HP/Compaq :: Dv5z - Power Adapter Not Working
Feb 22, 2009
I have HP DV5Z-1000 laptop. The other day my AC adapter stopped working and won't charge my laptop. I know it is the adapter because when I have it plugged into the wall, and not even plugged into the laptop, it beeps.
I got my laptop in the US, but I am currently living in a small town in Canada and can't easily get replacement parts. I am not sure if HP will ship the same adapter to Canada.
My question is, can I buy any old adapter or would I need the same one it came with? If I need to buy a third party adapter what one can i get?

I've been thinking about buying a new power adapter to replace el-giganto that came with it. I understand that there is at least one Kensington power adapter that works (model 33197). That one, IMO is a bit too large. Curiously, that adapter is not directly visible on Kensington's website for Laptop Power Adapters, but is searchable (by part number).
So my question is whether there are any people out there that have used, for example, the model 38066 or the model 38067 successfully? Those two models are smaller (physically) than the 33197, but they don't actually list the Wattage they provide (they're listed by Voltage and Amperage - which kind of makes Wattage, but not exactly). It seems as though they might be 90W adapters (as the product pages make continual reference to their power efficiency over "other 90W adapters" which leads me to believe that they're probably around 90W adapters.
Or whether the model 38031 or 38030 will fit? These adapters are a bit larger, but appear to offer more input amperage. Though they also say "Up to 90W output" so ...
From what I understand, the HP Envy 15 will throttle the machine with less than 120W of input wattage.
Also, the 33197 is apparently an "old model".

I am in need of a new AC adapter for my HP Envy 15. Can any of you veteran owners recommend me a reliable and quality one (and hopefully under $100), preferably with a decently long cord?

I am trying to find a power adapter for my HP dock XB3000, however, everywhere I look, the power adapter seem to be the same. My laptop uses the newer smart pin connection, however the dock uses a smaller plug. When I look on ebay, I see they list practically all hp laptops to be compatable with their power adapters. I was just wondering if the power adapters are practically universal, other than the difference between the 65W and the 90W adapters.

So while I was getting a blu-ray burner and HD upgrade for my DV5t, I got a promo advert in the mail from HP and it mentioned their Slim Travel Power Adapter (with USB charging port). I travel about 4000 miles by plane every 4-6 weeks, and I carry my Dv5t with me in a shoulder bag. After putting my laptop in a neoprene sleeve before putting it in the bag next to my paper file, there is not much room left in the bag for the power supply, wireless mouse, and misc cables, much less a bottle a water for the 4-hour plane trips.
On top of that, the charging port on my phone doesn't work anymore (I know, I need to change it, but I'm waiting for summer when I'm out of contract and can switch carriers and phones), but it still charges via the USB sync cable.
So the slim travel charger was looking pretty good - less space used in a very tight bag, and a way to charge my phone when my laptop is off. So I ordered it excitedly.
And I was quite let down.
The first issue I've had with it, is that although the transformer block it is slimmer in height that the one the that came with my laptop, it's just as long, and wider. At it's tallest, around the AC-in port, where it bulges out, it looks be just under a 1/4-inch in height savings. while being about 3/8th-inch wider and 1/8th-inch shorter (the long axis).

if this has happened to any notebook user:
for a week now, my ac adapter/power cord has been making crackling noises when i unplug it...at first i thought it was static electricity, then today, I saw smoke coming from it
it won't work for awhile, then it will magically start charging my notebook
it seems really dangerous & i'm afraid it's gonna catch fire or burn me.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 and my friend has a Latitude D820.
Tonight she accidentally plugged my power adapter into her laptop. A few hours later, she noticed that her laptop indicated that it wasn't plugged in, and that's when we realized that she had accidentally used my adapter instead of hers.
Now my adapter doesn't work at all. We've tried the adapter with both our laptops with different outlets with the same problem, so we know it's the adapter. The green light also doesn't come on when it's plugged in anymore.
Did plugging my adapter into her laptop somehow screw up my adapter, or could this just be a coincidence? Is there any way to fix the adapter or at least figure out what the problem is? And if I have to purchase a new adapter, do the universal ones they sell at retail electronics stores work OK? I would order one from Dell but I'm working on a project now and I don't have time to wait for it to ship.

I have a new DV5z with the AMD Turion zm-84 and ATI radeon 3450. When I'm running on A/C power and on the high performance mode, the fan runs constantly. When I'm not even using the computer and it's sitting at idle, it still runs! It's loud...louder than a 2008 notebook should be IMO.
Is this a defect? Why won't the fan ever stop running?

