from?(the 1920 screen) Would 1440x900 be available or does it go straight down to 1280x800? Can any Dell owners confirm this please?
Likewise, if I upgrade the display to 1440x900, I assume 1280x800 will be available as well?

Just wanted to clarify the resolution, since I can't seem to find a reliable source for answers..
Some people claim that the Studio 14z 720p has a resolution of 1366x768, while others claim that it's 1280x800.

I can't get Vista Business x64 to recognize the graphics driver. Both Catalyst and XtremeG install fine,
but when I reboot the highest resolution I have is 1400x1050 and Windows only displays 'Standard VGA graphics adapter' in device manager.
Is this a common problem or do I need to do something else? I know the XPS m1330 had a quirk where you needed to install the SATA driver before installing windows which had me baffled for hours...

I want to buy a new notebook and noticed that the Dell Studio XPS 13 has only a resolution up to 1280x800.
Sony (and other competitor) have on 13.x" resolution up to 1600x900.
1280x800 is a nono for me. Anyone knows if Dell plans higher resolution on theire 13,3" Notebooks?

But I'm encountering a big problem, my display is weird (there is some green filter added) in addition Windows 8 does not completely (it stop after the blue logo).
I can see something if I boot on my Ubuntu USB. Even the boot logo have the green filter.
On the others side if I come back to the original disciple screen, all is well. So, at a first sight I think it is not a connector problem or a graphics card problem.
It's a Dell Studio 1555 with a ATI Mobility Radeon 4500....

had a Dell 1735..screen resolution was perfect and webpages i visited looked nice and sharp etc...purchased a new Dell studio 1737 laptop and it seems that the default setting is 1920 x 1200..this makes everything very sharp but to small to work with...the correct setting for the correct size etc...seems to be 1440 x 900..but when i change the settings to this size everything is the correct size but not as sharp...and websites i visit such as Facebook etc..the text on these pages seems different..now, when I place my old Dell studio 1735 beside my new Dell studio 1737 my old laptop which is set at 1440 x 900..my old laptop looks far sharper and superior to my new laptop! My old 1735 has the highest setting for resolution at 1440 x 900 while the new 1737 seems to have a higher setting option of 1920 x 1200. Is there a big difference between the 1735 and 1737? Am I stuck with just keeping my setting on my new 1737 at 1440 x 900 and putting up with the blurriness etc? Have tried everything from going into Catalyst center to adjusting settings in appearance in vista etc..

My TV's native resolution is 1366 x 768. My VAIO FW-190 has Intel Chipset and both the Windows built in software and Intel provided graphic card settings software do not show the 1366x768 resolution. I can't find a way to set the Vaio's HDMI output to that resolution.

I am afraid that if i go with the 900p, the text will be too small for me. Please let me know what you think I should get. PLEASE POST PICTURES OF BOTH 720P AND 900P IF YOU HAVE ANY

When using an external monitor such as a large screen LCT HD TV, what is the maximum output resolution you can get and is it via HDMI or VGA?
According to Dell online tech support VGA is a low res output and HDMI is preferred.

I just got my new Studio XPS 1640 in the mail today and got a little excited. I started tweaking stuff galore, following the variety of vista tweaking thread for reducing boot time, speeding up your comp etc... but I think I must have screwed something up because the computer started lagging like crazy. i couldn't even navigate in "My Computer"
So me, being all excited and dumb decided that I would reinstall Vista and partition my C drive (which is a 256gb SSD btw, if that's important), instead of learning about the Factory Image Restore.
So now my screen resolution sucks, and I'm frustrated and tired of trying to fix this. I just want it back to how it was before, fresh out of the box. I have the Vista CD and The Driver CD, and I tried installing every damned driver and application and whatever, but it's never the same as it came out of the box.
I can't find the webcam or facial recognition software anywhere and I'm missing the cool dock at the top and bleh. I'll stop ranting, but if anyone. ANYONE, knows how to help me I would greatly appreciate it. I just want the good laptop that I paid 2000$ for.

having trouble with my second monitor that I am trying to connect.
I am using a DVI to HDMI cable and inputting it into the second screen (It is an lcd tv).
Windows 7 allows me to change the resolution of both monitors seperately. i made my regular monitor the same 1920 x 1200, but no matter what resolution i make the second screen, the edges, top bottom left and right are all cut off, sort of like a cropped version of what i should be seeing .....

