View 10 Replieshow to get your FN keys working and for this particular laptop at that Sony Vaio S460. There were descriptions of installing drivers in certain orders, as well as going to a third party site for the contrast portion. Unfortunately, that thread was closed.... but i had a very important question:
I've recently switched from XP to Windows 7 completely bypassing Vista. I had to re-install all the drivers from Sony (i believe i have most of the important things working) however when it came to the FN buttons, those few keys took me longer than the whole process of changing windows. TO my surprise, many of the drivers adapted themselves from XP to WIndows 7. Anyways, after trying everything, i think I finally got MOST of the FN buttons working.. However, when it comes to the volume portion, it only allows me to control up to 1 bar.. So when I click FNF4 - the volume will go up but only to the max of 1 bar?
I have been having a bit of a nightmare with Sony support. Basically, when my laptop first arrived, my F7 key always looked a bit "off" - the backlight under it always seemed brighter, and it was slightly raised on one side, but I ignored it - how often does anyone use F7?
Anyway, I was cleaning the keyboard because it has that stupid type of keyboard that picks up every bit of oil (drives me mad!) and the F7 key just came off. It wasn't even a harsh cleaning
From the beginning, the A key on my Vaio VGN-Z590 keyboard has been typing aa instead of a. It sort of comes and goes - sometimes it's rare, sometimes almost always. I've had the same happen on o key just once or twice but no others. This never happened [just corrected aa here] to me on other keyboards [corrected again] incl Fujitsu and IBM laptops.....
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is almost a classic problem. I just installed XP SP3 on a Vaio G11. I did everything according to Sony's plan. But the brightness keys don't work.
Is there a chance that Sony's drivers were written for XP SP2, and that SP3 is the cause of my problems?
Reason I'm thinking this is that SP3 recognized some devices that SP2 doesn't recognize
Where can I buy a keyboard key from? I need a new numlock key. My friggen bird just ripped it off and broke it.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a Vaio NS230E and my function keys do not work. I looked around and found that I need to download the Sony Notebook Utilities, but the problem is the link on Sony's website doesn't work at all. Does have the file or know where to get the file?

I've installed Windows 7 x64 (build 7077) successfully on my Sony VAIO VGN-FZ31M. Everything seems to work OK except for the Fn-keys. The volume controls however seem to have somekind of effect, just without the visual volume bar appearing.
I've tried looking at some other threads and downloaded some Sony Notebook Utilities -package from the U.S. VAIO support site but was unable to install it on my laptop since the installer wasn't too happy about my VAIO model (after all, this apparently is an European model).....
There are so many post but none for the FW490. Has anyone downgraded and successfully been able to get their FN keys working,
particulary the ones to control the brightness
i upgraded my hard drive and installed windows 7 this weekend. Everything is working fine except for my fn keys will not work.
I have looked high and low through the forums to try to find a fix. I have been installing Sony drivers for the past 3 hours, rebooting between each installation, and it still isn't working perfectly.
I've gotten to a point where the Volume keys work, and when I push Fn+F5 to lower the brightness, the little brightness meter pops up and the sound is made. But, the brightness won't go any lower than maximum.
The screen is really bright and it's killing my eyes, and draining my battery crazy fast!
how to get these working? I know the folks here got it working for the AR but the same install insturctions dont work for FW. I also a post earlier about a guide for installing XP but it did not work.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have here a TX2HP and try Windows 7 Beta1.
All fine with the driver but the problem are the FN Button and Volume Buttons.
I disable the UAC
I try the driver for Vista in the right order ..
I believe I've downloaded all the drivers from Sony's web page. I can't get the function keys such as brightness and volume working. Is there an order to installing them or a file I may have missed? I have a Sony Z series Vaio VGN-Z610Y. I'm running Windows 7 enterprise x64.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just could not get multimedia keys and volume keys to work (the ones above the F keys, next to the power button)
I have just upgraded my VGN-CS11S/Q to Windows 7 - 64 Bit. I have updated the FEPD driver via windows update, and installed the utilities in following order:
Sony Shared Library
[reboot]
Vaio Event Service
[reboot]
Setting Utility Series
[reboot]
[reboot]
[reboot]
but no luck. Than, I have reformatted the system (actually, I have restored the image file, but is was a clean installation without any utils / drivers anyway) and installed the utilities in another order as follows:
Vaio Event Service
[reboot]
Sony Shared Library
[reboot]
Setting Utilitiy Series
[reboot]
still no luck. FN keys does work, and little OSD screen comes up as well when I use FN + volume up - volume down keys. But multimedia keys and volume keys (which is the one with lights) insisting on not working.
