Jan 26, 2010I purchased an HP nc8430 in 2006, and its been brilliant.
Its getting a bit long in the tooth and I am now after a replacement.
I do some moderate gaming so a dedicated video card is a must.
At present, I am looking at the Dell Studio 15/16 models as they seem to offer good bang for the buck. However I have been so happy with my HP Notebook that I would like to see what HP have to offer.
I have tried the HP UK website, however I totally hate the layout of it, and am totally confused with the myriad of options and model ranges. I cant seem to filter out what I want.
What I am looking for is a 15" (approx) laptop with a dedicated video card.

Mar 20, 2010Lately (last two weeks) my gpu has been dowclocking itself, that wouldnt be problem if it wasnt happening ingames (wow, wc3, hl2), even with powerplay off gpu still downcloacks itself to 392/250 from 425/380 and funny thing is, gpu alone swaps between those modes arounde once per minute. also when i alt+tab gpu clocks itself back to 425/380 (all this is happening while ingame)
now that isnt problem in wc3, but in hl2 and wow couses low fps (3-4 )instead of regular 40+ making games unplayable
i am using windows 7 x64, with all the leatest updates, didnt test if this happens on xp but willing to try, problem is i lost my recovery cd-s :S
Week b4 this started to happen i used mobility driver moder and instaled catalyst 9.3, noticed significal fps boost in wow and hl-2, even tryed fresh win instal with vista64 drivers for gpu from hp page (very old drivers) still it didnt solve my problem, mbo has latest bios availible from hp.
Some help would be awsome as i'm rly out of options and what to do, and rly dont feel like reinstaling windows once again ...
could i somehow disable powerplay or owerride it with ati tray tools? problem is i cant run any 3d aplication if att is on they just dont wanna start.

I am trying to clear this Power-On Password message on a HP Compaq nc8430. Searching though this forum and on the Internet, everyone mentions I should remove the laptop battery and the internal battery to clear this password. I have do so and left the battery out overnight and the password is still there.
I have found another mention of a IC or similar that is used on laptops to be more secure. I have also found mention that some laptops can be reset by a "jumper" or by touching points on a motherboard.

Oct 2, 2009I have Windows 7 RTM running on my nc8430 laptop. It has been working great. The only issue is a standby problem. If I put the computer to sleep via the FN-f3 combo it goes to sleep like it should and wakes up like it should. My power profile is set to put the computer to sleep after 10min of inactivity. If after 10min I let the computer go to sleep on its own, upon resuming it from standby I get a black screen. The computer is on and everything is working with sound, just no screen.
I am assuming it is a possible BIOS problem or video driver problem. I have the most recent of each and have tried different video driver versions but no fix.

so it's sort of like drag and drop, except wirelessly.
the windows xp is a desktop with a router configured and the laptop configured to use the router for wireless access...
ive been trying to understand how all this works, but i cannot simply manage to access windows xp, or using windows xp to access windows 7!
i have a cat5 cable if that is needed... but i dont know what to do with it..
Even if it's not wireless and with the CAT5 cable, i am willing as long as it gets transferred, i just prefer wireless
and i think i rea that Homegroup is not compatible with Windows XP so what do I use?
it's also confusing that in my Network Map on windows 7, it does not pick up the shared documents folder on my desktop.

May 20, 2009I have windows XP installed on my dv6894ca notebook computer, all went fine and I followed the guide posted here and used some of the drivers, the rest I obtained from the HP Support site for my notebook. My problem is that my laptop seems to be running very hot compared to what It did with Vista. The fans are on a lot more, and the notebook is hotter to touch than it was running Vista. It's almost like the CPU isn't slowing itself down enough, or the GPU isnt. Im not sure why it is doing this, any pointers or tips would be nice. It just seems like with XP everything gets hot, faster, and doesn't cool down that well.

When I get my upgrade disc for Win 7, I'm considering installing it over the Win 7 RC partition and leaving the Vista partition in tact for now in case their are any problems with the install. I've read that you can do a clean install even with the upgrade disc. Is this a viable and/or advisable method?

Primary Hard Disk: 7.0
Needless to say. The combination of Win7 and the SSD have brought it back to life. Even if it dies, I'll still have an SSD to put in my next laptop.

Mar 14, 2010I have a HP zv6000 with the exact model being 6007us. I wanted to know if anyone has tried putting windows 7 on the laptop. Ive researched but with no straight answer, ive read that the pc can hold up to 2GB of Ram and that with windows 7 installed, it can read 4Gb. Im happy with the way it is functioning with XP but ive heard that with windows 7, it would be faster, save battery, and might help with overheating. Ive recently had trouble with the laptop overheating and ive cleanded out the entire pc, use a chill mat, but it will out of no where go from 40c to 90c. Can windows 7 be put on with no problems being kind of an old laptop? If so would it help a bit with it overheating?

But before I go and upgrade/install everything I have a few questions.
1. Am I able to do a clean install? Does the product key in the kit allow for me to do this?
2. How would I go about doing a clean install properly? (paranoid about mucking things up)
3. After doing a clean install, am I able to use the second disk to update the drivers, etc. or can I only use it when doing the upgrade option?
HP/Compaq :: The Windows 7 RC, My 2510p And An SSD
Jun 11, 2009I've had my much enjoyed HP Compaq 2510p for some time now and although it's not the fastest machine in the world, I like the size, build and look of the thing.
Its a 1.2GHz U7600 dual core machine with a 60Gb HDD and 2Gb RAM.
I've always run XP Pro and been happy with it, but I have recently installed the Windows 7 RC. It runs very well indeed despite the slow processor etc. I like it a lot, I have to say. It's here for keeps, I think.
Nevertheless, I'd like to quicken things up a tad, and had in fact felt like that before I went from XP Pro to W7RC.
So along comes an MTRON MOBI 3000 32Gb 1.8" ZIF IDE SSD. Lovely jubbly, that should perk things up a bit. Some will view 32Gb as a bit small but I want the OS, MS Office 2007, some work files and the EVE Online client on the machine and that's about it. I think 32Gb should be enough.
Out goes the battery, off comes the HDD cover. 2 screws to release the old HDD, er, unscrewed. I undid the ZIF, replaced HDD with the new SSD and put it all back together.
Booted the 2510p and it recognised the drive and started to boot from the W7RC DVD that I bunged in the optical drive.
Failed.
The W7RC bombed out almost immediately saying it had a problem with (I think) /boot/cd.
I wonder if this is because it doesn't have the required drivers for the SSD? Or if it needs there to be at least one partition on the drive for it to work. Or is my DVD a bit jiggered?

Aug 14, 2009Im thinking on buying a new HDX18t with a quad core extreme processor. Is it possible to configure these units with XP? HP seems to offer only native Vista Drivers though I thinki as long as all hardware is probably identified it can be possible to find all the necessary drivers for XP.

May 12, 2009I got my HDX 18 yesterday, very impressed. I have the T9550 with DDR3 option.
So I installed Windows 7 RC and downloaded all the latest drivers. I got all the drivers working without any problems, besides when I installed the latest AUDIO drivers from the HP Website, the system became very slow, even when trying to move the volume bar up, it would freeze up. So I removed that driver and installed the driver that came in the SWSetup folder on my drive, that seemed to work just fine.
The real problem im having is with the GFX Drivers, and maybe it's just me, but it feels VERY slugish when moving windows around, and I even see a delay when right clicking on icons on the desktop, this can't be right? I have 185.81_notebook_win7_64bit_beta.exe nvidia driver installed.
After running win7 I desided to install vista 64bit, and the GFX works great in vista, no slug at all...
