HP/Compaq :: Is The 8440p A Replacement For The 6930p

Feb 11, 2010

I was looking at the new Elitebooks today and saw that there are now 8xxx series machines with 14" screens and that there is not a 6940p. Is the 8440 intended to replace the 6930? Also, why is the screen on the 8440x 14.0" rather than the 14.1" size that appears to be the norml? Another change in aspect ratio?

HP/Compaq :: HP Elitebook 8440P

Feb 16, 2010

I have been looking at the Dell Latitude e6400, Lenovo T410, and the HP Elitebook 8440P. Dell is slow on the tech refresh of the Latitude and the T410 is not as solid as I would like (Plastic, Loose Battery, Squeaky Keyboard).

I am learning that you really cant customize an HP unless you don't care about the price tag. I mostly use Business Apps, Cloud Services, and Demo software/hardware products (Demos in Virtual Box Machines). My main criteria is a light weight, durable machine. Of course the faster the better!!!

An 8440P with i5-520M, Integrated Graphics, 1600x900, 4GB Ram, and 250 GB HDD is over $2K when customized.

Pre-configured with an i7-620M, NVIDIA NVS 3100 (512 MB), 1600x900, 4GB RAM, and 320 GB HDD is $1500.

Will the i7 and NVIDIA significantly reduce the battery life and run warmer?

HP/Compaq :: HP 6930p Fan Control

Aug 25, 2009

how to control the fan on the HP6930P?

I disabled "fan always on AC" in the bios.

The fan is always on. It doesn't disturb at the lowest level, but it ramps up every 5 mins or so for 2 or 3 seconds. I find that ramping up disturbing and would like to disable it. Considering how cool the air coming out is compared to laptops I have had in the past (Thinkpads and Toshiba) I would say HP is being conservative with their settings.

Is there a program or some bios setting?

HP/Compaq :: 6930p Or T400

Mar 15, 2010

I want to ask something about these laptops:

- Which one has better build quality?
- Which one has better display?
- Which one has better keyboard/trackpad/trackpoint?
- Which one is cooler and more silent?

Has anyone used both of them? Has anyone switch from T400 to 6930p or vice-versa?

HP/Compaq :: EliteBook 6930p

Oct 6, 2009

I'm aiming to buy a new HP EliteBook 6930p in January 2010. There are a few issues that I've read about which concern me, however.

Some of these I have read have been fixed, although I haven't seen much in the way of confirmation of this. So I'm wondering, of these, have any been fixed in the latest production models of the 6930p?

1) The lid takes too much pressure to shut and/or doesn't stay shut.

2) The battery is loose when attached (any danger of it falling off?)

3) CPU whine -- I'm planning on getting it with a P8800 and ATI HD 3450 256MB, if that matters.

HP/Compaq :: 6930p ScreenLED Vs Non-LED

Jun 14, 2009

I'm a potential 6930p buyer. I really want to know is there a big difference in picture quality between LED and non-LED screens ?

I would like to buy a model with dedicated gfx and 1440x900 screen but I would settle with lower resolution screen with LED backlight if it's better than higher res one.

By better I mean better viewing angles, brighter, better colors, etc.

Is it worth getting LED based screen on 6930p ?

HP/Compaq :: HP Elitebook 6930p Discharge

Oct 17, 2009

I just swap out the the motherboard for a working one and change all the components inside and the monitor don't power on. All the lights show the fan spins but no picture. Before I did the motherboard swap the same thing happen. The shop I took it to said it needed a discharge from the build up over time. After the unfix-able corrupt bios problem I was force to swap boards. How do I do the static discharge? I ground myself with a steel pipe took apart everything put it back together still the same.

HP/Compaq :: HP 6930p External Display

Nov 30, 2009

I bought HP 6930p with ATI graphic card, WIN 7, and connected to the external display 24" (1920x1080) trough VGA port. There is a very noticable blurry and annoying image on external display. I tried different settings, but nothing did not help. Is there any solution to this problem? could be my graphic card or vga output damaged? Since with my 4 years old toshiba notebook, image was clear.

Has anybody docking station and is DVI output working fine (clear image)?

HP/Compaq :: HP EliteBook 6930p Upgrade

Nov 2, 2009

I'm looking for information about upgrading capabilities of my 6930p.

Now it has Intel T9400 (CPU-Z tells: Socket P (478) ) processor, which is very good, but not best.

Since I purchased Intel SSD 80GB Gen 2, I noticed that performance of my notebook is limited by processor (it has 100% load while my Win7x64 boots up or while loading some big application).

I found several options for mobile processors which support PM45 chipset and Socket P:

QX9300 (12M Cache, 2.53 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) 45 Watts
X9100 (6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) 44 Watts
Q9100 (12M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) 45 Watts
Q9000 (6M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) 45 Watts
T9900 (6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) 35 Watts

My current:
T9400 (6M Cache, 2.53 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) 35 Watts

One seller on eBay told me that QX9300 will not work in my desktop without giving any reasons. This fact confused me and I wondering which processors will run in 6930p?

HP/Compaq :: DVI? Connecting 6930p Via A Dock

Jun 2, 2009

I'm thinking about buying the HP 6930p Elitebook. One concern I have is that it only has a VGA port and no DVI, HDMI or Displayport for connecting an external monitor. I plan to connect the laptop regularly to a 24" display.

I thought one workaround might be to get a docking station for the laptop, which has a DVI connection. As the laptop connects to the docking station via a different port, I assumed a digital video signal would be sent. However, when I called HP to confirm if this was possible, they advised me that as the laptop only outputs VGA, even when it is connected to the dock, the only thing I could do would be to connect it via the dock's VGA port; it couldn't be connected via DVI. Is this correct? I have received incorrect info from HP and Dell on more than one occasion, so I wanted to check on here. Would the DVI port work on the dock or could I only use VGA?

