A major BIOS update has been posted over at HP for current 14-inch Intel notebooks. A few models are supported in this release; see the list of compatible products below.
does anyone of you had installed ubuntu 8.04 or ubuntu 8.10 in your notebook as the second os? or the only os? i need to know coz i cant install my ubuntu cd(8.04 64-bit)
My notebook (CQ40-314TU) recently encountering a strange problem: When I turn it on, the caps lock led blinks continuously. The screen is black, the power led is on but the HDD led is off. Everything is OK when I press Power button and turn it on again but it repeat next time.
Can the Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU handle a C2D mobile chip? It's stock with a T3400 but would it handle the T7600? The two chips are nearly identical with 65nm, 667MHz FSB, 35W power, and even packing type.

I just got a new laptop. But there seems to be a problem with the Broadcom Wireless Driver. When I install the driver it always stops at the middle and says Error"PBR_REL_5_10 827" Do you think that the Wifi(device) is broken? I just installed Vista.
my compaq cq40 laptop dvdrw driver missing its driver so it cannot read the cd. so what should i do next. i've use the microsoft fix it tools and it says my driver is missing. where can i get my optiarc dvd rw ad7561s ata driver?

I recently picked up a Compaq Presario CQ40-332TU - it's pretty much a bottom of the barrel bargain laptop, I know, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handled playback of 720p video, even output over HDMI to a 720p HDTV.
The relevant specs are as follows:
Intel T3400 (2.0GHz) 2 GB RAM GMA 4500MHD
Running video through:
Quicktime 7.6.4 VLC 1.0.3
My question is, can this computer play 1080p video? My understanding of the integrated video card is that it SHOULD be able to handle 1080p playback quite smoothly. However, I can't ever seem to get it to run for more than 10 seconds at a time without dropping frames and getting video lag and severe ghosting / pixelization and artefacting. I'm currently running the RC1 of Windows7 (I'm waiting for the prices here in the Philippines to drop as they're a bit exorbitant)
what the performance difference is between the Intel Core i7-620M and the . Intel Core i7-820QM. I always thought the quad core 820QM was faster, but on the hp website the dual core 620M is more expensive.
Is the 620M faster? And is it faster for specific things only?
my touchpad not working(cursor can move but cant click) on compaq presario cq40 512 TU. i try fixing by double click on upper  left (not working) and go to control panel>mouse>hardware (PS2 and HID mouse setting) but there is no toouchpad /sypnatics enable or disables setting. is it because of software or driver? btw, the lights is off. try to search for all files and folder of touchpad but none of the results.
when I got my 9400/E1705 I was always sad for not having the AHCI option available in the BIOS.

In the Sony forum, they have found a way to activate these options even if they're not present in the BIOS:
How to Enable Intel VT and AHCI on a Napa/Santa Rosa platform Phoenix BIOS Vaio laptop ... The only item you'll need is a bootable DOS media. Click one of these links for instruction for creating a bootable floppy disk (with USB floppy drive) or usb stick.USB flash1 or USB flash2 or CDR (add modified table file to image before writing). Instructions:
1.Download symcmos and copy it to your bootable DOS media. This utility is used to modify your Phoenix BIOS settings. Also, download a DOS text editor and copy it to the media if you feel comfortable editing a file in DOS.
2.Go to the BIOS by pressing F2 during start-up, or when the VAIO logo appears, and reset the settings to factory default. Save and reboot.
3.Go back to the BIOS and enable the boot from external devices option. Save and reboot.
4.Press ESC when the VAIO logo appears to bring up the boot selection menu and select the bootable DOS media. At the prompt, type "symcmos -v2 -lDefault.txt", without quotes, and note that there's no space in between the flag and filename. This will create a literal symbol table from the NVRAM named Default.txt which contains all the current BIOS settings. Reboot by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. If that doesn't work, hold the power button until the notebook turns off.
5.Use the DOS text editor (or boot to another OS and use a text editor there) to edit the generated Default.txt file. Change the following lines and save the modified file to something else (e.g. modified.txt):

Was having an issue on bios A12 (I think it was) with the brightness (function keys were not adjusting it properly), so updated the bios to A15 and the latest intel drivers as advised. (have intel, not nvidia).
Now the screen on boot is either blank or with only blue lines.
Can hear it booting into windows so the system on the whole seems fine.
Have got it working successfully on an external monitor via the vga port. I have tried to reapply the A15 bios and reinstall the intel drivers but not changed anything. The display properties in windows shows the laptop monitor as stuck on 640x480 and low colours. screen is off on 640x480 and if upped to the only other option 800x600 gives blue lines.
Using windows 8.1 i've uptaded my intel hd 4000 drivers, restarted and lauched a 3d game. After few seconds I tried alt+tab and then everything got stalled and eventually with lots of artifacts on screen I've got a message about a system crash and that system now is dumpin information to a file and next it will restart. In that moment I've panicked and hard reseted (so memory dump hadn't finished).
So now when I try to boot - for a quite some time there is a black screen and then a list of boot options pops up:
Normal Startup ,  bios setup , boot menu ....  but the keyboard is not working at all.
So after connecting a usb keyboard I entered boot options and there iv noticed something strange:

