Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Ultrabay HDD Power-off When Idle

Jun 17, 2013

I have three drives: mSSD, HDD, HDD in ultrabay. I think this is taking its toll on my battery. My first HDD is often used since it has my "DownloadsFirefox & uTorrent" folders. However, my second HDD only has music. Is there a way to have it automatically power-off when I don't play music from that drive?

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: How To Handle The Ultrabay

Jul 16, 2008

A key ? for me in purchasing a new machine is how to arrange 2 accessories: DVD player and a 2nd drive (primary drive would be an SSD).

From what I understand, I cannot swap out a HDD and DVD in the ultrabay--if going with a second HDD, the HDD is permanently installed. This implies that you make the pre purchase decision to either have a HDD or DVD player connected by USB and the other in the ultrabay.

Would one opt to have the HDD in the ultrabay due to increased data throughput vs. a USB 3x port?

Lenovo T530. Power settings of Windows 7 and in Lenovo power Manager say that when laptop is plugged to AC adapter - NO SLEEP. But i hear how hdd stops down after some period of time and spinning again when there is a data read or write. That`s quite annoying, especially when primary storage is ssd drive. Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Cannot Eject Ultrabay Hard Disk On T430s

May 15, 2013

Just installed my T430s with Win7 x64.

But I have a problem with ejecting my ultrabay harddisk using "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject media" icon.

I installed the lastest Intel Rapid storage driver (RST) ver. 12.8.10.1005 from Lenovo download.

Ultrabay harddisk not in the list using Lenovo RST driver!

 If I use the native Win7 driver (Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller) it works:

Works fine using native driver.

I assume the Intel RST driver might have some improvement to the native driver.....so I would frefer using that.

This is how it looks like in the Device Manager:
Intel RST driver:

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: ThinkPad T430s Ultrabay Battery Error After Upgrade

Oct 30, 2012

I recently upgraded my ThinkPad T430s to Windows 8 Pro and ever since my ultrabay battery gives me an error when ever I restart or turn the machine on. It goes away after I hit ok and the battery appears to still be functioning but the error is super annoying. I have the latest drivers and software from Lenovo and I have already had the battery replaced via tech support. Its so annoying i'm tempted to see if I can just get the whole unit swapped.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Getting T410 Idle Temperatures?

Sep 1, 2013

My T410 with i5 520M and integrated graphics idles at about 70C when just browsing facebook.  When I power up a program like photoshop or play a low intensity game like starcraft 1, my cpu spikes to about 100C.  I have cleaned the fan many times, but I can't get the temperatures to go down.  I'm out of warranty too .....  What should I do to make my computer actually usable?  Btw these temperatures are measured from when I run TPfancontrol on disengaged at all times.

I checked the load, and the CPU indeed idles at 70C when at 0% - 1% load.  I also get god awful 1.5 hour battery life on a 9 cell battery.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Power Manager Alerts That 65w AC Adapter Is Giving Not Enough Power

Oct 23, 2013

I have just installed an i7 2670Qm on my T420 today.The machine will crash pretty soon after booting up, with the screen having colorful vertical and horizontal lines before it restarts itself and give the memory error beeping pattern (1 beep-pause-3 beeps-3 beeps-pause-1 beep).So then I took out one RAM from the bottom, and the machine appears to work normally again, more or less.

In the OS (Win7 64), The power manager alerts me that the 65w AC adapter is giving not enough power, so the laptop is running on battery. I thought I just need a 90W AC brick so the laptop will work as it should, so I am arranging a 90w one to come in later. But on a second thought, if the battery cannot start the laptop with 8GB of RAM properly.

Is it the CPU or RAM or Mobo or something else? Where should I look?The machine works fine with the previous CPU i3-2310m and 8GB of RAM.The RAM modules I have are 2 x 4GB Samsung 2Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-11-F3.The BIOS version is updated to the latest 1.46.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T430s Not Entering 30 Day Standby With Power Manager

Jun 21, 2010

I have a T430s with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit that is not entering 30 Day Standby like it should. The issue seems to lie with Power Manager.

