Dell :: Keeping The XPS 1530 Cool
Oct 13, 2008
I just bought a XPS 1530 and Im looking for a few opinions on keeping it running cool.
1. What fan controller software should I use for the 1530?
2. Is it possible to replace the stock GPU fan with an aftermarket one? If so is there a guide on that.
3. Similar to question #2 is there a guide on replacing the thermal paste on the 1530 with a 8600m GT GPU?
4. Whats the best laptop cooler for the 1530 that lines up to the fans underneath.

Whenevr I remove my e5600 from its dock to use the laptop on the go, the touchpad always goes back to its default settings.
I cant figure out why, but im thinking maybe my wireless Logitech mouse/keyboard that I use while docked has something to do with it?

Are you returning your XPS 1645?
1. Yes, I am returning it or already returned it.
2. Yes, unless the throttling problem is fixed.
3. I will keep it and use Throttlestop until DELL fixes the problem.
4. I love it, I will keep it either way.

I received a new Dell Vostro 1510 a few weeks ago and have to say although the lid looks nice it's a major fingerprint magnet. What kind of an electronics cleaner can I use and what should I use to apply the cleaner directly to the lid with to help keep the lid clean and free of my fingerprints?
Also what should I use to help keep the LCD monitor clean? I certainly won't use Windex and a paper towel. MY monitor is the anti-glare entry level monitor which works great for web surfing and email but not so great for watching DVD's or online videos. It's too late now but if I had to reconfigure the laptop again which other monitor choice should I have selected for better viewing quality?

the way the F keys have been switched on my Edge 14", today I came across some time to fiddle around with it. I googled what I needed to do...and came across this question on yahoo, which is exact what I need. I bought Lenovo Thinkpad Edge several months ago, and I really like it so far. But I use MS Excel a lot and I always use shortcut keys which involve F1~F12. On my thinkpad, I always have to hit "Fn" and "F1~F12" keys simultaneously, and it is a little annoying since I've been used to using F1~F12 keys without hitting "Fn". So I went to BIOS keyboard setting, and enabled the Function key lock. It became a little bit better, because now I don't have to hit "Fn" and F1~F12 simultaneously, but I could press "Fn" AND THEN, F1~F12. But what I really want is the "Fn" key always on without pressing it. On the BIOS screen, it says hitting "fn" key twice keeps "Fn" key always on, but whenever I hit it twice and hit F1~F12, it doesn't function like F1~F12 key, but it just controlls the sound volume or display light. Is there any way to keep "Fn" key always on without pressing it everytime I want to use F1~F12 keys?"
Â
In short, in the BIOS page, once "enabled", you are able to double tap the Fn key and have it stay on without you pressing it each time; however, it doesn't appear to work that way and turns off everytime you use a F key.

I’ve got a tad problem with my acer 5920 , just bought it. Love it but only 1 thing is bugging me. I normally dont keep the battery in as i just move it around in my room . However if i turn off my laptop and turn the mains off and then turn the mains on and the computer on again, The time will reset to the default 2007 time. I thought most laptops have a battery in them to hold time like computers. This does not happen with any of my old laptops, do you guys experience this?

I've had it almost 2 years and im beginning to think the graphics cards are giving up on me
right now it is idle running very few programs, and my temps are (according to HWMonitor)
CPU Core 0 -54-51-63
CPU Core 1 -54-51-62
8700M GT 1 67-67-68
8700M GT 2 -79-79-80
HDD 43-43-44
surely the second GT shouldnt be in the high 70's being idle?!
the top of the XPS (above the keypad just below the screen) is also almost too hot to touch, not long ago I took it apart and gave it a good clean to get rid of the dust but there didnt seem to be much dust at all .....

So I know I made another thread about over heating, but it's not drawing that much attention.
A few days ago my Inspiron 1420 was crashing due to overheating (I've had it for a year and a half).
Dell came out, replaced the motherboard, and things were fine until it started overheating AGAIN a few hours after the techie left. Dell came out the next day with a new hard drive, heatsink and fan.

I know that keeping a battery on charge after it is fully charged can decrease its battery life by 30%, but I also know that Apple's batteries automatically stop charging when they have reached 100%, wait till the battery drops to 97%, and then start charging again. I need to know if the battery life will degrade if I keep the laptop on charge...

if anyone with the coolslice could report on how effective its passive design is at cooling the notebook?
In particular i would be interested in someone with a precision m4400....
Before and after temps would be helpful, how warm the bas of the cooler is when its attached, or if it feels always cool..also if it manages to keep the fan on "medium" speed most of the time....

I asked Acer hotline over the phone for the service guide to my TravelMate laptop, and a very friendly hot-line-guy told me to get it from retrevo.com or from laptoprepair101.com - both sites, however, have been told (from Acer or ?) not to host the Acer service guides any more.
One or two compagnies still seems to have them for sale, but as I don't have any possibility to buy over the net - and don't find it reasonable, either, to pay for the guide to a computer that was expensive enough when it was bought ...
I can find a lot of reasons for Acer (and other manufact.) not to include the service guides in the box together with new laptops - and I might even be able to find good reasons as well for not making it too easy to get the guides at the internet - as long as the products are still produced or as long they are newer than 2 years - but after that time I cannot find any reason at all why they still want their customers to pay for the service guide at a 3.part compagny.
It's UNREASONABLE and UNFAIR - so next time I buy a laptop I might look for another brand with a little more customer friendly policy.
As a matter of fact it is dangerous not to clean the cooler now and then - not doing it might in the worst case cause a fire, so as long as they don't mount a little 'door' to open for removing dangerous dust-cakes they should at least let the service guides be reachable from their service hot-line.
Acer hot-line has no techniciants and nobody there knew how to clean the cooler but admitted that it's important to do it - uncool, unhot or unacer ...

