Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: IdeaPad Y580 Shutdown And Fast Startup

Oct 27, 2013

I have a problem with shutting down my computer. While it seems like the system is closed and the screen goes black, the laptop is still working (power button still glows white and ventilators are on). The only way to shut it down completely is by holding the power button for 5 seconds.

My specs are: Intel Core i7-3630QM, 1TB HDD (560GB free), 16GB SSD, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce 660M

In last month my laptop used to be working for 4-5 days in a row, and only today did I notice that it won't shut down. I did some research and found out that the feature called "Fast Startup" is responsible for this - disabling it with Energy Management resolves the problem, and the laptop shuts down nicely, while re-enabling it makes the problem return.
I also found out that the Fast Startup feature (while enabled) creates(/modifies?) a file called "hiberfil.sys" which stores data about my current session and then shuts down the laptop completely.

So apparently there is something wrong about this file or the process of creation/modification of it (I'm not sure how it works) when I try to shut down my laptop. Or even it might be not about that file, but some 3-rd party process which blocks the creation/modification of it?

So my question is what can I do to solve this problem withoutdisabling the Fast Startup feature (I mean disabling it costs me like additional 40 second during turning my computer on, which is not much, but the pure fact that I have to disable this means I have some problems with my laptop).

PS. I ran the "powercfg.exe /hibernate off" command, restarted the laptop, then ran the "powercfg.exe /hibernate on" command, in hope of clean-creation of hiberfil.sys file, but it did not work (maybe there is a way of manually deleting it in order to automatical re-creation of the file during the next shut-down?).

The only thing on my mind now is leaving the laptop "shut down" for a night - maybe that file is so large it needs a lot of time to be created/modified, but that wouldn't explain why shutting down my laptop in the previous 7 months has been taking only like 5-7 second, not the whole night.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: IdeaPad Y580 - PowerDVD 10 Update Won't Install

Apr 25, 2013

I was trying to watch a DVD on my laptop and kept receiving an error from PowerDVD 10, saying that it was an invalid media type. After looking online, I noticed that some people said that the update might fix this. So, I downloaded the update and ran the installer. It required that I remove the current installed version of PowerDVD in order to install the patch. After the installer wiped that from my computer and began to install the patch, I received a message stating that "This software can only be installed on a Lenovo system." This was a patch file that the program sent me to, called "PowerDVD_v5630_RiTA10(Lenovo)(PDVDServDelayStartup)_DVD130802-14.exe"

After looking at this, I went through the knowledge base and found that there is another file linked for updating the PowerDvd software called "Lenovo.Lenovo_RiTA10_v_DVD110707-07.exe". When I tried to run this I get the following error:

"Cannot install the patch. Either this patch is not intended for your version of PowerDVD 10 or your system does not have a previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed. The patch installation will abort."

Of course I don't have any previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed, because the other patch uninstalled it in order to install. Now I am stuck without the DVD software in this terrible Windows 8 environment. I even tried VLC player and the video is cut off. This is very frustrating. This is on my IdeaPad Y580.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y580 IdeaPad - Video Driver Crashes

Oct 27, 2013

Lenovo IdeaPad Y580.

My specifications:
Intel Core i7 -3630QM 2.4 GHz
Windows 8 x64
8 GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (integrated)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660m - not overclocked, (current driver: 327.23)

So the problem is that every time I try to play a 3D-dense game, after around 5 minutes of playing, the game freezes, then the screen goes black and the only thing I can do is to close it (though the problem appears to vary depending on game I'm playing). After ~3 seconds I was forced to close it, the message appears: "Display driver has stopped working and has successfully recovered" + something about NVidia Kernel Driver.

The interesting thing is that a game still "runs" despite showing the blackscreen (e.g. I can hear sounds of scrolling through game menu or other in-game noises/music). Mybe it has something to do with DirectX?

Like I said, the problem may vary depending on game, in most cases I have to do the things I wrote above, but here are the exceptions:

Skyrim: the least problematic - after the blackscreen I can Alt-TAB and return to the normal game (though the game tends to have a bit too rough camera moving after that)
Mass Effect 3: the most problematic - my computer auto-restarts just a moment after the game freezes, and I have to wait for some recovery or something.

