Sony :: Confused About SSD Options And Sizes For Z Series
Mar 23, 2010
Quick question that I can't seem to find the answer to about the SSD configurations in the new Z series.
On the sony site, they have multiple configs for the SSD, for example 256GB SSD is listed as "RAID0" with "256GBx1". This is confusing for obvious reasons.
I'm really annoyed with the trend in laptop LCD panels to shorten the vertical resolution(s) available for a given screen size and wondered if anyone else felt the same way.
ok / ranty mode on - indulge me here
Yeah, i get it... screens are going wider. first it was 4:3 ratio, then 16:10 and now 16:9. and at the same time pixels have been getting bigger.. But do they have to get shorter at the same time??? Last time I checked, most of the things I, and I'm presuming other people, use laptops for - reading web pages, writing, programming, etc benefit more from increased vertical resolution than horizontal resolution. I don't see these forums listing its topics horizontally anytime soon...
I don't really object to the shift to widescreen aspect ratios... rather it's my inability to find a 16-inch (or smaller) laptop with more than 768 pixels vertically. And resolutions available for a given screen size have shrunk. Looking at HP under 17 inches, only the Envy 15 can do better than 1366x768, and that's optional. And what exactly is making the 1366x768 resolution so popular anyway? It's not an HD standard used by any media.
/whew: rant over.
I'm think going to keep my DV5t with it's 1680x1050 LCD for a long time. It's screen is already an antique.. replaced by 1680 x 945.
So, I was bored and going through my XPS M1330 manual. Then I find this: Altitude (maximum): Operating –15.2 to 3048 m (–50 to 10,000 ft) Storage –15.2 to 10,668 m (–50 to 35,000 ft)
Does this mean we can't use the notebook while in-flight above 10,000 Feet? Don't commercial flights fly at about 30,000 feet?
Just spent an Hour on the phone with a dell rep today and its got me pulling my hair out and i'm really confused..
Basically, one of the USB ports, in my XPS-1645 does not work .(the port right next to the microphone jack).
The other two work fineThis was the case right from the time it got delivered to me which was on 12th December.
After troubleshooting, it was clear that the USB port wasn't going to magically start working and the guy gave me the option of getting the part replaced, a full unit replacement or a refund.
The last two options run out on 12th January Now i'm in a dilemma as to whether to ask for a full unit replacement or just the part, as i will have to wait another 15-40 days to get a new laptop for which time ill be stuck without a laptop .....
I've just been handed a new W540 to be rebuilt as Win7 x64 via SCCM.  How do I access the boot options to select PXE?  I've use X220 and X230's before and they have a button to access boot options.  Tried F12 and Fn +F12,but it just boots into Win 8.
I have a X230 (Dislay ports: VGA DP++). It is in a Port Replicator Series 3 with USB 3.0 (part number 433615W) (Dislay ports: VGA)
For display I have: Lenovo Thinkvision 22" (no model number on case - 4 years old) 1680x1050 (Dislay ports: VGA DVI) Benq GL2450 24" (Dislay ports: VGA DVI HDMI)
Numerous cables (DVI<->DVI VGA<->VGA HDMI<->HDMI)
How can I hook both monitors to the X230 for a dual external display (laptop monitor is not used)?
How I can update the BIOS so I can be able to access advanced options such as memory config, enabling turbo boost, overlocking, changing the boot order (HDD, CDROM, USB, etc) Â Currently the BIOS is a very simple and doens't give me advanced options and information.
I attached a screenshot of the config options for Hard Drive for a Vaio Z.
I thought that the x1 or x2 would mean 1 and 2 drives of the given size, for example: 192GB (128GBx1 + 64GB+1) would mean ONE 128GB drive and ONE 64GB drive.
However, I am confused after reading posts here. It seems the 192GB option is actually 3 64GB drives?
Is 256GB really 1 drive or 2 128s or 4 64s? Their page says 1 256 which I don't believe.
I am also interested in the config for 384 and 512.
I love the Sony Z but the 1600 resolution is holding me back from recommending to a client because he can't stand those very high resolutions. We purchased a FW series (16.4" w/ 1920 res) and that was too high. 1600x900 looks even worse on a 13 inch.
My question is, is there any resolution options with the Z to go lower?
The SR "Blue Label" series that Sony made for Best Buy is the perfect machine, except the for the fact that it doesn't have dedicated graphics or good battery life. Is there any way to get a Z with the lower resolution?
I have a training environment using W530 laptops that are enclosed in an area in front of the desks. It is not pratical to get to the computer as it is hidden away and therefore I need to be able to use the dvi cabled external monitor for bios setup, boot order, etc. Â Right now the boot options are hidden from the external monitor until windows loads. Then the external monitor becomes active. Any way to bypass the laptop monitor altogether?
