I've updated the BIOS on my t500 Monday. Followed all directions. Now when I power on the t500, it takes 10 minutes before it begins to boot. I see the lights, I hear the fans, but not video for 10 minutes.
View 9 RepliesJust to clarify, my laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad T420i, Type 4178. It is about 2 years old. I have Windows 7 64bit.
My laptop takes about 2-5 minutes to switch on, sometimes it doesn't turn on at all. The screen freezes every 15 seconds or so, but I am still able to move my cursor around. It also lags quite a bit. For example, typing 'how to download google chrome' will take me sometimes an entire minute, because only parts of the sentence will show up on the screen at a time. My keyboard is responding fine. The problem is not with the wireless internet, because even when the wireless is off the laptop is still unbelievably slow. Watching videos is impossible, because the screen freezes so much.
I have been having this problem with my laptop's performance speed for about 2 months now. I had it completed wiped back to factory settings, downloaded every malware and virus scanner known to man (none of them found any problems with it) and updated all my drivers.
I think my attempt to update BIOS with a "BIOS update bootable CD" method has failed!
My laptop: Lenovo Thinkpad T420, i5 @ 2.5GHz, 4 GB RAM.

I intended to update my BIOS to version 1.46 using "BIOS Update Bootable CD" from this link: [URL] .....
Steps:
1) I downloaded this ISO image: [URL] .... and burned it on a DVD-RW(DVD rewritable) medium.
2) I placed the DVD in my T420 and turned it off, then turned it on, select F12 (boot menu), selected DVD to boot from, and the BIOS update utility started.
3) In BIOS update utility I pressed "1" to read the instructions, then press "2" to update BIOS. I clicked "Y" to confirm and the update operation started. First it said " Now updating... ", then afer about 2 minutes, it said "Still updating ..." and it stuck like this.
So, right now, this message stays on my screen for about 1,5 hours(!!!):
"Still updating...
It may take about a few minutes.
<<< CAUTION >>>
Do not turn off the computer during the update.
Do not remove the CD during the update."
Other details (on system setup and current behaviour): AC was continously plugged in before&during BIOS update, battery is OK, no hard disk activity at all, keyboard is(seems) unresponsive, system's temperature is pretty high, but not dangerously high...
I had an admin power on password on a T420 that contained a character that isn't allowed in the newer version (old password had a dash - in it) and I didn't remove the password prior to update so now I can't get into the BIOS as admin - are dashes changed to something else during update or can I revert back to a previous bios version (if so where are they located)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have multiple T430's at my company that are slow to shutdown. It takes approximately 10 minutes to shutdown. It is also consistant, as soon as you login and shut down it will take that long. These are all installed using an image. Running windows 7 64 bit. Looked in event log, but no indication of abnormal errors. Using Kaspersky, Office 2010, Mozy. Checked some registery settings on microsofts website but that didn't fix the issue either. Not sure if this is a lenovo problem, or a windows problem or a conflict with other software.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy T420 takes about 20 seconds from pushing the power on button to the Lenovo POST screen. After that boot takes about 30 seconds to Desktop. What bothers me is this long wait until I see the POST screen. It doesn't seem normal to me.
My System is setup with Windows 7 64bit booting from UEFI on a mSATA Crucial M500 SSD. It has 16GB of Ram and a i7 CPU. I have the newest BIOS (1.46) installed.
Why it takes this long to reach the POST screen?
Ever since i've wiped the machine, i've been having these two problems. When I close the lid, it used to go to sleep straight away, but now I can see the sleep light (and the power button) flash and flash, then it goes to sleep.
When waking up it goes through the lenovo startup screen and resuming windows, then it asks for a password, before I used to open the lid and it would ask me for the password straight away. I know it was going to sleep because I could hear the beep straight away when I closed and opened it, but now it just takes too long.
Also, everytime I boot up into windows or resume into windows from a sleep state, I can hear the device noise, like something is being plugged in/out. But there is nothing being plugged in or out at the time. I can't get to device manager quick enough to see what it is that is causing it. But all drivers seem okay.
Also noticed, when the lid is closed, randomly the laptop turns off (hear the beep) an then turns back off again.
T420 model number: 4180-PR1 with OS: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
The Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD (driver 8.32.43.0) stopped working after I updated to Windows 8.1.
Everything looks ok, no error message when I start Windows and the device manager says "This device is working properly.".
But when I try to play a file on Zune or VLC, I hear no sound. When I try with Music metro app, an error says:
"Can't play. Make sure your computer's sound and video cards are working and have the latest drivers, then try again.

