HP/Compaq :: Dv2: Athlon Neo Single Core Versus Turion Neo X2
Aug 9, 2009
I was wondering if the new Neo X2 chips in the dv2z are a big improvement over the original Athlon Neo MV-40 single core. IIRC All three are clocked at 1.6 ghz and the single core and dual core Athlon Neo have the same amount of cache (512k) but the Turion has 1mb. I'm up in canada and am considering getting a dv2 to play some older games on, and the dual cores are not yet availible up here, so I am wondering if its going to be worth waiting for the dual cores to become availible up here or should I just go ahead and get one with an MV-40. I already know I am going to be getting one with the HD3410 graphics (not even going to try to game on the X1250, although its probably better than just about everything Intels got out there...).

I am looking to buy a laptop and have zeroed in on these two:
[url]
[url]
They have everything in common except the processor.
2005ax has AMD Turion™ II M500 2.20GHz 1MB L2 cache
1308tx has ntel® Core™2 Duo T6600 2.20 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB
and the difference in their prices, here in India is Rs. 5000 i.e roughly $100.
I have never used an AMD powered PC. Are their any software or hardware compatibility issues with AMDs? Any reason why I should go with the Intel box?

I bought the Acer 1410 with the single core SU3500 Core 2 Solo CPU. It looks like Acer decided to release them with the SU2300 now, which is dual core at 1.2GHz (compared with 1.4GHz of SU3500).
Does anyone have any benchmarks comparing the two, and/or if they have a solid understanding how much better it would perform compared with the SU3500? I also see that the single core AS1410 with Celeron M @ 1.3GHz sells at the same price as the dual core.

Before few hours, the Microsoft update icon pop up.
Yes it was about downloading the latest IE..
The long story in sort , the IE8 caused extreme boot delay on desktop system (well made P4 single at 3400 ) .
And I did, uninstall it in minutes .
Going back to IE7 , and having back my system, as it was (speedy).
I did both , desktop and ACER laptop installations at the same time.
And by looking my desktop to not like the new software, I removed it from the laptop too .
Did you noticed any symptoms with the IE8 , or its just me?

AMD Turion X2 RM-72 - How does it fare in the notebook arena? I had decided to invest on a laptop with the above processor, but many are advising against opting for the laptop, because according to them "AMD heats up pretty fast and will ruin the laptop"
The laptop is question is HP Pavilion dv5-1203ax [url]

i'm having major heat problems with my DV4 1220US, If I let my CPU use 100% it shoots up to 80+c on Idle, 105c Under load. The HDD is usually over 55c idle, 65+ under load.
It's ridiculous considering how cool it is in my apartment, and how I balance the laptop on my right leg, with the whole left side uncovered and allowed to freely vent air.
I made a power profile that locks the CPU at 75% this helps majorly, however the Default "low power" setting @ 50% is impossible to use this computer with.
Is this because AMD processors suck? Could that be why the C2D version of this laptop with identical specs costs $200 more?
I tried to undervolt it with RMClock but it wouldn't let me change anything. There is supposed to be an advanced tab for messing with the voltage but it wasn't there. I was using the latest version of the program, and had all my drivers up to date with a super fresh install of Vista.
Is there anything special I need to do to get the program to work with a Turion X2 RM-72?

I was thinking about getting one of these laptops but I'm kind of concerned about heating issues that seem to have bothered turion laptops?
Also, does it have space to let you add a secondary hard drive?

I was wondering how does this CPU compare to the Intel line-up.
I could not find any benchmarks that compare it head to head.
So would it be equivalent to T6600 or P7450 C2Dou's series?

I have a Compaq V6310US with the Turion TL-50 (64 X2 1.6 GHz), I have already sent it in for a new systemboard under HP's recall.
I use CPU-Z HWMonitor to monitor temps, here are my average LOAD temps (HL2/Counter-Strike:Source ~1 hour play time) with and without chill mat.
Without Chill Mat:
THRM: 79C
Core 0: 78C
Core 1: 85C
GPU: 98C
With Chill Mat:
THRM: 77C
Core 0: 75C
Core 1: 82C
GPU: 94C
Idle for both is more around ~30/25/35/58.
I get absolutely no signs of overheating during play. Are these acceptable temps or am I going to fry the GPU (or CPU) again in another year?
Especially the temps without the mat? I don't always use it because the temps are pretty similar with and without it anyway. Also, anyone knows what the THRM temp is exactly?

I want to upgrade my old laptop to something nice, and am torn between to systems.
An HDX 16 with:
2.40 Ghz dual core duo ( P8600 chip )
6 gigs of ram
OR...
An HXD 18 with
2.0 Ghz QUAD core ( QX9000 chip )
4 gigs of ram
both systems have the same video card ( Nvidia with 512megs of ram ) 500 gig hard drive.
What would be the faster machine for doing video ? and what would be the overall faster machine ?
I realize that not all applications will take advantage of a quad-core chip like the QX900, so this is why I"m asking. if the dual-core P8600 chip @ 2.40 Ghz in the HP HDX 16 with that 6 gigs of ram will actually be faster overall than the quad core would be, and perhaps even be faster at rendering video ?

