i upgraded my hard drive and installed windows 7 this weekend. Everything is working fine except for my fn keys will not work.
I have looked high and low through the forums to try to find a fix. I have been installing Sony drivers for the past 3 hours, rebooting between each installation, and it still isn't working perfectly.
I've gotten to a point where the Volume keys work, and when I push Fn+F5 to lower the brightness, the little brightness meter pops up and the sound is made. But, the brightness won't go any lower than maximum.
The screen is really bright and it's killing my eyes, and draining my battery crazy fast!
I have here a TX2HP and try Windows 7 Beta1.
All fine with the driver but the problem are the FN Button and Volume Buttons.
I disable the UAC
I try the driver for Vista in the right order ..
I just could not get multimedia keys and volume keys to work (the ones above the F keys, next to the power button)
I have just upgraded my VGN-CS11S/Q to Windows 7 - 64 Bit. I have updated the FEPD driver via windows update, and installed the utilities in following order:
Sony Shared Library
[reboot]
Vaio Event Service
[reboot]
Setting Utility Series
[reboot]
[reboot]
[reboot]
but no luck. Than, I have reformatted the system (actually, I have restored the image file, but is was a clean installation without any utils / drivers anyway) and installed the utilities in another order as follows:
Vaio Event Service
[reboot]
Sony Shared Library
[reboot]
Setting Utilitiy Series
[reboot]
still no luck. FN keys does work, and little OSD screen comes up as well when I use FN + volume up - volume down keys. But multimedia keys and volume keys (which is the one with lights) insisting on not working.
I may be over-reacting here, but I just realized that I can access the Internet from my VAIO FW490 via Bluetooth tethering using my LG Vu.
No special tools or software needed, except the Broadcom Bluetooth Driver from Sony eSupport. It's really quite handy if you plan to take your laptop on the road.
Here is a simple guide.

I just recieved my Sony Vaio FW490 today. After uninstalling the trial version of Office 2007 (student version), windows refuses to boot normally. I tried several system resores without success.
Although it said that the restore worked properly, I kept rebooting to repair windows or vaio restore center or something like that. I finally called Sony tech support, and they walked me through restoring the C drive to its original state option
HP 15-r014TX...... windows 8.1 single language .... some keys on my laptop such as spacebar , enter, up&down arrow and backspace became non functioning all of a sudden..

This is almost a classic problem. I just installed XP SP3 on a Vaio G11. I did everything according to Sony's plan. But the brightness keys don't work.
Is there a chance that Sony's drivers were written for XP SP2, and that SP3 is the cause of my problems?
Reason I'm thinking this is that SP3 recognized some devices that SP2 doesn't recognize
I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate version x64 on my Sony VPC-CW13.
But the function keys are not working properly. The volume one work but no OSD. Contrast, and monitor selection one since like it is not working at all.
any tips?
I install all the driver available on the esupport.sony.com website, but still no luck
after installing windows 8 pro on my Inspiron N5110 laptop, when I press shift 2 key, it typed as " in place of @.

