how much a CDROM weighs? It might sound retarded, but is there anyway you can take the CD-ROM out of the laptop to shave some weight off?
Though, if it only weighs like 0.05pds, I rather not of course.
I'm seeking feedback on a lightweight replacement for an Inspiron 1300 I once had. Something if I needed to use I could use while propped up in bed, nothing heavier than my old Inspiron 1300 which I don't know exactly how heavy it was but I need to replace it with another laptop, possible one lighter than my Inspiron 1300 which I would be using most of the time for web surfing and email. I know the lighter the laptops are the more expensive they are.

For those who have used both computers, does the XPS Studio 13 seem much heavier and more burdensome for carrying around than the m1330? I love the 1330 and am saddened that its successor model is not as light
I bought an Acer Aspire 6930g a while ago and realized it had really, really weak gaming performance. I never cared much but a friend recently got a recently spec'd asus which does considerably better than my Acer.
I have a 2.53ghz Core 2 Duo 2 T9400, 4gb DDR2 RAM and a 512mb 6900GS. In games like Bioshock I have to play it with all the settings on low at 1024x768 to get anywhere near acceptable performance (30 to 60fps, still drops down to 20fps in some places). The strange part is that if I make everything high the performance doesn't drop that significantly, between about 20 and 30fps.
I have the latest laptop nvidia drivers and umm, well I dunno what else should I be doing to get better performance?
I read that the Sony X is 1.6 lbs.
What is the ACTUAL weight of the Sony extended battery that runs it about 9 hours? The native battery without the extended runs under 3 hours so the extended is probably a necessity.
I know there are a couple of 3x00 Vostro threads, but some are very long and the other did not seem to have an answer for this question.
First, I am very interested in this new Vostro. It seems a good configuration and design for the price. I especially love the 17" screen at < 6 lbs. Seems too good to be true.
Does anyone have experience with this machine? Is the weight including the battery and everything? It is a pound lighter than the 16" Sony F I am using. I like the F, but this Vostro seems a little more in line for me (PhD, heavy stats and datasets). My wife woul appropriate the Sony if I were to pull the trigger on the Dell.
Also, the i5-520m to i7-???qm (dual to quad, differing clocks and all). I am thinking the i5 may be the way to go. Most of my stuff is not designed for 4-cores, 8 threads, etc.

I don't really get why no other companies out there tried to beat the size and weight set by macbook air. I know many sacrifices were made when macbook air was designed 2 years ago, but I thought years later companies would have designed notebooks/netbooks of similar or smaller size without making too much sacrifice. what is the reason no one tries to beat this? all the notebooks out there are still at least 1 inch.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSince updating the firmware on my LG drive (GSA-T50L) on every restart I get a message that Windows (Vista Home Basic) cannot install the driver. I click the second option, which is to "remind me later." I have to do this every time I boot up. The CD ROM is actually working OK as far as I can tell, but I'm still getting the error message. Device Manager doesn't list any driver, and trying to update it through device manager is unsuccessful.
I'm using firmware rev. SC05. I wondered if downgrading back to SC04 would cure the problem, but after hundreds of searches I cannot find the firmware anywhere on the Internet. Why it's so rare, I have no idea.
Maybe the problem has been caused by myself -- I deleted the drivers folder from the recovery partition some time ago to gain a couple of GB of drive space. However, I was under the impression that the CDROM uses Windows' own driver, so maybe this isn't the problem? I'm absolutely stumped. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this issue?
FWIW, I have recovery discs, only I'm unsure about using them because I don't want to wipe the entire system and start from scratch. If it's possible to restore only the missing drivers folder from the recovery partition this might be a good start.
I decided to reformat and reinstall windows, mainly because I was having a few harddrive issues... my internal cdrom doesn't work, so I've been using an external cdrom for as long as I can remember.. Anyway, I reformatted the harddrive, not knowing that usb cdrom drives arent detected without windows(I could've sworn that I've done it before)...
Anyway, now I'm stuck with an empty laptop, and I'm not quite sure how to go about installing the os... I'm probably going to get a cdrom soon, but I can't really do that at this point. I was wondering if there's an alternative way in doing this.. I do have access to a desktop computer, and I do have a usb floppy driver and a usb cdrom drive.. (laptop detects the floppy drive just fine)...

Recently I've started to hear some odd sounds coming from my DV2. I've been hearing pops, clicks, clacks, something that sounds something is constantly being turned on and off, and a very faint sound that sounds almost like a fan, but is coming from more near the middle or right side of the laptop than where the fan is.
Just wondering how bad these sounds are, or if they're natural laptop sounds that for some reason I just never heard.
I have found a "fix" for my laptop's fans not going fast when needed (Putting in Stand-by/Sleep Mode and Waking it up), But is it normal to be having these temps at regular usage?

With that being said, I still don't want a crappy laptop that isn't stable (As far as graphics). I'm going to be using it for basically word processing, viewing movies, music editing, light video editing, and web browsing of course. I just need to know if it's a good machine, if anyone with the laptop care to let me know their experience, that was would be dope. If it's not any good I could just send it back for an exchange or get my money back. I paid around 625.00, that was with my student discount, but it came up to 700.00 before that.

View 7 Replies View RelatedOne thing that many people have noticed HP doing is "strangling" its mainstream laptops. For example: the drop of the 9600M GT in the dv5t right before discontinuing it, and no longer offering it on the special edition.
Many forum members also have said that HP seems to be steering people to the more expensive HDX series for gaming.
This consensus has been re-enforced by HP itself. You will notice in their online store that the category once called "Versatile Performance" is now "Everyday Computing." This is pretty transparent...
I've seen lots of posts about laptops that won't start but none with the exact same problem as me. When I press the power button it lights up and it sounds like it's going to turn on but nothing happens. There's nothing on the screen. It sounds like it used to if you closed the lid while it was on.

atm the only real "load" i have running is firefox, digsby (IM client), and itunes. only real cpu usage (through task manager) is firefox. when i exit everything and have nothing running, it use to idle at around 70C but after undervolt i can get it to around 60C
anyway to connect my PS2 to my laptop display. Basically just using my display as a TV...

Can I just replace one slot with one 1 GB so I end up with a 1GB and a 256 MB? r would it be better to have both slots occupied by the same memory capacity?
if your laptop is freezing, u can still move the mouse (using touchpad) but u cant click on anything, it's a complete freeze except for the mouse, alt ctrl delete will not work eitherb. most of the time i get this when i sign in to msn, sometimes i sign in without freezing sometimes it freezes right when i sign in, at that exact moment, sometimes it freezes when i use firefox, it neer freezed before when i worked on a non internet related application