On my HP DV5-1015TX I notice that there are 2 audio out jacks in the front.
However my speakers have only connector that I plug into either one of these. This works but I am am wondering if there would be any loss of audio quality when used this way (maybe surrond sound or something)? OR is the second audio-out an extra connection to say headphones?

what the performance difference is between the Intel Core i7-620M and the . Intel Core i7-820QM. I always thought the quad core 820QM was faster, but on the hp website the dual core 620M is more expensive.
Is the 620M faster? And is it faster for specific things only?

I currently have an AA1 and am curious to those who tried typing on both the HP Mini and the AA1 keyboards and noticed a difference. I believe the HP's keyboard is 92% and the AA1's is 89% I believe. It feels "okay" to type on, obviously not the best due to its size compared to a normal keyboard, but am wondering if the HP's is worth the price jump (paid 300 for mine).

Just wondering if someone helps me decide how much is difference between two screen type for Dell 16xx. Should you get Dell i5 with RGB or 15.6 WLED with i720?..
If usage is web browsing, movie watching, some digital pics manipulation (non-professional), does it make sense to get i7 with WLED or i5 with RGB?..
I know this has been talked about in various thread, but nothing really solid...

(UPDATES: DIY Bluetooth module guide added below)
upgrading my Aspire 5570 notebook more than a year ago. This time, I’m feeling lucky to share some of my experiences about how I finally upgraded my CPU from a Core Solo T1350Core 2 Duo T7200.
Again, thanks to everybody here in Notebookreview forum especially adinu, hoggie, Mack1982, TehSuigi, krazyphire and bigozone for their insights and knowledge that helps me a lot throughout the whole process. So, let’s get started!
Pre-upgrading
Please refer to these post before you start. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble later on.
Upgraded Acer 3680 Celeron CPU to a T5300!
Aspire 5315 CPU Step-by-Step Upgrade Guide
What you’ll need :Your new CPU (make sure it's compatible with your system ie; socket, FSB)Latest BIOS from Acer (upgraded to 1.3505 or latest)A good thermal paste (I would recommend Tuniq TX-2 or Arctic Silver 5 as well)Basic tools (screwdrivers, forceps, kitchen paper)Body static discharger (I would definitely recommend this as a precaution)Some alcohol, ear buds, sand paper grid 600,1200 & 2000 (optional for heat sink lapping)Lastly TIME and PATIENCE (you’ll be needing these a lot definitely!)When you’re ready, lets get our hands dirty.
How to disassemble your notebook?
I found out a very good video tutorial on how to disassemble my Aspire notebook on YouTube. So please take your time to view it and follow step by step as shown to help you to go through the process.
Lapping your heat sink (optional)
Although it’s not necessary, but I would recommend this process as another way to improve heat dissipation on your newly installed CPU. Refer to this page for detailed instructions.
The simple process:Clean your heat sink from old thermal paste residues with alcohol or equivalent of it using ear buds and kitchen papers.Apply a 600-grid sandpaper to smoothen the heat sink surface which comes into contact with your CPU.Repeat the process again with a 1200-gid sand paper until you’re satisfied. Finally, finish up by applying a 2000-grid sand paper to give you an almost mirror-finished surface. Wipe clean any dirt and residues left.....................................

Well I was trying to buy the M4400 a few days back and the call dropped with the rep and she never called me back. So this gave me time to take a look at the W500 again and I was pleased to find that they had the P9500 offered, so now I am having difficulty deciding which to get.
I will be using the laptop for a lot of CAD work. I do finite element analysis, CAM programming, and part design using CATIA v5r17. I also use MATLAB and Simulink. So CPU, memory, and videocard performance are quite important to me. However I also travel around a lot and I would be bringing this laptop around from the office to the machine shop several times a day, so it needs to be rugged.
What I like about the W500 is that it has the switchable graphics so that it will run cooler and save battery life when graphics power is not an issue. I also like the fact that it has the lower power consumption and higher performance DDR3 memory. Finally, I like that it can be configured with the low power P9500 processor (2.53Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB, 6MB L2, 25W).....................

Ok I have a question that has me a bit confused. I have an inspiron e1505/6400 that has the ati x1400 video card in it.
Now when I recently tore down the laptop I noticed the the heat sink goes over the CPU and another element which everyone says is the GPU. The cpu had thermal grey gunk and the gpu had a purple thermal pad on it.
My question is, if I have the ati card isn't that my gpu? Didn't make sense that the intel 945 board has a gpu if there is already a video card handling graphics.
Also is there anyway to monitor the temperature of the GPU? All the applications I have tried are just showing me cpu temperature and not gpu.

I just put in the order for my new 13" MBP 2.26Ghz laptop, and I'm looking to purchase some protection for the keyboard. The Moshi Clearguard and the iSkin ProTouch seem like the two biggest/bestest contenders out there right now. What are your thoughts on these products?
I like the Moshi because it's so thin and pretty much transparent, so it'll have less of a "feel" than a silicon cover and I'll still be able to see the fabulous backlit keyboard. However, what is this I am reading about the Clearguard becoming cloudy after a bit of use? Is there a way to avoid this (perhaps by washing it, and if so, how often)?
In the other keyboard protector thread a lot of people are suggesting the iSkin ProTouch.
What are the advantages of this protector over the Moshi? I have a silicon cover on my Sony right now and I don't mind the feel. Are you still able to see the backlit keyboard well enough? If I go with the iSkin I will either get the green one or the clear one with no black keys.