EC version is messed up.
Keyboard is not working at all and some other things.
On top of that when I'm choosing normal startup the windows "wheel" is turning but its newer getting to boot.
if it's possible to disable the Intel card completely and use NVIDIA directly through BIOS?
I'm trying to use Nvidia Nsight to debug shaders in OpenGL but Optimus/Switchable Graphics make things difficult for Nsight.At his point BIOS has just UMA and Switchable Graphics as options.But I've seen other laptops with a discrete graphics option.Is this model hardcoded to go through the Intel card anyway?Is there some other BIOS version that can add the option?
On my T540p, I configured the rapid start technology according to [URL] ....  Since I have performed a BIOS update to 2.14  and an update of the Intel Wifi driver to 17.0.5, I experience the problem of battery drain when the computer is in S4 sleep state, at a rate of approximately 0.125% per hour (on the 56Wh battery).  This was not the case before these updates. There was no noticable power drain in S4 sleep state, even not over multiple days. I'm using Win7, I set all the WoL capabilities both in BIOS and in the Intel driver to disabled, according to [URL] ....  External device USB charge settings are also fully disabled in BIOS and Power Manager. The problem does not occur when the system is fully shut down, but in S4 Sleep state, which should be a zero-power state too, as it was before the updates. In the details of the BIOS update it is stated " Fixed an issue where the computer might fail to enter sleep state". Could the power drain be a side effect of this fix? Or is it an issue with the (new) Wifi driver, as it was the case for the Y410P?  How could this battery drain be avoided?
I have installed Intel X-25M SSD with Windows 7 Ultimate in my old dv9000 (CD, 1 Gb RAM), and it is quite a disaster. The laptop is getting hot, installing programs (Portal from Steam) results in 90 C on the processor and a shutdown...
I use RM CPU Clock to lower CPU multiplier from 13x to 6x (it works on my HDD and Windows XP, I don't have issues), but on SSD it won't help much.
Browsing: 70 C Installing software: up to 90 C and sometimes a shutdown... Playing games: up to 80 C
Based on dannyres's thread and my other driver threads, I've decided to post the latest drivers that are compatible with the HP ENVY 15 premium series notebooks. It is part of my ongoing, informal commitment to help assist those who had performed clean installs on their HP notebooks. Please let me know if you find newer drivers or other devices so I can update this post!
NOTE: All of these drivers come from HP's website, Microsoft Update, and from other reputable websites (including other manufacturers). All of the drivers here are WHQL Certified or digitally signed drivers, available as of the date when this post was updated. These drivers should be compatible with the notebook series stated above, but I am not responsible for technical difficulties that can occur as a result of improper driver installation!
Following along the same lines as the other driver threads, the process of installing and updating drivers is for ADVANCED/EXPERIENCED users only. Average users can use the drivers located at the HP support portals -- they're the safest and simplest way to go in terms of drivers for your specific model. HP recently added the QX9300 CPU to the list of processors for the HDX18T Notebook. My question is, will HP Include the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility with the notebook? The Intel XTU will allow you to overclock the QX9300 Extreme processor... it would be stupid to pay so much money for the cpu without being able to overclock it... Intel claims that the utility will ship with OEM systems?
whether it's possible to install Intel Turbo Memory in the HP 8710w. I've searched through the old threads on this forum, but no one has confirmed one way or another whether Intel Turbo Memory can be fitted into the 8710w.
I want to enable Intel VT on my HP Pavillion DV2842SE. I need to do this to run a 64 Bit Guest OS in VMware/Sun Virtual Box. Currently, the Phoenix BIOS (version F2E dated 12-2008) hides this feature. I have tried flashing to older BIOS versions just in case with no luck. My Proc is Intel Core 2 Duo T 5600, Mobo is Wistron 30CD, INtel GM 965 Chipset, 4 GB RAM, running Vista Home Premium 64 Bit. I had previously installed XP Prof 64 Bit on this laptop and got Intel VT turned on(so it is clearly supported), but cannot do it when I returned to factory installed Vista Home Premium 64 Bit (some software was not available for XP like Youcam and Multi-Touch scrolling for trackpad,etc and so I had to (sigh) return to Vista).
I have a dv4z and wanted to upgrade its wifi capabilities. Right now it has a Broadcom 4321, and because of the HP whitelist, I can only change to a Intel Wifi link 5100. is the Intel 5100 better or worse than the Broadcom?
I have the HP 8530w and a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router and am trying to make them work together. Using the G speed (54mbit), the network is stable (signal quality is excellent). But when I try the N speed, the situation is different. The network starts working as it should, but when loaded (big files transferred), the network suddenly dies and windows vista can take up to a couple of minutes before it discovers the missing link. During that time, the 5300 AGN still receives packets from the router (10 beacons per second as per setup in the router). But no packets are sent (checking with Intels statistics tool).
So it looks like the Intel 5300 AGN doesn't send any packets all of a sudden OR that the DIR-615 has become temporarily deaf. But disconnecting/reconnecting in vista make the network work right away indicating the problem is with the Intel 5300.
As an ekstra test, I tried having the Asus EeePC 1000H (also has 802.11n draft) transfer the same files while the HP 8530w was and then the network was MUCH more stable. The HP 8530w experienced 1 dropout but the EeePC continued transferring at full speed. Obviously the Intel 5300 AGN has severe problems talking with the DIR-615, problems so big it cannot figure out how to recover normally. :-(
Needless to say, I have tried playing with most settings in the Intel 5300AGN and also with the DIR-615, but without success. The network breaks down, always.
On the plus side, the EeePC 1000H is stable.
I wonder if it is possible to exchange the Intel 5300 in the 8530w with another wireless lan? I'd prefer to have a card that works.