I tried to solve that problem in such ways:
-clean install" of the most recent nVidia drivers (including BETA ones) and Intel drivers (for integrated GPU - just in case...)
-adding Tdr
-Delay registry key (one of the official solutions of that problem for Windows Vista/Seven users)
-lowering by 1 MHz core clock and memory clock (by MSI Afterburner) while playing games
-changing power management from Adaptive to Maximum Performance in nVidia control panel
-changing Main PhysX Processor from Auto to GTX 660M (by nVidia control panel)setting Power Throttle On by nVidia Inspector - Profile Settings
-running games in windowed mode

1, 4, and 5'th solution didn't work for me
3'rd one seems to be useful a bit
6'th - I believe it worked alot in prolonging time before crash
2'nd and 7'th - I'm still not sure about them

Lenovo X Series ThinkPad :: Windows 8.1 Fast Startup On X220

Nov 21, 2014

Having some troubles with my X220 and windows 8.1 and fast startup.

It has been working flawlessly for a few months now with Windows 8 and an SSD but has recently decided it does not want to fast startup - every time I try and boot with the feature enabled the laptop immediately shuts off completely after the boot animation. On pressing the power button again the laptop boots 'normally' i.e. at 'normal' startup speed.

I've tried disabling the feature, using the 'powercfg -h off' and 'powercfg -h on' commands to recreate hiberfil.sys and enabling it again, which worked at first but now it has started having the problem again and this no longer works.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: IdeaPad Y580 / GTX 660m GPU Speed Reverting To 135 MHz (from 405 MHz) In 3D Applications

Mar 10, 2014

I have an ideapad Y580 with the NVIDIA GTX 660m. When I run any application with 3D graphics on battery the GPU core will initially run at 405 MHz - All is well.

After around 1 or 2 minutes, the GPU core will begin to flick between 135 MHz and 405 MHz approximaetly every 2 seconds. At 135 MHz, 3D applications are unusable and any audio goes all 'robot voice'.

I've attached a screen shot from GPU-Z

My understanding is that;
-When plugged in, I should get 835.3 MHz when running 3D applications,
-On battery, there is not enough power available to hold at 835.3 MHz, so the GPU compromises and runs at 405 MHz
-When in Windows, plugged in or not, 135 MHz is sufficient.

However as you can see, my GPU keeps falling back to 135 MHz from 405 Mhz when running 3D applications such as Farcry 3, Left4Dead2 and UGS NX7.5 (CAD Software).

Some Patterns I've Noticed:
The following cycle seems to repeat
GPU Core Speed (MHz)
CPU Core Speed (MHz)
Battery Voltage (V)
405
~798
10.85
405
~1297
10.85
135
~798
10.7

Could it be that the CPU starts ramping up which causes a V drop, thus causing the GPU to roll back to 135 MHz? If so,
Is this normal behaviour of a healthy battery? Can anything be done to limit the power consumption of the CPU to avoid the V dorp?

I see a lot of "You can't run games on battery, just accept it", to which I say, fair enough, but I need this laptop for demonstrating 3D CAD models to people. My 2005 Acer 5670 handled this no problem, I expect my Y580 to perform at least as well (really I expect it to perform a lot better).

System Information:
8GB RAM / i7 3630QM
Windows 7 x64 SP1 - Fully updated
GPU Bios Version: 80.07.3c.00.16
Graphics Driver: 9.18.13.2649  326.49 (Although I have tried 334.89 as well)
Bios: 5DCN90WW (V8.01)
Latest energy management software installed, set to "Lenovo Dynamic Graphics"
System is set to use the 660m always in the NVIDIA control panel

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: IdeaPad Z500 Incredibly Slow Startup Due To Constant Hard Disk Activity

Feb 5, 2014

Purchased from Amazon 2 months ago and worked perfectly without a hitch until a few days ago when I got on the receiving end of  the win8 equivalent of the BSOD with the . From them on I ended up with slow boots random pauses etc. I opted to refresh the PC without affecting any files but toward the end of the reinstall the BSOD appears and now all I had was a black background with only a white cursor.

Left that for over a hour, nothing happened so held down the power button to force shutdown.  Found that Z500 no longer boots into win8 so eventually decided to do a clean reinstall with the onekeyrecovery via NOVO button. This should have been the end of all the problem I was having but unbelievably the problem is still there.

Research what I could about this and found that the slow boot is caused by hard disk constantly being thrashed about by a system file ntoskrnl.exe. I tried updating the wifi driver and it appeared to have done the trick until the next day when I booted up the system again. It appear that the constant hd activity goes away after a few hours of leaving the PC on.

Anyway I have drawn a blank as to what's going on especially as everything was working perfectly until up to that point with no signs of system conflict.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y580 Very Hot To Touch And Black Flashing

Jan 1, 2015

First - temp issues: The bottom of my Y580 has been getting extrememly hot and my temp monitoring program says "GPU temp limit reached".

By hot, I mean if it comes into contact with your skin, it will give a light burn causing a red burn mark. This only occurs when I run something on my 660m like a game or other programs that make use of it. After it gets like this everything begins to freeze up perodicly and FPS drops to un usable levels.

