Dell :: Touchpad Not Keeping Its Settings?
Feb 27, 2009
Whenevr I remove my e5600 from its dock to use the laptop on the go, the touchpad always goes back to its default settings.
I cant figure out why, but im thinking maybe my wireless Logitech mouse/keyboard that I use while docked has something to do with it?

Need to change the touchpad settings on my Dell XPS 14Z, running Windows Professional XP 64.
Online searches to find the touchpad settings have indicated touchpad settings could be accessed in the Control Panel under Mouse options or via an icon in the taskbar.
Unfortunately, none of these appear true. Control Panel>Mouse  does not have any touchpad tabs and there is no touchpad icon in my taskbar.
Attempts to find the user manual for this model have also proved fruitless. The link on the Dell site for the XPS 14z directs me to a user manual for a different model laptop (M1330).

I've just bought a used Dell Latitude D830 (UK, XP SP2) and find the touchpad won't scroll. Otherwise pad, trackpoint and buttons all work ok.
I went into Control Panel assuming that the scroll areas weren't set up. Not so - unlike on my old C640, there are no separate Synaptics set-up tabs. Nothing - and it claims there's a Microsoft mouse plugged into PS2 .

a few weeks ago (I think after the last windows update) all of a sudden my touchpad settings were gone. I've had this computer (Inspiron N5110, Windows 7) for about 9 months and it's been great until now. The touchpad is now super sensitive and the cursor seems to go anywhere it wants, probably because my palms barely brush it when I'm typing but I usually feel like I am not touching it at all. It will open whatever the cursor is hovering over, even when I don't click it. I tried to find the settings for the touchpad under Control Panel>Mouse but there is nothing for the touch pad.Am I just not looking in the right spot for the settings?Â

I'm currently using a Vostro 5470-20452G with Windows 8. It's about two months old and now the touchpad is not working. I've tried various methods like disabling and enabling the touchpad in settings but it still doesn't work.

After you adjust the touchpad properties like double click speed and cursor speed is there a way to keep these settings? Everytime the computer restarts I have to go back into touchpad mouse properties and readjust everything.

I have had my notebook for 10 days. The cursor jumps so badly that the computer is almost unusable for anything but reading email or web browsing. The only way I can prevent the cursor from jumping is to dsiable the touchpad by using Fn+F7. There is no sensitivity setting in the Mouse properties.Â

When I've got my ThinkPad w530, there was (as usually at every ThinkPad laptop) UltaNav enhanced setting dialog (if I remember correctly, these settings resided at the last tab of OS mouse settings dialog - Control Panel -> Mouse). I have spent a lot of time to configure touchpad according to my needs.
Â
But than I've updated my Windows 7 x64, as Microsoft recommended, and installed some hardware drivers and user applications... And at some moment I've suddenly discovered, that the touchpad and the stickpoint do not work anymore the way I've configured them. Yes, they work, but in the most basic default mode.
Â
Furthermore, when I tried to look at the configuration dialog I had used before to configure them, I found, that this settings dialog is totally gone.
Â
Now my Windows Control Panel mouse setting menu looks as the following screenshot: [URL] ....
Â
Is there any way to restore (re-activate) manually Lenovo UltraNav settings dialog for the touchpad and the stickpoint?

I have three user profiles in my Compaq Presario CQ-42, one is administrator and others are "Other User". When I fisrt saw the synaptics touch pad settings window through my first "Other User" profile 1, in Mouse Properties->Device Settings->Synaptics LuxPad V7.4->Settings, all the options in this window were available for selection and no one was diabled. Now when I go to "Administrator" Profile, Some of the options in this settings window are disabled and appear to be partly hidden. Like the option "Enable Pinch Zoom in Pinch Zoom section" and "Enable Pivot Rotate in Rotating" appears to be hidden/disabled.Â
For verifying this, I created the another "Other user" profile 2 but no success and I found the same problem here also. I also tried to unistall the synaptics driver several times from all the profiles but every time I re-installed them and checked to get the same result. The settings were only accessible for "Other User" Profile 1 each time and were disable for Administrator profile and "Other User" Profile 2. I can produce the snaps of same if required.

I just bought a XPS 1530 and Im looking for a few opinions on keeping it running cool.
1. What fan controller software should I use for the 1530?
2. Is it possible to replace the stock GPU fan with an aftermarket one? If so is there a guide on that.
3. Similar to question #2 is there a guide on replacing the thermal paste on the 1530 with a 8600m GT GPU?
4. Whats the best laptop cooler for the 1530 that lines up to the fans underneath.

Are you returning your XPS 1645?
1. Yes, I am returning it or already returned it.
2. Yes, unless the throttling problem is fixed.
3. I will keep it and use Throttlestop until DELL fixes the problem.
4. I love it, I will keep it either way.