I tried the troubleshooter, but it says it couldn't identify the problem.
Anybody had the same issue?
Just 2 days ago I started recieving the error message 'Fan Error' after booting up my computer (T530). Before it gives me the message there is a loud beep noise. I'm going back to school soon and I'm hoping there is a way to repair this myself without buying a new fan. I'm really bad with operating on computers. I'm wondering if I just have to clean dust out of it or nudge the fan or something like that.

Approx. 8mo ago I installed an Ubuntu form usb stick, and everything went well. But now, I guess after BIOS update (2.54 or 2.56) it doesn't work any longer. Today I saw on support webpage information about BIOS version 2.57. It has even written that it solves my problem: "Fix an issue where the system fail to boot from USB device by configuration.".
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy T540p with Window 7 is experiencing problems starting and shutting down. After booting up I often get a blank screen where just the moused pointer is displayed. I have to hold the power button down to shut down and then try again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 goes to boot-up. Quite often when I shut down Win 7 The desktop icons disappear but the desktop background continues to be displayed and the notebook doesn't shut down.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a wonderful new T440 here and am wishing to load Windows 7 x64 from a bootable usb memory stick, which I've always used and works fine on other computers (tested again this morning).
However when I try to boot my T440 from this drive, I can bring up the temporary boot menu and see the usb drive in the list, but when I select it (press enter) the screen just flashes and comes back to the temporary boot menu. IT will not accept my memory stick!
I tried with another stick with Win7 on , but got the same problem.
Interestingly I also have a X240 here and this behaves exactly the same. So I don't think it is the USB Drive and its not the T440. What can I do.
Just out of interest I was able to boot from a Windows 8 prepared USB drive... which is great but I don't want to load win8, I need to load win7.
When I "restart" my Y500 using windows 8.0, it takes a minimum of 15 minutes. Sometimes, if I have time to wait, it takes more than one hour. 90% of the time, I restart it using the on/off button. No problems at all using the button, but the software takes a VERY long time or won't restart at all--just the green screen with the word "restart."

Does "Bios Update" solve the problem??
For the first week or two it worked fine and everything was going really well. Then about a week or two ago it started acting up. It is freezing programs(firefox, IE, Chrome, explorer, Flash CC, blender, and a few other programs I needed to install for school. It sometimes freezes on startup and I have to hold the power button down to restart it. Sometimes when it restarts it takes 10-15 mins to fully boot up and load up to the login screen.

I rarely use this machine but a couple of months ago I went to boot it up and found that I was not able to get past the Windows splash screen. Sometimes I don't even get the Windows splash screen, I just get a black screen. Rarely I get a Windows screen saying that it is diagnosing a system problem or something to that effect and I can even get to where it will allow me to do some Windows diagnostics but nothing ever comes of it and the process is extremely slow.
I called Lenovo, but of course my machine is out of waranty so the tech just gave me a few pointers and said I could send it in to the depo but the potential repair cost could range up to about 75% of what I paid for the machine in the first place. Anyways, after having me try a few things in the BIOS he suggested that it was likely the hard drive. I mistakenly thought from the time that I bought this machine that the OS was installed on the 24 GB SSD so I ordered a new SSD and swapped it in. This made no difference at all as I have now learned that the mSATA SSD drive is merely for cache to speed up booting.
I am afraid that this means the main HDD is at fault, and quite frankly, if I replace it I am going to do a fresh install of Windows 7. But I do have pictures and docs that I would like to salvage if possible.
I purchased this wonderful machine from a friend of mine after he had me install a copy of Windows 7 (64) onto it. I am not entirely sure when this problem started.
Problem: I can access my BIOS, but my settings are completely greyed out, I cannot select, much less change anything in it. After startup and I press the "BLUE" button, it prompts me for a power up password, so I press the enter key without typing anything in, which is how I believe I set it, and it allows me to "see" the BIOS settings. I am never prompted for a SVP as I do not believe there is one, although when gazing into the mystic BIOS I see the security settings are as follows-

