Dell :: Bluray Drive In Sxps 1640
Apr 10, 2009I am probably getting the sxps 1640 and I was wondering would a bluray drive be worth it? I do have a Sony 40v4100 lcd tv. Can this drive output 24p through the hdmi port? And why isnt it a bluray burner like the xps m1530 line? How hard would it be to swap in a bluray drive, do you have to pull the whole computer apart to do so? Should I just spend the money on an external bluray player for my tv?

Mar 9, 2009I bought an HDX16t on Saturday and got the default DVD drive w/out blu-ray support because the blu-ray was $50 more and I don't think I'd use it that much. With that said, I'd definitely like to have a blu-ray drive if it was free. So this morning I looked and the upgrade is now free.
It's probably unlikely, but would HP allow me to add the blu-ray drive to my order? Has anyone had success getting HP to do something like this? I placed the order on the 7th and it's estimated to be built by the 16th.

Jan 15, 2010Do not upgrade... the upgrade killed my motherboard, I dont know what happened. I as installing it fine then it was totally unresponsive and would not shut off. I then had to take away the power supply and now Dell is coming to replace my motherboard.

Apr 24, 2009These are the "Rear Caps" on the Dell XPS1640:
Take a close look at the two pictures below. Showing two XPS1640's and their "Rear Cap" (ventilation). They are different. I drew a green line in approximately the same location. "v2" definitely has more ventilation slots towards the bottom. Looks like Dell has an upgrade policy going on regarding the early 1640's:

Apr 4, 2010So I tried updating my BIOS to version A14, the current one on Dell's site. Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64, btw. It seemed to update fine, but when it restarted, I got a black screen.
I waited about 20 minutes, powered off, then back on. It booted into Windows, now however my keyboard does not work. Most keys do not work, and the ones that do produce incorrect characters.
Also, whenever I restart Windows, it does not reboot. It will hang at a black screen until I power off and back on. Currently typing this on a USB keyboard.
When I go into setup, it does say version A14, so I'm assuming it went through, but for some reason is not compatible with my system. Can I downgrade to fix this, and if so, where can I find an older BIOS version?
Dell :: XPS 1640 W/4670...is It Worth The Upgrade?
Jul 28, 2009I currently have an ASUS G50V-A2 and am looking to sell it to get a new Dell XPS 1640 with the new graphics chipset.
I have only had the ASUS since last October, but I am always wanting a new laptop every 6 - 12 months and this Dell has caught my eye.
Looking at the specs they are similiar, but the Dell does have a few upgrades to what I have:
2.66GHz processor (Asus - 2.53)
Vista Upgrade to Windows 7 (Asus - no upgrade)
1920x1080 (Asus - 1680x1050)
ATI 4760 (Asus - Geforce 9700GT) .....

i bought it with a 64bit vista OS, the problem is i cant install a cad software because its for 32bit..can i install my laptop with a 32 bit OS? would it be no problem regarding my drivers?

Jan 15, 2009Suppose I purchase one today at full retail price. Then, in say a week, there's a 20% (or whatever) coupon that comes out, or they go on sale.
Can I call Dell and ask for the difference? I know they have a 21 (or whatever) day return policy, so I would imagine the sale or coupon would have to come within that time frame.
Another question: Does the return policy time begin when I order or when it ships or when I receive it? .

Jan 31, 2010Just had my connection upgraded to 50Mb & when i connect my xps to it wirelessly i can only reach speeds of 20Mb.
I have a usb Wireless N external addaptor which gets me speeds of between 35 and 42Mb but its massive and quite unsightly.
Is it possible for me to install a wireless N adaptor to replace the one in this laptop or would i have to get a smart card slot deal?

Jun 22, 2009Just got my new laptop 1/2 a week ago and installed a clean 7 on it. My idle temperatures are as follows:
Processor (T9800): ~43 degrees
ATI: ~48 degrees
HDD (500 GB 7200 RPM): ~40 degrees
Motherboard: ~44-50 degrees
This is at idle! When I game for a while, all temperatures hover at ~60 degrees. Is this normal?
My old laptop with a T5750 idles at 19 degrees for the processor, does the T9800 produce this much extra heat?
Also, if other 1640 users can post their specs and temperatures it'd be great.
Dell :: With Studio XPS 1640 Drivers
Dec 9, 2009After installing some core drivers, I still could not see the Dell symbol and the Studio XPS 1640 series in My Compyter/ Properties.
Moreover, the eject button of my DVD slotload doesn't know anymore, even if I have check I downloaded the lastest driver of it. (but I can eject by right click in the DVD driver in My Computer and my laptop still reads CD/DVD as usual)
In addition, after install ATI 3670 drivers, I do not see the ajustment for my graphic card anymore.
Any one knows which drivers and software I should install to get my Dell as a new Factory Image Dell Studio XPS 1640 with Windows 7 64 bit, please let me know.

Feb 27, 2010My studio XPS 1640 doesn't turn on. I can only see four touch buttons lit and everything else is off.
The only way to turn them off is by removing the battery and the moment I put it back they turn back on.
Using the AC adapter is the same, they remain on until I disconnect them. I attach a picture to show what I mean.

Not so fond of Vista. Like that is news. Anyhow I just want to know if any xps 1640 owner has achieved an install of Win 7 and managed to get all the various dell additions to work, ie dell camera facial recog, pinch touch pad, fual monitor etc.

Mar 8, 2009A Dell Studio 1737 OR the Dell Studio XPS 1640? The Studio 1737 has been out longer for any problems to be fixed and whatnot and comes at a lower price. The Studio XPS 1640 has been out for just a couple of months and there are dozens of reports of BSOD's, heating issues, etc...
I would like to get the Studio XPS 1640, but generally I wait about 4-6 months after the product has been released before buying. There are talks about a built-in TV Tuner, but I haven't seen that on the Dell website. People are also saying Dell is going to upgrade the video card .....

I have a dell desktop both the notebook and the desktop are running the same version of windows vista and the drivers for the USB Digital Microscope installed on the desktop. So my question is how do I get the USB Digital Microscope working on my STUDIO XPS 1640 notebook? I really need to get the USB Digital Microscope to work on the notebook. The reason I bought the notebook was to keep the my kid off my desktop!

Apr 14, 2009I bought my 1640 refurbished and it had eveything I wanted except for Blue Ray. So to rectify this I went on a search for a Blue Ray that would fit - Dell wanted $389 for a refurb-
I found a a tear down picture and zoomed in to get the part number BC-5600S. I confirmed this with the service manual.
I found one on Ebay for $130 so I ordered it. Some of the other players out there have an eject button - the BC-5600S does not have a eject button.
Has any one done this upgrade and could offer some tips or advise?
Or am I going to be the guy that needs to do that for you?
Dell :: Studio XPS 1640 How Do I Set It To Prefer 802.11a Over 802.11g?
Apr 13, 2010I'm trying to figure out how to set it to prefer 802.11a over 802.11g when both are offered in an area. I am usually in areas where 802.11g is completely clogged and 802.11a is totally free.
I have it set for 802.11a/g only, but it keeps defaulting to 802.11g and never goes to a unless a is the only thing offered. The only way I can get it to go to 802.11a is if I set it to 802.11a only.
I do a lot of roaming, and 802.11a is not offered everywhere so it is annoying to have to constantly go into the device manager and change it from 802.11a only to 802.11a/g.
My card is an Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN. Does anyone know how to get it to prefer 802.11a over g when they are both offered? There seems to be no option to do it like most cards do. I recently updated the drivers to the latest version, too