Inside of Power Manager I have the 30 Day Standby option checked, just like I should, and it is also reflected in the BIOS setup as well. If I change the BIOS transition time for 30 Day Standby to "Immediately" and start Windows, but don't log in, and put the computer to sleep. It almost immediately wakes up and transitions into 30-day standby.

Now I know that Power Manager has a "hard coded" setting of 3 hours, regardless of the BIOS setting. So after 3 hours, Power Manager will automatically wake up the computer like it would to transfer to 30-day standby, but it just goes back to normal sleep.

Today while on battery, it did this twice (according to the Windows Event Log) Wake up, and go back to Sleep / Standby (S3). In the logs, the wake source is listed as "Unknown" when it goes back to sleep 10 or so seconds later is listed as "Application API".

Like I said, I was running on battery, and I also went into device manager and unchecked anything I could think of that would have an option of "Allow this device to wake the computer".  I also disabled the Wake-on-LAN option for the LAN card.  Plus I had all USB devices unplugged, as well as no Ethernet cable in the LAN port anyway.  Plus it does transition to the 30-Day standby if I force the computer to sleep at the login screen before Power Manager is loaded.

I just wanted to add I should have all driver / software updates as of Dec. 1 or so. I'm running Power Manager 6.63.1 and Power Management Driver 1.67.4.4.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T540p - Intermittent Power Supply Connector?

Nov 3, 2010

Symptoms: Laptop switches off unexpectedly; unexpected failure to charge battery; random changes in brightness. Messages appear such as: "This AC adapter may not provide enough power to your Lenovo computer. Please reconnect the proper AC adapter"; "Battery 2: There is an error"; Do you want to switch to 'Airplane in-seat power plan' (if this option is enabled in Power Manager).

This is why I think the power connector is to blame: I opened Power Manager to the Battery tab and also ran BatteryInfoView by Nirsoft. With the power connector firmly plugged in at the back of the laptop and with "90W AC adapter is attached" showing in PM, moving the connector slightly from side to side often triggers one of the symptoms. The two apps then indicate that the AC adapter is no longer present and that charging has stopped. In some cases vibration due to typing or moving the laptop is enough to trigger a symptom.

Supporting evidence: After I taped the power adapter's output cable to the laptop so the plug cannot easily move in its receptacle I found the symptoms stopped (see photo).

Summary:This is a serious annoyance. It means I can't rely on the battery being properly charged when I need it, or that the machine will stay running when I leave it unattended.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Screen Blinks When AC Power Is Connected Or Disconnected

Feb 19, 2010

I have recently bought a T400. At the moment, it is running on Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

After installation of Windows XP, I have installed all the relevant drivers and no yellow question marks appear in the Device Manager panel. However, during the process of installing these drivers, now whenever I plug in our take out the AC Power Plug, the screen goes blank for about a second and then comes back.

This problem was NOT there immediately after installing Windows XP and Service Pack 3, i.e. before installing the drivers. I think that it is one particular driver which may have caused this.

I have already tried re-installing the Graphic Driver.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: ThinkPad T410 Only Boots If Power Supply Is Plugged In

If i have full battery and try to boot without the power supply i get a blue screen after being about 60 seconds in the screen where the windows logo appears. I have Windows 7 installed fresh a few days ago.

I think its possible, that i have made some failure with the drivers. The ThinkPad Power Managers always stops working after booting. So i have removed the program by using the "msconfig" functionality.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T430s - BSOD (driver Power State Failure)

Oct 31, 2013

I'm experiencing regular BSODs on my T430s / Win7 when going into sleep mode (Fn-F4). The error message is driver_power_state_failure. This happens almost every day.

I know this is quite a common issue (I also had it with an older T500, but not on T420). After googling around, I've discovered WinDBG and the way to identify the faulty driver that is causing the problem.

However, I couldn't install the tool - neither the debuggers package (referenced from windbg.org), nor the toolset+.NET framework from the Microsoft website. The former keeps exiting the installer without any messages (although Remove Programs dialogue shows the thing installed, there appears to be no program to run), the latter fails to install without any diagnostics (tried installing debugging tools only, tried installing the complete package - same outcome).

