I have an Elitebook 8540w laptop. I wanted to upgrade RAM memory from 2x2GB to 2x4GB. I bought not a kit of 2x4GB as i wanted to, instead I bought two 4GB memory chips from HP.
After replacing the modules the laptop does not boot up.
What has been done:
- Bios Default Restore
My first question is: i realize it is better to buy a kit of 2 matched chips, but is it a must?
I bought two new KTH X3BS/4G Modules for my Elitbook 8740w. They show up in the BIOS as 8GB. RAM test says everything is oke. When I start the notebook it has all kind of blue screens.
Mostly it says DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
Maybe it's a timing problem. Where can I change the timings? I don't find any options in the BIOS.
I tried booting linux. Also doesn't work and hangs. I did the BIOS Update to the newest version...
The problem might be, that the memory is only supported on 8740w QUAD Core Machines. My Machine is only dual core i5 m520.
My Envy15-3000 notebook freezes while starting up. It only makes it to the Starting Windows screen then Microsoft icons stop moving. This has been going on since Tuesday (8/12). I ran checks and the memory and harddrive (quick and full) tests came back positive - i.e. no problems. I finally decided to reformat it yesterday (8/14). It gets all the way through the reformatting process until it wants to start the system for the "first time" (I imagine that this will be the last time it restarts in the recovery process) and still freezes on the Starting Windows screen. If I try to hard shut off and try any other boot up option I can think of (Safe Mode, etc.) it says Recovery Failed and asks me to retry, get details or Save Log. When I retry, it goes back to the freezing. As such, I am now in a seemingly endless loop of retrying the recover to get to the freezing start windows screen.
All I want to do is wipe the hard drive and reload everything. I'm not interested in recovering the old data as I have everything backed up. I got no error messages in my Run it, Memory, etc tests, so I am at a loss as to how to proceed.
I have the original drive recovery/windows 7 DVDs that came with the system.
I keep getting blue screens complaining about igdpmd64.sys x00000050. I noticed on the day that I suddenly started getting blue screens Windows installed a bunch of windows 7 x64 updates. Does the recent windows updates can cause this?
At times I cannot even reboot normally when it occurs. I have had to restore to a previous version.
I decided to go with a HP Elitebook this year because I got a great deal for a 8540w.
If you plan to do a clean install with your use the HP Support Assistent to install all the drivers, it's much more compfortable than using the SoftPaq INstaller or even install all by hand: Support Assistent Download
Case
The magnesium case of the Elitebook is realy great. Hard as a rock, nothing is flexing and the cool feeling of the brushed aluminium is very exclusive. A Thinkpad T510, which by itself feels pretty solid (despite some keyboard- and palmrest-flexing), feels like cheap plastic compared to the Elitebook.
The display is completly covered by a magnesium case covered with a brushed aluminium surface and has the same great touch as the palmrest. The hinges keep the display tight in place, no bouncing at all, but you can open it by using only one hand. The Thinkpad needs two hands, because the base unit gets lifted too if you don't push it down....
considering between these, any HP owners out there that could give me some feedback (subjective+bonus objective benchmarks)?
Any reviews+video reviews of the EliteBook 8540w/8740w that you deem accurate?
How do you like the trackpad, multitouch anygood?
Display quality I hear is excellent but 16:9 format vs 16:10 for a pro line ok?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got the Elitebook 850 G1 and I've put all the settings to sleep when I close the lid and wake up when I open it. I've checked both settings in windows and in the BIOS and it's all good but when I actually do it, it doesn't wake up but restarts the computer instead. So when I've been typing away on Word, I constantly save it but it doesn't go back to where I left it. I thought it was one of the graphics drivers at first, because it has dual graphics, intel and ati. It's had some issues with the ATI but I think I've fixed it. I'm running windows 8.1 Pro.
I tried changing the settings to hibernate instead and what it gave me was a BSOD. Video_dxgkrnl_fatal_error. i remember it did that the first time i tried to do it before when it was on sleep mode.
I've had this computer for a long time. Last night it was working perfectly and then when I tried to turn the computer on, it loaded and went to the startup screen with the microsoft logo and from there it got stuck. I tried to hit F11 and do a diagnostic test but when it was finished it told me the computer was not able to restart because of memory or something like that. I've also tried to take the battery out, but that didn't work either.

My HP Pavilion G6 Notebook freezes at the HP startup and does not get passed that initial page and into windows. I tried pulling the battery out, resetting many time and ran a quick diagnosis. And after running a quick diagnosis it came back with the following error:

I just purchased a used Elitebook 8540w with i7 quad core and four memory slots (I love it!). It is running 64 bit Windows 7 Professional It came with one 4gb memory module and I purchased an additional 4gb module to bring total RAM to 8gb.
I have the HP document that shows for two 4gb memory modules, one should be in memory slot 1 and the other in memory slot 3 for correct functioning of dual channel memory. All set right?

