Dell :: XPS Divorce And/or Replacement Thread
May 22, 2010
I figured most of us all had/have something in common which is why we bought a XPS. Therefore, I am interested in other laptops being used by fellow XPS owners and past XPS owners.
Let me begin im the owner of a M1330 (specs in sig) since 2008 it has been reliable but lately it has been running pretty hot. Plus I figured its time for a change since I know most laptops begin to act up after a year.
This week I got a Sony Vaio CW series which im using to type this, specs are 4gb ram, 500gb hd, 2mp cam+mic, Intel i5 processor, blu-ray, bluetooth, 14" screen.
It will suffice for now im not as excited about it as I was when I received my XPS but its nice. Really hoping that Dell can make a super reliable XPS 13" in the future

I, being one of the multitudes of sad souls who are now experienceing the end of thier 7900GS's 12-16 month life span decided to look around the net to see if this really is as big a problem as I thought, and I can't belive how many people are posting that thier 7900GS is dying just a couple months after the warranty expires, it's nearly proof that the card is being cooked in our e1705/9400's to the point of failure. and fortunatly for dell, they all seem to be failing JUST outside of the warranty... mine failed just 2 months after my warranty expired.
Well I say we create a petition to send to dell to ask for a recall of these sub-par cards they sold us in our very expensive new laptops. The worst part is now that thier cards are failing they are charging 400 dollars just for the part!!! It's criminal and we must do something.
Please post here if you'd like to add your name and or story to the many already posted. I just want a single thread where we can all post about this problem so I can show dell just how bad this problem is.
I don't know if the 7900gs was made using sub-par parts or if it's the lack of the second heat pipe or both but the fact is these cards are not lasting to term in WAY too many laptops, don't wait for yours to die next post here so we can try and get dell to do something about this!

I decided to make this thread because there are so many of us out there who have all had the same problems and have gone through he** and back with Dell customer/tech support and are wanting to get a replacement and/or already have. Our posts are scattered everywhere so I just thought we should all unify them and post here to help others who are in our situation.
State what you currently have or previously owned, ( ie the bad laptop), specs etc. and what the problems are/were. Then if you have already gotten a replacement, only the relevant specs (the ones that changed or upgrades you got) and any additional notes you want to add about the process, how long it took etc.
If anyone is on the fence about what to do with their situation please feel free to ask. This should be an informative and helpful thread for those looking into getting there laptop replaced or fixed by Dell, or just want some advice on what to do with their problematic 1640/45/47. This is by no means a thread to gloat or brag about your replacement upgrade, but rather a place for everyone to share their experiences and help others. Thanks!

I'm not looking to debate the geforce vs quadro performance nor do I want people to tell me to wait for the 9m series cards, just a couple quick questions.
Does the m1730 have a docking port? From what I can find, I'm thinking it does not. For that matter, does the m6300 have one? I think it does...
Can an 8800gtx from an m1730 be put into an m6300? If not, I'll be fine with the 3600m, but I prefer geforce cards.
If yes, where can you get an 8800gtx and how much do they cost? I've seen people saying anything from over $2000 to $700.... which is quite a difference.
I guess while I'm at it, are there any other huge issues that I've maybe overlooked? I'm thinking about things like the huge LCD problems that everyone experienced with light leakage and whatnot on the m170/9300 series and even overflowing into the next gen stuff iirc.

i thought it might be good to start a thread to discuss how to get everything set up optimally on the M4400 (drivers etc) to run windows 7.
Would be good if people who have been running the beta, or have access to technet could share the experience and information with the rest of us who have pre ordered and are waiting for october 22nd to install this on our machines....

