Lenovo X Series ThinkPad :: X230 Not Wake Up After Sleep Mode / Power Button Blink With No Response
Sep 5, 2012
I just got my x230 yesterday and I'm having some weird issues.
(1) whenever my laptop goes to sleep mode. I can't seem to make it wake up. The power button would just slowly blink and would not respond to anything. I would have to hard reset my laptop for it to turn on. When I turn it back on, it would go the "Start windows normally" screen.
(2) whenever I close the lid, I'm guessing it tries to go to sleep mode, then if I wake it up, the system seem to reboot and would go to the "start windows normally" screen.
Both seems to all relates to sleep mode.

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.
Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.
At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops. Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

sometime in sleep mode my Yoga fall into irresponsive mode without any possibility to do anything. The power button is simply not working - pushing it for more than 30 second not change anything... Yoga red light is slowly blinking, the fn key is lighting, the fan is working, processor is heating and this follows to full drain battery.
Is any possibility to reset or reboot this "thermal brick" Yoga mode? Some computers and tablet have the hard reset button to work with such a situation - have Thinkpad Yoga similar solution (i.e. button combination invoking reset)?

Brand new X230 here, with the Lenovo wifi. It seems like when I first got it that it would reconnect to wifi after waking, but now, after having done all my software installation, system updates, bios update, etc. - at some point it stopped doing this. After waking I've tried turning wifi on and off, disabling and re-enabling the adapter, releasing and renewing the ip (it won't renew). Basically, after coming out of sleep it seems like the adapter just won't "wake up" fully and get a new ip address. All Windows and systems updates have been performed.

I got an X230 a few months ago and the power key has stopped working. It doesn't spring back like the other keys and pressing it has no affect. My laptop is under warenty so I plan on contacting the store I bought it in about a repair but I'm wondering is there any way for me to use the laptop in the meantime? Any way to turn the laptop on without using the power key?

I got a X230 with 4GB 1Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-12-B4 memory installed. I tried to upgrade it with two Kingston KVR1066D3S7/4G 1.5V memory sticks.
Unfortunately after installing new memory sticks (combinations don't matter) my laptop doesn't power on. After pressing the button there's just a flash and BIOS doesn't boot.
Everything is back to normal after restoring the previous RAM configuration.
Is there something wrong with my memory sticks or is it some kind of bior issue or maybe something else?

I've got a X230 with an IPS screen since 1,5 years, and I currently have some issues with it.
Sometimes, the bottom left of the screen blink and black bars appears, along with some square brightness shapes.
I'm pretty bad to description, so here an album of the problem : [URL] ..... (it's more clear if you zoom).

This is a detail of the bottom left :

Again, this appear sometimes only, and a knock in the screen resolve the problem, but it's worrying.

When I put my laptop to sleep or it sits idle for a period of time and goes to sleep on it's own it stops recognizing the laptop monitor. It will still display on other monitors connected through the docking station, but not the laptop. It doesn't matter if I put it to sleep while on the dock or off the dock, it never recognizes the monitor.
I have an Intel HD Grpahics 4600, and an NVIDIA Quadro K1100M video cards. I've checked drivers for both and they both say they are up to date (9/29/14 for Intel, and 09/12/2014 for NVIDIA). I have also updated every possible thing in the Lenovo System Update.
This problem occured after switching from windows 7 to windows 8.1.I have also lost the ability to control the brightness of my laptop monitor through my computer at any point in time. The function keys don't work, and the setting is not shown on my power manager.

My three week old X230 lost the ability to connect to my wifi router. I can pull up the airplane mode toggle with Fn+F5, but there is no response. I have done a factory reset, installed all Lenovo and Windows updates, uninstalled/reinstalled the intel wifi drivers. The lenovo utilities tells me the radio isn't turned on, but I can't figure out how to turn it on other than the usual ways, but they don't work. All is well in the hardware manager. I have reset the bios to default settings. I updated the bios to 2.06 when I first got the machine, and it ran fine. I can connect via a network cable.

My question concerns the non-functioning sleep mode buttons on my Lenovo W540 20BG.
In my current power management settings, the W540 is suppose to enter sleep mode by pressing Fn4 or by pressing the round power button shortly. However, either one of these methods do not work.
My computer does enter sleep mode when usign the Windows start menu (Start->Shut Down -> Sleep).

I have a quad core Lenovo W520 (i7-2820QM) equipped with Intel AMT. I have all RAM slots populated (original 2GB in each that came with the machine). I have updated to the latest BIOS (1.42 at the time of writing) and latest Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1 (7.1.85.1216 at the time of writing). The machine has Crucial 256GB X100 SSD installed in the main compartment and a regular HDD in UltraBay.
The computer acts normally in sleep mode and restart sequence only when Intel AMT states that "ME is in recovery state..." during boot.
When it looks like AMT is happy problems begin. The problem is that when I'm trying to put the computer to sleep it goes all the way until the end per normal procedure and then suddenly decides to power itself off! Obviously Windows doesn't like this and displays recovery suggestions after starting the laptop again. This happens when connected to AC and also when disconnected from it. Also, when computer reboots it turns off all power (i.e. the display along with backlight, indicator LEDs turn off and fans spin down for a sec) inbetween and automatically starts up after that.
I've tested this on Windows 7 and openSUSE 13.1 (which I had lying nearby) and same behavior happens on both OSes. On Windows, all the latest drivers and updates were installed. So I don't think this is driver nor OS dependent - rather firmware/hardware related problem.
What is funny, it doesn't matter whether Intel AMT is activated in BIOS or not. What matters is whether the Management Engine is in some kind of recovery state or not. When it's not, computer starts acting crazy as stated above and behaviour is repeatable. Intel AMT itself seems to work however. Changing the power policy in Intel ME configuration doesn't work for sleep issue.
Some things I've also tried doing:
* Replace CMOS battery (measured its voltage before putting it in, of course) with a new one - no effect
* Tried two different brands of SSDs (OCZ Vertex 3 and Crucial X100) - no effect
* Tried both legacy and UEFI modes - no effect
* Scanned RAM for memory errors - no effect
Could Lenovo try to repeat this issue and possibly do something about this?

