when I got my 9400/E1705 I was always sad for not having the AHCI option available in the BIOS.
This was asked for so many times:

In the Sony forum, they have found a way to activate these options even if they're not present in the BIOS:
How to Enable Intel VT and AHCI on a Napa/Santa Rosa platform Phoenix BIOS Vaio laptop ... The only item you'll need is a bootable DOS media. Click one of these links for instruction for creating a bootable floppy disk (with USB floppy drive) or usb stick.USB flash1 or USB flash2 or CDR (add modified table file to image before writing). Instructions:
1.Download symcmos and copy it to your bootable DOS media. This utility is used to modify your Phoenix BIOS settings. Also, download a DOS text editor and copy it to the media if you feel comfortable editing a file in DOS.
2.Go to the BIOS by pressing F2 during start-up, or when the VAIO logo appears, and reset the settings to factory default. Save and reboot.
3.Go back to the BIOS and enable the boot from external devices option. Save and reboot.
4.Press ESC when the VAIO logo appears to bring up the boot selection menu and select the bootable DOS media. At the prompt, type "symcmos -v2 -lDefault.txt", without quotes, and note that there's no space in between the flag and filename. This will create a literal symbol table from the NVRAM named Default.txt which contains all the current BIOS settings. Reboot by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. If that doesn't work, hold the power button until the notebook turns off.
5.Use the DOS text editor (or boot to another OS and use a text editor there) to edit the generated Default.txt file. Change the following lines and save the modified file to something else (e.g. modified.txt):
Since 2 years ago, I owned an Acer Aspire 9420. It is a 17" laptop with Intel CPU (Intel C2D T5600). According to Intel website, T5600 processor have Intel Virtualization Technology. However, for unknown reason, there is no option to turn ON Virtualization in the BIOS. Even Acer doesn't provide BIOS update that support this feature. My works involved VMware simulation & this prevent me from running 64 bit guest OS. Since buying another laptop seems not worth at all & Acer Aspire 9420 is a strong laptop to do heavy job, I'm determine, what ever it takes, I will enable Virtualization on this laptop.

My computer: HP Envy Sleekbook 6 - 1153eo Windows 8 Pro  AHCI is currently disabled on my computer and I wish to enable it to get the most performance out of it. It can easily be enabled via the windows registry but to get it working i need to be sure that AHCI is currently enabled in the BIOS aswell. When I enter the BIOS there just isnt any advanced options available, only time and date and other basics. How do i find out wether or not AHCI is enabled in the BIOS? How do i get access to the advanced options in the BIOS to turn on AHCI (if it isnt already enabled that is)?
I have a FW and I read the topic about VT which don't support FW series. When I look intel's page I saw that my processor ,core 2 duo p8700, supports Intel VT. how can I activate?
There are a lot of BIOS MOD request forums out there but most of them only specialize in SLIC modification. Our job is to unlock hidden menu in the BIOS. We don't want to use "specialize" word here but we know the "how" to get the job done. Based on the old thread Acer Laptop with Phoenix BIOS: Enable Virtualization, we decided to open new thread which specifically deals with BIOS MOD requests.

I upgraded my hard drive to a SSD and that is done. Laptop works fine. Installed the Samsung SSD software and it says I need to Enable AHCI to get the SSD running at full potential.  I searched the BIOS and do not see anyplace to change this. I then went to the Device Manager in Windows 8.1and I do not see any ATA/SATA controller. All I see is a RAID controller. RAID controller in a laptop?  How to enable the AHCI?
Year old i7 Envy Dv7-7398ca notebook with Samsung 840 Pro x 256 SSD.  Windows 8.1. I updated to the  SSD soon after I purchsed the notebook.    No issues except the Samsung Magician SSD software keeps flagging me that AHCI mode is disabled and needs to be enabled and I do not see it in BIOS. Nor do I see anything that relates to it in Device manager like IDE or whatever.  It appears the SSD is not optimizing itself based on the fact it thinks AHCI is disabled.
This is an older laptop that I'm working on for a friend. She don't have enough money for tech support or anything like that. I went through the system to change the ownership to me, hoping that it would facilitate the process.
The only good thing is that I can still boot from a USB drive, though nothing I've tried from that angle works. The HDD is locked down, of course.
Acer Extensa notebooks usually come with SATA drives. However, my impression is that models with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU's have built-in SATA/AHCI support in Vista, while AMD Athlon 64 X2 models do not:
- Device Manager shows the drive and controller as IDE/ATA, not SATA, even when the drive is SATA;
- there is no option in BIOS (even latest version) for switching from ATA compatibility to SATA/AHCI
It looks like AMD does not support SATA/AHCI, while AMD does not.
If you doenst know what VT is - YOU DONT NEED IT ^^
At first i was a little bit afraid, to take the risk to hack the Bios, but finally i take it.
Not only VT works now fine, also the advanced Bios Setup Screen, let me finetune everything i ever dream from. You could tweak many things, dont do there anything, if you doent know what you do.

