Comparing the specs, it looks like the probook 4420s is great value compared to the elitebook 8440w. the latter costs 70% more !
If the build quality of the probook is anywhere close to the elitebook, I am puzzled as to why there isnt more attention on the probook.... Just Too NEW?
been comparing the differences in these two machines. look very similar. 8540 has the fingerprint reader and the numeric keyboard on the side. other than that, not seeing a big difference. i plan on using primarily for business (software development). the elitebook would seem to make more sense for me. however, the biggest downside to the 8540p is that it is not yet available. hearing feb. but nothing definite.
I've just got my 8540p and I am looking for some undervolting tool for the Core i7-620M procesor and also some underclocking tool for the nVidia NVS 5100M.
I'm a casual gamer (mostly WoW, and that's not much of late) but a heavy developer, mostly server stuff. So that means virtualization. My current rig is just too old/slow to handle what I'm looking to do. So, I'm looking to step up.
The biggest thing for me that I'd really like is to be able to handle 2 internal drives. Eventually SSD, but not have to start that way. I can't seem to find that piece of info on the ENVY. The 8540w does have this capability.
So, that being the case, does anyone see issues w/the ENVY instead of the 8540w? Looking at the available specs, the video card doesn't have the DDR5 option the 8540w has, but I'm thinking that might be ok. CPU choices are comparable, as is the RAM speed...
I decided to go with a HP Elitebook this year because I got a great deal for a 8540w.
If you plan to do a clean install with your use the HP Support Assistent to install all the drivers, it's much more compfortable than using the SoftPaq INstaller or even install all by hand: Support Assistent Download
Case The magnesium case of the Elitebook is realy great. Hard as a rock, nothing is flexing and the cool feeling of the brushed aluminium is very exclusive. A Thinkpad T510, which by itself feels pretty solid (despite some keyboard- and palmrest-flexing), feels like cheap plastic compared to the Elitebook.
The display is completly covered by a magnesium case covered with a brushed aluminium surface and has the same great touch as the palmrest. The hinges keep the display tight in place, no bouncing at all, but you can open it by using only one hand. The Thinkpad needs two hands, because the base unit gets lifted too if you don't push it down....
I have been looking at the Dell Latitude e6400, Lenovo T410, and the HP Elitebook 8440P. Dell is slow on the tech refresh of the Latitude and the T410 is not as solid as I would like (Plastic, Loose Battery, Squeaky Keyboard).
I am learning that you really cant customize an HP unless you don't care about the price tag. I mostly use Business Apps, Cloud Services, and Demo software/hardware products (Demos in Virtual Box Machines). My main criteria is a light weight, durable machine. Of course the faster the better!!!
An 8440P with i5-520M, Integrated Graphics, 1600x900, 4GB Ram, and 250 GB HDD is over $2K when customized.
Pre-configured with an i7-620M, NVIDIA NVS 3100 (512 MB), 1600x900, 4GB RAM, and 320 GB HDD is $1500.
Will the i7 and NVIDIA significantly reduce the battery life and run warmer?
I was looking at the new Elitebooks today and saw that there are now 8xxx series machines with 14" screens and that there is not a 6940p. Is the 8440 intended to replace the 6930? Also, why is the screen on the 8440x 14.0" rather than the 14.1" size that appears to be the norml? Another change in aspect ratio?
I'm in the UK - what is the difference between the VPCF11Z1E/BI and VPCF11X5E? The first one is available on the Sony UK site, and the second the Sony Style site. If I spec up the X5E to the same spec, it's £70 cheaper!

A few questions though:
I really want the best screen possible. Do these both have it? Is it Adobe RGB?
I need 8GB of RAM - is it cheaper to get it with 4GB and buy the extra 4GB seperately?
Is a 128GB SSD worth the £120 extra over the standard 500gb 7200rpm disk (currently included free)? Is the SSD that Sony include any good, or should I buy a 128GB or 256GB one seperately? Do they have a limited life span?
Finally - is it full of bloatware? Will I need to flatten it and reinstall Windows to get it running well, or is the VAIO stuff worth having? Are the disks for Windows 7 supplied, and are the drivers easy to find?
I think when I bought this machine I was told that it had Bluetooth. I have a Sony VAIO VGN-FW190EFH, and according to this specification sheet from Sony, it indeed does have Bluetooth.
I downloaded the latest driver from VAIO's support site, but when I tried to install it, it said that it couldn't detect a Bluetooth adapter!
I bought a Bluetooth mouse today but when I tried to connect it, my laptop is acting as if it doesn't have Bluetooth.
So I replaced my thermal paste and noticed that my hard drive was not a Seagate like my spec. sheet listed, 500GB w/free-fall sensor, but was an older toshiba model!!!!
This unit was a "brand new replacement".... so I just thought I would warn any folks who are spending good money and could possibly not be getting what they pay for.
I bought a Z2 VAIO a while back, and curiously my Z26 didn't come with the VAIO spec sticker on the palm rest. Now, I know that you would be going 'why would you want that?'