In the Elitebook 8540w, the primary memory slots under the keyboard are clearly labeled "1" and "2" However, the expansion memory slots on the underside of the chassis are also clearly labeled "1" and "2" Opps! There is no "3" and there is no "4" In which of the unfilled three slots do I install the second 4gb module for correct functioning of dual channel memory?
Wife has a Dell Inspirion E1505 that keep freezing on the Vista boot screen. You know the one with the 3 yellow bars that just run across the screen right before you see you login name.
Well it just freezes and never gets past that screen. I walked her through reinstalling Vista over the phone and it boots from the cd and then loads all the drivers off of it and then goes to the Vista boot screen again and freezes..
My two weeks old dell inspiron 17R doesn't boot into the OS (Windows 8).
By hardware diag. passed the test, found nothing.
I just received an HP EliteBook 2540p with a Toshiba 1.8 250 GB HDD. Before committing any data to it, performed all the diagnostics. The Long DST Hard Disk test freezes at 99%. I have not been able to complete this test after several attempts --even after updating the HP UEFI System Diagnostics from Ver. 2.5.0.0 to Ver. 2.7.2.0. However, the Toshiba 1.8 HDD passed the SMART and Short DST tests. Is the problem with the Long DST test attributable only to the HDD or could it indicate a faulty system board?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire 7740-5691. The boot screen freezes with pixel distortion at the top. I've tried all the restore discs. I found where some people referenced a similar problem with other computers and they were fixed by resetting the bios. I can't figure out how to do that. There's no place for that in the boot settings option and there's no visible coin battery to temporarily remove to reset.

When I turn it on it says F1 system information and automatically goes to the F1 screen where it displays the sys info. It says press ESC to exit but that does nothing. In fact, no keys do anything. I tried to get to other screens when booting but it won't let me do anything. The laptop is only a few months old and I still have the basic 1-year warranty. Every time I boot it up, I see the Hp logo appear and then go away after a few seconds like usual but instead of seeing the Windows logo, theres just a blank black screen command prompt and nothing happens at all. I did a self hard drive test and memory test in bios and they both passed. I tried going into the system recovery option on startup and it does the same as when I start it up and go to that blank command prompt.

I have let HP Dealer for my country to check things out, they say the hardware is okay, but the only thing i did not let them use the harddrive, due to confidential data on it. But my problem is that it looses connectivity at random, sometimes after 45 minutes or after 4 hours. Sometimes the laptop freezes during usage of the laptop. I need to do a hard reset(holding the power button for 20 seconds).
I have started Windows without start up programs to no avail. does the same.
I'm using: McAfee antivirus, windows firewall, Toad 9.01, MS OFFICE, ssh programs, FTp programs.
Another colleague has the same laptop with the same operating system on it. with the same antivirus, and he does not have this problem.
My G6 laptop freezes when moved. When the battery is jostled when you move it and rest it on something new it freezes even when plugged in.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavilion dv6-1107X Entertainment Series notebook. When I turn it on I get an inconsisent series of very loud short beeps nearly always in 3 groups. First group can be 4 to 6 beeps. Second group can be 1 or 2. Third group just goes on and on until the Windows Boot Manager pops up. Once I select the Vista operating system everything appears to start working as normal.
Here is what I have done:
1. Replaced motherboard and CPU
2. Checked and tested hard drive by diagnostic and in another machine - okay
3. Have used a known good hard drive in this machine - same symptoms, no change.
4. Checked and tested RAM stick in both slots, by diagnostic test and on another machine - okay
5. Did a Factory Default recovery - Operating System (OS) behaved erratically.
6. Did a Clean Install using another machine - OS works but same symptoms as above with beeps and Windows Boot Manager.
7. Installed all required drivers as required in Device Manager (after a LOT of problems trying to find the HP driver download support - I had to search for HP Compaq Pavilion dv6-1107AX to find a site that linked to the driver downloads).
8. Have run AVG anti virus, and 3 x anti spyware (Malwarebytes, Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware). Nil bugs founds.
9. Reset BIOS to defaults.
Am also having problems from time to time access BIOS. It takes several attempts but can be gained by pressing F10 immediately after the first screen with ESC option on it. Also have problems access Safe Mode using F8 but perseverance is required and it will work eventually.
I replaced a dead HD with an Intel SSD on my TM 8473T. I have the latest BIOS version of 1.23.
I wanted to install a fresh version of windows (via USB) but when I get to the section on creating partitions, I get a "windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the controllers is enabled in the BIOs menu".
The BIOs shows the SDD and the initial setup of widows shows that partitions are created but the install does not continues copying files over.
My Dell Studio 15 is only about 3 months old and I have been having this problem for the last month now.
Every couple of days or so my laptop lockups - the cursor sticks and there's nothing I can do other than power it off and boot it back up and then its fine for the next couple of days.
This is random... sometimes it happens when doing something intensive, sometimes it happens when its just sitting idle on the desktop after it has only been switched on for about 5 mins
