I bought a Inspiron 1545 in the outlet section, got it for $420 with a coupon I got off ebay.
I got the laptop and I absolutely love it! But there is a problem, the graphics card driver keeps crashing, this is an annoying problem and I think it might progressively get worse, so I'm worried.
My options so far that I can think of are:
Do a complete OS reinstall (can I use my dell cdkey to reinstall vista?)
Send it in to get fixed, if that's the case, what kind of fixing will they do?
Thanks.!

I currently have a latitude x1, it served me well, but it's time to upgrade. My options are something within the 13"-15" screen range --no more external disk drives--such a pain in the backside. My main concern with which i need assistance is what
Dell screen would be best visually? My position requires extensive computer use so I need a screen that would be best on the eyes. What i noticed with my current model is that it puts a lot of strain on my eyes. Perhaps it is the brightness, or perhaps it is the actual quality of the screen, in any case I need help selecting an appropriate model for me.
I specifically want to go with dell because I receive a discount through them.
money is not an issue. I primarily use my notebook for MS Office applications, media editing, and web browsing -- occasionally play a game or two or watch a movie.
My current options are Vostro 1320 screen options- 13.3 ultrasharp WXGA LCD w/true life or, -anti glare 13.3 WXGA.
XPS Studio 13 -Edge to edge 13.3 HD WXGA LCD -Edge to edge 13.3 HD WXGA Slim WLED LCD
Latitude E4300 -13.3 Wide screen WXGA WLED panel for latitude ON
I'm currently running 190.40 drivers for my GeForce 9500M on my SXPS13. Before updating to 190.40, clicking the little green NVIDIA tray icon that shows what mode you're running in allowed me to choose my mode manually through the use of two radio buttons.
Currently, I can only switch between "Boost Performance" and "Save Power" by switching power profiles in Windows. Is there some way I can get back those radio buttons without having to go back to the older driver?
I know this question has been repeated, but what are the best things that can be done with the XPS Gen 2 (M170) to polish its shine? Can a graphic card with 512MB be installed? Mother board replaced?
One more thing, Anybody succeeded in replacing his/her old system with a new one with Dell?
I am stuck debating between the 15.4 WLED (1440*900) and the 15.4 non-LED (1920*1200). I am just not sure which I would prefer. If the WLED came in a 1920*1200 option I don't think I would be so concerned.
I really like the size, weight, and potential power savings of the WLED screens but I am used to working on larger monitors (22 and 25 inch) running at higher resolutions.
What does everyone think about these two choices? Will I be happy with the WLED at the smaller resolution or is it better to opt for the traditional screen with the higher resolution?
Just so everyone knows the laptop won't be my primary computer but will get a lot of use while working on graduate work away from home, writing website code, and general use. The only gaming activity it might see is some occasional WoW.
I'm not interested in a large resolution (I guess that 1280x800 is enough in a 15" screen) but it seems that the display with this resolution has a smaller view angle (especially vertical) than the 1400x900 display that maybe is not very good if you spend some time reading documents.
I've recently had one of my D620's fail on me due to overheating GPU, and now that I've given it to a family member, I've been thinking about what I could do to help the issue,
as she watches quite a bit of TV shows on YouTube and GPU temperatures shoot up to 170F or so even with the back of the laptop jacked up. My D630 hovers around 150F just doing office-type work .....
this is my first time posting, and i have a question.
i've heard that later on there will be different color lids for the sxps 13 and 16.
i understand that this is both a studio and an xps, so it makes me wonder if i can have cool designs on the top. i don't know how thats gonna fly with the leather, because black is the only color that i can think of that would go with it.
so heres my question: do you think that dell will release custom, or at least different colors for the sxps? possibly midnight blue, the RED one, white, brown, green. anything. and if you do, when do you think they will release the new options?
I was wondering about the E6500 screen options. The options shown for LED screens are:
15.4in Wide Screen WXGA+ (1440x900) with LED backlit 15.4in Wide Screen WXGA (1280x800) LED
I need a LED screen because the laptop will be used to outside in direct sunlight alot. Brightness is very important. Resolution however is not. After talking to Dell on the phone they told me the LED backlit is much brighter then the standard LED option. However, I am wondering if this claim is true and that their not just trying to make me get a 100 euro option I don't need
im a pretty average college student and i need to replace my laptop, ive deteremined it down to the studio 15 b/c i like its battery life, but i cannot decide what to do about the graphics card
i will put flatly i do not game, however i do run alot of sort of UI fancy up stuff like topdesk, windowsblinds, and so forth, and id like to be able to run aero and output using hdmi
I was going to repair my Inspiron 8600 but now I have a chance to get my hands on an XPS M1710 with what is believed to be the same fried video card everyone is experiencing with it...what would my options be for repairing this computer if it is simply the video card needing to be replaced?
I can find the stock replacements through Dell and eBay, but I'm curious if there are other alternatives out there?
if the hard drive from my Inspiron 8600 would be compatible?
My mother's Dell Inspiron e1505 needs a new battery. However, after she did research, she said that the OEM Dell batteries are really bad, and that 3rd-party options (such as Rayovac) are better.
I've always been told the opposite--that the OEM batteries are the best.
I have the XPS m1330 with the nVidia 8400 GPU. Got it back in September of 2007 with just one year warranty.
