Dell :: XPS 1645 RGBLED Screen Momentary Flicker?
Mar 7, 2010
I just received this machine, and so far so good.
There is some screen behavior that has me a bit confused though and I'm hoping someone here might have thoughts or advice about it.
Every now and again, the screen gets just a bit dimmer for just a very brief moment, not much, just a bit, and pretty quickly, and then comes back to normal. It almost looks like it wants to go into it's "power saving" mode or something, for a moment, and then back out .....

You are correct. Here is that thread.
At this point we are looking for common factors. Post up any other useful information you can think of.
Does anyone know the Hz of the backlights?
Does this flicker still happen on an external monitor?
Human vision factors:
Most people can see flicker at about 80 hz. This is most noticeable in bright light and in the peripheral vision areas. Most people adjust to the flicker rate of their local power so that they no longer notice the flicker.
Most people can see an animation as continuous movement at about 20 Hz. The brain tends to understand that it is seeing an animation and assembles it as movement. On things that are not moving, the flicker is more noticeable as your brain has nothing it can assemble the flicker into.
Some people have said that they can see the flicker while other people around them can't. This could be because some people are less sensitive to noticing flicker. This could also be because the other person is looking at the screen from farther away (say, over the shoulder of the owner) and the screen is centered in their vision, not in the peripheral vision areas. If you are one of these people please let us know it your test persons have actually sat directly in front of the laptop, just like you normally would be when you see the flicker.
I suspect the flicker is actually due to the Hz of the backlights, not the actual refresh rate of the screen.

So I recieved my laptop yesterday and opened it up today. I got everything set up and messed around, yet had to go out for a little while. I left it off power yet when I went to start it up the screen didn't come on! The side light is constantly white when plugged in, and an external monitor works perfectly fine. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this issue? I there any button I could have pressed to cause this problem? Or is a call with dell my only answer?
*UPDATE* Issue resolved by buckZor: Shutdown gracefully, disconnect power. Remove battery. Wait 3 minutes. Plug battery back in & power, open and boot. Display light up?

So I've been following the RGBLED calibration thread and don't think i've found my answer through all the ICC profiles and whatnot.
I've had a Studio XPS 1640 which i exchanged for a 1645. The 1640's screen was showing up as way too saturated with blue causing everything to have very cool overtones. I had that screen replaced only to see the same issue.
Upon receiving my new 1645 I've noticed the same thing. The screen (although slightly to a lesser extent) is still pushing way to cool a picture. None of the ICC profiles have helped other than to push too much green as a result of the change.
My question is should I consider this to be an issue and request a replacement screen. Is there anyone out there who doesn't have an over saturation of the RGB colors in their display? I've seen people complain about too much reds and some with too much green. Also the display going to 1 of the 3 colors entirely. (I have not experience this)
I'm comparing this to my Dell Dimension 2200 Monitor which although is not RGB LED i would assume color accuracy would be near to (although more vibrant) as my samsung 245BW LCD.
Things I've tried. (all of the ICC Profiles provided in the display thread, Windows 7 Color calibration and finally ATI's Color control system in the CCC.

What is happening with the laptop, sometimes I noticed my laptop screen will flicker(or a bright flash as if someone was taking a picture). When I go to the event viewer it tells me Desktop windows service manager has been disabled by the windows system assessment tool. I'I have the nvidia graphics card + Intel(using optimus technology),running windows 7 professional 64 bit.
I forgot to mention when playing videos I think the graphic card makes a strange noise like there isn't enough power or something (Not 100% sure)
I have nvidia gt555 with intel Optimus
Intel 2670m
8GB of RAM
Windows 7 professional
I tried to do a fresh install of windows 7 but the problem still persists and I cannot test it since I have deleted the recovery Drive. How do I test if the graphics card is working properly

On my Acer 5920, the screen flickers off and on when I plug up to my projector to give a power point presentation. I have called Acer NO-HELP; they said it was a 3rd party software issue, which was not true, because there is no software- it is plug and play. I called Epson; they suggested to chage the refresh rate to 60 and I did to no avail.
There final word was that it must be the Graphics Card.

I found a couple other reviews where people said they had a noticeable (more so on dimmer settings, for me) screen flicker with their timelines. I have the 1410 with su2300 proc. Anyone else noticing this problem? It's enough to distract me, which can be annoying, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the visuals.

Anyone heard or seen this before? Every now and then, perhaps 30 secs, perhaps 5 minutes there's a subtle screen flicker.

my white 13.3 inch macbook has developed like a flickering problem, its a good few years old, max memory on this one is only 2gb's. well anyways, the screen, it has only done it intermittently but when opening it for wake up, or when the screen dims, it ocassionaly does like a flicker thing, but only for a few seconds, then it stops. my guess, its the screen invertor.

i was working on my thesis in a completely dark room and realized that the screen on my macbook pro flickers even if the background is completely white. this annoyed me to no end since i have sensitive eyes, so i set out looking for a temporary fix before i try and get apple to replace my panel. anyhow, luck has it that there is a fix out there that at least temporarily stops the flicker (i havent seen it posted on nbr before, and my apologies if this is old news): press ctrl-shift-eject to reset the screen. once it goes blank, hit any key and your display should be good to go. worked for me and my screen has been flicker-free for ~30 minutes.

