Is it easy to add RAM and change the HD?
For $1450, is this a good deal? I'd really like an internal Blu-ray drive, but that's not possible. I have a spare SSD I can swap in and I'd buy more RAM off of newegg.

My m15x had hinge issues and my M17x had stuttering issues, so what can I expect from the ENVY 15?
I received my envy 15 yesterday and tried clean install once.
Problem is that the touchpad didn't work if I used any of the old drivers even the one from HDD. Three version, one from HDD, two from the thread.
But with the newest driver [url],'double tap to disable touchpad' doesn't work well.
It can be disabled by double tap but can't be enabled again.
I have to enable the touchpad from the config page.
Actually I want to use the originally version from HDD.
I want to use the feature of designating different functions of three corner.
I have been looking and saving to build a $2000 desktop and then I ran into this beast of a machine the Envy15. Now I will be using it mainly for school whihc is 3d apps, CAD, works, everything and anything I can get my hands one including playing some WoW and the new COD here or there. I mainly work at school so I figured lugging a desktop around wouldnt work.
My question to you all is this Envy really a desktop replacement? How well will it perform with that Radeon 4830 1GB card? Without factoring in my traveling to school, would it be wiser to spend the money on a desktop or the Envy?
I tied looking elsewhere seems many people have this issue?

I will be buying a new laptop to replace my Acer Aspire 5738G.
I am considering HP Dv8t Quad Core i7 or HP Probook 4720s.

I want to upgrade my old laptop to something nice, and am torn between to systems.
An HDX 16 with:
2.40 Ghz dual core duo ( P8600 chip )
6 gigs of ram
OR...
An HXD 18 with
2.0 Ghz QUAD core ( QX9000 chip )
4 gigs of ram
both systems have the same video card ( Nvidia with 512megs of ram ) 500 gig hard drive.
What would be the faster machine for doing video ? and what would be the overall faster machine ?
I realize that not all applications will take advantage of a quad-core chip like the QX900, so this is why I"m asking. if the dual-core P8600 chip @ 2.40 Ghz in the HP HDX 16 with that 6 gigs of ram will actually be faster overall than the quad core would be, and perhaps even be faster at rendering video ?
regarding new laptops in regards to your choice of the two.......

if the hp hdx is good for gaming ?
Here are the specs im getting
the single video card ( only available )
130m
4gb ddr3 memory
quad core processor
Crysis is an afterthought, so just the regular other games . I had a sager with
2gb ddr3 m
2.5 dual core
and 8800 gtx, and ran all the other game almost greatly except far cry 2, which had a bit of frame rate, and crysis . But I could play both at high, far cry 2 without any frame rate, but crysis with a bit .
I am seriously considering buying DV2 with following configuration:
MD Athlon™ Neo Processor for Ultrathin Notebooks MV-404096MB DDR2 System Memory (1 Dimm)320GB (5400RPM) Hard Drive (SATA), SuperMulti 8x DVD+-R/RW DriveGenuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit with Service Pack 112.1" Diagonal WXGA High-Definition (8) HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800), ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3410 Graphics
90% of my PC use would be internet browsing, photoshop elements editing and rarely watching some normal dvd movies.
Will this configuration be good enough for this, or I *must* consider dual core.
i have a hp dv5t with a 2 ghz intel T5800 and a Nvidia 9600 512 mb gpu. I was just wondering what good temperatures for this computer are, because im trying to be really cautious with this computer since my last one broke. Also is there anything I can do to reduce temperatures other than cooler? I have one but doesn't seem to do much. and by good temps i mean temps that might necessarily make the computer fry but i dont want to put undue stress on it either.

On notebookcheck, 5830 on Hp Envy is higher than 230M but I saw Ati 5830 is bad.
I have used 230M on DV6 i7 and it is good to play Call of Duty 6.

