HP/Compaq :: New HDX18 Stopped Booting Up
Jun 27, 2009
This is my second HDX 18 Laptop sent by HP in the last month. I've had this one for about a week. Everything was fine when I went to bed last night. This morning when I went to start it up it stays at the first screen (the one with the bios logo and tells you to press f10 for options) sorry if I am wrong on describing that. I can get to the Bios but I get 7 loud beeps before it enters. I am now running the system diagnostic tests on it because I have NO idea what else to do!
I don't know that much about computers so I would just ask that you use beginners terms.
now I am getting something that says "Start-up Test" Failed "Boot device not found" (3F0)
What does this mean?? ****

I was on vista bootcamp and Loading a page on this site and listening to the music at the same time. My computer froze. I hard shut it down and restarted to my mac os x to set the fans to max. Now when i'm im booting to windows through bootcamp, I goes past the first blinking cursor at the top and before showing the cursor a second time, it stops on a black screen and continues booting up. It doesn't go past the black screen. I hard shut it down and went to parallels to try to boot it. It boots up fine on parallels! Now what happened? Is it something to do with my bootcamp manager? I don't want to re format my windows again.

I have a month-old dell inspiron 5323 13z running windows 8 that stopped booting yesterday. I had a problem with booting since I got the laptop, namely the boot always stopped and had to press ctr+salt+del to continue the boot process. Dell support recommended the usual things: updating the bios, the OS, resetting the system to factory settings with no effect. Finally, I have decided I can leave this minor annoyance until know when it stopped booting at all after hybernating the system (there was no problem with hybernate before this incident).
So, it displays the dell logo for a short time when powering up, then the screen goes blank but not completely black. After pressing some keys like space a text 'f12 options' is printed in the lower right corner and en empty horizontal bar may appear. Then typing ctrl+alt+del or some random keys the boot may continue and at this point it may be possible to enter the boot menu by pressing f12. So I can change the boot option to uefi or legacy, but neither works. There is no option to boot from USB or anything else (no DVD drive anyway!). So I cannot even try to boot a linux live CD. However, i remember that these options existed before before in the boot order or priority list which is empty now. I can run the pre-boot diagnostics from the boot menu, but it does not find any problem.

My G580 suddenly stopped booting into Windows.
The first black screen with the Microsoft logo loads but afterwards I just get stuck in a black screen with the cursor which I can move around but nothing more.
So, my solution was to get into Safe Mode. Unfortunately although I don't have a password when Win7 boot, I'm asked for one in Safe Mode. The thing is neither the keyboard, nor the touchpad work so I cannot get past the login screen.
The keyboard works perfectly in BIOS, but not in the Windows login screen for Safe Mode.

I bought my HP HDX X18T-1200 CTO approx. 6 months ago and it was installed Vista on it. I upgraded it to W7 (clean install, of course) and I think W7 is a great OS, and way better than Vista. But, as i remember, ever since i started using W7, my problems with this laptop started too. Generally, my laptop has 4 main problems:
1. My eject button and bass/treble slider aren't working! I've read a lot of users are complaining about this issue but some of them say they can make it work. I'm wondering how they do it (and how can i do it, of course ).
2. When I install MediaSmart, QuickPlay, Tone Control (or whatever they are called) program that has volume/bass/treble indicator, it doesn't work properly and keeps popping up (especially it happens when I close the laptop's cover or wake up the computer from the hibernate mode). So I deleted all the software related with this. When it pops up, my bass/treble sliders (but not the volume slider) are malfunctioning, too, bass and treble levels just keeps increasing and decreasing, increasing and decreasing, increasing and decreasing...
3. My remote control buttons doesn't work at all. I think it's a software-related issue (because it was working a few months ago, my remote control and its batteries are okay too). As I said, Currently I have nothing which is related with QuickPlay, MediaSmart etc. installed on my computer, i think that's the problem. Which program(s) should I install?
4. The issue that annoys me the most is, sometimes (it happens especially when I close the laptop's cover or wake up the computer from the hibernate mode, too) my touchpad enhancements doesn't work, it can't even recognise my taps! At first, I thought it's a touchpad-related issue. But one day, when I can't use the enhancements, I turned on a key grabber software (the software which shows the key codes) and I see the codes of bass and treble slider's buttons! The computer thinks I press the bass/treble slider's buttons constantly bu I don't even touch them!

