Sony :: Installing An X64 OS On My VGN-Z21WN/B

Jul 26, 2009

I am currently running the Windows 7 RC1 beta on my VGN-Z21WN/B. It comes with 4GB RAM but from my understanding a 32 bit OS will only be able to use 3 GB of them. Also, the system actually has over 4GB since (at least im told) the RAM in the graphic card should also be added into the total amount.

Now you understand why I would like to use a x64 OS instead, so here comes my problem: Whenever I try to install one the computer gives me a BSOD and does a physical memory dump. The installation itself is no problem, but when I log in it crashes.

I have attempted with two different Win 7 RC1 x64 discs and a official Windows Vista x64 disc from Microsoft and the result is always the same.

After too many failed attempts I decided to give up and reload my old installation using the image tool (which works wonderful!) and now I am using Win 7 RC1 x86 again.

Sony :: VAIO Z21WN + W7

Aug 26, 2009

I have a Z21WN (European version) and i have installed Windows 7. Everything runs smoothly and everything seems to be working in good order. But i do have a couple of problems that i was hoping someone in here perhaps could help me with;

1) When i start the machine (or reboot) the screen will flash for about 2-3 seconds when it reaches the login screen of windows (ie. the screen turns black as if there was no input), but then turns back to normal after the 2-3 seconds.

2) I use my laptop with an external 26" screen connected via HDMI - often i only use the external monitor and therefore keep the laptop closed after i have pressed the power button. But everytime i start the laptop i have to unplug the hdmi cable and wait for the laptop to be fully booted into windows before i can attach it again. If the hdmi cable is connected during boot both screens are just black/blank (ie like there is not input comming to nay of them). What could be causing this?

3) I have installed a OCZ Vertex 120GB in the laptop. Are there any tweaks i should be doing in reference to the Z? In device manager it is labeled as a "OCZ Vertex ATA Device" - does this sound right?

4) In the systems rating my graphics card is the one pulling the average down (4.4 average). Is it really so that the nvidia card should get no more than a score of 4.4?

5) I cant quite figure out how to enable the 3G modem option on the laptop in windows 7 - are there any special software ot something i need to enable it? I have installed a sim card in the slot.

6) I have installed the mousepad driver, but i cannot change the sensitivity of the pad (windows own does not do anything either) -

Sony :: Installing A New Fan On A S480

Jun 4, 2009

my fan recently died on my S480, I ordered a replacement fan and the Sony Agent wouldn't give me any information on how to replace the fan, how to install the fan (which I declined).

I've opened up my laptop many times (replaced my hard drive recently), and I'm comfortable playing around the internals. But I have no clue how to take this fan out. It looks like there is only one screw and the rest is either glued to the circuit board or something.

Sony :: Installing Windows XP

Feb 10, 2010

Model : SONY VAIO FS740/W

PhoenixBIOS Setting
1. BIOS Version : R0084J1
2. EC BIOS Version : RK084J1
3. IDE Channel 0 Master : 80GB (TOSHIBA)
4. IDE Channel 0 Slave : CD/DVD (SONY DVD DW-Q58A)
5. Boot Options:
Optical Drive
Floppy Disk Drive -> Y-E DATA USB-FDU-(USB)
Hard Disk Drive -> TOSHIBA MK8025GAS-(PM)

I formatted my laptop HDD by connnecting it as an external HDD to another laptop and did start -> control panel - > Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> storage -> Disk Management: Delete Partition and Format my HDD.

My internal DVD writer is not reading DVD. DVD writer is attempting to read DVD, I can see lights, I can hear the sound of disk spinning. After 2-3 seconds of attempting to read DVD it stops and starts again. this happens over and over till I remove the DVD.

I have an external USB DVD writer(it works) which is not detecting at bootup. I was counting on that to install XP. I have an external USB floppy drive - it gets detected at bootup

When I start my computer I get "Operating System not found"(of course). I have a XP installation cd. I tried making a USB stick boot XP installation - not detecting USB stick at startup. I also looked at BIOS settings to enable USB - I don't see any such feature

1) How can I enable BIOS to detect my external USB DVD writer?
2) How can I install XP?

Been nosing around the forum to try to find the answer before asking, but i really couldn't find any, so here goes!