We bought around 40 of these X220 I5 before xmas and now more than 20 of them have failed. The company we bought them from tried everything but they ended up switching the mainboard on the first two that failed.
We were told it was a batch issue with the serial number R9-HNXXX and now all of those are changed into T420. But today we had the same problem with serial number R9-HXXXX that was bought two weeks earlier and with different config - I7 and SSD.

Each time I try to turn off the WiFi when connected to the mains, the unit goes into airplane mode.
1] Any work around so the WiFi is turned off IMMEDIATELY and still remain with the W540 connected to the power supply (mains)??
There has to be a way to quickly turn off the WiFi without going into battery mode.
2] Similarly, is there a way to turn off the WiFi during boot up or before the system is fully booted.
I checked the power setting Lenovo software, but I find it very convoluted for such a simple workstation task.
As an answer to the original post: On long d/l's with slow lines, I have not found anyway to turn off the screen deliberately. Closing the lid does turn off the screen, but the screen turns on when the lid is opened. Having the screen on in an hotel room is a nuisance, similarly when leaving the system on while away, and the cleaning people see the unit is turned on. I gave up, and do not travel with the W540, as I have yet to find a workaround. I do manage with my other brand workstation.

My Thinkpad T520, Windows 7 Pro takes over a minute to load any webpage after waking from sleep. The wifi icon shows that the network has connected to the internet after about 10 seconds from wake up. But if I attempt to use a browser to load any webpage, I must wait nearly a minute before the page will load. After that, pages load quickly.
This problem occurs in multiple browsers (FF, IE, Chrome). I am using Intel Centrino Advanced N-6205 wireless adapter. I've updated the wireless driver and BIOS. I've cleaned out my registry using CCleaner, and I've defragmented.
One bit of advice I've read that I've tried from these forums does NOT work: Uncheck from Device Manager under the Power Management tab for my wireless adapater the option to Allow the Computer to Turn Off This Device to Save Power. Unchecking that option (which would seem to keep the driver on) makes the problem worse because the wifi will not reconnect at all.

I am trying to do a clean install on my good, old Thinkpad X230 which came with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. For some reason, I was not able to create a bootable media from the recovery partition. In any case, I wanted to avoid the recovery partition as I want a basic, non-bloated, and minimal install.
Hence, I downloaded a copy of 64-bit Windows 7 Professional from Microsoft/ digital river website. After performing the checksum, I used Microsoft's USB DVD Download Tool to make a bootable USB on Kingston Flash Voyager (USB 2.0; 8 GB; FAT32). BTW, just for the heck of it, I verified that it boots on my spare (and even older) Thinkpad X60 -- though it doesn't proceed when it sees that the X60 has a 32-bit microprocessor.
The relevant BIOS values and settings are as follows:
UEFI BIOS Version G2ET95WW (2.55)
UEFI BIOS Date 2013-July-09
UEFI Secure Boot Off
[URL] ....
I am posting this query after trying a number of solutions : rebooting from a USB flash drive on my Thinkpad X230. For some reason, nothing has worked and pressing F12 only shows the ATA HDD0 hard drive. Among other things, I have tried the following:
- Updated the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver using Lenovo's Thinkvantage Tools. Now it has version 1.0.9.254. Someone suggested to have at least 1.4.0.225 which is apparently available at Intel's website. I always considered downloading the device drivers from Lenovo to be kosher. Shall I download it from Intel's website?
- Disabled USB 3.0 from BIOS which made all USB ports to act as USB 2.0. Neither option works.
- Tried booting from all three USB ports (of which one is USB 2.0 and two are USB 3.0). Zilch.
- Have yet to try "reset BIOS to default" suggestion as it looked a bit of a last resort.

My laptop charger suddenly stopped working. Last night it was still working perfectly normal. I tried using my friend's charger and it charges, so it's not the battery's problem. It's not the problem with 'Plugged in, Not charging' , but actually there is no response when I plug in the charger. Is it the software problem or is it the charger's problem? Is there a way to fix the charger?

I've got a brand new HP ZBook 14 with preinstalled Windows7. The problem is that when the NB goes in sleep then can’t wakeup:
Goes to sleep successful and when wakeup it the screen in black then HDD led is blinking for 2-3 seconds and then the NB is rebooted.
I installed new clean Windows 8 64 using original HP media come with NB and then updated to Windows 8.1 64
All drivers and firmware are updated. Windows is updated too.
I supposed that the problem is in the ATI video card but I’ve tried with different drivers without result.

if its possible to run 2 external monitors on the Lenovo x230.
[MONITOR 1] [laptop screen] [MONITOR 2]
MONITOR 1= connecting via mini display port to HDMI >> to monitor
MONITOR 1= connecting via VGA >> to monitor
I tried the above but I cant get it working on all 3 only - the 1 external 1 laptop screen works. Does X230 grahics card was designed to handle that?

I just purchased these 2 new dual monitors whose input connectors only come in HDMI, DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort. I'm using a X230 with a Ultrabase 3 and I can't seem to get the 2nd monitor up and working... My first one is being used through the displayport direclty on my laptop (left side).
Is it not possible to get both monitors using a combination of these cables? Would buying a converter (HDMI or displayport --> VGA) solve the problem?