So, need to analyzing the memory dump and identifying the faulty driver? Which file is needed for that - the complete memory dump (from /Windows/ folder, ~500 MB in size) or the minidump file (from /Windows/Minidump/ folder, ~700 KB in size)? Or both?

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T520 - Flashing Lights On Power Up / No Post Bleep

Dec 11, 2014

I've been trying to set-up a second hand T520 bought without the original hard drive. I've installed a Samsung mSATA SSD. I tried to use a set of recovery discs produced on my T510 which seemed to install but got BSOD whenever Win 7 tried to boot.  I then downloaded the Win 7 ISO and booted from the DVD to try and initialise a repair which would not initialise.  I next tried installing Win 7 Pro from the Win7 ISO disc which succeeded but ran into problems with unrecognised network components and drivers.

I've gone through this whole cycle again and got to the set-up screen for Win 7 then got distracted; my thinkpad then appeared to have gone into hibernation before I could finish set-up.  Unfortunately, when I try to power up I get a few flashing lights for a few seconds; no POST bleep and the power dies.  I've tried pulling and reinstalling the RAM and SSD but to no avail.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T530 - No Boot Up / Beep / Fan And Won't Respond To Power Button

Aug 7, 2014

I have a T530 with an SSD, less than a year old, that appears to be bricked ... when the power button is pushed, there is absolutely no noise (no fan, no beeps) and no indicator lights.

I'm having trouble getting the "what happened" story out of the user but I heard something like "the battery ran out and now it won't start". I suspect some improper behavior like hauling the machine around when it was "sleeping" (not off) but that as they say is another story.

Elsenet I saw the following "one weird tip" to discharge static buildup (*)

*  unplug power
*  take out battery
* take out RAM

then a sequence where you pushed the power button 9x and on the 10th time held it for 30 seconds.  Then plug power in and try again.  No soap (although the ram is internal, not in the expansion slot, so I haven't disassembled the keyboard area to check).

I also unplugged the battery/power and held down the power button for one minute - still no luck

Swapped out power supply and battery - no luck

Only indications of "life" are the little battery icon on the top of the case (e.g. when computer is closed):

- Battery not installed - put power cord in, icon flashes green 3x, stops, but power button does not turn on
- Battery installed - put power cord in, icon flashes green 3x,  flashes long orange 1x, flashes short green 1x more

Is there something else I can try or is this a "Call IBM/Get this guy a loaner"?

* laptop appears to be staticy, I have gotten a couple of "snaps" off it, and that doesn't regularly happen

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T530 Does Not Make Typical ThinkPad Power Status Beeps

Feb 6, 2011

I just got my ThinkPad T530.  Things are going ok with it, the keyboard isn't as terrible as I had thought - but certainly didn't wow me like the keyboard on my T510 which I think was the best keyboard any ThinkPad ever had.

Anyway, something I have noticed, and that is sort of a problem for me, is that this computer is not making the typical "power status change" beeps that every other ThinkPad has ever made.  You know, the dee-dum, dum-dee that go along with plugging or unplugging the AC power adapter.  Also no single beep when it finishes going to sleep, or wakes up from sleep.

How I get these back?  I didn't see anything obvious in the BIOS or Power Manager.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T410 Won't Boot / Blank Screen And Keyboard Unresponsive At Power Up

Dec 23, 2014

my Lenovo T410 laptop won't start. I hit the power button and it looks like it's about to boot up. The thinklight blinks on as normal, the cd drive is checked, the caps lock button blinks on, then nothing. No display, and keyboard is unresponsive. Power light remains on; if I leave it a while the fan comes on. I can turn the machine off using the power button, but the problem remains next time I switch it on.

I've tried removing power and battery, pressing power button 10 times then holding power for 30 secs, before replacing power and battery, but nothing happens. I've tried using a different keyboard. I've tried plugging in an external monitor. No change.

This problem appeared after I left it on overnight. I have a hunch that it went into hibernation mode, perhaps, and that it disrupted some important function which it was unable to complete.