I know the heat is to be expected with performance demanding applications, but this seems abnormally hot. I've opened the case and cleaned the fans and vents.

The fan doesn't seem to kick up very high like it does on Dust Extraction and I can't find anything to control fan speeds. I've also noticed that the AC power brick gets hot enough to melt thin plastic, like a grocery bag.

While the temps aren't a huge concern, the performance impact/FPS drops is. What can I do about this temperatures other than put a "caution contents may be hot" sticker on my laptop?

Second - black flash. Occasionally (once and hour) during a game or program running on my 660m the screen will have an all black flash for 0.5 second.

If I tab out and have a window running over a program running on the 660m the screen will begin to flicker all black for that window only. Like task manager over a 3d game. Drivers and everything are up to date and I've done clean installs.

Lenovo Y580 P/Y/Z Series :: GTX 660M No Longer Detected?

Feb 19, 2014

I've been using my Y580 for a little more than a year now and I absolutely loved it. Recently though, my graphics card has completely dissappeared. This happened after playing an hour or so of Titanfall (which ran really well) and attempting to update my nvidia drivers. I was not able to update the installation using both Geforce Experience and manually. While downloading manually, I noticed that their website was not able to detect my graphics card. I then checked the device manager and all I could see was the Intel card. Later on, the Nvidia control panel was also unable to detect the card.

I decided to uninstall all my drivers and start again with the one on the Lenovo driver page. I was able to successfully download the driver and it made the 660 appear in the device manager. This did not solve my troubles because when I tried to play a game, the 660 dissapeared again. I then looked through the BIOS and I was also unable to find the card. Frustrated, I did a system restore to before I first downloaded the driver. Once again, the 660M briefly appeared again but dissapeared when I tried to game or update it.

1. I get a message saying that the resolution I am trying to create isn't possible

2. I create the custom resolution, however when I try to adjust it in the Screen Resolution menu Windows tells me that it can't broadcast the resolution.

3. The resolution broadcasts, but it is terrible quality, and looks like it is vibrating.

*Note: I had this setup previously, but I had to reinstall Windows recently, downgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 7, and now I can't get it to work.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y580 - Disabling Nvidia Graphics In BIOS

Apr 30, 2013

I have an IdeaPad Y580, and I want to disable the Nvidia chip in the BIOS (I run Linux on it and don't use the chip.) I have the BIOS updated to the latest version from Lenovo's website. I couldn't seem to find anything in the BIOS settings that would allow me to just use the Intel HD 4000 graphics. There was an option to change from "Switchable" graphics to "UMA" graphics, but from my understanding the UMA option means using the CPU to process graphics instead of even the Intel integrated.

Is there any way to turn off the Nvidia chip, or am I stuck with it being on?

The newest ones from lenovo are the only ones that don't quit at random but now the only thing that doesn't like to work still is the two finger tap to right click. Sometimes it'll work for the first ten min when I first turn the laptop on but then it'll quit. Lenovo Y580 P/Y/Z Series :: Cannot Detect AC Adapter After Performing Battery Gauge Reset

Jul 16, 2014

This is not "battery pluged-in not charging" issue. That issue is software related and can be easily changed the option whether Life or Health of battery you concerned by LEM. I'm one of Y580 owner that facing that issue that the laptop cannot detect the AC adaptor anymore after performing the Battery Guage Reset".

For example: URL...I was tring to search for the solution, but as you know there is nothing without send it back to service center. The tempolary solution I was using is,

1. Remove the battery (if laptop is powering on, then shutdown it first).
2. Remove the AC adaptor from wall ac receptacle.
3. Once the laptop is completely powered down, plug AC adaptor to your laptop and wall AC receptacle.
4. After a few second, insert battery back into the Laptop. And then, the battery will be chaged as usaul.
5. You need to repeat step 1-4 above every time you unpluged the AC adaptor.

By the way, I have been living with that issue for almost 2 years, until it was already out of waranty in June 2014. So rightnow, I can do whatever I want without worrying the waranty. I was trying to teardown my Y580 to find the dead components. I gusted that the issue may be from charging circuit. Afetr opened the chassis, I found that the Y580 uses BQ24737 from TI to be the charging controller.

I cannot found the BQ24737's datasheet, but I was using BQ24735 instead, since, they have the same pinout with difference in optional functions. I found it. The dead one is the input MOSFET. It's shorted between Drain and Source!. That lets the voltage from AC adapter directly connected to Battery. And then, the AC adapter will be tripped with over current protection and the voltage is held to near zero. That's why we cannot plug the ac adapter with battery inserted for this case.