I have problems with the high temperature of my Travelmate 5624WSMI. It is too hot!
However:
- I cannot hear any fan running (I do not know if I should, and I do not remember if I did when it worked properly).
- I read that it might be due to dust. For this reason I tried to clean it (them?) with a can of compressed air but with no success.
- I installed SpeedFun. I read this: GPU 51 °C (or more!); HDO 42 °C; Temp1 32 °C; Temp2 42 °C; Core0 46 °C; Core1 46 °C. As I understand, GPU is burning.
- I tried to open my notebook but without success. I do not how to do it.

I replaced the thermal paste of the CPU and the GPU with "Coollaboratory liquid pro". And I replaced the thermal pad of the northbridge with "Arctic Silver 5" thermal paste.
Here are my sesults (in a 20 degrees Clesius enviroment, T9600, 2,8GHz, stock voltage):
73 dregrees Celsius at 100% load
(instead of 92)
39 dregrees Celsius at 0% load (fan off)
(instead of 45)
According to my research and different experiments this combination is my actual optimum.
The cooler and more silent system supports my usage of voice recognition (using the internal mic).
Of cause later the voltage could be reduced using rmclock.....

Ok, so I really needed more hard drive space in my T350p, I am guessing alot of you are in the same boat I am and the machine is great if only it had more hard drive space.
Unfornately pretty much all the large drives are in either Zif or sata, so changing the internal drive was not going to get me much more space.
So, I looked at other options. I did not want to use an external, they are great and I have several of them, but it is just not as conveniant as having a large built in drive.....

Have not had a laptop for a while and when I did get them, I would not hang on to them for long as I never had the need for them. However, my new job will require the use of one. Nice part - they are paying for it.
Ordered the 1530 a few days ago, loaded. Maxed everything out and also opted for the Solid State hard drive. Hopefully it works as advertised.
I do have just a few questions -
1 - Why did Dell pull the higher resolution panels from the options? Only had the option of 1440?
2 - Is Dell still including all the standard XPS goodies you normally get? The case, cd holder, ear buds.. etc etc or have they gotten cheap and no longer do that? Would suck if they don't.
3 - Lastly, I have read about some issues with the Nvidia GPU. I have also read that Nvidia has rectified this issue. Is that the case with newly built/shipping XPS systems?

After 10 days of using my new XPS 1530, I will give it a 8 of 10 rating.
This is a great laptop. Looks great with a solid build. Great performance too. It is more then I thought it would be. A great value especially with the EPP discount I got it with.
The only flaws that I have noticed are the placement of the power connector being on the left side towards the back of the unit with the 2 USB ports very close to it. It seems very cramped to me. Also could have at least 2 more usb ports. But a USB hub takes care of that. I find this setup very ackward. Also the headphone jack being in the front. Again ackward to me. The speakers are very weak also. Finger print reader is very problematic also.

My kids have wrecked my screen (xps m1530). It was REALLY beautiful, 1440 x 990 LG philips one, am really annoyed. Thanks to your posts on this forum, I found the dell p/n XP059 and know my screen is the LPLDF00 one. Called Dell parts today and the guy said that he would need the EXACT number which can only be found on the actual screen itself; this is the only way he could guarantee it would be the LGphilips one. He didnt seem to think the LPL number would ensure that. Does anyone know what number he is talking about - a bit reluctant to open up the screen casing etc (I'm still using the half that is working!) until its time to fix it. Is there any way to get this number without opening up?

I just ordered my XPS. Well, I got the final quote for my wife to turn into her employer so they can order it and do the payroll deduction thing. So we get interest free payroll deductions for 18 month or so...pretty cool. So it should be ordered in the next few days.
They had the 40% off promotion going on, so that took it down to $1604 from its 'MSRP' price. I did a bit of haggling via email. I told him my wife wanted an Apple...but most of all, we were concerned about price. I then got my 12% EPP discount, which brought it to its final price of $1412. Below are the specs. I think I got a decent deal.
T9300 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667MHz DDR2, 250GB 7200RPM HDD, 1680x1050 WSXGA+ LCD, 256MB 8600GT video, 8X DVD-RW, Intel Wireless N, Bluetooth, Vista Home Premium, 6 cell battery, and a second AC power adapter.

I'm looking to upgrade my XPS 1530 to 4GB of ram and run Vista 64. So I was looking at globalcomputer.com and newegg.com and I found these:
OCZ 4096MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHZ SODIMM Memory
Corsair 4096MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz SODIMM Memory
or
OCZ 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz SODIMM Memory (I know my notebook will still only run at 667, but would this still be better performing then PC5400?)
any thoughts or suggestions?