I received a new Dell Vostro 1510 a few weeks ago and have to say although the lid looks nice it's a major fingerprint magnet. What kind of an electronics cleaner can I use and what should I use to apply the cleaner directly to the lid with to help keep the lid clean and free of my fingerprints?
Also what should I use to help keep the LCD monitor clean? I certainly won't use Windex and a paper towel. MY monitor is the anti-glare entry level monitor which works great for web surfing and email but not so great for watching DVD's or online videos. It's too late now but if I had to reconfigure the laptop again which other monitor choice should I have selected for better viewing quality?

the way the F keys have been switched on my Edge 14", today I came across some time to fiddle around with it. I googled what I needed to do...and came across this question on yahoo, which is exact what I need. I bought Lenovo Thinkpad Edge several months ago, and I really like it so far. But I use MS Excel a lot and I always use shortcut keys which involve F1~F12. On my thinkpad, I always have to hit "Fn" and "F1~F12" keys simultaneously, and it is a little annoying since I've been used to using F1~F12 keys without hitting "Fn". So I went to BIOS keyboard setting, and enabled the Function key lock. It became a little bit better, because now I don't have to hit "Fn" and F1~F12 simultaneously, but I could press "Fn" AND THEN, F1~F12. But what I really want is the "Fn" key always on without pressing it. On the BIOS screen, it says hitting "fn" key twice keeps "Fn" key always on, but whenever I hit it twice and hit F1~F12, it doesn't function like F1~F12 key, but it just controlls the sound volume or display light. Is there any way to keep "Fn" key always on without pressing it everytime I want to use F1~F12 keys?"
Â
In short, in the BIOS page, once "enabled", you are able to double tap the Fn key and have it stay on without you pressing it each time; however, it doesn't appear to work that way and turns off everytime you use a F key.

I’ve got a tad problem with my acer 5920 , just bought it. Love it but only 1 thing is bugging me. I normally dont keep the battery in as i just move it around in my room . However if i turn off my laptop and turn the mains off and then turn the mains on and the computer on again, The time will reset to the default 2007 time. I thought most laptops have a battery in them to hold time like computers. This does not happen with any of my old laptops, do you guys experience this?

I know that keeping a battery on charge after it is fully charged can decrease its battery life by 30%, but I also know that Apple's batteries automatically stop charging when they have reached 100%, wait till the battery drops to 97%, and then start charging again. I need to know if the battery life will degrade if I keep the laptop on charge...

For my M1710 what's a good setup and resolution to use? I really hate how it never really shows you what your current settings are. IS that a bug? Or is that just me?
If other M1710 user could post up there optimal settings it would be much appreciated. EVerytime I run their optimal settings it sets my resolution to 800 x 600. between 800 x 600 and 1900 by 1200 or whatever there are alot of possibilities so any ideas would be great.

Just wondering what we use in terms of Power Management, whether its part of the OS or its Dell's Control Point Manager, and whether it affects the fans kicking in or not under comparable settings.
I use an M4400 & an E6400, both have the latest BIOS revisions, and both use Vista's native applet, selected to "Balanced".

I don't use it very much; it's more a backup machine and the occasional Skype to grandkids. Been having a problem with being unable to use windows update; keeps getting an 8007005 error.
Googling reveals a lot of folks with the same problem, some different fixes, and mixed success stories. I've tried several of the fixes with no luck and probably made things worse than they were before (now Defender won't update).....

I'm planning on buying a Dell Studio 15 and upgrade the standard 1280x800 screen to a 1920x1200 one(for games, videos etc).
My concern is, with this display setting, should I find the icons/texts etc be too small for everyday general use, what other resolutions setting are there to choose from?(the 1920 screen) Would 1440x900 be available or does it go straight down to 1280x800? Can any Dell owners confirm this please?
Likewise, if I upgrade the display to 1440x900, I assume 1280x800 will be available as well?

This may not be a question that is specific to my particular notebook, or even to Dell but then again, it might be; I'm not sure.
Previously (that is, before I recently reinstalled Windows) my computer used to have some sort of "memory" for volume settings.
I normally set the volume to around 20 when using headphones and set it to around 100 without headphones.
My computer had a "memory" for this in the sense that whenever I plugged in headphones the volume would automatically set to 20 and when I unplugged them, it would go back up to 100. However, this no longer happens and I don't know why

In the BIOS on my Latitude D630 there is an option for the CPU to be seen as a single processor or as two processors. The CPU is a T7500 Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz processor.
The BIOS info states that some applications may run faster when it is seen as two processors. Can anyone give me any insight into what these options actually mean in terms of PC performance ?
Also, what types of application would be impacted by the single processor or two processor options ?

Is there anyway to change the dpi / magnification settings in Windows 7 without having to log off and back on or restart the machine?
I'm looking at a Studio 1557 laptop as a desktop replacement with a 1080p (1920 X 1080) screen which I think will make the text and icons quite small.
I can easily change the DPI to 120 (125%) or 144 (150%) and make everything readable which is great however when it's at a desk it's going to be connected to two 20 inch plus monitors and these require the normal 96dpi (100%).
The problem is the machine will be frequently connected and disconnected and having to close and reopen all applications to restart the machine properly is a real pain.
Windows XP used to warn you about having to restart but if you didn't things were still resized. With Win 7 nothing happens until you do.
