I have an M1710 with a GO 7950 GTX video card. I also have a Dell 30" monitor that runs at a native resolution of 2560x1600 but the 7950 GTX will not go to full resoltuion. I would like to find a solution to allow me to run my monitor a full resoltuion.
Could I possibly install a Go 8700M card? Would it fit into the 1710 case.
Its happend in XP Pro and in Vista now. Tried Dell drivers and thirdparty video drivers. I'll be playing a game and suddenly my screen will go scrambled. I checked both CPU and GPU temps and they were fine.
Here are some snapshots of a freshly loaded XPS M1710 having some kind of Video issue. Nothing is overclocked and using Dell Drivers for Video etc.. Problem happened when playing WOW and in C&C:3.
I was going to repair my Inspiron 8600 but now I have a chance to get my hands on an XPS M1710 with what is believed to be the same fried video card everyone is experiencing with it...what would my options be for repairing this computer if it is simply the video card needing to be replaced?
I can find the stock replacements through Dell and eBay, but I'm curious if there are other alternatives out there?
if the hard drive from my Inspiron 8600 would be compatible?
I've joined the legion of M1710 users that have had their video card crap out on them. Typical green lines and bars results in chat to XPS support to have 7900GS replaced. That lasted ~ 2 weeks. Dust cleaned out every month, on a cooler pad, etc. Screen goes black suddenly (not screen saver) and a reboot leads to green lines again. Another chat/phone call to Dell results in replacement motherboard AND 7950 GTX. Nice upgrade. So, how long should I expect this card to last? I've had no other issues and really do my best to keep everything clean and cool. And when this card goes (they all seem too?).... I should mention that I received the M1710 as a replacement for a E1705 that overheated, had parts replaced, and then needed to go to the depot to be "fixed," only to return un-repaired and with the wires to the wireless antenna cut inside the case.
after long 2 years of using this laptop, my video card fan died. How do i know this? Well, after turning on the laptop today, i got all these artifacts and my left side fan isnt running which supposedly run when you turn on.
Now my question is, where can i find a video card fan for this specific model to replace it?
I have all sorts of data on this laptop and i dont want to die on me just like that. any info or help would be greatly appreciated.
Specs: 2.0 Centrino Duo--512MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GTX--2G DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ--80Gig 7200RPM HDD--XP pro SP2
Just got this m1710. Has 2.13 cpu, 100gb, 7950gtx, 4gig.
Bought it cheap cause the monitor wasn't working, but would work with external monitor.
Reinstalled xp sp3 without format and started installing driver from dell for bios, chipset, system utilities, system firmware, network, audio, video(which didn't seem to work) and input devices.
At some point during one of the installs and I'm pretty sure it was one of the dell installs not windows updates, that the monitor just popped on and was working. So, my figured ok it works I will now format the drive and do it all over again. Well, didn't work that way. I installed everything again, but the monitor doesn't work now and if I try to install nvidia drivers the computer freezes at some point.
I hope I'm just missing some driver or order or something.
I'm assuming everything works, because like I said it started working and kept working till I started all over.
They gave me a 7900GS instead of a 7950 GTX. I know some of you have had the same problem.
Everything else is fine, I could care less. But, I really feel that I should have gotten the GTX instead. Two Questions:
1) How minimal is the downgrade from 256mb 7800 GTX in my old M170 to a 256mb 7900GS? How big is the difference in the 7900GS vs the 7950GTX?
2) For those of you who have gotten this problem, how did you go about getting the card switched? Did they send a new system? I'd rather they just send the card and I'll swap it out myself.
The replacement was approved on the 8th, and I just got it today. Apparantly it's a new build, not a refurb. But I want the video card that's not a downgrade.
During recent travel I have noticed that while watching videos on fullscreen with VLC Player or Media Player Classic on the laptops own monitor, there seems to be a weird tearing-like effect on the screen.
That "problem" however does not exist with Windows Media Player, or on an external monitor (as at home).
Any ideas what might cause this? I'm running Windows XP SP3 with all the recent updates and my video card is GF 7900 GTX 512MB.
So I started off with MaxRule's M1710 a few months back maybe a year now this September. (My Second M1710) Originally it was pretty basic with a 7900 GTX, 2ghz processor, and 2 gb of ram.
I think I'm truely addicted with just upgrading laptops piece by piece, I mean my 9300 I sold a while back went from a poor x300 to a7800 GTX, and I maxed out everything on it eventually.
Now I've currently moved this M1710 to a 7950 gtx, and a Blue Ray Drive come this Weds, and I'm wondering what I should do next. Should I go ahead and pick up a Core 2 Processor or get 4gb of ram for this thing? Orginally I just wanted to be able to watch movies, and didn't even realize it was blu ray burner as well.
And when I put in this Blue Ray Drive, will it be easy? Does it work with XP and Vista? I've heard it doesn't work with Vista. SHould I just get the Blu Ray Drivers from Dell's Website?
Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 @ 2.16 GHz NVidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX (second replacement of original 7950 GTX; original fried after 14 months of use, first replacement fried after 5 months - Normal? From what I've read the 79xx series seems to have issues) 2 GB RAM @ 667 MHz (Original Dell memory) 80 GB 7200 RPM HD Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (currently don't have access to a 64-bit version, and I'm not sure I want to upgrade as several of the games I play aren't written for 64-bit)
Now that I'm out of classes until the fall, I thought I'd look into upgrading the RAM to 4 GB, however, I've got a few problems/questions stemming from my inexperience with RAM (thanks to this site and some research, I'm now at least familiar with the hardware behind CPUs and GPUs).
First, is the physical replacement of the modules really as easy as the videos that I've watched on CNet and the Dell upgrade websites i.e. open up the compartment on the back with a screw driver, pop up and slide out the old DIMMs, slide the new modules in at a 45 degree angle, push down, close compartment?
