Dell :: XPS M1530 XPVsync / Speed Step Calling All XP Users!
Feb 16, 2009
I have this odd problem with my M1530 using windows XP. I currently mainly play WoW. . . I have installed Windows XP on my M1530. . .
So heres what I do.. I open up CPU-Z .. minimize it so that I can see the current speed of my CPU in the task bar. Open WoW in windowed mode and then play so I can see my CPU speed via CPU-Z.
When I do this and Vsync is off it is normal. Speed goes 2.5Ghz @ a 12.5 Multiplier. (using vsync option in wow to control)
When I turn on Vsync instantly the Speed starts going from 2.5Ghz to 1.2Ghz and back to 2.5Ghz ...
but over and over and over, back and forth.... enough to notice while playing ... it creates stutters. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this. So if anyone has a idea please share...

Hi Friends,
I am writing this new post after getting really frustrated from Googling all through the internet and not finding 1 decent solution.
I have a Dell Studio 1555 laptop and after bearing the pathetic sound quality both from the speakers and external speakers/headphones for months I finally decided to do something about it.
Apparently its not a hardware fault as everything seems to work technically fine but the sound output is really pathetic/high on treble and noise. Theres a word all around the internet that IDT High Definition Audio Codec sound drivers are bad idea and the default ones provided by Windows are much better.
Well i tried to remove, IDT Audio from my laptop permanently but to no avail. There is no option to remove at Add/Remove programs, so i went to Device manager and uninstalled the sound drivers. Upon restarting the PC the IDT audio popped backed in. So, I uninstalled once again and deleted the IDT folder but upon restarting it was back on again. Only that it took 5-6 minutes to install.
Can anyone suggest a way to remove IDT drivers permantly in Windows 7?
Thanks a lot.
Your friendly neighbourhood geek

Could some good techie please kindly mention the step by step method of restoring Dell XPS 1530 notebook back to factory settings ?
Could this setting be done at home or should it be done by an expert Dell representative ?
How to back up all the driver info and various programs info(not the actual drivers or programs, just the info about which were installed before restoration) ?
What precautions need to be taken while restoring

I have a new Aspire 8935G with Realtek audio (AL889, if I read it well) and I'm not able to use digital output.
I tried using a common stereo jack to RCA cable, using just the left (black) RCA to plug into the digital COAX input of my ampilfier, but nothing came from the speakers.
Do you know how to setup the digital output of the Aspire?

I was wondering how often everyones fan kicks in while your running on your batteries. My fan kicks in every 5 mins runs for 10 secs then stops (on my lap not blocking the vent). I was wondering if this was too often.
I know that it also varies from bios versions but i have a12 and my cpu is running at a cool 37' c while my gpu is running at 60 ish.

I have a Dell Latitude E6400 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160m graphics card. When I put stress on the GPU (for example playing a game), it heats up to 102ºC, which is a dangerous temperature. I have called Dell Finland and they offered to replace the motherboard, which I refused because all other users with Nvidia cards that I know of have very high temperatures when playing a game. Dell Finland has now told me to send them an email describing my problem and provide links to other people describing their own problems.
Therefore, I'd like to ask all Latitude and Precision users with Nvidia cards to post their experiences here, in particular the GPU temperatures under load. You can use HWmonitor to measure the temperatures. I am especially interested in hearing from people who have done a "copper mod", since that has been so far the only successful solution to appear here in the forums.

I have a PCG-F580K running Win2k and Ubuntu in a dual-boot config. It runs great for most things I need it for but could use a little more memory. According to Sony, I am maxed out at 256MB but I believe it could take more. The PCG-F580K uses the 440BX chipset, which accepts 256MB modules, but only certain low density types. These should theoretically be the same ones used by Thinkpads of the same vintage. I will point you to [url] for reference. Can anyone confirm or deny the ability of my Sony to use 324 or even 512MB of RAM?

I had an inspiron 9300 a few years back, the build quality was exceptional, it was a great laptop, great speakers, nice keyboard, subwoofer, magnesium alloy construction.
DUAL COOLING SLOTS, a 6800 go video card which in those days was top of the line aside from the gtx.
The design was silver and white which was reminiscent of some apple laptops prior to this model of inspiron. Many didnt like the design and the white trim as they say. I was neither opposed to it or extremely fond of it but I thought it looked nice.
MORE IMPORTANTLY: the laptop had separate cooling for the laptop itself and separate cooling for the video card which kept the laptop very cool and allowed the inspiron to have a powerful graphics card.
Construction was superior...no flexing of the body and no flexing of the lcd panel, you could NOT press against the back of the lcd panel and make dimples on the front of the lcd screen. It was a very durable laptop. It was about 9 pounds and some would call it large and heavy but as I am not one to fall for those terms at that time I compared the size and weight to other 17 inch laptops and it could hardly be called big or heavy. I have to wonder what kind of weaklings cannot carry a 9 pound laptop?