I'm weighing my options for multi-screen setup for my new E6400. The two obvious set-ups are:
1. Laptop screen + monitor through VGA or DisplayPort. Less $
2. Dock + 2 monitors through VGA & DVI, or DVI & DisplayPort or DVI & DVI (depending on dock) more $$$
Is there a possible way of setting up two-monitors through the laptop without a dock by going through the VGA & DisplayPort that are already there?
What is the maximum output resolution on the VGA port

I have considered purchasing a Dell latitude D630. I've looked at online retailers such as liquidation.com, ascendtech.us, ebay, amazon...but so far can't find a D630 at the resolution of 1440x900, only at a lower resolution of 1280x800.
So, looks like the only option is to buy a screen sold individually, and upgrade the laptop manually to replace it.
The question is, is it safe to replace a lower-resolution screen with a better one on a laptop?

is there any way i can change to a one in between or something.

I intend to buy this laptop, but I'm having some problems with the specs they mention and with the resonses from their tech support.
My problem is the resolution, which they list as 1400x900 and their tech support said it is 1400x900.
I highly suspect they just looked over their own product page and made the answer up, because I can't find any dell panel with this kind of resolution. Also, the 1400x900 doesn't match up with any of the standard wide-screen resolutions: 16:10, 16:9 or even 4:3

I have a Latitude D530 company computer. Unfortunately, it only supports 1024 x 768 screen resolution for the unit's display.
The graphics chipset is the Mobile Intel 965 Express family.
My question is this: If I was to get an external larger resolution display - say a display with 1680 x 1050 resolution - can the graphics chipset support this higher resolution and different screen ratio

I just bought a Latitude E6500 with a WUXGA LCD with Nvidia NVS 160M to replace my old Inspiron 8600 also with WUXGA screen.
I am puzzled with one thing : with my old 8600 I was able to change resolution from 1920X1200 way back to 800X600 without any loss of quality. The screen always ramained crisp and clear.
Now, with my new E6500, anything less than 1920 X 1200 gets fuzzy. I read all about the "native resolution" speach, but what I can't understand is why the old laptop was able to show all resolutions properly, and the new on doesn't.

I have used the search, and this is the same issue as many others have described, and only provided an answer for Nvidia drivers.
I have an e1505 with XP pro installed. The video cardis ati mobility x1400. I have all but the trackpad drivers installed. Quickset is installed as well. The problem is when I close the lid of the laptop. The screen seems to resize and keep the icons at a lower resolution position. If I restart the computer, the icons loose the position and go into a standard grid on the left side of the screen. I can manually restart explorer through task manager. If I do this before i restart, the icons go back to a normal, non changed position. After restart, there is no change.
This issue only started after I plugged in an external monitor for the first time.
I have turned off quickset, and reinstalled the ATI drivers.

I decided to try playing some 720p video on my Sanyo 42" LCD HDTV (native res 1366x768). I assumed it would be as easy as just connecting an HDMI cable and setting my m1530 to clone desktop.. I couldn't have been more wrong.
After doing some research it appears that LCD HDTVs aren't as flexible as regular LCD monitors with respect to HDMI input. No matter what I do, the screen always appears cropped around the edges on my TV.
What I've tried so far:
1) Setting a custom 1366x768 resolution in the nVidia control panel.
2) Tried setting my hdtv as primary monitor and setting the res.
3) Used Powerstrip (program) in an attempt to force a 1366x768 res (not sure if I'm doing this entirely correctly, I'm a little confused over what the correct advanced timings should be).
4) I hear this issue is called "overscan", so I looked through my TV menu for any overscan or zoom/image scaling options but couldn't find any.
I'm using the 179.28 Nvidia driver.
I'm running out of things to try, does anyone know how to make this thing work?

When I first received my M4400, it was pretty choppy and sluggish, even on the desktop for things like opening start, and clicking on the dropdown menus! But when I went into the Nvidia control panel and changed the resolution from 1900x1200 to 1200x800, it started performing smoothly.