My Envy15-3000 notebook freezes while starting up. It only makes it to the Starting Windows screen then Microsoft icons stop moving. This has been going on since Tuesday (8/12). I ran checks and the memory and harddrive (quick and full) tests came back positive - i.e. no problems. I finally decided to reformat it yesterday (8/14). It gets all the way through the reformatting process until it wants to start the system for the "first time" (I imagine that this will be the last time it restarts in the recovery process) and still freezes on the Starting Windows screen. If I try to hard shut off and try any other boot up option I can think of (Safe Mode, etc.) it says Recovery Failed and asks me to retry, get details or Save Log. When I retry, it goes back to the freezing. As such, I am now in a seemingly endless loop of retrying the recover to get to the freezing start windows screen.
Â
All I want to do is wipe the hard drive and reload everything. I'm not interested in recovering the old data as I have everything backed up. I got no error messages in my Run it, Memory, etc tests, so I am at a loss as to how to proceed.
Â
I have the original drive recovery/windows 7 DVDs that came with the system.Â
I bought the Acer 1410 with the single core SU3500 Core 2 Solo CPU. It looks like Acer decided to release them with the SU2300 now, which is dual core at 1.2GHz (compared with 1.4GHz of SU3500).
Does anyone have any benchmarks comparing the two, and/or if they have a solid understanding how much better it would perform compared with the SU3500? I also see that the single core AS1410 with Celeron M @ 1.3GHz sells at the same price as the dual core.

upgrading my Aspire 5570 notebook more than a year ago. This time, I’m feeling lucky to share some of my experiences about how I finally upgraded my CPU from a Core Solo T1350Core 2 Duo T7200.
Again, thanks to everybody here in Notebookreview forum especially adinu, hoggie, Mack1982, TehSuigi, krazyphire and bigozone for their insights and knowledge that helps me a lot throughout the whole process. So, let’s get started!
Pre-upgrading
Please refer to these post before you start. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble later on.
Upgraded Acer 3680 Celeron CPU to a T5300!
Aspire 5315 CPU Step-by-Step Upgrade Guide
What you’ll need :Your new CPU (make sure it's compatible with your system ie; socket, FSB)Latest BIOS from Acer (upgraded to 1.3505 or latest)A good thermal paste (I would recommend Tuniq TX-2 or Arctic Silver 5 as well)Basic tools (screwdrivers, forceps, kitchen paper)Body static discharger (I would definitely recommend this as a precaution)Some alcohol, ear buds, sand paper grid 600,1200 & 2000 (optional for heat sink lapping)Lastly TIME and PATIENCE (you’ll be needing these a lot definitely!)When you’re ready, lets get our hands dirty.
How to disassemble your notebook?
I found out a very good video tutorial on how to disassemble my Aspire notebook on YouTube. So please take your time to view it and follow step by step as shown to help you to go through the process.
Lapping your heat sink (optional)
Although it’s not necessary, but I would recommend this process as another way to improve heat dissipation on your newly installed CPU. Refer to this page for detailed instructions.
The simple process:Clean your heat sink from old thermal paste residues with alcohol or equivalent of it using ear buds and kitchen papers.Apply a 600-grid sandpaper to smoothen the heat sink surface which comes into contact with your CPU.Repeat the process again with a 1200-gid sand paper until you’re satisfied. Finally, finish up by applying a 2000-grid sand paper to give you an almost mirror-finished surface. Wipe clean any dirt and residues left.....................................

I'm looking for an 18.4" / nVidia GTX / Core i7 notebook; So far the HP HDX18t has been the most impressive notebook that I've found and have been interested in -- barring the CPU. Does anyone know if there's any plans for a Core i7 HDX18 notebook anytime soon?

They have everything in common except the processor.
2005ax has AMD Turion™ II M500 2.20GHz 1MB L2 cache
1308tx has ntel® Core™2 Duo T6600 2.20 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB

View 10 Replies View RelatedI want to disable Ctrl+Shift+S, which opens HP's System Information window. I know it's not Windows' 'coz I didn't have a problem when I had a clean installation, but since I just used HP's recovery CDs, now I'm stuck with that stupid "feature". I called HP and the representative said that keystrokes couldn't be disabled but it turned out he didn't even understand me and make that up, apparently.
Is there a way I can delete certain key combinations from the Reg Editor or something like that. I wish I had done a clean installation but now I don't really have the time to do it.
as I know, the core i5 envy 15 is unavailable for canadians.
i am aware that there are companies that ship out US products to foreign markets.
what i am looking for is some names of these companies and under which conditions HP will honor a warranty in canada from a US-bought laptop.
my plan is to buy an 8530w and swap out the cpu for a Q9100 Quad Core. Anyway, is there special cooling needed for the quad core? I asked only because i noticed that if I tried to add a quad core on the HP website it requires a 'special' graphics card. This got me thinking that they might have added something for the quad cores that they leave out of the normal ones.

Aside from the fact thats free and all, my real concern if it will yield better gaming performance and battery life.
A lot of people don't know which processor to get so check out this great video. He really does an excellent job comparing the 2. Helped me decide that the core i5 was better for what I need. There is not much difference between the GPU's vram according to the benchmarks.