I did a clean install of Windows 7 and I was surprised that almost everything is working out of the gate. There are only a few bugs that I've noticed.
1.) The Fn functions in the F-keys don't work. Which driver do I need for that?
2.) Same thing goes for the Mode - - - - - Settings keys above that. Which driver fixes that?
3.) In the device manager I have and unknown "Base System Device" with the Location of "PCI bus 7, device 3, function 2". What is this/How do I fix it?
4.) The touchpad doesn't scroll. I tried installing the driver from the Sony eSupport page, but it failed. (I reinstalled and rebooted and it's working)
And not a bug, but just a straight up question...
5.) Should I install Sony Shared Library? Do I need it for anything? I really don't plan on installing any of the programs that came pre-installed with Vista, unless it's necessary.
I found some info - Windows XP Media Center Edition requires 1.6 Ghz.

I'm kinda savvy when it comes to this stuff, but I have hit a wall. I have a Sony VAIO that I would like to run Windows Vista and Windows XP on.
I shrank the main partition on my hard drive and created a new partition of unformatted space to install XP on.
But when I put in the XP CD in and reboot, it says that there are no hard drives on my system
I am interested in starting a thread about experiences with W7 and Vaio's. Not sure if this should be done by series or not...
Let me just start with this:
I am using a Z36GD (similar to Z69 series in the US...mine is an Asian model).
Centrino 2 Duo P9600 2.66 GHz
GeForce 9300M GS 256MB memory
4 GB DDR3 SDRAM*3
320 GB*4 (Serial ATA, 7200 rpm .....
I'm planning to buy Vaio Z soon.
But I really wonder if this is possible:
Vaio Z originally windows 7 then use the supplied downgrade XP disc to downgrade to windows XP, and then upgrade back to windows 7
my Vaio SR 290 CTO. I have been using Windows 7 Pro on my SR 290 for a month with no issue except I tried to do vedio chat with my friend today. I found that my Mic does not work(my friend can't hear me at all). I pull up Device manager to test my Mic and I think there is only Webcam driver installed. So the build Mic simply not working. I googled the driver and came up dry.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony Vaio FW21L. I was wondering whether this laptop supports the 64bit build of Windows 7 build 7600?
Also, will the Vaio software work as well?
Has anyone tried to install Windows 7 beta on a vaio FZ? I did install win 7 on my Vaio FZ (with the specifications below) before a week and everything seems to work ok with the drivers for Vista, except for the following problem:
I formatted the hard drive, installed the software, obtained a key from microsoft and activated my version. I did install all the drivers as I did several times before on Vista. Sony notebook utility worked and I got functionality of all the keys except Fn+mute (F2), also the volume control at the top right of the keyboard doesn't work. I believe these two problems are related and could be caused by the same driver. AV mode, S key and other controls all work fine. I tried changing drivers/software: "sony utility dll", "sony shared library" and the AV mode software but nothing happened. Anyone could have an idea on which driver that specifically needed update?
Has anyone installed Windows 7 on Vaio P series?
View 3 Replies View Relatedclean installed Win7 Professional 32bit and it works ok.
Except for:
1. "Unknown device" and "Storage Mass Controller" as troubles in the Device Manager (can't really understand which devices these are to install the drivers for them)
2. Sony Power Management doesn't work at all as well as Fn and all VAIO-specific switches and buttons.
3. Some of the drivers were installed by Win7 and it's really difficult to understand which ones I should change for Sony-originals.
When I upgraded to Windows 7 using the upgrade disks I made the mistake of clicking upgrade instead of custom.
I'm wondering if I can somehow reinstall Windows 7 so I can do a clean install. I don't have an install disc of Vista because it was pre-installed. So, is there a way I can do this or am I condemned to stay with the upgrade version?
I intend to install the final Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit version on my Vaio VGN-Z691. Is there a step by step instructions list on how's the best way to accomplish this mission.
I have currently Vista Ultimate 64bit installed on my Vaio.
I tried , the system works fine but I've some issue :
Vaio Smart Network is not working
Vaio specific keys (like volume ...) is not working
my windows experience index is 2.0 (hard drive...) it's 3.2 under vista
if it is a good idea to install windows 7 rc on my new vaio fw. I read some threads about it, but they are outdated and they required a lot of annoying installations and stuff. I don't mind installing a couple of drivers, as long as everything is functional after that. (which i heard it is not)
I no the real release is only days away, but I am not sure when I am going to receive the upgrade, probably not in the next month.
