Sony :: E Series Battery Replacement
May 31, 2010
My new Sony Vaio I ordered will be arriving soon. I did some research and the main criticism about the new laptop appears to be the short battery life.
I saw this battery on amazon for the Sony Vaio E series. Link
I was wondering would this give extra battery life if I bought it? I think the battery shipped with the Vaio is 3500mah but this new one is 5000mah. How many extra hours would it give? Just wondering if it is worth it or not.
Also is the battery for the 15.5" screen size E series or the other sizes?

I had replaced mobo on my dead SZ 4 series (don't ask why) and couldn't stop there since I was in the move thus consequently contemplated about possible upgrades. For now I settled for fan, WLAN card and CPU upgrade. If it works well, I might install SSD also.
1.Fan Modification
As you all proud SZ owners know, fan is very noisy on this machines so it made me think if there is any possible modification to reduce the noise. Since the BIOS is controlling it there is not much to do on the RPM part (in win at least, but more on that later) I settled for a fan and fan casing swap from SZ 4 to SZ 7 series.
In the photos you can see that fans, fan casings and heat-sinks are of different design. Besides design differences, voltage and the amperage are the same, 5V-300mA.
Only way was to install the fan and the casing of the SZ 7 heat-sink to my old one as one of the heat-sinks bolt bushings is off for a few millimeters.
There has to be some care exercised when prying off the fan casing, some heating was required from the aluminium side on three pins were casing is attached.
Not to be simple, the difference is also in the inlet hole. One on the SZ 7 heat-sink is bigger and off centre compared to SZ 4s. Had to do some filing there, to match it to the size of the new fan. Fan of SZ7 is not bigger, it is due to different design of the fan eye and its volutes...................

I'm willing to buy a large capacity battery for my new Z series, but I don't want to pay much, as I will be carrying it around only for emergency situations.

My Dad has an XPS laptop (I think it's a 13", but I don't know which model exactly) that needs a new battery. I've never had to buy a replacement battery.
Just curious if anyone knows of good aftermarket replacements, or if OEM is the way to go.

i saw that there are 3 available processors on sony z series.
1 - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz)
2 - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8800 (2.66GHz)
3 - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P9700 (2.80GHz)
the 3 processors will give me enough power, but i travel a lot, and i care a lot about the batter life, so which one is better for the battery life on z series?
hardware configuration to get the longest possible battery life?

I forgot my Z-series plugged in AC ( switched off ofcourse) for about a month or 3 weeks. I am so terrified that this might have affected the battery life? The laptop is brand new that makes me more upset

I went to the Dell website the other day to check out if there were any updates for my system, as my CD drive was not working. I ran my service tag, which did not help my drive problem (which I will touch up on in a bit) but did notice that it said my BIOS needed to be updated, the urgency level is optional (so I'm assuming it's not all that important). So, I downloaded the file and went to run it, but got a message stating something like both my charger had to be plugged in and battery had to be charge before it would flash the bios.
I thought that was weird, so I did some investigating. First thing I did was go into the device manager to see if it would even show the battery, which it did, without any errors. I scratched my head a bit, and then went into the setup menu (pushed F2 at startup) and went to look for battery info. It showed that there was no recognized battery nor was there a recognized charger.
I remembered that my laptop had been shutting off (just going completely black) for no reason, which told me two things; that my battery in fact was dead and also that there was a problem with the charger. I went to look at the charger, and noticed it was frayed at the connector.
I replaced the charger, and my computer quit shutting off on its own. However, it still was not recognizing the battery. In the device manager it is still showing a fully functional battery, and in the startup menu it is still not showing any battery, yet it now shows the charger.
I forgot to mention that I have also replaced the battery. Both the new and old batteries did show that they were fully charged when the new AC adapter was installed, I checked by pushing the button on the battery its self and got 4 green lights. Oh, these are genuine Dell batteries and the computer will run on battery power alone.
I have found a few ways to flash the BIOS without the battery, but this sounds a bit too risky.
So, here are my questions:
1) What the heck do I do about my battery? Sure, it's just a minor annoyance that I can't see the charge in the system tray, but it's also starting to drive me nuts simply because it's a problem I cannot seem to solve.
2) Right now my BIOS version is A04. Dell wants me to install A17. This seems like a huge jump, and not knowing all that much about BIOS, I am not sure if this would even be a good idea to upgrade. What do you think? The frustrating thing is that from what I've read I need to update my BIOS in order to get my comp to read the battery (or this is one likely solution), but I cannot update the BIOS without the computer recognizing the battery. Catch 22...
3) Off topic, but the problem which brought me to my current battery/BIOS situation. My CD drive is shot. I took it out and checked to make sure all ribbons were properly in place and looked good, cleaned the lens, etc, but like a moron I ripped one of the ribbons, so now it truly is trash. Does anybody know of an inexpensive, yet reliable DVD-R/RW (not just CD-RW) drive for sale that will work with my system?
Information that may be important (let me know if I need to post more):
Dell Inspiron E1505
Windows XP Pro, SP3
BIOS Version A04
Original Dell Battery and AC Adapter.