I somehow have a nick on my HDX18 LCD. From what I can see, the LCD is actually behind the front bezel. I did a google and there's only one place in the net (Pchub) I can purchased a front bezel [url] The store is in Singapore and it is a used part. There's no guarantee that the part is scratch free.
Does anyone know whether the LCD front bezel can really be replaced and anywhere else I can find the part. HP don't have them and they insist on replacing the WHOLE LCD instead of the bezel.

I'm looking for an 18.4" / nVidia GTX / Core i7 notebook; So far the HP HDX18t has been the most impressive notebook that I've found and have been interested in -- barring the CPU. Does anyone know if there's any plans for a Core i7 HDX18 notebook anytime soon?

I bought a HDX 18 here in the UK, it came specced with 2 x 250GB HDD's...
I'd have liked to run them in a RAID 0 config but not sure if I can? I know that in the US you were given the option of RAID HDD's?

I am a designer (graphics, website, multimedia, video) so while I don't play a lot of high end games, I do work with a lot of high quality imagery. (Note: I don't do much if any 3D rendering, so I'm safe there.)
Now I've been looking for a new laptop because the one I currently have (HP dv8000) is actually "owned" by my "day job" (also design) and I have been "let go" so the laptop has to go back. I have been very happy with this HP, and have looked at many in my search, but always seem to come back to the HPs.
Originally I was looking at another dv model - the dv7t I believe - but called HP's sales line and after a few questions the sales rep said without a doubt I need the HDX line.
So I've come to my question. I gave myself a $2k budget, so the closer to that the better, but I *do* have a little extra to play with in case something pops up. And having that extra is making my decision hard!
Should I go for the HDX16, maybe save a few bucks, or go for the HDX18 and upgrade to a dual-HDs and quad processors and the 1GB video card?

when I pop in a Blu-ray movie, I'm getting pretty anemic sound and I need to turn the volume all the way up to get it to a decent level. Even then, it's pretty weak.
However, when I'm playing a game (like WoW), the sound is big and full and I actually need to turn it down most of the time.
Why is the sound output so bad when watching BR discs? Anyone else experience this difference in volume and quality of sound? My DV7 was the same way with BR discs. Maybe there is a setting I'm missing to adjust this?

Everyone should be dumping Vista, and embracing W7, especially when you figure as a general rule you should be formatting your C drive and reloading your OS at least annually, and W7 is available freely from microsoft HERE until July 2009, and will be fully functional till March 2010. Many of us in the owners lounge have already made the jump, and you will be hard pressed to find any complaints. Who knows, they may have a discounted W7 install disc ordering link at hp.com like they do for Vista Ultimate.
One of the benefits of W7 is running XP in compatibility mode.(virtually) To run this the best way, you will need to enable "virtualization technology" in your bios, at the "system configuration" tab. LJCook wrote a nice little guide HERE.
Concerning that row of buttons above your keyboard... I am trying to refine this process, so that you need not install all the MediaSmart bloatware unless you want to, and still have a functioning row of buttons, so check back here in a few days, but in my 32 bit version, I installed the audio driver listed below, as well as the mediasmart MPV, and then the mediasmart smartmenu update, (both listed on the HP HDX driver page under Vista 32), and now I have fully functional smartmenu button control..........

I have an HDX18 with IDT HD Sound (Vista Ultimate 64-bit). I've noticed an annoying popping sound with most applications. For instance, when using Trillian instant messenger, when I receive a message the speakers make a distinct pop at the start of the "ding" and at the end. The sound itself is clear, but always initiates and concludes with some kind of pop or click.
This is the same for all Windows sounds (which I've now disabled because of the audio annoyance). I tried disabling the Dolby effects through the IDT control panel, but that made things worse!