Also, if not, how much better would a DVI or HDMI connection be versus VGA for that size of display.

HP/Compaq :: 6930p: Un2400 Wwan Only Works When Battery Inserted

Aug 29, 2009

I am using a un2400 wwan UMTS modem on my HP 6930p (WinXP, SP3) and noticed that it is automatically deactivated when the battery isn't inserted into the laptop (PIN Code is also deactivated on the SIM card). Once the battery is installed, it works without any problems.

Can anyone confirm this being a normal issue with this modem?

(the Huawei EM770 modem on my eee 1000HG works with or without an inserted battery but it also doesn't require the firmware to be loaded first, so maybe these two can't be compared..)

HP/Compaq :: 6930p "Core2Duo Whine Noise" Has Been Resolved- Without Disabling Speedstep

Jun 12, 2009

I just got a new Elitebook 6930p and its a fantastic laptop other than the dreaded "CPU whine" as some call it. Most uneducated people believe it is the CPU that makes this noise but in reality this has NOTHING to do with the CPU. Its the power components like capacitors and coils that make the Piezoelectric Effect which causes the noise.

I could not bear the whine noise after a few days so I took matters into my own hands. Sure I read about stopping the C1-C4 states in Intels speedstep but thats not a proper solution IMO since battery life will suffer. So how can we mask or cover up this annoying noise? How can we seal it inside the laptop so it does not reach our ears? I have the solution!

tube.JPG

Seal it up all the power components with silicon sealer. Silicon sealer is perfect as it does not conduct electricity. These components do NOT generate any heat either.

HP/Compaq :: WXGA Vs WXGA+ For 14.1" Business Notebook (6930p)

Jun 18, 2009

I've decided to purchase an HP 6930p. I will mainly be using it for business - Word, Outlook, the Internet, Excel etc. I won't be playing many games on it (if any) or be doing any video editing. I have a 24" display, which I can use for any graphics work (Photoshop etc). I'll be using the laptop about 50% of the time away from the office - at libraries, coffee shops, or other offices/meeting rooms.

I'm trying to decide which resolution to get - the WXGA or WXGA+. I know a lot of people on these forums recommend the higher res screens; however, I imagine a lot may use their systems for games, video editing, CAD, web work etc. I'll be doing intensive office work. For a 14" business machine, what is the best resolution?

Also, if anyone happens to be a 6930p user, is there any difference in brightness between the two screens? That could be a factor.

HP EliteBook 8440p OS/Software :: Bios Password Removal - Using Fingerprint Logon

Oct 23, 2014

My client has an elitebook 8440p and has been using the fingerprint logon for so long he has forgotten his bios password.  There is no setup of security questions or usb spare key available.

We can get into the bios via fingerprint but cannot remove the bios password or regain this password.  From what I understand, even though he can log in with his finger and access the bios with his finger, he cannot remove or change his typed password.

From other posts I saw that HP emailed a file to remove the bios security to the user in similar cases.  I am looking for who he should contact, via email, phone, etc, to get his bios security removed.  Again, he can access using his fingerprint only at this point and wants to remove all security at this point.

HP EliteBook 8440p OS/Software :: Can Install W7 On Mini-card SSD And Use It As Boot Drive?

Apr 24, 2014

I'd like to use this machine for Oracle development (as it's predecessor was certified for Red Hat).

When building the machine from the options I've chosen the SUSE OS, that I plan to replace later with Oracle Linux. I've also eliminated all unnecessary hardware to reduce any incompatibilities and maximize the battery life which required deselecting Windows.

However, in terms of updating the firmware for the machine, no one does linux firmware updates which means that I have to have access to Windows OS, which means having to purchase a copy of W7 and somehow getting hold of the necessary HP downloads, hopefully free from the download area!

I've read a few articles that say that it is possible to use the 120GB mini-card SSD as a bootable drive as long as it is SATA and NOT PCI. The build options have the drive as a SATA which is also confirmed in the QuickSpecs document as well as it being a SATA3 / 6GB/s.

Whether the mini-card SSD can actually be used as a boot drive?

HP/Compaq :: Replacement / Quieter Fan

Jan 23, 2009

I've been on the HP site and to be honest, it's not the most clear and concise site to use.

I have a relatively old HP530 (p/n GU327AA#ABU) which is still pretty nippy and fault-free (touch wood). The only problem is a very noisy fan which seems to be a common problem with these laptops and HP laptops in general.

Could anyone please recommend a replacement fan for this HP model or do I have to stick to the same fan and/or buy from HP?

I've not yet tried removing the back and cleaning the fan as it doesn't sound faulty, damaged or impeded at all, it simply runs loud, very loud! I've also just ordered a laptop cooler for it to sit on but I'd still like to get its' fan sorted out if possible.

HP/Compaq :: Replacement Keyboard

I've got the HP Pavillion DV5-1250us Notebook (bronze finish) which has the classic keyboard problem! You can't read the keys because of the lousy color combination they chose. 90% of the people who bought this notebook ended up getting the keyboard replaced.

My notebook is STILL UNDER WARRANTY.

I read in a lot of places, including Newegg.Com Customer Reviews and across discussion forums - People were able to call in and HP sent them a replacement keyboard FREE of charge; including shipping and all.

When I got on the phone with them today, they are willing to replace the keyboard free of charge & all - but they want me to SEND IN my entire notebook to them! How come they want me to send in the notebook whereas in other instances they sent the owner the replacement keyboard?

I've had Toshiba send me a replacement keyboard in the past; why can't HP do this?
