Lenovo ThinkPad L R/SL :: R61i Support USB 3.0 For External Hard Drive?
Jan 2, 2014I have a Lenovo R61i. Can it support USB 3.0 for an external hard drive?
View 3 RepliesI have a Lenovo R61i. Can it support USB 3.0 for an external hard drive?
View 3 RepliesI can't get past BIOS when my W530 is connected to an external hard drive, in my case a WD My Book Essential 3TB (USB 3.0).
Here are some previous threads I've found:
-W520 hangs on boot when a WD SES USB drive is connected
-W520 won't boot with SES device connected to USB
-W530 stuck or won't boot when WD external drive plugged in.
I would be satisfied if I could disable USB Legacy Support in BIOS and move on, but I can't find that option anywhere on my W530.
Here's what I've tried so far:
-Updated BIOS to the latest version (1.11) and updated WD My Book firmware.
-Changed the port (tried both USB 2.0 and 3.0, powered and unpowered) that the drive is connected to.
-Removed everything except my MSATA drive in boot priority. I can't enter BIOS settings when the WD drive is connected so I can't actually exclude it from the boot priority, but I've tried to enable Boot Order Lock.
-Disabled USB options in BIOS (USB UEFI BIOS Support, Always on USB, etc.).Switched between Quick and Diagnostic boot. With Quick it's stuck at the Thinkpad splash screen, with Diagnostic I just get a black screen.
-Tried with both GPT and MBR partitions styles for the external drive.
-Changed between UEFI and Legacy.Tried it with my friend's Thinkpad T520, wouldn't boot either with the drive connected...
Other information:
My Thinkpad is docked to a Thinkpad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 (170W). I haven't bothered to try it undocked, but judging from the other posts it's not likely to fix the issue.
Surprisingly I don't have this issue with my older WD My Book Essential Edition 2.0 1TB (USB 2.0) external hard drive. I don't think it would work to simply remove the drive from boot priority. I've removed my other external hard drive but I can still hear it spinning up during boot (when the Thinkpad splash screen shows up), which suggest that it's still being identified during boot. Is there really no workaround other than "get a different enclosure" or "unplug it when powering on"? Are there any >3TB external hard drives, preferably USB 3.0, that are known to work?
The problems still exist after I do a fresh restore with Lenovo DVDs. Also ran the Lenovo Update & Driver utility.
1. My W530 wont boot or start if I have a External drives plugged in. It stucked at "ThinkPad" screen. I have to unplug the external drive and press/old power button to shut it down. Same thing happened when the laptop is docked.
=> Contacted the technical support today. They told me I have to unplug and plug it back in everytime. I told him that there is a reason I got the dock station so I don't have to unplug and plug my external drive every time.
2. I have no problems booting if thumbs drive plugged in. But it keep "Auto run" everytime I turn on the machine.
I do not have this problem with my W500 and W510.
W530, Intel Core i7-3820, 32G DDR3 RAM, 180G Intel SSD, Windows 7 x64, NVIDIA Quadro K2000M.
I don't have a lot of money to replace the laptop that just completely died a month after the warranty expired. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad SL510, S/n xxxxxxx and the product ID is 28479XU. Purchased 3 years ago. I would like to know if I can take the hard drive out (which I was told by a knowledgeable computer person that it is OK with all the data on it) AND put it in my working Lenovo Thinkpad SL410, S/n xxxxxxx, Product ID 28427PU ?The SL510 is really dead. All efforts were tried to resusictate by same computer person.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently got an ultrabay adapter and wanted to know if I could run two separate OSs, one from each hard disc.
Effectively, I would like to have one version of windows on the internal HDD for general day to day stuff and one as a programming environment and be able to select which to boot from at start up.
I know I could just use a VM, but some of this stuff (Siemens PCS7) can put quite a strain on the system and I'd rather not have that overhead.
I recently bought a Thinkpad T540P laptop. But there is always some noise made by the hard drive. The noise makes me feel uncomfortable. It sounds like it has been used for a long time, but actually only two days.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at the new timeline series notebooks for a while and got really excited when newegg put up this model for $799! Anyways, I plan on getting an external drive and was just wondering if the SU9400 with Intel GMA 4500MHD could support playing a bluray disk on an external drive? From what I'm gathering through the numerous posts about these models, it appears that the SU9400 should playback 1080P off various websites but I couldn't find any info about a bluray player.
If so any suggestions on a compact inexpensive external bluray drive?
I have a HP 15 Notebook PC with no dvd drive recently I was sent the system recovery cds from HP. I dont have an external dvd drive. What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. I was thinking maybe I could copy the disks onto the external harddrive with the Toshiba dvd drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.

I'm looking at getting a 1TB external.
what would you recommend as a good and reliable external hard drive that I could use with Time Machine.
What do you think of this:
Iomega eGo Portable 500 GB External hard drive - 800Mbps(FireWire800)/400Mbps(FireWire)/480Mbps(Hi-Sp.USB)
Also, from friends I know I've heard only complains about external hard drives - problems with reliability etc. Has anything changed in this regard in recently?
Lastly, what is your experience with Time Machine? How much can I trust it?
I have the Beats Special Edition 15-p058n and my USB 3.0 WD My Passport which works fine on 3.0 Windows 7 is connecting and disconnecting continually every 10 seconds or so.
I have checked the internet and found a lot of similar issues so could be a combination of the hardware and Windows 8.1?