I have been looking online and getting mixed results regarding buzzing noises from ac power adapters. My old hp dv6000 laptop powerbrick did not make buzzing noises as loud as my new dv6-1235cl from costco.
I noticed that a lot of people now hear buzzing noises from their ac adapter. Then I came onto this website.
[url]
Is this a bunch of bs or are they for real?
I can hear the buzzing noise when I put my ac adapter on the table, but almost non existent when its on the ground. I want to know if this will be a fire safety hazard in the future? I dont want my house burning down even when this thing is plugged in.

I'm considering paying the extra $100 to add in the 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450 to the dv5z I'm customizing...
My question is if I add that in does this machine make use of the "Hybrid Crossfire " capabilities and have the integrated and dedicated work together?

This will just be used for college; email ,internet, homework, watching videos, a couople games like (general's zero hour)---but I'm not too much into gamming at all.

My last computer was the HP DV5Z, which I LOVED. It was the perfect size, did everything i needed it for, and was an overall great choice.
Unfortunately, 1) My laptop was stolen when my apartment was broken into , and 2) they no longer sell the dv5z on hp.com
Now, I am for sure going to order my laptop from hp.com, so I need to know what you guys would recommend.
I will use my laptop for gaming, research, college, and DVD burning.
I am almost positive I want the slightly bigger dv6z, and thats my main choice.
However, I'm not sure how big of a difference performance in CPU is, if 4 gigs of ram is REALLY worth it over 3gigs of ram, whats the benefit of the wireless-N card over G, and how come all the coupons are used up

I have had a HP dv5z w/ windows Vista Home Premium - 64 bit for two days now.
1) I have a wired USB mouse that I use since the touchpad is terrible. But everytime, I plug in this supposedley plug and play mouse, there is a message that says device driver is being installed and it takes a few moments before the mouse can be recognized. Is this normal?
2) Also, the day i got my laptop, i had to download Windows updates (the automated message on the control panel said so!) and installed them. I am not sure if its related but since then i have re started my laptop 2-3 times and there is a file check process that happens as a part of the start up and then just before the welcome screen comes, i get a message
Step 1 of 3 - Configuring Updates - Do not shut down your computer.
How long is this going to happen and is this normal?

I have just installed an i7 2670Qm on my T420 today. The machine will crash pretty soon after booting up, with the screen having colorful vertical and horizontal lines before it restarts itself and give the memory error beeping pattern (1 beep-pause-3 beeps-3 beeps-pause-1 beep). So then I took out one RAM from the bottom, and the machine appears to work normally again, more or less.
In the OS (Win7 64), The power manager alerts me that the 65w AC adapter is giving not enough power, so the laptop is running on battery. I thought I just need a 90W AC brick so the laptop will work as it should, so I am arranging a 90w one to come in later. But on a second thought, if the battery cannot start the laptop with 8GB of RAM properly.
Is it the CPU or RAM or Mobo or something else? Where should I look? The machine works fine with the previous CPU i3-2310m and 8GB of RAM.The RAM modules I have are 2 x 4GB Samsung 2Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-11-F3.The BIOS version is updated to the latest 1.46.

Our Studio 1749 will retain a solid connection when the power adapter is plugged into the power board along the side of my laptop. I am unsure if the pins residing in the power board are pushed toward each other so as to not retain connection when the adpater in plugged into the laptop.

After a clean install of vista on my dv5z, all the drivers have been installed and everything works properly...
one thing i noticed was that the battery manager now says
Balanced
Power Saver
High Performance
instead of
HP Recommended
Power Saver
High Performance...
I was wondering if there is any benefit of having Hp recommended instead of just Balanced, and if there is a driver or fix?

I was enjoying my new dv5z and my new Acer V193w monitor when the screen started flashing. I got a message stating that there was display driver failure or something to that effect. It happened once more and then I got a blue screen suggesting I remove any recently installed hardware.
I updated the monitor driver and all seemed well for a while...until it hapenned again tonight.

I really would like to get two of these, since they are less than 1/3 of the price of the adapters I can get in Norway, but I'm a bit suspicious.
The original adapter for my Precision M6500 is 210 watts (which is totally crazy, but I guess the Fire GL card eats most of it), and this is rated at 90w. But will it even work? Here's the eBay auction, it's in Great Britain:

how the power adapter of the Studio XPS 13 looks like, because the size of the power brick is essential to me. Although you can buy a separate one but that would be a waste of money.
So my question is, what's the difference between the 65W power adapter and the 95W power adapter? This is because choosing the Geforce 9500GE online would change the power adapter from 65W to 95W.
Why is this anyway? Isn't the 9500GE suppose to save more battery than the stock 9400GS?

I was wondering if anyone has tried using the Dell 45W power adapter with their E4300. If so, does it work?
It would be handy to carry the 45W one around instead of the 65W one assuming that it works.