For some reason, when I access the BIOS settings menu, most of the options are greyed out (e.g. I can't switch off the requirement for a password at boot).
I currently have a latitude x1, it served me well, but it's time to upgrade. My options are something within the 13"-15" screen range --no more external disk drives--such a pain in the backside. My main concern with which i need assistance is what
Dell screen would be best visually? My position requires extensive computer use so I need a screen that would be best on the eyes. What i noticed with my current model is that it puts a lot of strain on my eyes. Perhaps it is the brightness, or perhaps it is the actual quality of the screen, in any case I need help selecting an appropriate model for me.
I specifically want to go with dell because I receive a discount through them.
money is not an issue. I primarily use my notebook for MS Office applications, media editing, and web browsing -- occasionally play a game or two or watch a movie.
My current options are Vostro 1320 screen options- 13.3 ultrasharp WXGA LCD w/true life or, -anti glare 13.3 WXGA.
XPS Studio 13 -Edge to edge 13.3 HD WXGA LCD -Edge to edge 13.3 HD WXGA Slim WLED LCD
Latitude E4300 -13.3 Wide screen WXGA WLED panel for latitude ON
I bought a Inspiron 1545 in the outlet section, got it for $420 with a coupon I got off ebay.
I got the laptop and I absolutely love it! But there is a problem, the graphics card driver keeps crashing, this is an annoying problem and I think it might progressively get worse, so I'm worried.
My options so far that I can think of are:
Do a complete OS reinstall (can I use my dell cdkey to reinstall vista?)
Send it in to get fixed, if that's the case, what kind of fixing will they do?
Thanks.!

I'm currently running 190.40 drivers for my GeForce 9500M on my SXPS13. Before updating to 190.40, clicking the little green NVIDIA tray icon that shows what mode you're running in allowed me to choose my mode manually through the use of two radio buttons.
Currently, I can only switch between "Boost Performance" and "Save Power" by switching power profiles in Windows. Is there some way I can get back those radio buttons without having to go back to the older driver?
I know this question has been repeated, but what are the best things that can be done with the XPS Gen 2 (M170) to polish its shine? Can a graphic card with 512MB be installed? Mother board replaced?
One more thing, Anybody succeeded in replacing his/her old system with a new one with Dell?
A few days ago I booted up my laptop but only the lights appeared and the drives span up. The screen remained black and blank. I looked through a lot of information on the sysmptoms but none of the suggestions worked. However when I removed the Nvidia 8600m and booted up the system went all the way through to the Windows music. This makes me think the GPU has died which seems to be a commone occurrence.
My question is has anyone successfully replaced the 8600m with another GPU on the 9920G? I'd rather not put the same model back. The ATI HD3650 seems a good alternative but may not be completely compatible.
The only source of replacement GPUs seems to be eBay hailing from Hong Kong or China.
so I can "unbrick" my 2 year old laptop. I'm running on Windows 7.
I am stuck debating between the 15.4 WLED (1440*900) and the 15.4 non-LED (1920*1200). I am just not sure which I would prefer. If the WLED came in a 1920*1200 option I don't think I would be so concerned.
I really like the size, weight, and potential power savings of the WLED screens but I am used to working on larger monitors (22 and 25 inch) running at higher resolutions.
What does everyone think about these two choices? Will I be happy with the WLED at the smaller resolution or is it better to opt for the traditional screen with the higher resolution?
Just so everyone knows the laptop won't be my primary computer but will get a lot of use while working on graduate work away from home, writing website code, and general use. The only gaming activity it might see is some occasional WoW.
I'm not interested in a large resolution (I guess that 1280x800 is enough in a 15" screen) but it seems that the display with this resolution has a smaller view angle (especially vertical) than the 1400x900 display that maybe is not very good if you spend some time reading documents.
I've recently had one of my D620's fail on me due to overheating GPU, and now that I've given it to a family member, I've been thinking about what I could do to help the issue,
as she watches quite a bit of TV shows on YouTube and GPU temperatures shoot up to 170F or so even with the back of the laptop jacked up. My D630 hovers around 150F just doing office-type work .....
this is my first time posting, and i have a question.
i've heard that later on there will be different color lids for the sxps 13 and 16.
i understand that this is both a studio and an xps, so it makes me wonder if i can have cool designs on the top. i don't know how thats gonna fly with the leather, because black is the only color that i can think of that would go with it.
so heres my question: do you think that dell will release custom, or at least different colors for the sxps? possibly midnight blue, the RED one, white, brown, green. anything. and if you do, when do you think they will release the new options?