I was interested in purchasing a new battery for my Dell XPS M1530, and I'm interested in the 7200mAh/80Whr 9 CELL! Replacement Laptop Battery For Dell XPS M1530 RU006 TK330-SKU:LE3.
I was wondering if the original battery charger provided with my laptop will be compatible with this battery for charging it?

I've had my Dell XPS for over a year and a half now. No complaints with the system, especially after upgrading to Windows 7, but now I need a new battery.
The 9 cell and 6 cell that I originally bought with the system have been depleted so much that even with the laptop plugged in, the battery will not charge and obviously, both are way beyond the warranty date.
which leaves me with no other option but to purchase a new battery.
I checked out the dell website and the prices of their the replacement batteries is ridiculous.
Plus all the reviews that are posted up there, echo the same sentiment, the the battery will die after a year and will no longer be able to be charged with the AC adapter.

Several times I charge the laptop to full and turn it off. When I turn it back on moments later, it shows the battery at 75-80% and it always does this.
I call up customer service (only to find out that they are a bunch of retards because they always refer to their "manual") and they say that this is normal. Which I think is total bs, because they specifically state 3-4 hours of battery life

I've had eye on Z Series for couple days, but there exists a mystery I couldn't figure it out.
I've searched this forum and the net, still no answers.
On the sony's official USA website (www.sony.com)
Sony claims VGN-Z790 CTO has upto 7.5 hours of standard battery life.
However, other preconfigured Z Series laptop such as VGN-Z790DND, VGN-Z798Y/X, VGN-790DLX, VGN-790DKX, VGN-Z790DMR, and/or VGN-720D/B has upto 6 hours of standard battery life. It's mystery I was unable to figure out.
what's difference between Z790 and Z720? (I mean fundamental differences like circuitry design or expansion limitations such as maximum ram support and so. Couldn't figure this out... probably one of those model number decryption wizard would know it.)

I have a Dell Latitude E6510. I recently bought an off-brand replacement battery to replace my two year old battery that came with the laptop. The new one is a 12 cell battery whereas the old one is a 6 cell battery. I put the battery in just fine and it booted up perfectly. Its weird because on the bottom right of the monitor, it says there is no battery detected and yet I am able to run my laptop without having the power cord plugged in. I have uninstalled the battery drivers and that did not fix it. I am currently letting my battery die in hopes that will fix it.
This is the link to the battery I bought.

Also, upon plugging the new battery in, no matter what I do, whether it be charge it with the power cord or let it run off the battery, the battery icon on the hardware of my computer blinks yellow/orange 4 times and then blue once and keeps repeating that.