even though this computer is hot to the touch and she is having a few issues with it i figure id put it threw its paces for you guys. id just like to mention before hand that we have the WLED screen (1366x768)
out of the box running with dell's 9.4 drivers it ran a 5060 in 3dmark 06
i ended up having to down grade the drivers to dell's 9.2 because i was unable to over clock with the 9.4's. however even with the 9.2 the only program that would work is AMD GPU clock tool. i was able to test it up to 749 mhz core / 945 mhz mem. it works like a charm, no artifacting or anything. with just one run threw 3dmark 06 it brought the temp up to 76C. after an 45min of looping the test the temps peaked and leveled out at 83C.
it idles around 60-63C at these clocks (stock idle is about 8C cooler)
anyways here are the results for 3dmark 06
dell 9.4 drivers= 5060
dell 9.2 drivers= 5004
dell 9.2 drivers OC(749c/945m) = 5520
i have yet to test if its stable at higher clock then these. i feel as though it still has a small amount of room left, maybe another 20 mhz on ether . i haven't had time to test this out yet though. im probably going to try undervolting the CPU and see if that brings down the temps any. ill report back with the results from both the CPU and GPU when i get a chance to do it all.
this is a spiffy little computer, im sure that once we resolve the screen and power supply issues with dell that my wife will be happy with the unit.

I am starting this thread for the discussion of Windows 7 x64 installation on the M1530. Please limit the thred to 64 Bit only.
I just took delivery of my 1530 this morning and now have it exclusively running Win7x64. So far, so good on basic functionality, but I hope to delve into performance and gaming issues tomorrow. I will be running benchmarks in order to compare 7 and Vista.
So far I have only installed Symantec AV 2009 Gaming Edition and Steam. Everything else is either stock to Win7x64 or came down via Windows Update.

We are all waiting on a refresh of the Dell Studio XPS 1645/1647 to include the 5000 series ATI graphics cards. So to get the message across I have come up with a little thing called "Operate GPU Refresh". If you have been following the iPhone/AT&T you should know of the "Operation Chokehold" that iPhone users took part in to try to get the message across the the AT&T network needs upgrading.
But instead of trying to take down Dell, we will simply be trying to get the message across to them that we want the new cards, and since every other manufacturer pretty much already offers them we "would" rather buy their competition.
On March 30th of 2010 all users who want to participate will visit the "Dell Chat" PC/Laptop sales chat and ask when the 5000 series will be available. Also chime in on the fact that competitors such as HP already have these newer graphics cards available and you are tired of waiting, and if they can't give a solid reason just say "I guess I will go with HP" or whichever company you feel is the next alternative to you.
Goal:
Get the message across that we as customers want the latest hardware.
Get the message across that Dell is lagging behind their competition and if we have to wait any longer we will forget about Dell and buy their competition (in theory).
So set your calendars for March 30th. Dell "D-Day". Us notebook review members telling Dell what we want, and that we want it NOW.

I'm currently working out an optimal set of settings to get this thing running at an average of 40-45 FPS with eye candy and thought I could get some ideas here of where to go. Could we have those users with the game post their settings and driver versions and what performance you're able to land?
And what specific settings dictate the nature of the explosions? I'd be satisfied maxing those out while keeping the other things at "Mainstream."
forgot to mention the game is being run in dx9 mode

It's been suggested in a few other threads that an Inspiron 1545 owners thread be started to discuss any problems, fixes and general thoughts on the Inspiron 1545.
So here goes.
Now I appreciate that, after going through many other posts, this model is not loved by many; but lets remember that this notebook is aimed at the price conscientious individual - it's never going to compete against the XPS or anything.
My own inspiron is sat with the depot now, will be delivered tomorrow.
I'll have a play with it over the next few days and post up a full review asap to help anyone who is deciding whether this machine will fulfill their requirements. Until then, anyone own one of these have anything to say about it?