So far, after I replaced it with the similar rating MOSFET from old laptop, it works!. So, I can plug to charge my laptop as it should be without problem.the actual circuit shound not be exactly the same with datasheet. For the Y580, the input MOSFET (Q1 in datasheet and PQ302 in Y580) is P-Channel (AO4423), and it has the external circuitry to dive that MOSFET instead of U1. send it to service center to replace the new motherboard. If not, and you have electronic/soldring skill, you can do it by your self.

Tools needed,

1. Soldering iron (it will be easier for removing part from PCB, if you have 2 of them).

2. Equivalent electrical rating MOSFET.

3. Multimeter.

The different model, different location. Anyway, you can check whether it is the right MOSFET that need to be replace by,

1. Disconnect battrey from labtop

2. Using multumeter (ohm function) to measure the resistance between pin Drain and Source of the MOSFETs. The dead one must has very low D to S resistance (near 0Ohm) for both direction (D(+)<-->S(-) and D(-)<-->S(+)).

3. Search for the dead MOSFET's datasheet and then find/cross the new one from local supplier.

4. Just replace with the good one.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y580 Cannot Boot Windows - Preparing Automatic Repair Stuck

Dec 2, 2014

I'm very stuck with my Y580, and I'll start by saying that I purchased the laptop about 1.5 years ago, and it came with Windows 8 installed. I didn't like Windows 8 so much, so I decided that I would get Win7. I also decided that I'd put it on an mSATA to speed things up. After doing so, I just formatted the boot partition on the older drive to use for storage. But I kept the recovery partition on there. Everything seemed to work fine until I was recently informed that I should update the BIOS. I followed all of the instructions from Lenovo in updating to the version 8.00, something like 89WW in the file name. Then recently I noticed my temps were realllly hot when gaming... and I don't play graphically demanding games. I monitored my temps and found out that my CPU (i73630QM) was running over 90°c when playing games like LoL, Dishonored, RIFT, Darksiders, and a few others, all on lower settings.

I did some googling about temps and a lot of people were saying that BIOS is often a culprit for high temps. Maybe you've already put two and two together, but it took me until this point to discover that the BIOS I had updated to is a Win8 BIOS, and I'm using Win7. I figured, this is probably a big part of my issue (and even if it's not going to solve the heat issue, I'd still like to have all my ducks in a row and have all my hardware/software/firmware compatible.

As we all very well know from the few years of tampering with these Y580s, the BIOS can't simply just be rolled back. But I figured there had to be a way. After googling around for some time, I ended up trying a few different things; editing the Config file for the earlier version of the Bios (which just resulted in another error and locked up the keyboard and mouse), I tried booting the BIOS image from a USB, but to no avail (I tried both booting from USB and also a force BIOS update, using the fn+B method, which I realize I may be doing incorrectly, as I am not entirely sure what I should name the ROM file... I can't boot windows to use ANDYSTOOL, so I named a bunch of different ROM files with different names that have worked for other people) ... so on and so forth...

The last thing I've tried was Restoring the BIOS to factory settings (within the BIOS) and now the computer will not boot windows. The Lenovo screen Posts, and Windows starts to load, freezes a moment, Blue Screens for a second, then reboots, saying that there is an issue with either Hardware or software, and gives me he option to either boot windows normally (which just results in the same thing again) or to run an automatic repair. I tried the automatic repair and it just sits on the "Preparing Automatic Repair" screen, and will do so for hours with no progress.

My Y580 should be arriving shortly. I got it on the Black Friday Special and it comes with Windows 8. I bought a SSD to replace the HDD and I am wanting to downgrade it to a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate or Pro and I have a couple questions:

How to do this for the Y580? I have not been able to locate one.

Also I am assuming I would not want to use the Windows 8 device drivers correct? Do I use the Windows 7 device drivers?

Would use the drivers from the Lenovo site or each devices specific website? I am going to try to save them on a DVD in advance and want to be prepared.

Lenovo X Series ThinkPad :: X240 Cannot Be Shutdown

Apr 1, 2014

I turn on my laptap and it start up normally. All are loaded up in the homescreen except the cursor which keeps on loading ( its like when you refresh). All keys are not working except to the CapsLock key, the touchpad and trackpoint ( color red) are working.

I remove the power source and battery to shut it down but it doesn't shut down! Now it is running for 5 minutes, and the screen still ON, continue to refresh. How to shut this down and restart.

Apple :: Random Startup/shutdown - MBP

Jan 26, 2009

Sometimes the laptop when started wont go past the blue screens. Also sometimes it wont turnoff. I suspect it might be because of usb devices, but even still i get the problem. It's really annoying because MBP is supposed to be a flawless device.