I replaced dc jack by following hardware repair manual, but the laptop is not starting(zero response on pressing power button) afterwards. When ac adapter is connected, the battery light blinks three time, showing connection made. My suspicion is damaged key board or could be mother board. Does standby battery has anything to do with starting up computer?

I would like to ask about the Lenovo Energy Management software bundled with my Z400. Regarding the Energy Management > Battery > "Optimized Battery Health" in particular. When the battery charges until 60%, does it internally disconnect the charger from my battery? The Power icon in the System Tray says "Plugged in, not charging". Or does the software stops the charging until 60%, and when it lowers the software allows it  to recharge again? I'm worried about getting my battery worn out immediately, as I leave my charger plugged in most of the time.

My 2 day old Lenovo Y510P laptop has a problem with charging. I noticed the battery was never going above 60% charged. I left it plugged in for over 24 hours and nothing changed. So I decided to completely drain the battery and used the laptop until it died. With the laptop off I left it plugged in until the battery LED turned white which indicates the battery is fully charged. Unfortunately the battery still shows 60% charged.

I have an XPS m1330 (T7500, 3 GB RAM, 8400M GS GPU) and had a bad 6-cell battery that wasn't holding charge.
Dell sent me a replacement, but they've sent me a 9-cell which I don't want b/c it's heavy, adds bulk and most importantly, the angle on the laptop REALLY hurts my wrists... but apparently they won't send out 6-cells as replacements anymore, just 9-cells.
I'm wondering if there's anything I can tell them to get them to send me a 6-cell without having to put my 9-cell on ebay or something .....

I've written a SR240 CPU Replacement Guide. It covers disassembly, cpu replacement and reassembly.
It is in PDF format, 15 pages long, about 2.4MB in size. It would probably work for most SR2XX series notebooks, and maybe others as well.

and first of all sorry as there seem to be loads and lots of ssd threads already.
I just couldn't find any specific on that model.
Is the z11 the same as the z520?
My boss wanted to buy a new laptop (office work only) and I adviced against it, because I think the hardware of the z11 is still VERY fast.
The bottleneck is the old 5400rpm hard drive.

I've a Vaio TT that I'm (or was) fairly happy with, and before that I had the TX and the TZ.
I would however like to replace the TT since the Blu-ray has stopped working for the second time and I just refuse to pay an insane amount of $ to have it fixed. The question is, - Replace it with what?

I have been having a bit of a nightmare with Sony support. Basically, when my laptop first arrived, my F7 key always looked a bit "off" - the backlight under it always seemed brighter, and it was slightly raised on one side, but I ignored it - how often does anyone use F7?
Anyway, I was cleaning the keyboard because it has that stupid type of keyboard that picks up every bit of oil (drives me mad!) and the F7 key just came off. It wasn't even a harsh cleaning

where I can find a service manual or instructions on how to get inside a VAIO TZ37? I'm looking for options to replace the 120GB HDD with a 128GB (or bigger) SSD. I understand the 120GB HDD is PATA but not sure how many pins the connector has.
I know I can just unscrew the bottom and have a look but I prefer to find out a bit more before attempting that. My past experience in trying to get inside a Z505R was very frustrating as the screws were hidden under a few snapped in clips, they were very difficult to get off without breaking them (without the proper knowledge or tools).
Also while I am asking questions, here are couple more ...
1. Is it absolutely not possible to go beyond the 2GB memory limit?
2. Are there Windows 7 drivers available for TZ37?
3. If so, is it worthwhile upgrading from Vista Biz to Windows 7 on the TZ37?
I have been thinking about the X series but with its Atom CPU and lack of DVD/RW, it's kinda like a very very expensive netbook. So I think it would be better investment to beef up my TZ37 with a SSD. I have been very happy with it once it's booted up and ready, it's just that Vista takes years to boot time the 4200rpm HDD. My work around has been putting it to sleep 95% of time and only power off/on when I absolutely have to or when it has crashed big time. The wake up from sleep is very quick, so that's the saving grace of its slow HDD.