I just got a new 7200rpm 320gb from WD to replace my old drive . I replaced it, boot the laptop (VGN-CR31S) as usual,

and put the first recovery DVD in the tray. Unfortunately, when it gets to the options menu,

I can't get it to install, it keeps asking for the right volume or cd/dvd. I thought the recovery dvds would be able to install everything from scratch ..

Sony :: Installing A SSD In A SR Series Notebook, Will This Work

Apr 6, 2009

I'd really like a SSD drive as I need speed over storage. So I'm wondering if it possible to install a SSD drive in a Vaio SR laptop. What do I do about drivers?

I have my choices down between a Lenovo X301 with a SSD and a Vaio SR210 without a SSD. I like the looks of the Vaio better, but I'm willing to pay for a SSD premium.

If anyone has had any success installing a SSD in a Vaio laptop(where SSD's are not an option) I'd love to hear about it?

Just received my new CTO Z-690 today with vista home premium (64 bit), and to save a little on cost, bought an OEM Vista Ult 64bit separately.

Now I'd like to install vista ultimate instead and i just want to make sure i have the steps right.

1. backup/create recovery disks just in case something messes up.

2. install vista ultimate, wiping out everything

3. install drivers from sony's website

lastly, 2 questions
1) since my current drivers are for vista home premium, i will have to download new ones regardless right?

2) is there anything else that i should be doing?

3. Install Win 7 on SSD

Is there an easier way to do it? Any more pitfalls to avaoid? Thanks!

the only Win 7 key that I have is the upgrade Vista to Win 7. Am I correct that retail/all versions install Win 7 disk will not let me use this key?

Sony :: Installing 32-bit Windows 7 On Z720D (originally 64-bit Vista)

Aug 1, 2009

I purchased a ready-to-go VGN-Z720D from Sony, and their bloatware is, well, horrible, so i figured that would be as good a time as any to do a clean install AND run Windows 7 RC1.

Problem is, most of the utilities/programs listed earlier in the "Windows 7 on Vaio Z" thread are not available from in 32-bit flavor for this particular model.

I've tried to use 32-bit drivers from the Z690 on my Z720, but Sony does enforce model restrictions within its package

Sony :: Opening Photos On SR Takes Forever After Installing IE8

Apr 21, 2009

My 3-month old Sony Vaio SR laptop is taking an age to open up photos - and I think it was since I installed IE8.

Since the window boxes within Windows Vista are run using IE technology, I am thinking it is to blame?

So when I open a photo in a photo album, it takes about 8 seconds to open. The photo sizes are only around 1mb each. Once the first photo is opened, I can browse to the next photo quite quickly. But if I close the picture window down and open another, it takes another 8 seconds to load up the photo.

HP/Compaq :: Installing OS

Jan 19, 2009

I recently recieved HP dv5-1119nr as a gift for Christmas. It has a Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit OS. I am a DJ and Use Numarks Virtual Vinyl audio Interface which is for my turntables. I have no complaints with the notebook. Unfortunately, the interface is not compatible with 64-Bit, and according to Numark may not be anytime soon. I had a friend upload his Vista 32-Bit OS for me to download, as a matter of fact he sent me two to choose from. I have (frustratingly) tried multple times to burn and re-install a 32-Bit system. I have tried using Cyberlink DVD Suite to save the .iso file (I understand that). It shows up looking like a winrar file, but in properties it does say .iso. Once burn is finished I try to reboot. Under BIOS, CD Drive is enabled and first. But it doesn't Boot! Upon looking at the disc it shows 2 files; BOOTCTG.BIN and BOOTIMG.BIN. What am I doing wrong?

Dell :: Installing A New HD For The First Time

Sep 24, 2007

I have an Inspiron 700m of which I am the original owner. I just ordered a new Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 80GB 7200rpm drive. I have only done one OS install prior to this when I assembled a desktop PC but that was several years ago and I was following an online guide (MySuperPC) virtually step-by-step.

I have contacted Dell and they sent me a reinstall copy of the OS (XP Home) on CD.

My biggest concern is partitioning. I'm really not clear on what this is all about or how I should go about doing this. I've had one person tell me not to partition at all. Another tell me to make it 50%-50% and another tell me to make a 5GB partition just for the OS.

This a basic email, web browsing, document reading type of machine that I use when I'm traveling.

I can follow to install the OS onto my new hard drive? I've seen a few, but they seem to be more geared toward recovery type reinstallations and several seem geared more toward "power users."