I just started getting the rainbow colored vertical lines on the screen today, did research, and found out it is due to faulty GPU design.
Called up Dell, and they said even my one year extended warranty due to this common GPU error was over in September of 2008.
They also said I am out of luck, unless I want to go through their out of warranty repair department.
I didn't use the laptop on regular basis till just 8 months ago when my old one finally gave out of me after 6 years. So m1330 has been only used for 8 months, and now I am stuck with bunch of verticals lines, and no hope.
I'm trying to do a clean install of Win 7 on my 1545 with the 64 bit Win 7 cd that Dell sent and when it comes to choosing a partition I'm confused by what options I have.
I get faced with 3 partitions the first one is like 70gb and says something about OEM at the end and it wasn't there when I did the clean install of Vista after receiving this laptop earlier this month.
The other 2 partitions were there before the recovery one and the one where I previously installed Vista. Why is there now a 3rd one that mentions OEM and why is it taking up so much space?
I'm fed up deleting stuff all the time and I want to also run a proper dual boot configuration with Vista and XP (Because I've heard from you all that XP = the win for SLI and stuttering issues.)
My options are to either run single hard drive mode or RAID 0. Obviously RAID 0 means the same size hard drives, but if i went single hard drive mode i could get the
320 gb WD 7200 RPM 16mb CACHE (use as main drive for vista) AND 500gb WD 5400 RPM 8mb CACHE (use as XP drive and storage)
OR i could get 500gb x2 for RAID 0 and partition it with an XP partition on the D: drive.
I think 320x2 is not enough, if I'm upgrading I should go for at least 800gb.
My question for you guys, is do you think single mode performance of a 7200 RPM 16mb cache drive will be enough, and barely noticable than 5400 RPM 500GB discs in RAID0?
ok so heres the deal, all the sudden, I cant access anything that an administrator can (Im the only person who uses this computer)
I was trying to access my folder options but its not there under tools, and when I try to access it with the run command, I get a message that basically says access has been disabled,
how do I restore administrative rights so I can bring the option back? thanks!
Okay so to start off i just reformatted my laptop following the instructions that came with it and everything works fine.
The question i have is about the appearance of the desktop.
Before i reformatted it i had all the factory settings, this included that bar at the top including the media options and the internet explorer logo. My question is how do i get this again,
i want that bar lol. Also i lost all the dell XPS wallpapers that were included before. Is there a way to get all those factory options back
I woul like to know how much i can get with the 9 cell battery, LED display, ssd and 8400. I am looking at a 13.3-14.1 with long battery life. Any other suggestions? I like the illuminated keyboard on the studio 1340, but it's heavier and i hate that leather part, plus the airflow problems. Lenovo u330 is nice, but have some battery problems as i saw.
I'm planning to purchase a Dell Latitude E6430 in a few days time but I have a couple of things to clarify before I purchase this laptop. The question is, Dell manual correctly says this supports up to 16GB of RAM. However Dell does not provide/ship 16GB of ram with this laptop.
I would purchase aftermarket 16GB of ram to do what I want to do with this laptop. But I'm uncertain which RAM specification I should buy. Should I buy DDR3L (1.35V) or DDR3 (1.5V) SODIMM ?
This is what the Latitude E6430 manual says :
MemoryMemory connector two SODIMM slotsMemory capacity 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4 GBMemory type DDR3 SDRAM (1600 MHz)Minimum memory 2 GB Maximum memory 16 GB
There is no "dell touchpad" tab in my mouse settings which I could use to enable/disable the touchpad in various ways. I installed the driver below which was given to me on this forum, I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
I think the E4200 is a great machine, and I can probably get one cheap off Dell Outlet. My only real concern here is hard drive capacity. The standard options of 64GB or 128GB SSD aren't going to cut it for me...
I'd want to have at least a 256GB SSD or one of the Toshiba 250GB 5400RPM 1.8" drives.
I know that the E4200 has a 1.8" hard drive slot, so a standard 2.5" notebook hard drive will not work at all.
But its 1.8" slot should mean that regular 1.8" hard drives should work in it, no? Surely the computer can use either a 1.8" SSD drive or 1.8" hard drive
I just recently purchased a Dell Latitude E4300 and i'm pretty happy with it overall.
However, i'd like to connect an external monitor to it. I noticed that it only has a VGA port (unless i'm blind), but Dell's website makes many references to it having a DISPLAY-PORT.
It even sells an adapter for this model: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=330-2915
My geforce go 7900 just went on my inspiron 9400. I went on ebay to check prices for that card or the gtx version but there are really expensive for such an old card.
Does anyone know of any other cards that are compatible with this model? I dont really care what goes in as long as its as cheap as possible, my mum just uses it for internet browsing.
I just had a D420 replaced By Dell for heating issues- after 4 motherboards- they Gave up and offered a replacement-
Now I got an E4300 and not to thrilled with it any comments about the 4300? did i just get a bad apple. My issues are = poor WIFI pickup.
it came with a 1397g card and i get 4 bars max sitting on top of the router- leave the room and i get 1-2 bars and 1mbs, at the router max is 40mps-
I switch the 5300 card from my e6400 and it does go up to 80 ( 130 in the e6400) but i still get drops - and still see none of the neighbors routers i see on my other machines.