Why these keys are not working? All updates are applied (Lenovo and Windows)...
My g and h keys stopped working after a Windows 8.1 update occurred on my Inspiron 15R-5521. I didn't even want te update--but could not stop it.
I have tried updatin BIOS drivers, input drivers, and altering keyboard functions in control panel.
I just recently picked up an Aspire V 17 Nitro and imediately installed Windows 7 on it. Everything is working pretty well so far but I noticed the function keys are not working. The ones where you hold down the "Fn" key and then do thing like adjust the volume.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently formatted my laptop to windows 7 ultimate and since then can not get my function keys to work. I've reinstalled drivers that I thought might work and nothing.
When I could no longer adjust my brightness is when I noticed that my function keys were not working. Is there any other way to adjust the brightness on my laptop besides the function keys? If so I have not figured it out.
what screens are most people buying here? 1920x1080 or 1600X900 ?
I don't need a blueray player I think!
I won't be playing any movies on it. I played 1/2 movie on my last and hooked to tv for fun but never played another.
It has the option for (fresh start) or (no fresh start) does this matter ?
I don't want the bloatware and I have my own Vista Ultra Full, I'd put in.
I'm buying the 160 gig with my intention on putting in my own 200 gig 7200 HD
I have tried a slew of overclocking programs including rivatuner and ati tool, to try to underclock my gpu for better battery life. They usually give errors about a unsigned driver installing but I boot with signed driver checking disabled. Has anyone been successful over/underclocking the gpu on a fw490?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to boot from USB in my new Soy FW490 but nothing happens.
Can anyone confirm that Sony VAIO laptops can't boot from USB ports?
Does anyone know how to enable this option in BIOS?
what function key should I press?
I just ran PCPitstop on my FW490 (running Vista Home Premium 64 bit), and the Driver recommendations report listed two drivers which they suggest changing:
1) Realtek High Definition Audio current driver is 6.0.1.5759 , to proposed driver 6.0.1.5888.
2) Marvell Yukon 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller current driver is 10.53.2.3 to proposed driver 10.70.6.3.
The recommended drivers do not appear on the Sony eSupport site for my specific model (VGN-FW490CJ).
Should I leave well enough alone, or is Sony not posting the most current drivers for my Vaio.
I've installed Windows 7 x64 (build 7077) successfully on my Sony VAIO VGN-FZ31M. Everything seems to work OK except for the Fn-keys. The volume controls however seem to have somekind of effect, just without the visual volume bar appearing.
I've tried looking at some other threads and downloaded some Sony Notebook Utilities -package from the U.S. VAIO support site but was unable to install it on my laptop since the installer wasn't too happy about my VAIO model (after all, this apparently is an European model).....
I am in the process of deciding which laptop PC to purchase. I had decided on a Dell Studio XPS 16, but then received a suggestion on this site that a vaio FW series could fit my needs.
I dropped in on a Sony Style store and they have the FW378 DH in stock. I also called the online Sony store and they suggested the FW490.
The differences in the two PC's were:
1) the processors: The FW378 came with a P8600 at 2.40GHZ, and the FW490 with the P8800 at 2.66GHZ
What is a good and relatively inexpensive one

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an FW490, and noticed when looking at the device manager that under Portable Devices that there was a problem. There is a warning beside something called "R5C592". When I checked under properties it says Device type: Portable Device, Manufacturer: Ricoh, Location: on UMBus Enumerator.
Under device status it says: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
I checked for solutions and couldn't find anything. My PC seems to be running fine. Is it possible that it could be that I used a USB key that is causing this problem?
I notice a significant difference in volume levels on my FW490. When listening to music via iTunes, or to Sirius online, the levels are adequate. However when I watch a dvd (Bluray or regular), even after turning the speaker volume as high as it will go, the volume is very weak. Is this normal? Headphone volume is fine btw. Is there a setting that boost volume when playing dvd's? Otherwise I will be buying notebook speakers.

View 5 Replies View Relatedhow to get your FN keys working and for this particular laptop at that Sony Vaio S460. There were descriptions of installing drivers in certain orders, as well as going to a third party site for the contrast portion. Unfortunately, that thread was closed.... but i had a very important question:
I've recently switched from XP to Windows 7 completely bypassing Vista. I had to re-install all the drivers from Sony (i believe i have most of the important things working) however when it came to the FN buttons, those few keys took me longer than the whole process of changing windows. TO my surprise, many of the drivers adapted themselves from XP to WIndows 7. Anyways, after trying everything, i think I finally got MOST of the FN buttons working.. However, when it comes to the volume portion, it only allows me to control up to 1 bar.. So when I click FNF4 - the volume will go up but only to the max of 1 bar?
how to get the FN keys to work under Windows 7 Professional. Is it possible to make it work or do we have to wait for Sony to release new drivers.