I think it could be a good thing to summarize what is good and bad about Latitude E6400 and E6500 in a separate thread. Especially for newcomers it is a little bit hard to find this information in the 135 pages long E6400 Owner's lounge thread. I will start with my experiences after seven weeks use of my Latitude E6400.
My specs
E6400 with P8600 CPU, Intel Graphics, 1280x800 CCFL screen, 160 GB 7200 RPM HD, Intel 5100 WiFi, Bluetooth, 6-cell battery, E Port Plus docking station, Windows XP Pro with SP3 (own installation).
Good
Very good Windows XP performance with own installation
LCD screen has good brightness and contrast
Battery life is great
Overall temperature of CPU, chipset etc is low
Audio quality in general is good on my laptop, no skips or crackling audio
Hard drive and DVD drive are 100% stable in ATA/IDE compatible mode
The laptop has a good selection of ports that are mostly located in good positions.
Light and thin design
Fast 7200 RPM hard drive that is also quiet for being a 7200 RPM drive.
Bad
SATA drivers for running in native SATA mode (AHCI/IRRT) are not 100% stable causing some problems with DVD drive and eSATA drives. See below for details.
Fan is set programmed to run a little bit too often/too fast. See below for details.
Occasional delays in Windows Explorer when clicking on folders. This seems to be caused by a lag that appears when the sound "Start Navigation" is played when clicking on a folder.
USB ports on the back of the docking station wiggle a little bit. I will get a replacement docking station that I hope will fix this problem.
Fingerprint reader is connected to a peculiar "Broadcom USH CV" device making it inaccessible for standard fingerprint software. I have got myself a UPEK USB fingerprint reader instead that works much better.
Dell ControlPoint software is bloated and not entirely stable. I have only installed the System Manager part that is more or less necessary and also works better than the other parts.
Overall impression
I am satisifed with my E6400. It is fast, has the features I need and is running cool. There are however some things I think Dell should have put more effort into before releasing the laptop like the buggy SATA drivers, nonstandard fingerprint device and the fan programming. I think Dell will eventually fix these problems but I do feel a little bit like a beta tester. If I had known about the problems before my purchase, I would probably have purchased the older (and hopefully more stable) Latitude D830 model instead..............................

Looking to get some IN-GAME benchmarks with FRAPS, and see what different people's rigs are doing. Why are the M1730 guys allowed? Simple...so we can see what the new M1730 can do, and see if it is worth slapping another $3,000 to $5,000 down on the table.
RULES:
1- To rule out as many variables as we can, we should all use FRAPS for benchmarking. F-11 is the default key to start a benchmark.
2- Tell us about your rig. Be specific about hardware, OS, clockspeeds, and drivers. Having that info in your signature is even better.
3- Cut and paste straight from the FRAPS log that is created in C:Fraps. Be sure to specify what resolution you're using because FRAPS does not document this.
4- Specify what graphical settings you are using for that game. Saying 'Full Graphical Settings' means that you have every graphic option for that game maxed out, turned on, etc. In Bioshock you could say 'Full Graphical Settings, but Dynamic Lighting is Off'. In Oblivion it would be nice if you specify outdoors or indoors. You get the point.
5- TURN V-SYNC OFF. If your scores are pegged at 30FPS or 60FPS, that's nice, but tells us nothing. If you say 'Full Graphical Settings', we are to assume that V-Sync is off. You don't need to mention it.
It is obvious to me that this is not as foolproof as an ORB link. People can edit the text file to say whatever they want it to.

What does everyone think about starting a dedicated thread for the XPS 1640 (and 1645?) with Windows 7? ("Official 1640/1645 and Windows 7 Thread")
I think starting now, there will be a flurry of driver updates, behaviors, tips, questions, etc.,
and it seems it would benefit everyone to have all those in one place instead of having to search through a myriad of individual posts

This thread is dedicated to unclewebb's utility ThrottleStop; its support and promotion. (thanking unclewebb profusely for coding it certainly doesn't hurt )
This is the real deal for any Gemstone Blue users who are throttling, especially those who can't undervolt.
It's surprisingly simple to use - open ThrottleStop.exe, accept the rather frightening warning (it's mostly for Dell users), then click the box next to Chipset Clock Mod.
That's it! Your system should be protected from future throttling incidences.
Tick the Minimize on Close button to send it to your notification area instead of the Taskbar (like RMClock).
(Angelwings, feel free to correct me if I've got this wrong)
