Sony :: Installing An X64 OS On My VGN-Z21WN/B
Jul 26, 2009I am currently running the Windows 7 RC1 beta on my VGN-Z21WN/B. It comes with 4GB RAM but from my understanding a 32 bit OS will only be able to use 3 GB of them. Also, the system actually has over 4GB since (at least im told) the RAM in the graphic card should also be added into the total amount.
Now you understand why I would like to use a x64 OS instead, so here comes my problem: Whenever I try to install one the computer gives me a BSOD and does a physical memory dump. The installation itself is no problem, but when I log in it crashes.
I have attempted with two different Win 7 RC1 x64 discs and a official Windows Vista x64 disc from Microsoft and the result is always the same.
After too many failed attempts I decided to give up and reload my old installation using the image tool (which works wonderful!) and now I am using Win 7 RC1 x86 again.

Aug 26, 2009I have a Z21WN (European version) and i have installed Windows 7. Everything runs smoothly and everything seems to be working in good order. But i do have a couple of problems that i was hoping someone in here perhaps could help me with;
1) When i start the machine (or reboot) the screen will flash for about 2-3 seconds when it reaches the login screen of windows (ie. the screen turns black as if there was no input), but then turns back to normal after the 2-3 seconds.
2) I use my laptop with an external 26" screen connected via HDMI - often i only use the external monitor and therefore keep the laptop closed after i have pressed the power button. But everytime i start the laptop i have to unplug the hdmi cable and wait for the laptop to be fully booted into windows before i can attach it again. If the hdmi cable is connected during boot both screens are just black/blank (ie like there is not input comming to nay of them). What could be causing this?
3) I have installed a OCZ Vertex 120GB in the laptop. Are there any tweaks i should be doing in reference to the Z? In device manager it is labeled as a "OCZ Vertex ATA Device" - does this sound right?
4) In the systems rating my graphics card is the one pulling the average down (4.4 average). Is it really so that the nvidia card should get no more than a score of 4.4?
5) I cant quite figure out how to enable the 3G modem option on the laptop in windows 7 - are there any special software ot something i need to enable it? I have installed a sim card in the slot.
6) I have installed the mousepad driver, but i cannot change the sensitivity of the pad (windows own does not do anything either) -

Apr 20, 2009I have several brands of laptops and allover the years I tried more. The thing I am inquiring about here is the Sony harddisk.
I notice that in my TZ and FW series laptops the harddisk is always in operation (I hear it)
and the lamp ignites very frequent even when the computer is sitting still not doing anything

Oct 26, 2009I saw so many guys talking about this question, so I opened my Envy 15 1011TX (i7 820m, 500GB HD, 8GB RAM) for a answer.
Please check the attached photo, there's ONLY 1 2.5" drive bay and 2 HDD connector onboard, so it's possible to hold 2 1.8" drive and build a RAID.

Sep 7, 2009since i experienced some major problems last weekend on my 8510p gb967ea win xp pro sp3 notebook, i am forced to reinstall the os and i thought this would be a good chance to replace the 5400rpm 160gb drive (sata), especially in order to try out win7 on a big enough partition.
now i called hp and they told me that the maximum possbile would be a 250gb 5400rpm drive or a 200gb 7200rpm drive (which is set inside bios). i definitely would upgrade to a 7200 rpm (if not to a velociraptor or an ssd), but for just a 40gb gain this wouldnt really be worth it, as i will get the new 8540p notebook as soon as they are released with windows 7 and some satisfying hardware (dx11 gpu!), if they get this hardware, which i hope..
so does anyone know whether i should try a bigger drive (i would go for at least a 250gb 7200rpm drive, better 320gb or 500gb) and maybe check compatibility while in the store in order to give it back if it doesnt work, or leave the 160gb 5400rpm drive and wait for the new models?
or is there any way to extend the compatibility restricted inside bios (using the most recent ver. f.15/dec 08 now)?
Dell Studio 1537 :: HardDisk Not Detected In Windows Repair Mode?
Jan 23, 2013my Windows is not able to boot and I have to repair it with a Windows Vista DVD taken from another Dell (Desktop) PC. The installation is not able to detect a drive and so I am not able to select a Windows installation to repair. I need the drivers for the Harddisk (or controller) to add it to the repair process. The problem is that on the Driver support page only firmware for the hard drive is available but no .inf file that I need for the repait.
where I can find the .inf file or if it is possible to extract the file from the destroyed windows installation (via live-linux).