There were many SR4 laptops sold in May 2009 in China suffering the problem of stopping responding randomly and frequently, which caused quite a lot of hot threads discussing.
Sony identified the problem as some bugs in BIOS firmware and hence released an update to fix this.

As a "side effect" some customers noticed that Sony has officially enabled the option of VT in BIOS settings!
This is quite unbelievable according to the usual style of Sony. Maybe it is because of the pressure from XP mode in the upcoming Windows 7.
Unfortunately the BIOS update still does not give SLIC 2.1 so to activate Windows 7 we still need SLIC 2.1 from Lenovo or other brands.
I got a T430s with the nvidia nvs 5400m and when i try to update drivers etc via the lenovo system update I got a message that I should update the Intel rapid storage driver to 11.2.0.1006, and that isn't even the latest version, but anyway I mark the update and let it install and then reboot. But when I search for updates I have to update the same driver to the same version I just installed. I have tried to remove the driver via device manager, but without results.
I want to enable Intel VT on my HP Pavillion DV2842SE. I need to do this to run a 64 Bit Guest OS in VMware/Sun Virtual Box. Currently, the Phoenix BIOS (version F2E dated 12-2008) hides this feature. I have tried flashing to older BIOS versions just in case with no luck. My Proc is Intel Core 2 Duo T 5600, Mobo is Wistron 30CD, INtel GM 965 Chipset, 4 GB RAM, running Vista Home Premium 64 Bit. I had previously installed XP Prof 64 Bit on this laptop and got Intel VT turned on(so it is clearly supported), but cannot do it when I returned to factory installed Vista Home Premium 64 Bit (some software was not available for XP like Youcam and Multi-Touch scrolling for trackpad,etc and so I had to (sigh) return to Vista).
I own a Vaio FW series and I found that the Click to Disk Editor doesnt run at all as well as that the vaio update fail to update this particular application.
I just got my new 1720 Inspiron, and I had a problem when trying to create an image of the C and D drive using the Ultimate Boot CD (BART), it would never see my hard disk partitions. I changed the BIOS setting for the On Board Devices from AHCI (default) to ATA for SATA operation. I also had to change the Flash Cache Module to be disabled, it was enabled in the Factory Default. The result of these changes was good, I was able to see my C and D drive when booting from my Ultimate Boot CD. What these changes do? Should I leave my BIOS at the new setting, or will I lose performance from my hard disk?
I am trying to install a hybrid HDD with solid state and a mechanical back-up. The SSD portion works but I can't run the HDD utilities to turn on the mechanical drive portion. I need to turn off RAID and activate AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) for HDD's in the Bios settings. It would also be nice to update my bios as the revisions come out. W540 20BG001CGE, had BIOS 1.05 and RAID 1 with two Samsung 840 EVO 1TB working fine under Windows 7 - x64. Did a (by lenovo update tool recommended) BIOS Update with the bios update manager to 2.05. Update ran fine. After Rebooting (and loading defaults, disabling Intel Rapid Start, Changing BIOS boot option to legacy first ... I recognized SATA Option (AHCI or RAID) in BIOS is gone. At boot Intel Matrix Storage Configuration doesnot appear anymore (where you can build RAID etc). Â Boot then brings up message "missing operating system". Â Downgrade to BIOS 1.05 impossible, due to ISO File on www.lenovo.com support is not system compatible, message "Lenovo Group Limited - Invalid system disk; Replace te disk, and then press any key") (The link to the ISO File version 1.05 at the bottom of this page links a non bootable ISO image [URL]....) Looking at fitting an SSD which needs AHCI. So I looked on microsoft and saw registry edit which I've done. Then I changed to AHCI in BIOS and get BSOD so set it back. Also I see that there are problems with Smsung Pro, does any problems with Samsung evo ? Why mSATA is not recommended for boot disk and only for cache ?