Second, is there any benefit to purchasing the Dell memory and/or restriction/caveat to using 3rd party RAM? Will installing 3rd party RAM void the 17 months I have left on my warranty on the system?
Lastly, and this may be a question better suited to the Gaming forum, what kind of performance difference can I expect besides the increased response time? Alt-Tab out of Supreme Commander in the middle of even a medium sized battle results in a wait of at least two minutes before the system is fully responsive. I've heard that Gas Powered Games has gone so far as advising the applying of a Microsoft patch that removes the RAM usage limit of a single program - has anyone else heard of this? What about performance in general usage? It's not uncommon for me to have IE and Firefox open, the former with e-mail (it takes issue with Firefox) and the latter with at least 20 tabs, of course both are closed when I start gaming.
The modules I'm looking at are: 2x of [url] vs. [url]
Last month, I saw the Dell was on sale for 20.99, but I didn't want to act because I was starting finals and didn't want to risk bricking my computer (you never know what may happen when I stick my hands into hardware). If the general advice is to go for the Dell, I'll wait until it goes on sale again before pulling the trigger (unless I hear a reason not to wait). Does anyone know of a general trend when it comes to pricing over at Dell i.e. during the summer, prices are at their peak, bottoming out sometime either late fall or early Spring?
I have an XPS m1710 from the early days when the CPU was an Intel Core Duo T2500. My Dell died and the folks in India told me the mobo was bad.
So I replaced it and I still have the same problem. The problem was when I tried to turn the machine on I got a power light and HDD light for 1-2 seconds then he system shut down. Reading posts it seems my CPU is bad (when I replaced mobo I cleaned out significant dust bunnies from the fans.
So, my real question - - can I install an Intel Core 2 Duo T7#00 CPU in m system or do I need to find another T2500? I purchased a new desk model and I just dont want to toss a good laptop if there is a simple fix.
just got a few questions regarding upgrading my 9400. Currently has 2.0 ghz core duo and 7900gs at 460/700.
if a Core 2 Duo T7500 cpu and a FX2500 512mb video card will slot in with no problems? Im assuming a bios update and i know the fsb wont function at 800mhz, but other than that, it should be ok?
According to a Dell Rep at least.. This is mostly for the people who have the SXPS 16 with the 3670. I was speaking with a dell rep today and she told me that if I were to buy a 4670 and called tech support.
I could ask for their help to install the video card without voiding warranty. I don't know if this is true..
but does anyone know where to get a 4670 besides Dell's site where it's $109
If I bought m1730 with geforce 8800m can I upgrade it later to get the geforce 9800m? If yes, do I buy the video card and install it myself or I buy the card and dell technician will come to my house and install it for me?
I bought my XPS laptop a couple of years ago and got it with the 128 mb GeForce 8400M GS.
I read on a couple of different websites that you could upgrade the XPS videocards on the XPS.
I went to the Dell website upgrade section and when I entered my service tag number, video cards wasn't an option to upgrade; though motherboards were.
Is it possible to upgrade the videocard to the 256 mb GeForce GT; which I should have purchased to begin with? Do I have to buy a new motherboard and put the 256 chip on it? Lastly, is the 256 the only video card I can buy to replace the 128?
A couple days ago my E1705 laptop screen started flickering then shut off on me. I restarted my computer but then screen would still not turn on then i found out that my video card was fried.
I bought my E1705 back when Dell only offered the Ati x1400 and the 7800 geforce go cards and i currently have the 7800.
i have searched around and seen that the 7900 gtx go could be a replacement but everyone who talks about it as a replacement came with a later model E1705 with the 7900 gs installed already
I have a xps m1730 that is equiped with geforce 9800 sli already. I want to know that in case that I want to upgrade the video card, what card I can put in for this laptop.
If i get the vostro 1710 from dell. Can't I just pull the 8600M GS card and upgrade to the 8600M GT or higher video card. I don't think the are welded on the motherboard?
Has anyone even tried this? Asking cause I saw on ebay that the are selling the 8600M GS and 8600M GT for laptops and was wondering.
if anyone has tried to put a 7950GTX from an M1710 into the Precision M6300. My boss wants me to order one for him but he wants to know if he can put in that card for gaming reasons.
I want to upgrade the DELL vostro 1700 video card (8600M GT). I was thinking for a GeForce Go 7950 GTX (possibly SLI) or a 8800 GTX (again, possibly SLI). Perhaps evena Quadro FX 3500M could be suitable (if there are modifications of drivers in order to play with games).
i would like to upgrade my video card, if it is possible and if it is worth it. my 1720 has the mobile intel 965 express chipset family. ive seen sigs (dr650se and someformofhuman) stating that they have the nvidia 8600m gt and was wondering if this is compatible with my 1720.
also i found out through this forum that i can upgrade my cpu (which is the measly t5450 1.66 ghz) to the beastly t9300, and add a 2nd hard drive (which is my first step in upgrading this dell because i only have a 160 gb drive).
i was looking for a new laptop until i came across this forum and found out the possibilities of my dell. i decided to stick with this and just upgrade it! thanks for the insight, and thanks in advance for all the help that i will be asking for!
an Inspiron 8500. I have increased the memory to 2Gb, added a wireless N card and put in a 160Gb HD. It runs Win 7 RC ok with it's Mobility Radeon 9000 32mb but was thinking of putting in a 9600 128mb.
My question is if you're not going to be doing any gaming is the heat sink mod mandatory to use the 9600 in the i8500? Looking mainly to use some of the Win 7 eye candy features. Found a place on the net selling new (supposedly) 9600's for $100, which is what used ones go for on Ebay.