May 26, 2010I have been having a bit of a nightmare with Sony support. Basically, when my laptop first arrived, my F7 key always looked a bit "off" - the backlight under it always seemed brighter, and it was slightly raised on one side, but I ignored it - how often does anyone use F7?
Anyway, I was cleaning the keyboard because it has that stupid type of keyboard that picks up every bit of oil (drives me mad!) and the F7 key just came off. It wasn't even a harsh cleaning

Mar 24, 2010where I can find a service manual or instructions on how to get inside a VAIO TZ37? I'm looking for options to replace the 120GB HDD with a 128GB (or bigger) SSD. I understand the 120GB HDD is PATA but not sure how many pins the connector has.
I know I can just unscrew the bottom and have a look but I prefer to find out a bit more before attempting that. My past experience in trying to get inside a Z505R was very frustrating as the screws were hidden under a few snapped in clips, they were very difficult to get off without breaking them (without the proper knowledge or tools).
Also while I am asking questions, here are couple more ...
1. Is it absolutely not possible to go beyond the 2GB memory limit?
2. Are there Windows 7 drivers available for TZ37?
3. If so, is it worthwhile upgrading from Vista Biz to Windows 7 on the TZ37?
I have been thinking about the X series but with its Atom CPU and lack of DVD/RW, it's kinda like a very very expensive netbook. So I think it would be better investment to beef up my TZ37 with a SSD. I have been very happy with it once it's booted up and ready, it's just that Vista takes years to boot time the 4200rpm HDD. My work around has been putting it to sleep 95% of time and only power off/on when I absolutely have to or when it has crashed big time. The wake up from sleep is very quick, so that's the saving grace of its slow HDD.

On another note - I heard you're suppose make a new connector for the hard drive because the Sony Z uses microSATA or uSATA or something like that for their optical drives. There isn't a connector that you can readily purchase now.

I was wondering would this give extra battery life if I bought it? I think the battery shipped with the Vaio is 3500mah but this new one is 5000mah. How many extra hours would it give? Just wondering if it is worth it or not.
Also is the battery for the 15.5" screen size E series or the other sizes?

However, the keyboard 'came-away' from the rest of the latop so fast upon lifting it up I did not get a real chance to see how it actually connects to the laptop.

Apr 19, 2009I contacted Sony support about the keyboard color; I was going to change the color of my system to white so I could have the white keyboard (and I really started liking the color).
Unfortunately, it was too far along in the process (even though it was backordered and not shipping til the end of April) to modify the order.
It isn't really worth the trouble, in my opinion, to wait for the notebook, return it, and wait another two or three weeks for the white one

Mar 7, 2010I replaced the 40 GB hard drive that came with my VGN-B100B with a Western Digital 250 GB drive. When I installed Windows XP Professional on it, the partition was only 127 GB. The WD drive is a PATA, which I understand to be synonymous with EIDE, which should work on this computer. Is there a limit to how large a hard drive this computer will recognize?

Apr 4, 2009I am trying to replace my laptop fan in a Sony Vaio VGN-S270. I removed all the necessary screws and plugs to get to the fan, but there are three screws connecting the fan which I'm not sure how to remove. Two of them are located on the lower left of the fan and are gold in color. They appear to be spring-loaded and have a threaded center to the screw. This seems to be an extension of the fan itself and covers one of the chips.
The other screw is very small and is located up and to the left of the actual fan portion. This screw looks to have a circular head to it, but its so small I can't really tell what type of tool to use for it.