I have tried to turn off the power save setting for the usb root hubs in device manager to see if it is the extra power that the usb 3 gives, but this has not worked.
Is it possible to split my external hard disk into two partition? The drive is originally NTFS.. but I'm looking to split it so that the second partition is Mac OS compatible.
My plan is to use Partition Manager in Windows so that I can split the drive without having to lose data. Then plug it back into Mac OSX so that I can format the new partition to a Mac compatible format.
I bought my first laptop--an inspirin 17R. I would think in this day and age---being able to boot from USB would be a gimme!
I have a bootable Toshiba Canvio external drive that I have images for restoration stored on. I know you can boot from a dvd drive with a bootable DVD (which I did create) But---if the drive itself is bootable---why does the BIOS not have that option?
What does one have to do in this day to boot from USB?
i recently bought a vantex nexstar 3 external hard drive with the option of usb and e-sata. The problem i am having is with e-sata. The e-sata is the prefered method of exchanging information dur to its speed rather than usb.
I would like to know from the community in large if there is anyone who has experienced these problems or has connected an external to their m4400 laptop.
The external laptop has a seagate 7200 rpm FFS(free fall sensor) inside.
The problems:
1) When connecting the exHD to the laptop for the first time the HD spins (i can feel it) but then stops. Windows does not pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager. Only when i restart the laptop still with the exHD connect does windows pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager.
I did in both cases check to see if the exHD needs more power and it is sufficient.
2)Another issue is that i have windows reporting to me that an external hard drive has been connect to my system even though i havn't plugged it in .....
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. I just reinstalled XP earlier today and now everything is like new again. Unfortunately, my files and movies from my external hardrive are taking too long to transfer onto my computer.
I did one movie at a time and it's taking like 35 minutes to transfer, when before it only took 3 minutes to transfer. Anyone know why this is happening
Unfortunately the internal keyboard and mouse on my MBP seem to have packed up for good. Fortunately, I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse.
Is there any way I can copy the entire contents of the hard disk onto an external USB hard disk (everything so that I don't lose desktop icons, filing structure e.t.c.) and then restore it when I get a new machine?
Will the mac pick up any wireless networks? I notice there is an apple brand wireless base, and wasn't sure if that was needed for the wireless to work?
Will any backup external hard drive work with the mac? For example, I have a WD Passport drive that I use with my Dell. Will it be compatible with the mac?
HP G56-122US running Win 7. Bought a replacement 320 GB hard drive due being told by a repair shop that the hard drive had crashed and could not be recovered. Turned out to be the CPU, so I bought a hard drive enclosure so that I could use the new replacement hard drive as an external hard drive. Connected it to the computer and got messages that the software had installed and it was ready for use. Now, if I go to "control panel", click on "devices", it shows that it is installed and operating normally. However, if I try to use it by clicking on an item such as music, document, or a video, and click on "send to", it does not show up as one of the choices. Info that came with the enclosure says it is compatible with Win 7.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire 5750Z notebook which has fallen out with it's best friend the 2TB USB 3.0 Seagate expansion drive. The acer does not want to communicate with the external hard drive and will freeze, crash and stop responding. When the hard drive is not connected, the Acer is quite happy infact it works faster than it did before. Here is a list of the things:
1) I have removed the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers software. The acer restarted 3 times (to be expected) and reinstalled the missing drivers.
2) I have managed to gain a limited amount of access to the seagate where I partitioned one sector but it crashed again before I have the chance to do the other, and I have been unable to access the seagate since.
3) When I view disk management, I am never able to see the seagate drive sectors E and F but occasionally after running the seagate drive settings software I will see drive E but I am unable to access it.
3) I have checked the device manager for hardware conflicts both with the seagate connected as well disconnected and there are no hardware conflicts
4) I am tempted but not sure if I should flash the BIOS with this BIOS_Acer_1.21_A_A

Question: How can I back up my Acer Aspire one 532h-2630 to an external hard drive or to another computer? It has Windows 7 starter which does not seem to allow me to do it.
My brother gave me his old external hard drive, it's a Maxtor Shared Storage Drive capacity is 300GB.
I love my Acer but want to back it up and restore it to factory settings. I've been using it for over 2 years so it's full of stuff by now and I'd like to start fresh.
I can extend my W530 Win8.1 display to a Dell monitor via HDMI OR a HP monitor via VGA but not both simultaneously. If I plug in both monitors simultaneously, then the HP goes to sleep and the Dell reproduces the laptop display, with no option to extend.
Is the w530 capable of extending to two monitors? If yes, do I need to get different cables or something?
I've run my Lenovo laptops (on a T510 now) for years using the middle button (the "scroll" button) as a plain old middle mouse button. The ultranav tool has always had an option to make it act like a MMB, with no fancy scroll function, etc.
I just bought a new W540, and found, much to my distress, that such an option doesn't seem to exist on the W540! This is very important to me as I run Cygwin X server and rely on the middle mouse button to to paste in Xterms and other X apps. This is a real showstopper for me!
I noticed a "three finger tap" function that's supposed to act as a MMB. But it doesn't seem to work in Cygwin X. Plus, it's not the best solution.
Is there any way to do this with the new Ultranav drivers?
Does the Helix's Mini Displayport support audio output?
Since this is not mentioned specifically on the Lenovo Specs Sheet, was wondering if any Helix owners have successfully connected the MDP to HDMI with clear audio?