Just bought a new HP Elitebook 8540p Windows 7 Professional 64 bit energy star laptop. I do a lot of video encoding, Photo shows. Was working fine, but then just stopped playing DVDs. What I can do?, it has no warranty.
My HP elitebook 8540p has been serving me well for years but recently it shows a bluescreen and resets after entering the windows password. Â Diagnostics when starting up say:
Memory Test: Failed Failure ID : UOEDUC-56C77E-XD7U3G-40N603 Product ID : WTO38ES#ABH Memory Module 2 Bottom-Slot 1 (right) Â This means the memory card underneath the keyboard should be replaced, correct? I am confused by the message saying "Module 2 Bottom-Slot 1 (right)", I see only one card... If so, what is the best way to acquire a new memory card (Primary memory board)?

HP Elitebook 8540W, HP Docking Station VB043AA#ABA, Windows 7 64-bit; audio out works fine from laptop internal speakers and laptop headphone jack; when I plug speaker cord into line-out on docking station, the sound continues to come from the internal speakers; when I right-click speaker icon and select "playback devices" I see "Speakers / HP" and "Headphones (RTC)" but I don't see any option to switch to docking station lineout.
I bought two new KTH X3BS/4G Modules for my Elitbook 8740w. They show up in the BIOS as 8GB. RAM test says everything is oke. When I start the notebook it has all kind of blue screens.
Mostly it says DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
Maybe it's a timing problem. Where can I change the timings? I don't find any options in the BIOS. Â I tried booting linux. Also doesn't work and hangs. I did the BIOS Update to the newest version... Â The problem might be, that the memory is only supported on 8740w QUAD Core Machines. My Machine is only dual core i5 m520.

How can i change the email quicklaunch button to open an email client other than outlook.I set mozilla's thunderbird as my default email client during its installation, but the quicklaunch button still opens outlook. Â I'm running windows 7 32bit.
I have an Elitebook 8540w laptop. I wanted to upgrade RAM memory from 2x2GB to 2x4GB. I bought not a kit of 2x4GB as i wanted to, instead I bought two 4GB memory chips from HP.  After replacing the modules the laptop does not boot up.  What has been done: - Bios Default Restore  My first question is: i realize it is better to buy a kit of 2 matched chips, but is it a must?
The laptop is a HP EliteBook 8440p running Windows 7 Professional Win7Pro.   The HP Wireless Assistant has the following message: Wireless LAN Adapter: This device is disabled in the device manager and cannot be enabled from Wirelss Assistant. It can still be turned off.  I have checked the device manager do not see where to turn it on.  There is a blue light on the above the keyboard and on the front side of the laptop. It's turned on in the bios. I've tried to resintall the driver.  The wireless device model # installed is: intel model: 622anhmw sps: +572509-001 OB
How to proceed? I hope to avoid a complete resinstall.
Recently purchased a refurb HP Elitebook 8440p, and noticed that even though the mute button works the quick key just above the keyboard is always orange. Is there a way for me to correct this so it shows orange only when muted and green when not muted?
My client has an elitebook 8440p and has been using the fingerprint logon for so long he has forgotten his bios password. There is no setup of security questions or usb spare key available.Â
We can get into the bios via fingerprint but cannot remove the bios password or regain this password. From what I understand, even though he can log in with his finger and access the bios with his finger, he cannot remove or change his typed password.
From other posts I saw that HP emailed a file to remove the bios security to the user in similar cases. I am looking for who he should contact, via email, phone, etc, to get his bios security removed. Again, he can access using his fingerprint only at this point and wants to remove all security at this point.
I'd like to use this machine for Oracle development (as it's predecessor was certified for Red Hat). Â When building the machine from the options I've chosen the SUSE OS, that I plan to replace later with Oracle Linux. I've also eliminated all unnecessary hardware to reduce any incompatibilities and maximize the battery life which required deselecting Windows. Â However, in terms of updating the firmware for the machine, no one does linux firmware updates which means that I have to have access to Windows OS, which means having to purchase a copy of W7 and somehow getting hold of the necessary HP downloads, hopefully free from the download area! Â I've read a few articles that say that it is possible to use the 120GB mini-card SSD as a bootable drive as long as it is SATA and NOT PCI. The build options have the drive as a SATA which is also confirmed in the QuickSpecs document as well as it being a SATA3 / 6GB/s. Â Whether the mini-card SSD can actually be used as a boot drive?