I've been plagued with this problem for the past month and a half at least, so much so that the laptop has spent the last 3 weeks with Acer and their technical support team in Plymouth (I only got it back last week).
The laptop was sent off with a fault to the screen. It intermittently flickers, mainly when the screen is moved, but sometimes not. The laptop was sent off to Acer 3-4 weeks ago and was returned last week. A report was returned with the laptop and reads as follows:
Problem Description:
SYSTEM FUNCTION - SYSTEM FAIL TO FLASH BIOS
Repair Description:
STORAGE - OPTICAL DEVICE WILL NOT READ/WRITE
Diagnosis/Repair Details:
fitted new ODD and middle cover
Spare Part(s) Replaced:
ODD HLDS SUPERMULTI DRIVE 12.7
COVER.MIDDLE.W/MMN/EKEY-BD
As you can imagine, this report left me completely perplexed but I assumed that somewhere within that they had fixed the screen problem and left me with a fully functional laptop again. And of course I'd been without it for 3 weeks and just wanted to turn it on again!! lol (On a sidenote, I had asked them to check the disk drive also, because back when I first got it, it struggled to read any type of disk. This explains the apparent replacement disk drive)................

It starts to happen and the laptop has been running for several hours. It goes away after a reboot. Its mega annoying when watching a you tube video and it keeps freezing, just for a couple seconds then it goes again. Keeps doing it throughout the video. Also when opening web pages etc. Its aggrivating as heck. Anyone else had this problem. Its not the fans or anything becasue as soon as you reboot its fine again for several hours to even days.

It seems Dell does not have any RGBLED screens available for the XPS 16. What are the biggest advantage of the RGBLED instead of the other options Dell offers? Should I wait for the RGBLED? I'm not going to do any high-end photo or video editing, and I've heard that's one good reason to have that screen.

I noticed its not an option anymore through Dell. Maybe I'm not just looking hard enough, did they get rid of it. The best option now is Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP?

I have an Acer Aspire and it's been good to me mostly; however, I have an issue that I was wondering if anyone could help me with. My screen will flicker occasionally and it has only gotten worse. Sometimes changing the angle of the screen stops it, other times plugging it in stops it but sometimes neither work.

Just curious if anyone else is having this problem/glitch when I unplug the laptop from AC power and the screen brightness is turned up about more than 1 tick the screen turns really red and dark but then brightens up a second later.
It seems odd that it turns mostly red and then back up to normal in a second

I didn't upgrade my BIOS, it came with the latest BIOS because of the graphics card. The people that have fixed it by downgrading have a older version of the same laptop with a different graphics card.

My x120e has been giving me grief recently. It started when, upon awaking the computer, my screen would be very distorted. It was mostly horizontal and was different from the known horizontal screen flicker issue. It would take up large parts of the screen, but no more than half. Now get this, the distortion changed totally depending on what was on the screen. I could even get it to go away completely if I just opened the start menu (with my task bar on the left side of the screen). Typically a restart would alleviate the issue.
I would get a screencap for you guys, but last night I shut down the laptop to 'fix' the issue and the screen never came back on. I can still use an external monitor so I'm not thinking this is a graphics card problem, or at least not entirely.

I don't think this is the same screen flicker that is experienced by the few others due to auto brightness problems...
It's flickering black and then the whole thing turns unresponsive after a while...and although the video shows it happening during a low light environment, i have had this encounter during a brightly lit area as well...

I've posted a copy of what really happens on google drive. Is this a case of motherboard problems? I jsut got my laptop about 3 weeks ago. Any chance for a 1-1 exchange?

I just bought a Dell Studio XPS 16 second hand, advertised with an RGBLED screen.
The laptop works great but I am very sceptical about this display, all the reviews harp on about how amazing it looks but I can't really see much of a difference between this screen and my WLED monitor.

but I can confirm just now that I took the plastic cover off b/c I could not stand the glare anymore, and it's a very nice matte screen underneath!
Now I am going to follow the other bold gentleman and cut out that clear plastic, leaving myself with an antiglare xps 1640!
The plastic is actually 1 mm thick as the xps1340 poster (livincali) stated. I was worried that for some reason the xps 16 would be slightly differently built than the xps 13, but it's not with regards to the screen.
I am confident that the plastic can be cut out with an exacto knife, if not just a pair of scissors.
I do not have any sandpaper .....

I'm having this problem at the moment where *sometimes* the screen does not come on during bootup. "The lights are on, yet no-one is home".
If I'm lucky I will see the Dell splash screen and then it goes black but most of the time I get nothing. Strange thing is that the lights are on for the buttons (volume, play, etc) but the screen is not.
I know its not a Windows problem, because I can here the Windows startup sound being played. Its almost like the signal to turn the screen on is not working.