I have an issue on my 8 month old HP HDX18 laptop....my 3 yr old son was watching a video and accidently spilled 1/4 glass of water on the laptop.
The lappie shut off and wouldn't turn back on. I quickly disconnected it from the wall and removed the battery. Then I opened up the case up, took apart the mem, HDD and left it outside in my backyard today to dry up and then put everything together and booted up. Laptop boots up usual now BUT the wireless/volume are disabled. Some of the arrow keys are also not functioning normal either. While its obvious its not a total h/w failure, I have some doubts on the mobo/keyboard.
I do have the HP warranty but I'm pretty sure it doesn't cover water damage.

I recently purchased a pavillion HDX18. standard configuration as far as I know, see below:
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz
Memory: 4,096MB (2x 2,048 SODIMM)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
Hard drives 2 x 232GB ST9250827ASS
This is a nice system, but I have some spare cash at the moment and am looking to improve it.
What has been suggested sofar is :
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad Processor QX9300 (2.53Hz) for the processor
UpGrading to 2x 4GB DDR2 or DDR3 DIMMs for a total of 8GB.
The graphics card I have been told can not be touched as it is a part of the mother board.
So the only components left where I feel I may get more speed is the drives. Saddly I have sofar been unable to find any information regarding the replacement of the current "disk drives" with solid state ones.

I'm not sure when it stopped working, all I know is that It used to be able to power on my laptop even if it wasn't turned on as long as I had the battery in, but now that's not even working.
I ended up finding that there's a device conflict between the motherboard and it, but this isn't being helpful in what's conflicting.
I've gone through driver reinstalled, and a BIOS flash, but of course none of that worked;

I have a weird behavior of my brand new HP HDX18 (running Windows Vista 64 bit).
The Laptop does not play BluRay DVDs any more. It only worked two times. I can access the BluRay file system so I assume that the BluRay drive is working. Then trying to watch the movie with either HP MediaSmart or Windows Media Center, both programs hang and need to be stopped via Task Manager.
HP support recommended a video driver update - but...
When I try to install the recommended update of the display driver from the HP HDX18 support site, it installs and the laptop remains working (I hear sounds when receiving new emails or when wiping my finger on the finger print sensor), but the result is simply a black screen. Same thing when using the nvidia beta drivers for notebook chips.
I tried to first switch to Standard VGA, then removing the old nvidia package, then installing the new driver. Same result: A black screen.
All I can do is doing a system recovery to get a working display again.
I did the BIOS update that I downloaded from the HP site as well. I currently have the Spyder software for screen calibration running.
HP support also recommended a "hard reset" of my windows installation, but since I just finished the complete installation of all programs I need, this is not what I really want.

I tried to burn recovery discs for my new rig with Sony brand DVD+Rs, and after gathering info, writing, and finally checking, it tells me it's unsuccessful (this is after burning disc 1 of 2). I've tried a few times with the same result. Anyone know what the deal is here? Do I need a special high quality disc or could it be something else?

there seems to be a consensus that hdx16 is ddr2, but some people seem to be saying hdx18 is gddr3? this doesn't seem to make financial sense from hp's side, but it would be a factor in deciding between the two if it were true.

i just recently posted a disscussion on this model and i recently took it to a repair shop, at first they wanted $180 to fix it, which was ok, then they told us it needed a new harddrive, so it would another $100 more, so we went and got it from them without any work being done... now i have no idea what to do i just spent $200 to buy the thing and now its broke.
Symptoms:
Turns on to the windows recovery failure screen, push enter to continue to start windows and it trys to start up, it goes to the windows screen attemps to load for a second, then flashes a blue and shuts off and repeats the process.

I just got my new DV4t yesterday with a blu ray drive and it's pretty awesome. However, I was hoping I could use the quickplay function so I could use less battery life and use my CPU's power only for watching blu rays without vista wasting resources in the background. But it always boots straight into Windows first and then loads quickplay second.