PASSWORD STATUS ENABLED
LOCK VEFI BIOS SETTINGS ENABLED
SET MINIMUM LENGTH DISABLED

The entire section is greyed out, and I do realize that I am indeed missing some settings that ARE in my BIOS, such as HDD Password (NONE) and I believe something else.
I am trying to edit my display and optimus settings, as I am an avid game player, and the NVIDIA card appears to be a much better option, but I however, cannot.
I want to run a Virtual PC in VirtualBox and get the message, that I need to enable VT-x. I have updated to the newest bios (1.31) but i still don't have the option to enable "Intel Virtualization Technology" under the Config --> CPU menu.

When I ran the appliance, it gave me an error something to the effect that virtualization is unavailable on my machine.I went into the BIOS and found the settings for dynamic frequency and hyperthreading for the CPU, but I didn't see any entry for virtualization - where to look or what to do to enable this feature?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a T400 2765-P3U model, and it won't boot up. When you turn it on, you see the Thinkvantage logo and it stays there. Trying to access the BIOS is non-responsive. I connected the hard drive to see if it was a hard drive issue, but it's not. The hard drive is response when connected via USB. I can't get past the Thinkvantage logo, no response when attempting to access the BIOS. It's still under warranty, so I'll probably send it in for repair but thought I'd give it a try fixing it before hand.

The issue is, the windows 8 is installed in my HDD with capacity 500GB and the SSD 16GB are not detected. My question is, it should be installed in my 500GB HDD or the SSD drive? What are the correct steps to do recovery if I 500GB HDD and SSD drive?
I am unable to enter the BIOS (or the boot device and application menu) of my T530. When I press Enter at the 'Press Enter to interrupt normal startup' prompt, nothing happens. It just ignores my input completely. F1 doesn't do anything either.
Otherwise my ThinkPad is working fine, but I would like to change some settings (especially change the boot device, to boot from USB).
I want to upgrade my BIOS, but there is no update available for bios in windows 8.1.. My Bios version is 1.18, I want to update because i read somewhere that if your fan make noise make sure you have updated BIOS :A.. View 2 Replies View RelatedI purchased online a T440s brand new. I opened the box for the first time myself. When I enter BIOS it asks for password and I just hit enter without entering any password. I can enter the BIOS but i can not change any settings.
What can I do? Can a brand new thinkpad come with a BIOS password out the box?
I get conflicting information regarding the type of password. First image says it's power on which can be removed but bios says its supervisor.
I am new to having a thinkpad and I know that my system has a the intigrated graphics and the discrete nvidia nvs 3100m Optimus card. Here is the issue though. I have been trying to run some programs that are more video oriented (gaming). I discovered that my system is only reading the intigrated graphics and doesn't even acknowledge that the nvidia card is there.
I have updated to the latest drivers and checked the Bios to make sure things are there. Sadly they are not. I looked at the bios, followed the directions I found on the forum to set that to card to on only to find that the the only card it recognizes is the intigrated graphics. So the question is, how do I get the bios and the computer in general to recognize the nvidia card on my T410 (2522)?
I recently bought a t440s from a friend, And i wanted to lookup its warranty.The serial under the battery is recognised by the lenovo warranty check, But in the bios the serial shows up as R8000000, Could this become a problem for me in the future? refrain from bumping your thread(s) / post(s) more frequently than 3 days. The reason I would like to know is that I have recently purchased a docking station (model: 4338) and 3 external monitors which I would like to use simultaneously.

After the latest system update from Lenovo System update, my laptop T530 doesn't do a successful cold boot. A warm successive boot (with interruptible boot screen) works fine.
But cold boot always fails and the system powers down in less than 5s. This is seen after the BIOS updated to 2.59.1.12. restore to older version of BIOS(downgrade it)?
