I checked out the service manual, to read up on disassembly. Thinking about opening my notebook up and removing the heat pads and replacing them with copper shims to reduce heat. that is, unless someone can find a way to downclock the GPU for cooling purposes... But I'd like to get it cooler so the fan won't have to run all the time.
View 10 RepliesMy friend has a 15'' unibody Macbook Pro. He's thinking about getting a cooling pad for it, and he asked me for suggestions. I said that I really couldn't advise him as Macbooks aren't built like regular laptops with the fans on the bottom. Even still, would a traditional active cooling pad lower temperatures by any significant amount, or would it not be worth it. I would usually advise anyone who asks to get a large all metal cooling pad, but if it's not going to do that much, I don't want him to waste his money.

Now I get underload temps Up to 94C on GPU (and around 80 on CPU -
despite the fact that it can only use 3 of its 4 gigs of RAM, I still love my new DV5.
There's only one, tiny kink...
It's getting hot. Very hot. My hands aren't burning, but I can feel the heat in my palms.
Speedfan readings:
Core 0: Average temperature's around 47C
Core 1: Avg. Temp. is 49C
GPU: Here's the real problem. IT'S ON FREAKING 54C!!!
These temperatures are bloody DANGEROUS. And I'm going to be using this for gaming.
I just got my DV3T. I noticed that the cooling pad I currently have will not work with this laptop since it sucks air from under the laptop, while the DV3T sucks the air from under the laptop and blows it out the side.
So are there any cooling pads that work well with the DV3T? Ones that blow air from the bottom to the top?
I just got a new 6930p. It's rather warm on the left side where the palm would rest and causes a rather big discomfort.
Is there any type of cooling pad that would cool it down?
The DV5T is one of two notebooks that I'm considering and I have a question related to the heat while gaming. Many have recommended a cooling pad, and many also suggest simply raising the notebook .5-1" in the back. With the natural lift of the 12 cell battery, would the cooling pad still be necessary for long gaming runs? I don't want to pay the extra $20 for the 12 cell only for minimal cooling gains and still needing to buy a cooling pad. Or is it cooling pads are highly recommending for all laptops when gaming?

Very nice machine in every other aspect, except for the noisy fan that I've learned from reading here and elsewhere that HP does not recognize as a problem.
So, I'm thinking of replacing it myself. Can I do that without voiding my warranty? What about having an authorized HP repair center do it for me, if I shell out for the fan myself?

I have HP pavilion dv 4 1242 tx laptop. I have 320 GB HDD and want to replace with 500 GB HDD. I tried to open the HDD cover from back and I saw HDD in small caddy in which HDD was placed.
I do not know how to procedure further as I am afraid i might damage the inbuilt HDD during removal.
I need procedure on how to remove hdd from caddy with proper tips and precaution to be taken while doing so.

I was going to grab a UJ-852 drive as it is listed as compatible with the NW9440...and near as I recall the only difference between the two models was the graphics card options and the included warranties.
My NX9420 has been running pretty much 24/7 since I bought in in around in early 2007.
Been through three HDD upgrades and now at 500GB, 4GB RAM...still plugging along wonderfully. Until the DVD drive started popping open just because...I finally had enough, took it out, opened it up and the danged front ribbon cable was so weakened it just fell apart in the middle at the bend...soooo, no real hope of repair so I felt it best to just upgrade the drive to something newer...hence does the UJ-852 and will it fit...I truly have looked, emailed vendors and cannot seem to figure out of the drives are only for the external Multi-bay II or I can remove any attached adapter and use the old mounting bracket then slide it into the bay and be done...maybe a new drive but nothing more...
My sister has a HP laptop with a bad DVD burner, it won't burn and it makes a grinding sound whenever a disk is in the drive. I don't know the model, anyway it's still under warranty and I'm wonder if she will have to send the laptop back in order for them to replace it. Sending it back is a big no no, and I can replace the drive myself.

I need to buy a refurbished/spare part motherboard to replace the one that died in my other computer, but I can't figure out which one to buy. At first I thought it was as simple as buying a used DV9000 laptop or motherboard, but apparently not only does the screen size (13 vs 19 inch) matter, but also a number.
I see numbers on ebay with stuff like "447983-001"--that's why I thought that one number on the bottom of mine was important. But I can't find that number on any motherboard on ebay, and it only turns up 300 pages on google, which leads me to believe it isn't the right number.

If your base enclosure (the bottom chassis cover) gets accidentally damaged, what happens to the service tag when you replace that part yourself?
You see, that part carries the service tag on it for warranty purposes. I know the mobo is also tagged (tattoo'd) with the service tag info, but then what happens if the mobo dies, and you have replaced the bottom cover?
My guess is that you could peel off the service tag from the old part and somehow glue it onto the new one, which wouldn't be very nice.
Also what would HP do if they were carrying out the repair?
I got an hp dv4 for christmas '08 and i really love the portability of the computer, 14 inches is perfect, but its gaming capabilities are shot bc of the integrated graphics. My parents bought the laptop to surprise me, but they don't really know much about computers and thought it would be good for games. I just bought a 2530p, with 1.8-inch 120GB hardisk. The partition is assigned as below.
- 101GB for C:
- 9GB for D: (HP_Recovery )
- 1GB for F: (HP_Tools)
I would like to replace existing 120GB HD with larger one, and would like to ask some question.
1. what is the largest size of 1.8-inch hardisk for 2530p? I refer to "Service and maintenance information" manual, the hardisk size seems only up to 160GB, could I installed 260GB or even larger hardisk?
2. Is it neceessary to keep the partition of HP_Tools or HP_recovery?
(if I delete the partition 'HP_Tools' or 'HP_recvoery', can the OS be booted up?)

i just found this forum and it seems like you guys could help me answer this question. i have a dv2000 laptop i bought about 2 years ago and the screen has started to mess up. essentially it has two problems.
1. there is always a vertical line about a pixel thick that stays a yellow color. no matter what is on the screen, the line is always yellow. if i bend the display panel a bit it disappears but comes back as soon as i let go.
2. when i open and close the laptop to adjust the screen angle, the screen starts flickering with these white lines. i have to keep messing around with the screen (moving it back and forth) for it to come back to normal. im not sure if a cable is loose or maybe broken.
im assuming that i need to replace the entire display panel but im not sure if i can get away with just buying the lcd screen and replacing it. i can probably get rid of the yellow line on the screen but i think the flickering is caused by something else. could it be a loose cable that i just need to fix?
Broken left hinge is a known problem in HP Pavilion dv9000/dv9100/dv9200/dv9400 notebooks.
HP was fixing this issue at no charge but not anymore. The warranty program has expired on May 31, 2009.

Make sure to use correct hinges. They are different for LCDs with single lamp and LCDs with dual lamp.
Somehow my Synaptics Touchpad on my Compaq V2000 (Model 2402) got zapped today and will not power on at all. This is different than the usual driver problem that makes you think it is turned off. I was tightening up a screw that is close to the pad itself while it was running and the notebook suddenly just turned off. Everything is fine but the touchpad will not power on. It was getting pretty useless regardless. I have been using a regular usb mouse most of the time for almost a year now but still need the touchpad for the obvious. ANyone here replace their pad? I haven't found one used or new yet.

I was thinking of making my own notebook cooler, one with a fan directly over the air intake.
I was wondering if too much air going into the intake will spoil the fan inside, kinda like the air is moving faster than the internal fan can handle.
