my friend has been describing these odd symptoms on his brand new inspiron 15, he seems convinced its vista being a crappy OS, but i dont think so.
he has the pdc T4200, 2gb ram
The following is what i copied from our conversation:
Chris says:
it feels like the CPU usage is at 100%
but the cpu usage is not at 100%
its like something somewhere has its grip on your computers resources and refuses to let any other app use it
it was like tat once
it kept stalling firefox
only went away after I restarted the com
but it wasnt only firefox tat was affected
when extracting my video files I noticed them moving much slower
and my 720p res videos stuttered
but my memory was healthy and cpu usage was healthy

I am dual booting Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and Windows 7 b7000 32-bit. The laptop has the copper mod on 7/28/2008 with very good results. It lowered my idle for GPU by 11C and full load by 21C (very good in full load). But my two recent BSOD from Vista and Win7 make me think my GPU is dying, but it doesn't have the typical vertical line problems like other owners. Likewise, it's working perfectly fine after each BSOD (until the second one in Win7).
BSOD in Vista (see attached picture):

No event viewer log or memory dump available. Notice the short black bars visible on the blue background. I don't know where those bars are coming from. There are a few white words were NOT static. Some text were shifting during the photograph.
BSOD in Win7 (no picture due to automatic restart):
See attachment of mock-up made in Vista desktop. It's nowhere near what I saw, but it has a similar short strokes of light on a black background. My background was a picture of GREEN grass blades.
The second BSOD occurred while watching YouTube on the same day as the one in Vista. Basically, the screen was fine then suddenly it turned black with short strokes of color showing through where the icons are. About one second later, the screen gets to the classic BSOD blue, but this blue is black instead with the same short strokes of color. And then the laptop restarts after the memory dump, and everything is normal again including the POST.
The GPU averaged around 60C while the CPU was about 50C using HWMonitor. I never had these weird looking BSOD, especially ones with artifacts. It's the artifacts that make me more suspicious. Log file from Windows 7 below:

no slow-downs, BSOD's or anything - not even a fan running high and hot. All of a sudden, video blanks, no beeps, no ctl-alt-del, etc. Then no reboot post beeps and no BIOS. LED power light comes on, HD light flashes once, stays off , and battery charge light works until battery is charged. Holding PWR button down forces "off", and PWR on repeats single HD light on to off. Is this the motherboard? Also, pulled HDD - needed business info from it right away, so it reads on other computers, scanned for both viruses and errors, and is clean.

after cleaning a malware trojan horse from my system, I need to reinstall my OS (Win. Xp). After repartitioning and reformating will I have to install all the way back to dos and an earlier version of windows and then upgrade to xp? I have dos disks and win3.1, and upgrades disks for 95, 98 and xp? I have a dell inspiron 1545.

I mean I heard people say that lots of laptop die just right after the warranty expires.
My computer is almost turned on all the time(I put the computer to sleep for around 8 hours a day), and I transport it every weekday.

I bought a Inspiron 1545 in the outlet section, got it for $420 with a coupon I got off ebay.
I got the laptop and I absolutely love it! But there is a problem, the graphics card driver keeps crashing, this is an annoying problem and I think it might progressively get worse, so I'm worried.
My options so far that I can think of are:
Do a complete OS reinstall (can I use my dell cdkey to reinstall vista?)
Send it in to get fixed, if that's the case, what kind of fixing will they do?

I was all set to order my 1555 but something/one prompted me to take a look at the 1545 again (in fact the 'someone' was my bank manager lol)...
With a few specs downgrade, I could save £200!($335)

I ordered two basic Inspiron 1545's on March 16th. $479 each on the one day special.
Dell says it will arive on April 6th. Does Dell usually take this long to deliver?
Both have Dual Core Pentiums. Can they be upgraded to Core 2 Duo later? Are the CPU's soldered on the main board?
Ram is limited to four gigabytes, even though the laptop uses a 64-bit CPU. Is this something that might be fixed in a future BIOS upgrade?
Is there any way to upgrade the onboard graphics? I found an ExpressCard chasis that has PCI express slots, but it costs over $700. I could build a PC for less than that. Do I have any other options?

should i charge it everytime when i use it? or

I just looked at the pictures and specs of the new Inspiron 1525 replacement, 1545, and I couldn't believe what I have read. No HDMI port, no firewire port, only 3 USB ports, no modem, no eSATA. Also, it is 15.6" 16:9 screen, which is fine, if they offer higher than 1366x768. It is more like the 13" Inspiron than the old 1525 to me. I think Dell is going to re-align Inspiron as a cheap line like the HP Presario line. Dell Studio will compete with HP Pavilion.

