I saw so many guys talking about this question, so I opened my Envy 15 1011TX (i7 820m, 500GB HD, 8GB RAM) for a answer.
Please check the attached photo, there's ONLY 1 2.5" drive bay and 2 HDD connector onboard, so it's possible to hold 2 1.8" drive and build a RAID.
I am literally sitting at the HP checkout page and before I hit the purchase button I wanted to get an opinion on the dual SSD's. Is it worth it get two SSD drives or should I get SSD + 5400RPM drive combo?
My purchase price after tax, shipping, and the $300 coupon is $2300. If I opt for the combo my price goes down about $300. However, if it makes sense to have two SSD's then I will purchase the current configuration.
we're several interested in the HP Envy now that is has the dual ssd option, but noone seem to find any information on the manufacturer, type og specifications?. It is critical to know wether if the ssds have the TRIM abillity and wether they are second generation.
View 4 Replies View Relatedsince i experienced some major problems last weekend on my 8510p gb967ea win xp pro sp3 notebook, i am forced to reinstall the os and i thought this would be a good chance to replace the 5400rpm 160gb drive (sata), especially in order to try out win7 on a big enough partition.
now i called hp and they told me that the maximum possbile would be a 250gb 5400rpm drive or a 200gb 7200rpm drive (which is set inside bios). i definitely would upgrade to a 7200 rpm (if not to a velociraptor or an ssd), but for just a 40gb gain this wouldnt really be worth it, as i will get the new 8540p notebook as soon as they are released with windows 7 and some satisfying hardware (dx11 gpu!), if they get this hardware, which i hope..
so does anyone know whether i should try a bigger drive (i would go for at least a 250gb 7200rpm drive, better 320gb or 500gb) and maybe check compatibility while in the store in order to give it back if it doesnt work, or leave the 160gb 5400rpm drive and wait for the new models?
or is there any way to extend the compatibility restricted inside bios (using the most recent ver. f.15/dec 08 now)?

I have several brands of laptops and allover the years I tried more. The thing I am inquiring about here is the Sony harddisk.
I notice that in my TZ and FW series laptops the harddisk is always in operation (I hear it)
and the lamp ignites very frequent even when the computer is sitting still not doing anything
Is the optical bay on the Z555 modular? If so can anyone point me to a tray for substituting a 2.5inch HD for the DVD.

my Windows is not able to boot and I have to repair it with a Windows Vista DVD taken from another Dell (Desktop) PC. The installation is not able to detect a drive and so I am not able to select a Windows installation to repair. I need the drivers for the Harddisk (or controller) to add it to the repair process. The problem is that on the Driver support page only firmware for the hard drive is available but no .inf file that I need for the repait.
where I can find the .inf file or if it is possible to extract the file from the destroyed windows installation (via live-linux).
I have recently purchased a W540 and connected to my Dell u3011 30" monitor. I used the Dual Link DVI-D cable that came with the monitor and plugged it into my Ultra Dock. The maximum resolution i can get is 1920x1080? When i change over to a Display port cable i can achieve the full 2560 x 1600 resolution? Is there something i need to do in addition to achieve the full 2560x1600 resolution with the DVI-D dual link cable? I want to be able to connect 2 laptops to the one monitor and only have 1 display port input so i need to be able to use the DVI cable on the 2nd machine while still achieving 2560x1600 resolution.

I'm using a external LCD with a DVI->VGA converter plugged into the laptop. The LCD knows there's a signal as when I plug it in it just goes blank as opposed to the "no signal" screen.
However the laptop doesn't seem to detect it. When I go to graphics properties it says "Multiple Display, blah blah, please connect another display". And there's no tab for another monitor or anything.

There is NO mention about the RAM running in dual-channel.
In CPUZ, where I should see DUAL, the area is grayed out.
I know there is 2 sticks of Samsung DDR2-800 (2 slots and the platform is able to run dual-channel according to AMD).....
I'm looking at the Mi edition as it is cheaper. Would it be possible to partition the HD and dual boot XP Professional on the partition?

purchased a Compaq 6735s notebook. It came with Vista installed, but he wanted XP as that is what he is familiar with. Also wanted to have Vista to become familiar with that os. I partitioned the drive changed the SATA setting to IDE in CMOS and installed XP Home on the drive. On reboot it now defaults to XP but doesn't recognize the Network Controlller and several other "unknown devices" Of course I am unableto connect to the internet to download new drivers etc. So my questions are: What information is necessary to diagnose this problem? Where can I find that? (and) How can I choose between OS's at startup and avoid device compatibility issues?

I have an HP G60 that I was interested in possibly overclocking it. It has an AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-70 2.00GHz Processor in it. I was wondering if it is even possible to overclock it and if so how much would be a safe bet?

My issue is:
I'd like to try the beta of Windows 7, using the 2nd Hard Disk for that. I've been using it mainly for data backup, but as I have an external drive I guess I could make the 2nd dirsk free for trying Windows 7.
My reason for wanting to try Windows 7 is Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Some of my buddies tried it in Windows 7 and are reporting a noticeable performance increase.
When it comes to Laptops, and since this is my first one, I'm very reluctant to these moves - mainly because of the proprietary drivers... for instance, if I want to update my NVidia card drivers that must be made through HP and not through the regular channels - or so I think.
Questions:
Would it be possible to install Windows 7 on the 2nd Hard Disk and make it a Dual Boot system?
Would I have problems with HP-specific drivers?

1. What reason is there for the 800 dollar difference in price other than the beats headphones?
2.Does the back of the case only have the beats logo on it or is there any type of laser etching like on the original envy.

However, I was wondering if heat management and battery life has improved with driver- and BIOS updates over time.
In short, has any of the points of criticism that the Envy originally received been improved with driver and BIOS updates?
I'm shopping for laptops right now and I'm pretty much stuck between these two. My main question for the 14 is will it be able to do full hd? I know 1920x1080 is a bit much to ask for on a 14.5" screen but I haven't been able to find a solid answer for this question. The 14 has more features and the internal cd drive is a plus, but not a dealbreaker for the 15 since the cd drive isn't used too much. Taking out price, which one would be a better buy?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a couple of questions about the Envy v2. I'm certain the answers are somewhere in the massive owner's thread but it's way too long to want to go through at this point.
My questions are:
1) Audio quality of external speakers. Is there enough bass in them? Do they sound "tin-y"?
2) Noise from the fan when the GPU is in high use. How loud is the fan? Has anyone put a decibel meter to it?
3) Temp of the GPU. My Studio 15 is hitting a high of 70c when running and was wondering how the newer ATI is.
The first I heard about the Envy line was that it was a gorgeous laptop with a great display and above-average speakers. However, it was fundamentally flawed with a horrible trackpad and overheating issues(present in the 13, but further aggravated in the 15). After the spectacular fail of a release, I dropped the Envy out of consideration.
To the present, I've recently started looking at a huge array of laptops and have taken the Envy into consideration again. From what I've heard, the Envy 15 is in its second generation(I need a full-HD laptop and won't be considering the Envy 13). It now comes equipped with a i5 processor and the HD5830.............