Dell/Singapore has started selling the AMD/ATI equipped M301Z.
Inspiron M301z: Dell's first laptop to take on AMD's new dual-core Neo -- Engadget
If it is introduced in the US at the projected price of $715, Dell will probably have a winner on its hands. It is a beautiful 13.3" laptop. I like it more than the 13R design which looks too much like the butt ugly mini 10. The 301Z refines the back end of the machine and brings the display out to the end of the bottom-half.
Now, take that aluminum design, stick an I5-540M or I7-620M in it with a HD 5650 or HD 5670 GPU.

I contacted the Dell support team to see whether my m1330 is affected by the bad batch of Nvidia Graphic card and I got this respond
-----------------------------
On your concern about the Nvidia Graphics, I should say that your system is not affected by it, however I am a Hardware expert with the XPS Team and would recommend to diagnose the Hardware to identify any problems.
To extensively diagnose the 'Hardware', your active participation is requested. Please follow all these steps mentioned below as they are inter related:
1. Disconnect all the devices which are connected to the system, like:internet cable, usb key, etc.
2. Power off the laptop. Disconnect the power cable from the laptop.
3. Close the system, turn it upside down, slide the battery latch and remove the battery.
4. Keep the battery out and put the system back in front of you..................

I recently converted from a Lenovo X220 to a the Dell Latitude XT3. The XT3 is a better laptop minus a couple design choices. That said, there is one feature in particular that I will miss the most....My old X220 fingerprint reader allowed me to swipe with the latop powered down. This action would boot up the PC and log me in. This doesn't seem to work the same on the XT3. Instead, I must power it up then swipe in two separate steps.
Is there a way to get the XT3 to respond to a finger swipe while it is powered down?

This is a laptop without Recovery Discs, where the original drive partitions were erased and reformatted as 1 big partition. During Vista installation, it always reboots just as Vista is on the verge of "Completing Installation". So near and yet so far. The BIOS shows the hard drive as an IDE drive - even though this is clearly a SATA drive. Is this a driver problem? Do I need to load SATA drivers before having Vista go through the installation?

Personally I try to run out of a standard user account (instead of an administrator account). It’s the most secure way to go and just plain good form IMO. But I realize that most people do not because windows defaults you into the administrator account. Well I just noticed that the ACEeventLog (an event log created by the Catalyst Control Center that you can find in the Event Viewer) spews out a stream of events/errors when I run out of a standard user acccount. These events/errors stop as soon as I go into my administrator account.
I have a feeling that these events have been causing instability in my system when in the standard user account. If its true that its Dell’s video driver that’s doing this it would be crazy. Dell is an IT company and should know that LOTS of their users will be in standard user accounts (any good admin will do this). Well to make a long story short, I’d like to pose a question: How many of you run out of a standard user account? If I'm in the minority then it might explain the instability issues I’ve been having that few others are not.

I am finding the Inspiron 15 at reasonable pricing (from 429.99 to 489.99) so am thinking of buying an early Christmas present.
I need information on its reliability. Will I need to purchase an extended warranty or should the owner be able to operate trouble free for at least three years?

My m4400 seems to like to lock up while switching users. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does the "Please Wait..." spins away on the screen and it will stay that way forever.
The only way to fix it is to force a reboot by holding down the power button. I'm using Vista Business 64.

I totally wiped out my drive and started anew on my 9300. Most of my hardware drivers were accounted for. But, I'm missing sound, wireless, Fn+X keyboard shortcuts, and (most importantly) my ATI X300, which may as well not exist because Windows sure isn't recognizing it.
I haven't been able to get online with it yet, so I'm not sure how many of these problems I can clear up by searching with 7's troubleshooting tools.
Of course, ATI doesn't have official Vista drivers for the X300. Has anyone worked around Dell's OEM drivers, or have those been fine for you?
I really wanted to make it a nice cable/OTA HD Media Center, but I especially need my video card up and running for that.

Well on my way out to the apple store I decided to run up a few competing monitors and find the 30" Dell with higher specs, HDCP S-IPS panel with 6 inputs (even has display port) for EXACTLY 1599...which is the SAME student discount price for the 30 cinema. Spec wise the Dell is better...in reality, I don't know because I can't go see it.
My question is has anyone connected a macbook or macbook pro to this display?