My question is if the early 1545's came with LED's or CCFL's? I see all the 1545's now come with only LED screens.
I ask because on the 'Dell Outlet' it doesn't state if it's a LED screen or not. It just says: "15.6 WXGA Laptop Screen Display with TrueLife"

I am looking to buy a new 15" laptop. A top of the range inspiron 1545 costs £629 and the top XPS M1530 costs £849.
However, looking at the spec - the Inspiron seems to have:

i've searched around a bit and see i'm not the only one who hates this touchpad (just traded "up" from an 8 year old machine whose pad worked flawlessly), but no-one's mentioned my gripe yet:
the tap speed cannot be adjusted high enough to keep up with the taps when tapping the scrollbar equal to using the button. i use my laptop for newsreading so accurate line-by-line tap-scrolling is something i've come to take for granted, but on this machine
i have to use the button or deal with 2-moves-to-every-5-taps scrolling - unacceptable! especially when machines from 10 years ago are care-free. having this pad on my beautiful new Dell is like getting a new Ferrari with a loose steering wheel

My fan on the inspiron 1545 will not stop running. The laptop is quite hot. The battery from Dell died and replaced with a third party battery and adapter which have not been working well either. Battery will not charge so it is currently attached to power source at all times with the battery in the laptop.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that will not power on. Â After ordering a new power cord and battery, still nothing.I went on line and found videos on how to disassemble the laptop to check the power port. I found that mine was broken.I ordered a new one and following the instructions I replaced it. Still nothing when I press the power button. No lights on the computer at all. Â

I got an old laptop (dell inspiron 1545). I bought it charger and installed Windows 7. then I discovered that he had a strange problem. As if the keyboard is not calibrated. I press a button and he thinks it's another key ... I thought it might be a hardware problem but when I plugged in a USB keyboard had the same problem and even when I uploaded the "virtual keyboard " on screen the problem continued ... I went to the site of DELL and the diagnosis tool indicated the computer is fine (their detection software glitch found in DVD-ROM but it really has nothing to do with it) I still tried to delete the drivers of the keyboard from the computer and reinstall but the problem remains you might know calibration software keyboard?

I've noticed that the screen doesn't seem to be evenly lit. For example when I set the desktop background to black, it looks pretty black at the top of the screen, but as I look further down towards the bottom it turns almost medium gray/blue-ish.
I've tried all brightness, contrast and gamma settings with no luck.
Has anyone else seen this problem, and is it a reason for sending back the laptop? Or is this something "you get" for buying a lower-end laptop like the 1545?

I was interested in getting another hard drive caddy for a 1545 but looking on Dell's website by model # they do not even list the 1545 per se.
They have a choice for "15" which I assume will include anything across the board for the 15 "family" models so I looked in there but no parts like this.
I tried ebay and googling around, found several places that sell spare Dell parts, even called & spoke to one but it seems to me that (a) Dell doesn't sell a part like this separately, and (b) places that do sell these kinds of parts are salvaging them from old/dead PCs and since the 1545 is a fairly new model spare parts haven't really surfaced for it yet.
Am curious if folks here know of any decent places to find this kind of thing though, since I certainly could be overlooking something!

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1545. When I type, it will open windows (such as a find menu, replace menu, or even a new document) or reformat my text (hanging indents, etc.) out of the blue.
It acts as if the control key is being pressed, but I am very careful not to hit it. At first we thought it was a sticky key, but replacing the keyboard did not fix the problem.
We reinstalled all the drivers, ran diagnostics, etc., but none of it did any good. Dell support said they had never heard of this problem. Nothing they suggested helped. Finally we had them send us a replacement.
The second computer arrived yesteday and it does the exact same thing. When I am typing in Microsoft Word, Excel or even Notepad, it erases text (sometimes the entire document), opens random windows, etc.
What is going on? I can't believe that three keyboards in a row would be faulty, but the problem does not happen when I use a wireless keyboard. It has been less than a month since we ordered the computer originally. Is there anything that can be done or should I just return it and look elsewhere?

I have a brand new Dell Insprion 1545. Everything has been good on it, and then all the sudden today the touchpad became totally unresponsive.
The pointer doesn't move AT ALL when the touchpad is touched. Luckily, I have a USB mouse, but having to use it kind of takes away the portability.
but it's entirely possible that I made some sort of stupid error or changed some setting to make the touchpad unresponsive.
